Hello, this is Chommang In this class, Let me tell you why I decided to create these YouTube membership lectures. I hope you can watch this video with a light heart today A face is actually shaped like an ellipse rather than a circle Once you compare it with pictures, it would be more obvious The face seen from above is longer However, we think faces are round I think it's because a lot of it is covered with hair So when people draw faces, a lot of them forget the size of the head that's covered by hair I think we all know that faces are not rectangular It's much rounder than rectangles When drawing faces, rectangles are used to construct a three-dimensional shape or as guidelines for perspective. That's why we use circles often to draw faces But as I said before, it's not long enough like an ellipse So, sometimes we draw faces like this First you draw a circle then draw two lines: one horizontal and one vertical Draw a line for the chin to draw a face Normally you should draw something on this horizontal line If you choose to draw eyes on this line, you would have to shorten the chin But as you can see, this way does not give you any idea of the head size That's why you can also draw eyebrows on this line it is much better than before But the head is still too small Why is that a problem? Normally, people draw until this step, and they draw hair on top of it But when you're drawing a tied hairstyle You have to make sure you leave the space for the hair and the head I know a lot of you can draw well with this method Once you get used to it, it's much easier to draw But, what happens once we draw a head from the top rather than a face in front of us? Or, what should we do if we draw a 3/4 view from the top? Should we just draw the hair floating above? Or should we make the head bigger? Where should we set the baseline to draw the hair? Also, side profiles are longer than front faces It doesn't make sense to use the circle Does the side view of the face suddenly become longer? Or should we make the chin smaller for the proportion resulting the face to be smaller? Once you start thinking about face drawing from different angles on all sides, you would realize that this method doesn't go that far I also said that drawing eyebrows on the horizontal central line would not guarantee enough space for the head Some of you might ask, "can't you just lower the eyebrows?" That could work when you're drawing the front of the face But again, how much lower the eyebrows should be when drawing the view from the top or bottom? It will be difficult to find the base line Because of these reasons, I love the Andrew Loomis Method Some of you might not know who Andrew Loomis is, but he is very famous when it comes to face drawing He uses spheres to draw faces and he cuts the sides Some of you might wonder why I'm making these membership videos when you can just use his method I understand, I believe his method is the right one But do you think I mastered face drawings when I first learned this method 10 years ago? No, I thought of it as a method and only used it for front views I never used it properly I didn't know how to use it properly But why? There are a few reasons This cross guide lines shown in this method I wasn't sure where this line should be A lot of videos and lectures on the Andrew Loomis Method, start with drawing the guide line without much information If you're used to face drawings and three-dimensional drawings, it would be easier for you to find where the line should be But if you're a beginner, you might position this line a bit higher or a bit lower Would that be a minor difference? No The center line of a sphere, instead of a circle, is the ellipse that passes through the points of the first circle If you don't consider this before drawing, the beginners would draw the guide lines on different places And one more thing, the method tells you to cut the sides of a sphere It would be easy to cut it on front views You can see how others cuts it on the sides and draw the faces but there's something off If the face is ever so slightly facing the side, should you draw like this? In that case, the outline of the face would become significantly wider. A lot of people who explain the Andrew Loomis Method, do not go into details of this part So I created a method for beginners It's a way to learn the Andrew Loomis Method much easier Even after mastering his method, the complex guideline of different angles would make application of the method much harder Just like it did for me for 10 years If I had known how to draw these difficult guidelines, I would've been able to draw it without the guidelines I use guide lines as it is, a guide I don't believe in precise guidelines I believe that I won't be able to precisely draw everything even with the best guideline (golden ratio) I don't think it makes sense to divide the human body into several sections for drawing Drawing a face in 3 equal parts? I still can't do it I can do halves or quarters just a little bit And the most important reason why I made this method is to have a rough guide of eyes, nose, and mouth rather than a precise location No one can draw the guideline on the precise spot You have to draw and fix it along the way to learn the natural proportion of the face through your eyes, not your guidelines I made this method to train that perspective It's a self-journey to learn this natural sense on your own In my opinion, a lot of people who can draw well don't use guide lines I use it for teaching but when I draw alone, I don't use guidelines If you can draw something without guidelines it means you know the natural proportions by heart It means you have the eyes to draw anything according to that stable proportions The guidelines without practicing, as I said multiple times, I can't make you follow them perfectly, and it's not a good way to learn proportions Regardless of everything I said, those who have drawn faces a lot for a long time would have a sense of proportions and you'd be good at it But beginners and those who can only draw faces at certain angles, I hope this class will help you get used to the natural proportions of faces To learn that, you have to get used to faces and the size of the head That will help you get used to the three-dimensional side of it It doesn't mean just to copy it. I want you to feel the three dimensions in your drawing Then you can start practicing drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth I made this method to teach young students It helped them understand face drawing much easier But it was much more helpful to me Now I have a great sense of face drawing and methodology Now I know everything about face drawings Of course, you wouldn't become a professional right away I also know that this is still difficult for others Getting used to a method is another journey than learning I explained everything I know about how to practice and get used to this method I know if you follow these membership courses, it would be a great help I will start the lesson on how to draw faces next Bye!
