when things are fluorescent they absorb high energy light like UV light that we can't see and then a few Nan seconds later it emits the light but at a lower frequency of light that we can see that's why fluorescent markers like this look so bright especially when you shine a UV light on it but as soon as I turn off the UV light the marker goes dark as well within a few Nan seconds but something amazing happens when you cool the marker down to liquid nitrogen temperatures now watch what happens when I turn off my black [Music] light three 2 1 see that it holds on to the light much longer than Nan seconds we can see it hold on to the light for a few seconds afterwards and then re-emit lower frequency red light this is called cryogenically induced phosphorescence and it can make almost anything glow in the dark after it's been charged with UV light like this rope or an orange peel or even PL but now I wonder if I would glow in the dark if I was frozen in liquid nitrogen
