v this badge represents the high performance trim of cadillac models cars and suvs are were a direct response to the amgs and bmw m cars that set the bar for luxury technology and speed the v series and blackwing variants would become record-breaking cars that were the cutting edge of technology but also available in a manual for the longest these cars were considered four-door corvettes sharing engines transmissions magneto-rheological dampeners and also the sound today on explain we'll take a deep dive into america's answer to the german super saloon you wouldn't have the v series of cars if it wasn't for kip wisenko director of design for cadillac and designer of the 1999 cadillac evo this was one of the first visualizations of the new art and science mantra a large departure from the soft bulbous designs of 90s cadillacs to a more modern cutting-edge design language which even 20 years later looks absolutely stunning the first cadillac to adopt this new design language was the cadillac cts or the katera touring sedan built on the new gm sigma architecture gm's performance division which was a skunk works of enthusiasts and racers with free reign to develop secret projects got a hold of the cts to build a super sedan and in 2004 the cts-v would be the end result it ditched the v6 for an all-aluminum 5.7 liter ls6 v8 pulled straight from the track orient z06 corvette this improved over the ls1 offered in the base c5 corvette with higher flowing 243 cylinder heads with stronger valve springs to handle high rpm the compression bump to 10.5 to 1 over the 10.2 to 1 in the ls1 revised intake manifold design and z06 specific camshaft grind with an output of 400 horsepower and only available with the tremec t56 manual transmission in 2006 the ls6 was dropped for the ls2 4th generation ls variant found in the base c6 corvette the horsepower and torque output was the same but with some key differences the ls2 had a larger four inch bore diameter coming out to six liters in displacement the camshaft was less aggressive in lift and duration the throttle body increased from 76 millimeters up to 90 millimeters at higher compression even though power was identical the torque curve on the ls2 was more suitable for a larger sedan the 060 performance was 4.6 seconds within 163 mile an hour top speed and was perfectly nestled as a performance bargain compared to the e55 amg and bmw m5 which msrp near 80 000. two years after the cts-v would debut the xlr-v and sts-v would become available giving a full model range to the performance cadillacs the xlrv heavily resembled the evoke concept and was the most expensive cadillac offered at the time but over a hundred thousand dollars and would look to rival the mercedes sl the xlrv and stsv would differentiate from the cts-v with its supercharged northstar base v8 called the lc3 unlike the ls6 and ls2 pushrod v8 engines the lc3 was a dual overhead cam design with variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts the aluminum block is semi-closed and designed to better withstand the cylinder pressures of force induction the crankshaft is forged with powdered metal connecting rods and hypereutectic pistons giving a to 1 compression ratio versus the 10.5 to 1 in the naturally aspirated variant since the supercharger provides 12 and a half pounds of boost from the factory for an output of 443 horsepower in the xlrv and 469 horsepower in the sts-v the sts-v filled the larger executive sedan role being the flagship sedan over the cts-v and the xlrv was essentially the luxury c6 corvette but without a manual option like the cts-v [Music] by 2008 the global financial crisis would hit gm and cadillac wasn't spared at all the demise of the sts and xlr coincided with gm's bankruptcy and restructuring a move that enabled the automaker to quit making low volume and unprofitable vehicles cadillac would double down on the highly successful cts and introduce the second generation cts-v built on the sigma 2 architecture the 2009 cts-v would debut in may 2008 as the fastest sedan around the nurburgring and faster than the e60 m5 and e90 m3 only to be dethroned by the porsche panamera turbo a year later [Music] the key to the cts-v gen 2 was the lsa supercharged power plant built in contemporary with the ls9 found in the zr1 the lsa wasn't a detuned ls9 like popular believe but only shared the displacement of 6.2 liters the lsa is a forged crank powder metal rod and hypereutectic piston but very robust to handle the cylinder pressures i have first-hand experience with the lsa internals since we built up my ctsb wagon and it's easy to see these are very robust cast construction the lsa supercharger is a 1.9 liter eaton tvs versus the 2.3 liter unit in the zr1 and both run 9 psi boost pressure and has a very mild camshaft compared to the zr1 as well the output is 556 horsepower which gave it a sub 4 second 0 to 60 on summer tires and a 191 mile per hour top speed the gen 2 cts-v would also boast tech from the prior stsv like magnetic ride control which even ferrari would use for their 458 italia cadillac would push the cts-v to fit many roles by offering multiple configurations from a sedan a coupe a sport wagon all offering the tr 6060 manual or 6l90e transmission and if you want a low mile manual sport wagon expect to pay damn near six figures in 2022 after 2014 the v variant of the