you've been wondering what an STS drill is and whether you should buy one help is at hand because it's a Dave video I'm going to be explaining the key differences between an SDS and a standard hammer action drill why should I see a lot of tools in today's video they're all mine and I should stress that I'm not being paid anything to produce this video okay there are two main reasons why you're likely to want to add an SDS drill to your power tool range now the first one is drilling it's very hard brickwork or concrete but why do I need that when I've got a normal hammer action on my cordless or mains power drill I hear you ask well someone said you'd be right because the hammer action on a normal drill or drill driver will enable you to drill into most surfaces but I found myself on a door but the customers house seven or eight years ago I didn't have an SDS drill at that time I was using this Makita hammer action drill and try and drill into a concrete lintel to put some curtains or a blind up I think and I could not penetrate the concrete lintel with the hammer action on this Makita drill I was literally straightening away for hours I got through quite a few drill bits I eventually got a hit hole about probably an inch and a half long just long enough for me to be able to get a decent fixing and it's no slouch this drill it's got some pretty decent specs but drilling the hole with a monster like this or even my cordless SDS drill would have taken under ten seconds so what is it about the SDS that enables you to drill through concrete so much easier than you would with a standard hammer drill well the SDS system has its origins in the 1970s when bosch and Hilty originally developed the system to help construction workers who are having real difficulties drilling into hard brick and concrete so there are two types of SDS as SDS plus an SDS max it's bigger brother just to make matters more complicated there's also spline which was the u.s. equivalent when SDS plus and Max were being developed in Europe I'm going to concentrate on this yes plus today because SDS max is for much heavier duty applications which US DIYs are unlikely to come into contact with the SDS drill bit very different to the standard drill bit that you'll be more used to where as a conventional keyless chuck has three teeth that physically grab the drill bit on an SDS drill the drill simply slots into the Chuck on these guide slots and crucially two spring-loaded ball bearings inside the chuck run up and down these slots and that is what gives the hammer action on the drill its power because you can see here the drill bit is traveling nearly fifteen millimeters in and out of the chuck during each hammer action which itself is powered by a powerful piston inside the drill which is so much more efficient than a conventional drill where the hammer action is created by the chuck and the drill moving together and I'm measuring that just under two millimeters so I bought this concrete lintel yesterday from builders merchants and I was surprised to see that my ride the cordless drill driver got through the lintel it made happen work of it but it did get through it in a time of 1 minute 20 seconds without house remember though this concrete is newly manufactured and concrete hardens over time there's nothing like the concrete I came up against as I told you about earlier on in the video in the future 240 volt hammer drill on the other hand did make easier work of the lintel and got through it in just over 20 seconds remember the whole time you've got this ear piercing scream at the hammer action let's out take the cordless SDS drill and you can see immediately the difference when right through the concrete lintel in just over 11 seconds [Applause] the effect is even more dramatic with the 240 volts Titan STS drill where we're through the concrete lintel in just under 7 seconds so you may be thinking well I don't need one of those a drill driver got through it didn't it well yes it did but I can't totally replicate everyday circumstances in my videos I'd try as hard as I can that concrete mental as I said was newly manufactured and as we know concrete hardens in time there will be substances you try to drill into during your DIY life that you just can't penetrate with a drill driver and that's when you need the SDS so if the powerful hammer action isn't enough for you maybe I can convince you with a second function of this tool chiseling chipping and channeling so there are lots of that suggests drills out there remember I'm not being paid or sponsored or anything by anyone today to advertise these easy just the two that I've got in my collection and not all SDS drills are made equally so you need to think carefully when you're buying I've got to confess when I bought this I didn't realize that this was only a two mode SDS drill and by that I mean it's got the standard rotary mode like a typical drill driver and the rotary hammer action made that we just seen some SDS drills like this tighten here have an additional setting and that is the hammer only setting or road free stop as it's also called what this means is you can take out your drill bit and insert a number of chisels the drill that works in the hammer action without the chisels rotating and I've got to be honest I don't know what I would have done without this tool over the last few years as I've stripped off all the rendering off bedrooms while slowly refurbishing them and I've also found an incredibly effective tool for breaking through brickwork to install new waste services which is so much easier than spending hours with the core drill trying to get through this hard Victorian brick there lots of other uses for the SDS it's worth pointing out that our mag do of channeling chasing chisel bit which is for use with soft brick and medium density block to chase a channel for electrics and you might have seen my recent video on dot and dub insulated plaster board where the fixing of choice is a twist fixed that you can use an SDS adapter to hammer home into the wall so I bought this drop from screw fix a couple years ago from a father-in-law and it's actually pretty impressive what you get for 60 quid yeah these s yes drill attachments and chisel bits one of which the touch-up chisels gone missing and you also get this standard chuck which is meant for large format non hammer drilling it's important point that this is only meant to be used as a non hammer drill and it looks like somebody has used it in the hammer up hammer mode so he's very cheap but I tell you what this is a massive lump it's so heavy I've actually a bit oh just laughing at meal site when they see me using this to fit curtains so obviously this is very cheap at sixty quid and for that price you can buy something new that otherwise you'd be spending a similar amount hiring just for the weekend and although it's a big lump for that price you've got 8 joules of impact energy mechanical safety clutch and a magnesium gearbox I would suggest going forward if you're thinking buy one of these obviously be much better if you would just buy a cordless version but as you can see coming up on the screen now the sort of options you've got in the cordless versions are pretty expensive regi ranging from about some 180 up to sort of four 500 pounds so you can see what the attraction of this was when I bought it will be lugging around a little bit extra weight at sort of 7 kilograms so where does that leave us in conclusion well I would say if you're thinking of buying an STS drill make sure you go for a free function drill because personally I don't think there's any point of buying a to function drill I've been alright because I've had the use of the Titan drill for the chisel part but it'd be pretty annoying if you're gonna buy an STS drill to have one that doesn't do which is a function however all of the removal of render that I've done when I've been insulating our bedrooms has been done with a drill has a whacking eight joules of compact energy compared to this two-and-a-half maximum that you see in the Milwaukee that came up on the screen a few moments ago so if there are any of you out there who have done that sort of job using the chisel function of reading render with a cordless SGS do let me know how you got on with it be great to hear from you so that we can all work out whether the cordless SDS has cut the mustard for jobs like that because it will be great if you whatever brand that you run whether it's Milwaukee Makita Bosch if you've got a few four or five a H batteries kicking about it will be the obvious choice to buy a bear s yet ie one that doesn't have a battery or charger with it as ever links to everything that I've shown you in today's video will be in the description tab below the video a lot of people don't know how to get into that you can access it by clicking on the little arrows if you're viewing it from a phone on the show more button if you're viewing the video on a computer I've always linked to tools that I've described in the videos in the description tab I've started as of a couple of days ago to put a few affiliate links into that description that means that if you click on those links and it takes you to somewhere like Amazon or Ebay and you decide to buy that tool then I will get a small Commission for doing that it doesn't cost you anything but it helps me to continue to be able to offer these free impartial videos and hopefully make a little bit of money so that long term I can do this full-time so if you do see it all you want to buy it would massively support me if you clicked on one of those links so I hope you found today's video useful if you have you'd be great if you could click on the like button below and as I always say if you're new to my channel I would absolutely love to have you subscribe you can do that by clicking on the
