when my journey began as the dog whispered I taught the world there is no such a thing as a bad dog today my message has evolved but it's clear the people and dogs still need help the problem is me he needs rehab like ASAP I just want you to get bit do you know who I am and better dogs one pack at a time [Music] much of the country has opened back up after covet sent us into quarantine but I'm hearing from some families that they still in lockdown not from the virus but because they're badly behaved dogs today I'm on my way to meet one of those who's struggling to adapt I'm Sarah Dean and I'm Sarah Bernie we are the Sarahs and we've been married for two and a half years I am a choreographer a dancer and yogurt instructor and I am a photographer our dogs names are Carlo Banks and Joplin Jett we like to name pets after influential people so Janice Joplin for Joplin and Frida Kahlo for Kalo they're both rescues Kalo is between four and five and Joplin she's a little over two Sarah Dean's dog is definitely Joplin yeah personality wise we're both kind of free spirits we'll go with that the nicest way to say it are you scared he hate the car when we first got Joplin she slept a lot when she would play it would just be like typical puppy play you know like I'm gonna play with this toy and now I'm gonna bite Carlo's foot we got Joplin right before covid so she essentially spent her entire life in quarantine when the world started opening back up we started noticing a substantial issue man everything changed Jocelyn barks at everything she looks mean and her hair stands on in and she's got snaggly teeth already so she looks like a werewolf and I think a lot of people are afraid of her and then that fear that they're giving off maybe makes her even more aggressive hey stop stop hey hey friends we're starting to come over and then we're like something's not right something's not right yeah we didn't nobody came over it was essentially like lockdown you know she grew up with everyone masked so then when someone new came into our home and removed the mask she was like whoa I don't know what's happening you know and then taking her outside things progressed no no and I dread taking them out because people that are passing by think that we're crazy and that we haven't trained our dogs enough we keep saying that we're sorry it really is kind of a strategy avoid avoid avoid usually if there's another dog they will run towards it so that's my greatest fear taking them to the park and then rally around the wrong dog that's my leash one bite and they could just die and that's terrifying yeah I love both of our dogs so much so I guess you could say that they basically run the household yeah 100 okay hey stop you know for two years we sat in this condo and you know now the world is opening back up but we're still continuing to stay here so you're not intentionally not intentionally but at some point you know something's got to give yeah Caesar Begins by assessing how the Sarahs lead their dogs on a short walk because Joplin and kalo's most dangerous Behavior occurs when interacting with the outside world Joplin is the one in front Joplin is super afraid sorry that is a printed bar Joplin Joplin is definitely the instigator sorry it's all right it's all right sorry that's right Joplin and Carlo frantically bark at everything they see it's not an aggressive bark these dogs are confused and Afraid and the Sarahs are clueless how to handle it Hi how are you I'm well how are you Joplin Joplin this one is the one that's triggering the whole thing yes right so it's a ripple effect yes because you think she's the dominant is a very frantic Park yeah so frantic is chocolate I can see how Joplin got her name she got a set of pipes like the original Joplin hey can I have the leash there you go [Music] I've never walked our dogs without having tension so that was an eye-opening thing yeah I was like stunned at how quickly she like just sat down next to him I was like it's magic it's mind-blowing okay Sarah tell me what I did yeah so if you don't control the fear it turns into excitement and those two things together you have a frantic dog okay that's really what you're dealing with you put the concept of energy to work okay right so Joplin can feel my calm confident energy when I grab the leash okay yeah that makes sense what about inside the home you said it feels like you're still in lockdown right yeah we also have an issue with people coming into our condo you know they bark at them and so we don't have people over a lot and so maybe you could help us with that too absolutely let's go ladies all right you got nothing else to do I'm here for the Saturday I knew it great yes I seen how clueless the series are with the dogs on walks now I need to see how they handle the Barking frenzy inside the house especially when people come to the door Carlos seems pretty relaxed so let's focus on Joplin come on when someone comes in she barks incessantly yes and it's terrifying yeah so that's how the dog reacts how do you ladies react I pick her up I mean when people come in I don't want her to bark at them the whole time so I pick her up so that Joplin can smell the person that just came in yeah see it's okay is that right I don't know if that's right