cts would go dormant with the new alpha architecture in the 3rd gen cts this new cts was seven inches longer overall giving it a more executive presence than the prior generation and in 2016 the third gen cts-v would release along with a calculated model to challenge the bmw m3 and m4 which we know as the atsv the cts-v would get the heart of the z06 just like the first generation but this time it was a supercharged lt4 displacement maintains 6.2 liters but with the addition of a r1740 tvs 1.7 liter supercharger making nine and a half pounds of boost the engine is only one inch taller than the naturally aspirated lt1 and like both engines are direct injected with the lt4 having a 10 to 1 compression ratio the lt4 has a fully forged rotating assembly and blocks strengthening with gussets around the cylinder head bolts an important difference is the lt4 and the v is wet sumped versus the dry sump oiling in the z06 and a different exhaust system gives the cts v 640 horsepower only 10 horsepower down from the co6 combined with the 8l90 transmission which is improved heavily over the prior generation 6l90e the ctsv was an absolute beast on the other hand the ats v was a controversial departure from the traditional v formula with its lf4 twin turbo v6 first time not having a v8 in a v series vehicle quickly sentiment change once the performance figures released and even rivaled the prior generation cts v's performance the lf4 different from the naturally aspirated lfx v6 by a stronger block construction with provisions for turbo oiling and cooling a forged crankshaft with lightweight titanium alloy connecting rods which last time titanium was used in the rotating assembly was the c606 the compression ratio was reduced to 10.2 to 1 with a new piston design to complement the 18 psi of boost produced by the twin titanium turbine turbochargers the short turbocharger intake piping reduced lag and faster throttle response which is very similar to the s55 engine's air-to-water intercooler system in the m4 this engine produced 464 horsepower when offered in a sedan or coupe with either manual or 8-speed automatic the atsv even though considered the baby v literally is faster than all these prior to 2016 since it's based on a lightweight architecture weighing in at 3 803 pounds versus the 4200 pound tanks of the sigma 2 architecture this formula of corvette drivetrain and cadillac styling and technology was a winning combo but cadillac wanted to take it a step further with having their own exclusive engines cadillac would push the v series even further and create a bespoke engine for the ct6's omega chassis and would be nicknamed the blackwing the 4.2 liter lta engine was a clean sheet design with the goal of power density and abundance of torque to push an executive sedan around the lta is an under square or having a larger stroke than the bore which helps with torque production and featured a closed deck aluminum block and fully forged rotating assembly the compression ratio is lower than the lf4 all the way down to 9.8 to 1 since it runs 20 pounds of boost from twin hot v-mounted turbo chargers this way minimal energy loss happens between combustion and spooling the turbochargers this engine is dual overhead cam in independent variable valve timing which the last time that was used on cadillac's was 2011 and featured direct injection active fuel management in a sense cadillac version of the bmw n63 engine but here produce 550 horsepower and a diesel like 640 pounds the saddest part of this engine was it was only designed to be in the ct6 omega chassis so once gm killed the platform in 2020 so did the engine by that time gm introduced the new alpha 2 architecture which underpinned the new ct4v and ct5v models even though being v-badge models they aren't the flagship model similar to how bmw has m sport models but they still are below the full blown m model same with cadillac the v is the prior generation v sport and the black wing is the prior generation v if that isn't confusing the engines and the new black wings are carryovers from the cts-v and ats-v but with higher outputs and manual and 10-speed automatic transmission options the biggest takeaway here is the option of a manual transmission in 2022 where the c63 e63 the m5s don't offer them although the m3 and m4 have stayed true to the formula still offering that enthusiast transmission [Music] the newest addition to the v series is the escalade v cadillac is seemingly pulling an srt stunt and sticking the lt4 in everything this has the highest output of any cadillac to date at over 680 horsepower originally the new escalade architecture was supposed to get the 4.2 liter lta blackwing engine but the engine cost gm 20 000 per engine to manufacture wouldn't be feasible so the cheaper more powerful let's just be honest more reliable in the long run lt4 was a smart choice since the lt4 has been around since 2015 the aftermarket has developed this engine as far as 1400 horsepower and many different combinations between twin turbos larger capacity supercharged displacements like the tvs 2650 the three liter whipples and cylinder heads and cam choices even though the eevee era of cadillac is upon us the ice era is going out in legendary status and we will look back in 10 years that cadillac really pushed the limits of what an american sedan and suv was capable of you
