good day guys welcome back to the channel my name is Caitlyn and I'm an American living in beautiful Sydney Australia one of my subscribers over on Discord had mentioned this video why Australia might move a border from ABC News in depth I'm not quite sure how in-depth this is going to be since it's only 4 minute and 50c video but raise your hand if you think it's going to be Western Australia just let me know in the comments down below before we even get into this type the comment which state do you think they're going to be talking about cuz I know Western Australia all the time talks about SL jokes about leaving Australia let me know what you guys think down below I have a pretty strong feeling it's going to be Western Australia I could be totally wrong though so let's see what it is grab a bicki grab a Kaa and let's get right into this [Music] video this is one of Australia's state borders and so's this here's another but there are calls for this one to move Australia's internal borders haven't changed in over a 100 years but now this border between New South Wales in the Australian Capital territory presents a potential problem what what didn't see that one coming like I keep forgetting that the ACT is actually kind of nestled into New South Wales cuz for some reason in my head I keep thinking it's like right along the border obviously don't come at me I'm comparing this to American geography here but Washington DC it's right between the border of two states and I don't know why in my head I keep thinking the act kind of is when know the ACT is just in New South Wales it's own separate territory and separate entity but it is completely surrounded by New South Wales it's partly because Australia is suffering one of the world's worst housing crises and because this really straight borderline doesn't reflect the reality of the landscape around it this is very uncommon and really hasn't been seen other than some minor realignments so this is really the first substantive change uh since Federation so hold on they want to change a border because of housing like don't get me wrong obviously the ACT is pretty big given the fact that it's where most government functions happen what's around the ACT though cuz I don't know the area that well and in my head I'm thinking it's mostly rural cuz the one time Market no no we've been in truck a few times but the few times that Mark and I have gone all the way down to Cambra we've gone through really rural areas a lot of farmland and whatnot out there so why is housing an issue maybe they'll get more into it hold on think of Hong Kong or New York these cities have expanded up because there's not really anywhere else to go but Australia isn't short on Space our cities have expanded further and further out in a phenomenon known as urban sprawl and that includes Australia Capital [Music] CRA yeah but how many people are flocking to CRA compared to a lot of like the other major major cities like I know CRA is kind of central for Parliament and for people with government jobs but has CRA actually grown as much as everywhere else because when you hear about migration you hear about people moving to major major cities you hear about Sydney and Melbourne and Perth and Brisbane even Tasmania a little bit but you don't really hear about CRA expanding that much and it could just be because I haven't heard of it it might totally exist that might be a thing it might be like this across the entire country right now but I haven't heard of Cambra as being one of the places where migrations really struck and the population itself is really expanded in that area CRA is proving to be a really popular place to live so we need to build more housing cber is uh Australia's cool little Capital built in the Australian Capital territory oh he's like that really really cringey Uncle of Thanksgiving who tries to speak like the younger generation slang terms and it just comes out so weird Center of power between Sydney and Melbourne camra's population of about 460,000 residents is forecast to reach almost 800,000 by 2060 with the highest growth projected in the north right at the New South Wales border I wonder why they're getting the figures to double the growth though and also if it's going to grow that much in CRA How much more is it going to grow in the major cities right now it's like it's already expanding and growing and booming and there's no cap like I know they put one in place for immigration for 2025 to have the immigration coming in like even now if it's supposed to grow that much and they're already planning on cutting it in half like we're already facing a shortage of houses and stuff where is everybody going to go and how many people are moving to CRA compared to other places I just want to know why they're picking CRA to basically double in size by 2060 and if CRA is doubling in size by 2060 what it going to be like for the rest of the country one of the city's proposed housing developments would deliver 11 and a half thousand much needed homes gin Ander is probably one of the first large scale Urban developments that will cross a border uh for some time and so having a border run through the middle leads to some interesting quandries so residents living in the same neighborhood could be subject to completely different healthare and education systems even different laws and if Australia ever closed its internal borders as happened during the co pandemic there's a risk neighbors could be cut off from each other entirely perhaps all of this may have been avoided if whoever drew the borders of the a in 1910 hadn't drawn this oddly straight line clearly the yeah that is weird weird cuz Australia like I know obviously you have like the Northern Territory in Western Australia where that splits but it's in the middle of the Outback most people aren't living there you have a couple like communities country towns and whatnot but no major cities near those major crossboard in the western part of the country but it is weird that they just drew a straight line over it especially when there's like rivers and mountainous areas from the looks of it right there why water at the moment uh somewhat arbitrary in the doesn't follow the rest of the I guess the pattern of the ACT border which was very much driven by access to water and water catchments without redrawing the map this part of the development would be cut off from the rest of New South Wales effectively becoming an island between this River this Creek and the Border it would be a a very odd uh set of service provision because again all those New South Wales Services could only access the area by coming through the ACT even the head of the local Council on the New South Wales side agrees that handing over the land is probably the best option the right logically would make the most sense now like on a legal basis I don't know what that would entail giving that land up and I know that there's been a lot of push back with like the traditional custodial owners of lands and whatnot I don't know what that situation looks like particularly in like New South Wales act area but it' be interesting and are there any people living in that area currently who this would affect that's another question great Revenue that would be generated from that area would not be sufficient to be able to cater for maintaining the assets and the services to an act standard the New South Wales government wants to Crunch the numbers before it agrees to any change and the federal government would need to agree too how this actually happens is a little bit um on the flly in the sense of figuring this out it'll be interesting to see if that border moves and it feels like it's a slate move like they're not tweaking the entire thing I don't even think they're getting rid of the entire line that's drawn I think it's just that one little section but it'll be interesting to see where this goes and the fact that borders are changing because of migration that rings so many alarm Bells like why aren't there red flags going off everywhere I'm in this weird little limbo area cuz I feel like I can't really say much when it comes to migration cuz obviously at the time of filming this I don't have permanent residency I've benefited from the immigration over here in Australia I feel like partner visas are also slightly different because people talk about housing a lot when they talk about immigration but when you're coming over on a partner Visa you're living with somebody who's for the most part already here or somebody who's already a citizen obviously there's some great areas with permanent residents and people who apply for second partner visons and whatnot I think there's there's rules that could be tweaked to really tighten up the partner Visa process well not so much the process but the eligibility and criteria that's a whole another uh opinion video but yeah it's almost a little bit scary at the thought that they can just move borders because of a huge influx of migrants when we're already having trouble housing the people who are currently here anyway that's it for this video you guys I hope you liked it if you have any videos you want me to react to feel free to pop on over in Discord and let me know there and if you guys like this video please
