more this is Porter's first time shout-out to Squarespace thank you so much for sponsoring this episode whether you guys are building a website a store or you guys are starting a new business do it with Squarespace Julie you've been here a couple times already welcome back I've been here like a couple times obviously you probably know them also from our show yeah P that just finished up they had some very awesome parts and I'm very glad that they decided to still want to hang out with us afterwards bring food for years how did you guys feel about the reaction the yappi and people reacted to your guys's characters even I like that was my role you know and I just had a lot of fun doing it I mean it's hard for people the audience to know what the show is about right within the first one or two episodes so I like hearing the reactions now you know where it's like they're seeing where the show is going and they're not just judging it from the first episode or two and I think just to put it out there like my character and Porter's character so Lana and Andrew we have a history you know there's a history that we didn't really dive that deep into but maybe we'll get to go you know explore that a little bit more in the second season or something they were really upset that like Lana what more do you want it is great you know like yeah Paulo's like the Andrew engineer ya know they were like what one of my closest friends from college like text me and he's like why are you being so mean to Andrew oh well I'm team Andrew all the way and I was like you haven't even watched the whole thing and he's like I don't care what about the first scene where it was like we saw shirtless though there's been there has been one other case of shirtless villain in a while for video it was in an offline episode Oh Dan aka Dan it just keeps commenting on every episode here for shirtless so that's why I was like sign me up that was in their contract Julie a lot of people like your character he's like pretty sassy you know and I was like oh everyone loves sassy girl outspoken girl and it's funny because she's like Andrews little sister but in a lot of ways she's got this like 45 year old wisdom so I really enjoyed telling my older brother I think the last time we sat down to eat together was actually the last episode of yeah P well onset for that with my mom who was actually my mom method well so Phil had jokingly while we were like in the beginnings of talking about this role and yeah P he's like we're looking for a mom character like who wouldn't be funny if you like ask your mom to be the mom because it's actually really hard to find that age range of parents in America that are like willing to act most Asians that are assuming acting are like they're not like our parents like it's my first time acting I was like mom do you know how long it took for me to be in a while acting the episode was about Andrew needing to like introduce kalenna to his parents and I thought it'd be interesting to talk about today like have you guys had any horror stories or you have so many tips for meeting parents I remember the first time I was taking my current girlfriend to our first date and before we can even do that she was like you have to talk to my dad I was 19 so formal whoa i sat with with him in the living room and then he just asked me some questions about myself wait were you surprised that she wanted you to do that though cuz like well not really because I knew from beginning like she comes from very like a traditional background a very like more more conservative in that regard so it wasn't like a surprise I think I had enough time to kind of prepare for it like are you good with parents I think so I think so yeah going up Asian of being you know first generation born here there's a very clear line between the generations and I think that was very installed and you like grown-ups alike with with American parents are very more like buddy-buddy and you can call your parents your friends but I don't think I would like you know call my my dad my best bud can just like curse with their parents they were gone first-name basis yeah come on Steve there's a detail of this story that we kind of glossed over so your first day was at night okay let's say like white American culture it's like kids are going on dates in elementary I remember in elementary middle school like people were going on dates well what you play dates yeah we held hands so at that age meeting the parents is very normal because you can't do anything anyways that to drive you to the movie theater or the park those are the only two things you could do back right right my girlfriend she's half asian because her parents are both half asian so her dad whoa is also half asian right oh so he grew up in like a military household knowing that going in I think I was just you know prepared with my answers I knew what he was gonna ask you did you say yes sir I don't think so I'm surprised that she wanted you to meet him for the first time because I feel like if she's from a conservative family like I'd want to feel it out to see where this is going before I introduce them to my family I assume you already know where it's going she was confident yeah I'm gonna trap like I'm surprised that she made you meet on the first date but if I was in his position I'd be so glad that she did that you know I what's your experience of first time meeting parents growing up my mom was the dad and the mom because she's a single mom and my mom kept samurai swords all over our house and my boyfriend at the time we were super innocently just watching a movie and then he hears the garage door open my mom's home he literally he looks back at the sword collection he's like I gotta go I gotta go and he runs out so that was my mom's way of intimidating the boys and I would say my boyfriend right now meeting parents was a really interesting thing because we haven't planned on it and we'd only been dating maybe like a month in and same thing I didn't want to tell my mom about him until I was sure that this was going somewhere and that day my grandpa like fell down he's fine now he's okay but I brought him to the emergency room and so when he called me my boyfriend was like hey how's it going whatever I was like oh I'm in the ER with my grandpa he's like I'll be there right away all right ended up showing up to be there for me and then my mom came from work and this major points we all met in the ER but then you meeting his parents his parents flew in just there from out of town for Mother's Day and since I was celebrating Mother's Day with my mom he's like let's do it together so I met his parents the same day my mom not as great to do that stuff