I agree.
The good thing about being able to watch this and spot how problematic the show is is a testament to how far we have come as people. It is a good thing this show is outdated, given that this show wrapped up in 2015.
It was a different time then. Does that mean that some things we notice now weren't wrong then? No, but people had different perspectives on everything then.
This show did a lot for many groups of people in society on a variety of scales. While arguably not the best representation, it was the first time a show included characters that many people related to.
Hating on characters and their actions has become a thing, but I can't think of any character that gets so much hate that they're portrayer, in this case, Mattew Morrison, gets hated on a level I have never seen any other actor deal with. The hate follows him everywhere. Everything he does gets hated on. It's supposed to be funny, but it's not.
What's sadder is that this message will continue to fall on deaf ears. People don't care, and some can't even separate characters from actors.
I’m really glad that she addressed this. Honestly, if I was dumped with the amount of vitriol Matthew Morrison receives every fucking day, I’m not sure how (or if) I’d be able to deal with it. Not liking Mr Schue is fine, but for god’s sake, don’t harass the ACTOR (aka A PERSON LITERALLY DOING THEIR JOB). He’s an incredible singer and dancer with an accomplished career, and from what I’ve seen and heard from the Glee cast and crew members they think the world of him.
I hate how some people can, as she said, protest against the media’s horrible portrayal of Britney and in the same breath spew all sorts of horrible things at Matthew. Like - because you think that’s funny doesn’t make it okay, jfc.
Ugh his Instagram comments are so vile. I saw comments making fun of his KID and calling him ugly. That is so beyond out of line, I don’t know why people think that’s funny.
People love to hide behind the "it's just a joke" defence, not seeming to realise that that's... literally what every bully on the planet says lmao. He's nothing but a kind, talented man who played one of the more questionable characters on a show full of monsters. He's just trying to live his life and have his career, and above all else, he's a human being. It's awful for anyone to have to get so relentlessly hated on for no good reason, and it's bound to hurt. The same thing happened with Victoria Justice and is starting to happen now with Noah Centinneo and it's like... why do people find it fun to waste their time being cruel? It doesn't make sense to me.