I'm pretty sure that's wrong yeah and I let her smell the person so that she stopped sparking yeah that's pretty much the opposite of what you should do they can jumpling up when someone enters sends the wrong message they're giving her affection for misbehaving so we can't really take them outside to walk them because of her barking and lunging and then we really don't have people over that much because of the same problem so essentially we're quarantining ourselves yeah because of her okay so I'm gonna ask somebody to knock on the door so I can show you how I address it okay good okay start the knocking please [Music] come on I got it it's essentially the same frantic barking inside as it is outside crap I need to show that Sarah's what's possible with the right energy you have to tell them they're not allowed to crowd the door this is my door I'm using strong energy to ask them to give me and my door distance so first I need to claim here that's why I'm moving in she has to go back on her own oh my gosh this is wild now I'm claiming this is claiming right so this is better than caring don't let her Retreat to you you're reclaiming the house take control you are the pet parent you can't blame the dogs yeah everything I heard from this eras makes me think they believe this frantic behavior is the fault of the dogs or created by the lockdown but it's their own it's time for them to realize that with calm comfort and energy and Direction the human is capable of creating a calm surrender dog but Alicia so we have more control okay okay let's do it again this time I'm Handler Heather will enter the home to help the zeras fully understand that we can blame the dog it's almost always human error they need to understand this truth or they'll never be the parents their dogs need watch how Heather is calm and confident uh [Music] and you see it it's not a dog is it sitting oh my God you've been a good dog this whole time we have a lot to work on here wow Joplin I just I feel like she's just been a pain in the butt the whole time and she's really not she's not it's she's not it's us I think that's really what it is now you're getting it I don't know why but I'm like teary-eyed about it what's going on um I'm feeling the emotion from feeling like I was not doing the right thing for her so yeah it sucks I feel embarrassed I'm hardly ever calm and confident I don't think I'm always a little insecure so um I try to act like I'm not but I didn't know that this dog was capable of being calm and allowing our house to be quiet I appreciate your tears um that's why for me this show is not a it's not a job it's a mission yeah the good news is how quick they can change there you go now it's kind of see this is when you give affection this is when you give affection wow I am encouraged that the series are recognizing the role they play and their dog's Behavior like many pet parents they allow their dogs to live in a natural lifestyle during the Kobe lockdown and as a result Joplin and Carlo haven't been properly socialized so Joplin has become frantic and Carlo follows her lead and now with the lockdown over the Saras have no idea how to integrate their dogs into society but because they're starting to realize that it's not their dog's fault Sarah and Sarah are no longer clueless now they're just a little insecure with their handling skills this day has been a big breakthrough for the paired parents so they're ready to take responsibility and begin their rehab snats yeah mind blown yes all right that's enough for today next time let's meet in my Ranch [Music] the next day Caesar makes his way to West Hollywood where another pack is held hostage inside their home this one by a territorial German Shepherd hi I'm starcy hi my name is Declan I am a actor and I'm originally from Scotland how did you meet Declan so actually on the set of a TV show yeah I uh saw her through the crowd and you know use the Scottish accent we have a three-year-old German Shepherd rescue named Rocky he is the sweetest best dog ever we love them so much I mean I grew up with dogs but he's my first ever dog that I had on my own so he's definitely very important to me Darcy describes Rocky as a sensitive soap he isn't sensitive Soul like he just is so sweet but he does have some territorial issues Rocky hey hey that's enough no okay back here yeah I mean outside he's a great friendly dog he's wonderful and then as soon as someone comes in the door whether he's met them or not it doesn't matter uh he's just a nightmare we can't let anyone come into our apartment without him freaking out Rocky will refuse to let anyone come inside he will just bark then the growling will start well Rocky hey hey he just does not feel comfortable with anyone else in the apartment family members whatever it's a no-go rocky rocky we got rocky just a few weeks before the pandemic um so we didn't have any guests over for about six months after we got him uh which Looking Back Now is probably not a good idea the whole situation is just uncomfortable for everyone involved and it's embarrassing and calm down Rocky lucky can it makes us look like bad owners I feel like our hem look like a bad dog which he's not hey we love him so much but we need Caesar's help hey [Music] thank you hey