yeah it's really cool he's like I'm down let's do this and long story short my mom was really shy and I was like nervous but we all had one glass of wine and my mom would like party so we ended up having a great time I was something like if you're dating someone and their parents are in the same city like it's not as big of a deal but if they like from like another city yeah then that's usually like a bigger like Oh like I think I feel like there's more pressure because like we're making a trip but if it's like well my mom lives you know one city away it's very natural for those overlaps to happen like emergency rooms and stuff yeah all right Porter what what about you so I didn't date till later but my sister started dating in high school and my dad is crazy strict so I got to see that interaction which kind of made me like no no he was really strict and he also knew martial art what is with all you guys military samurai swords mark he was also in the military but he knew a lot of martial arts he had all those like things at home like you know those poles and then the staff the things that's fear there was even like one person that wasn't dating my sister he was like her tutor or something but he like came over one day and my dad opened the door he literally just ran he didn't even say like oh I'm here to see Lily or anything he looked at my dad and he ran away what dad but then later on in life when I started dating it was mostly just my mom because she also came a single no and she's way more Americanized and open so she's really excited to meet people and she's like as long as they treat you well and they love you then I will man I had no kung-fu no weapons the very first time I brought a girl back was yeah like also in college because I'm in the Bay Area so like they had to make a trip up but I have a really weird like experience to is that I actually didn't meet a father until I like actually just like a couple years like all my girlfriends were all from the single moms you like strong women I don't know this to make the gut look we're pretty much raised by single moms yeah look and we get along so well so yeah moms I had a great rapport with like mom what about the first dad so the first I would like like me too like he was super chill yeah were you nervous I was nervous but then at the same time it does come down to confidence and like knowing that you know what you provide their daughter and as long as you don't think that you're actually doing something wrong then you have nothing to defend or feel ashamed about you have good intentions right he was pretty difficult it was just more like keep your conversation going yeah ask them about that oh that's a good trick when you feel like you're getting nervous or you or you don't know what to say I do a quick answer and then I'll be like oh what about you do you like to do like where do you go or blah blah and it's like you sure you're showing interest due to time and they like to talk and they like to engage and they're like oh they're thoughtful they're showing interest oh why do you like my daughter why do you like your daughter so as a guy meeting the parents what would you suggest honesty with anything in my talk it was a lot about like oh where do you see yourself like in your own future at that time I think I was pretty sure of a career pathing I wanted to go and I was very vocal like I know what the risks are I'm like I prepared to tackle those risks so I think that's pretty important to actually miss what do you bring that up because I feel like as a guy when you meet with the dad a lot of the questions are about like what can you provide so when I first met the first dad there was a lot of scrutiny of like my job the thing is she already glazed some groundwork though before I got there so I think that's all serving point to like your partner needs to like talk you up or answer any preliminary questions first but definitely got there was our it was like a lot of questions cuz this is Wong foo put I think you know like it's a video YouTube channel they didn't understand what that is right so there was a lot of questions and make them feel confident that you know what I feel like a lot of the generation though the parents that we're meeting that generation a lot of them didn't pursue the arts you know so it is hard in general to explain your profession to people that don't really understand the industry I think what helps too is like oh what would I ask my daughter's boyfriend oh wow you're super myself I guess this is why she wanted you to meet her dad I'm keeping yeah for moms though I think is a different thing as a guy I think going for like you know meeting moms like you want to just be very sweet you want to like bring gifts you want to be a very attentive help out if they're doing like you know something in the house how about with that and like learning how to steal the bill before that excuse me I'm going to the bathroom and that's my me dick though yeah it kind of sucks but it is impressing them with like material things so do your research about the culture of whoever you're dating all right so now from a female perspective meaning your boyfriend's parents what are the tips there it's always like what can I do to help I think that's the mentality that is best with moms I think the moms are sizing you guys up to see if can you take better care of him than I thought moms love their son I think also just sort of meeting them on a human level being able to just talk to them about like what did you do when you were growing up what's your passion all this stuff it kind of connects you guys as human beings rather than my boyfriend's mom have you guys ever had a bad experience with like that you did try these tips and they were just like cold-shoulder alike like you know go strong I've only had like two boyfriends so it's very little but I've had my friends tell me about it where it's like especially I think what strict Asian dads where they're just so I mean think of how critical Asian parents are to their own kids so it's like sometimes when they're meeting the significant other it's like nobody can ever be good enough for their kid you know I feel like we implied this already but the piece of advice of just like you can ask your significant other oh yeah are interested in so if it's fishing or coin collection or something you find something that you have a lot to talk about yeah you got it you got it insight agent that's been with them for their whole lives you know yeah do your research well hopefully we let you guys down good path if you guys are meeting any parents out there hopefully you have better luck than what Andrews gonna face practice again huge thanks to
