many of you watching will resonate with the term High performer you work harder and longer than others you produce results faster you're more thorough than anyone else basically you're best at what you do and that is why you're a high performer but you're not getting promoted you see people who are less experienced and less qualified than you get promoted ahead of you and this makes you feel angry frustrated and you're probably on the verge of quitting in this video we're going to dive deep into this dilemma we're going to look at why High performers don't get promoted and we're going to look at what you can do about it as a high performer to give yourself the best chances of getting promoted there are two main reasons why High performers don't get promoted and the first reason is the company can't afford to lose you you see when you're a high performer you are so good at what you do that you've made yourself in dispensible you're an essential and a very important part of your team and of your boss's life they can't afford to see you go if you were promoted it would leave a hole in the team your boss would have to find somebody else to replace you they would have to spend time searching for a replacement and training them up and they would have to spend money in the recruitment process as well it is so much easier for your boss to not have to worry about any of that and to keep you in your current job and not promote you at all by becoming so good at your job you've essentially made it harder for people to promote you and you've made it harder for yourself to advance in your career this isn't something we think about too often in formal education we are taught to always strive to be the best to outperform our competition and to please our superiors that is how we are assessed and how we succeed at University and that's how we think we need to be in the office as well does this mean that you can't be a good worker no not at all it just means that you have to combine being a good worker with other techniques that I'm going to share with you in this video the second reason why you are not getting promoted as a high performer is because you are stuck as an individual contributor this means that you perform the tasks within your job really well but outside of that you don't Venture much into management territory you restrict yourself to your job and the tasks of your job only as a matter of fact that's probably the reason why you're so good at performing your job in the first place but conversely it is also the reason why you are not getting promoted you see when your boss is making a promotion decision they will look for more than just whether you are good at your job they will be looking for whether you have the skills to succeed outside of your job skills to succeed as more than just an individual contributor and in particular they want to see you display or they want to see whether you have the potential to display management and Leadership capabilities the ability to demonstrate or show that you're capable of being a manager or leader is what will move you out of being an individual contributor and into the realm of management this is what your boss wants to see not only that you are a high performer but also that you are a high potential if you can demonstrate this then you are positioning yourself perfectly for the next promotion so what can you do how can you demonstrate that you are not only a high performer but also a high potential well that's where this video gets practical cuz I'm going to share with you five techniques that if you implement it will help you demonstrate to your boss that you are a high potential and ready for the next promotion number one be strategic when you want to be known as a high high potential you have to be very strategic about how you spend your time at work you need to complete the work that you are assigned but you also need to dedicate time to activities that will help you progress in your career one question that you need to ask yourself right now is are you spending time on activities that will help position you for your next promotion because you have to understand that in order for your boss to see you as somebody who can be promoted they want to be able to see you demonstrating those skills already in your current position if they don't see you demonstrating those skills but they see somebody else demonstrating those skills then it is very likely they will promote the other person instead the other person will be a safer choice for them to promote so think about what duties will this future position entail what responsibilities will you be expected to take on and most importantly what skills competencies and behavior is required to succeed in that new position in most cases promotions will require you to display potential for management and the skills behavior and competencies that are important for managers to display are training and mentoring people so there you need to show that you are supportive that you're encouraging that you're motivating as well managing projects so you need to show that you have organization skills that you can collaborate and encourage collaboration with other people also that you have creativity and you can encourage creativity with others try to get involved with these things now and try to give yourself opportunities for you to display the behavior the competencies and the skills that you need for that next management position part of being strategic and being involved in higher level areas is to break away from current expectations in other words reframe the expectations other people in the organization have of you this could be your co-workers your boss or other people in the organization you see through your previous work record and interactions with others in the office you've built up expectations in the mind of those people they have an idea of who you are what you're capable of and what you have potential for and in many cases when people can't get promoted it's because those expectations are solidified in people's minds and they haven't been challenged or influenced in any way it's your job to challenge and influence those expectations so people can see you as high potential and worthy of a promotion reframing expectations could be saying no to duties that are not going to help you get promoted or saying yes to those duties but negotiating the terms for example asking for additional pay asking the other person to reciprocate the favor asking for a change in job title or asking for an expansion of your role and pay scale reframing expectations could also be requesting to be involved involved in higher level projects or requesting to work with senior leaders so you can learn from them part of reframing expectations requires you to change the people that you associate with when you change the people you associate with you can break free from previous expectations and reposition yourself as somebody with high potential and it also opens you up opportunities to find a sponsor a sponsor is somebody who can advise and guide you in the right direction and also develop you as a manager or a leader they can give you access to high level projects so you can showcase your potential they can introduce you to high level decision makers so you can develop no like and trust with them they can also teach you critical management leadership skills because they know what you're missing Sylvia an huet the author of forget a mentor find a sponsor says that while a mentor might envisage your next career opportunity a sponsor will advocate for your promotion and leave her the door open she also says that would be sponsors in larger organizations are usually two levels above you with line of sight to your role while in smaller firms they're usually the founder or the president or somebody within his his or her Inner Circle so start thinking about who could be your sponsor not only somebody who could advocate for your next promotion but also somebody whom you can help Advance their career or their vision and when it comes to promoting yourself in the office and being seen as high potential you need to assert a strong point of view this means you need to be in touch with your opinions and know how to express them confidently and it also means you need to be okay with having a different opinion some high performers like to work under the radar meaning they like to keep their head down at work and just focus on doing a really good job they don't like to disagree with people and they don't like to share differing opinions they prefer to blend in rather than Stand Out whereas those with high potential know that by having a different opinion and communicating that different opinion they can separate themselves from the competition and look like a leader with conviction they know how to articulate their opinion clearly they know how to incite curiosity so other people will want to know more and they can influence and persuade people with their strong argument when senior managers see aspiring leaders communicating influencing and persuading others it will definitely put them in the first row for any promotion decisions but a warning here your opinion needs to be in support of the teams or the group's Vision if it's too left field people will think it's irrelevant and they won't know how it connects to the teams or the group's goals I've already alluded to asking for what you want when we talked about reframing expectations but it's such an important and often neglected part of advancing in your career that I felt we need to talk about it again in a bit more detail why do people not ask for what they want well is generally for two reasons they don't want to appear needy or greedy or that they don't want to be rejected the fear of being rejected and the fear of hearing somebody saying no to you is so strong it can prevent the most confident professional from ever asking for what they want but when you don't ask for what you want chances are somebody else will and they will get noticed and promoted instead of you asking for what you want does doesn't necessarily have to be about asking for a promotion it can also be about asking for increased visibility asking for a pay rise asking for more resources asking for better benefits asking for a different workload or asking to be introduced to senior leaders or Executives in most workplaces unless you say something your boss will assume that you are happy with your current job and you're happy with your current status they'll expect that if you aren't happy with it you'll say something about it but most people don't and the inability to ask for what you want could be preventing you from getting promoted if you're watching this video thinking a pay rise is something you would like to ask for then this video up here will help you out where I share strategies on how you can ask for a pay rise and if you are a high performer or a high potential or an overachiever and you have been promoted recently tell us in the
