Patrick Vieira has been fired by Crystal Palace but is it really a surprise this year they haven't won a single game they've only scored five goals they go through entire games without getting a shot on target including teams like Nottingham forests and film and it was so positive last season last Season Palace ended the season with the first ever positive primarily goal difference that's kind of nuts their fewest defeats their fewest ever goals conceded their second highest total of goals and victories and their second highest points total but not everyone was convinced were they met with them that was first given consideration to that possibility in February 2022 after a run of games about a win in the league which was rather masked by a cup run and this season they've gone without any wins in 2023. the other issues at Palace have been concerns which have been there for quite a while around his coaching staff and their ability there was a lot of concern about ocean Roberts who was considered to be sort of The Man Behind a lot of theorists decisions I was concerned about the positions that he put players in with not maybe putting everyone in their most natural positions particularly Wilfred Saha alternate Ward Everett his attacking players weren't really utilized in the best way that they could have done so there was a lot of disquiet over the coaching staff and what they were implementing and what they were suggesting and and it just didn't work out for them in the end so there were doubts and then performances recently have been really really bad to watch Palace fans are not having fun there's a lack of energy intensity a lot of fans have said there's a lack of a clear tactical plan so what is it viewers and trying to do the entire time well when he came in what he inherited was a team that was completely changing loads of players going out on free transfers so they signed a bunch of players that came in players like wacky Anderson Mark Gay uh the Congress coming this season on loan then you've got Michael Lisa uh Richie ezzy all players are trying to get together to form this new sort of team and Viera took over from Roy Hodgson obviously a very defensive coach Roy Hodgson likes to keep them very very deep and tight and they would very rarely um have any more than three players attacking at one time on the counter-attack that's how they played Vieira very different he wants to be more intense press higher up the pitch and win the ball higher up the pitch and an attack in a more Progressive Manner and it's largely worked for Palace last season there's more intensity they were getting forward more it was more fun to be had but they are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle let me take the conga out and put in a mystery man we'll put him in here Conor Gallagher who obviously did not come back this season was gone from this team now he did a lot for Crystal Palace you think of him as being a ball winning midfielder in this part of the pitch his numbers show that he receives the ball plenty in the box so his receptions in the penalty area are really high for a midfielder so he'd be able to help with the High Press brings loads of energy and makes people around him better but it also is another goal scoring threat from these Central positions and without that Palace is just much weaker and the conga or whoever they played in this position Will Hughes has not been able to replicate that so because they're then not as good going forward what's happened with Palace is that they have had to try and be more pragmatic now some people were moaning that Vieira was not pragmatic enough and it was stick sticking to this sort of play with players who couldn't do it like in Anderson you've got a player who can ping these brilliant long passes to help start counter-attack moves or just even to build progression from the back with Mark Gay you've got a player who can dribble out from the back so this center-back pairing makes absolute sense it's really well put together that's what you get but then when you don't have one of these players so you put in James Tompkins he cannot play these sorts of passes he can't do that he plays short and that limits the way you build up which then invites more pressure but Vieira stuck to the way he wants to play and wouldn't adjust it there was no argument that he wasn't being pragmatic enough with his with his Squad and that he should have you know considered going to two defensive midfielders with one attacking midfielder um I actually asked him about that after I lost three nil against Everton in October um and he simply replied no when I asked if you're considered doing that however he then went to a more pragmatic more defensive setup but then that has stopped them from scoring goals so whilst their defense is good they're just not scoring goals so they're not winning games and so what's happened since is that Crystal Palace are better defensively but they're much worse going forward so they don't have as many former players like they don't play easy Alicia and zaha in the same team anymore they're normally getting only two of the wide players out of them and leaving one on the bench and so then they're not as good going forward which makes them even weaker and invite more pressure from teams as they push up and they struggle to get forward and then there's the lack of energy motivation intensity in how they play and so they're just stuck doing this and this is not fun to watch and we can even see it in the pressing numbers so ppda or passes power defensive action is a way we can measure how intensely a team presses under Roy Hudson we can see they do not press very much at all then Vieira came in and changed that he made them more of an attacking pressing unit getting forward higher up the pitch win the ball higher up then when we get to this season this drops off a cliff now that'll be to have to do with the the fixture pile up of absolutely crazy teams like Man City Arsenal Chelsea Brentford Newcastle all these really great teams have had to play and start the season so naturally it drops off just try to arrest it and get back to here but they never really recovered to where they were playing before so they're not winning the balls high up the pitch anymore which means they're much deeper which means that's another Avenue of chance creation gone so the club are never really that satisfied with Vera even when it was going well Crystal Palace the results aren't that much worse than last season judging by the Premier League points total hidden by the FA Cup run but the football is nowhere near as far we know they don't press as much they've gone back to playing this horrible pragmatic style that isn't Fun they don't really have players that are good enough to either attack the way they want to or defend or are the players just not motivated enough either way it's not worked for anyone whatsoever and so naturally when all these things don't work something has to change and that thing that has to have to change is Patrick Vieira who has changed to being unemployed so what's next for Crystal Palace who Palace get in next is is really up in the air at the moment um it's possible that they will bring in a caretaker manager um they're on exactly a lot of options out there um who are out of work and Palace do tend to go for out of work managers rather than pay compensation for managers who are doing well and I guess your question how attractive Palace are to a manager in the championship who's who's flying um or you know to a manager from elsewhere um so it's difficult to say what what the situation is going to be they can't really go back to playing a structured defensive low block style that would be a real sign of regression um but in in terms of bringing someone in it it will or there is a good chance there will be someone out of work so there you go whoever comes in next will the go back to what viewer is doing and try and press high up the pitch with players who maybe aren't quite of the quality to be able to do that or do they fall into the Trap like all other just seem to play very defensive try and play on the counter attack try and make them run a bit more and maybe that'll be enough to keep them in the league we're gonna find out over the next few months it's not