nice to meet you pleasure how's it going beautiful how are you nice to meet you nice to meet you nice you can help us what do you want me to help you with ah so our dog Rocky yeah is extremely territorial okay um mainly in the apartment whenever a guest comes over the moment they step in the door aggressive growling has a bit London he's lunged to bite we stopped him but he has the potential to bite it's a nightmare so what I want to do is I want to see your ritual okay right so I want to put cameras in there okay we're going to send people in I'm gonna watch it on my little cameras just do exactly how you do all right sounds good sounds good I always need to witness the behavior firsthand before I can truly assess what the problem is so my team is setting up remote cameras inside the apartment I'll stay in the hallway and watch on the monitor while starsy and Declan go in Rocky come on hi sweetheart sweetheart oh no sweet and happy good boy hey Ruckus energy is good when it's just the three of them but let's see what happened when my producer Neo knocks on the door and enters the home yeah they put in the leash on Rocky but they're not communicating what they want hey hey hey it's just fully decade there is no can't surrender rocky rocky rocky rocky hey Rocky is warning Neil at her low growl yeah back away sit sit hey no and of course now Declan is is rewarding the behavior with an emotional approach it's more like affection now he's holding him it's okay look he's our friends oh no no no sorry come here no Sis hey hey no no Rocky no all right coming out there is a lot of fear and anxiety going on in this apartment the pet parents are afraid of Rocky becoming aggressive which then makes the dog fearful and that triggers the aggressive territorial Behavior so it's like a never-ending spiral I'm gonna take over they're gonna come here and I'm gonna show them what would I do okay everybody out of the apartment dog stays inside drop the leash my brother hey don't let him come out I know we're not used to it all right I know yeah no you're hostage by your dog I know so I was watching you guys do the whole thing yeah so you're trying to help them with giving affection at the time where he's not feeling good so you're nurturing that right right right so many pet parents show love and affection when their dog is in the wrong state of mind it's a classic mistake it's okay look he's our friend he just gave more effective that confuses the dog and teaches him the fearful aggression will be rewarded okay I'm going in Watch How I do it in the monitor come confident I need my racket thank you when meeting a balanced dog my formula is no touch no talk no eye contact into the dog gets used to me with an unbalanced fearful dog like Rocky who looks ready to bite anyone who enters his territory I need to swear off with him directly until he understands that I'm not a threat the tennis racket is my chill in case he lunges foreign into the apartment without us [Music] you have the breed it out if your energy is anxious because he'll pick up on that I am mind blown I'm gonna show them how to handle it when someone else comes in Neo coming in all right [Music] he's sniffing there wow he's not barking it's crazy we've been trying to have rocky relax and be welcoming of guests or any Outsiders for two years and Caesar has just taken control of their apartment in two minutes which is kind of crazy let's bring starsy and Declan back in yo not a peep from Rocky when I enter the apartment that tells me Rocky is not an aggressive dog he's just fearful but stars in Declan don't trust their dog and that creates nervousness whenever someone comes over the wrecks that fear towards the guests in the form of aggressive barking growling and lunging hey he spent parents then tried to fix the situation by giving him affection which tells him it's okay to be in a fearful State and the behavior continues but if Darcy and Declan just show calm confidence Rocky's territorial Behavior would stop so he's definitely fearful right right but if you get nervous that's going to trigger him to go into fight mode right right as he gets close to you guys he goes into a protected mode right and Rocky's head now he's safer close to me than with you guys which is crazy I know right yeah yeah yeah because I'm keeping myself calm confident right right confident is the energy that will keep you safe I just couldn't believe when you came in so calm with you so it's just us it's just us what do we have to do change your energy you're an actor right yeah yeah so act with more calm confidence and make sure that Rocky gives space to the person coming through the door okay social distance in the animal world means respect right that's it so Embrace that energy I get it all right I'm gonna come back here in about a week hopefully you guys can lead the pack with calm confidence and Rocky will be just like his now thank you thank you the next day Sarah Dean and Sarah Bernie make their way to Caesar's Ranch to continue their dog's rehabs I'm a little nervous yeah same they're coming off a breakthrough when they realize their own energy is the cause of Joplin and Kalos uncontrollable barking Caesar must make sure the pet parents don't fall back to their old insecure ways I guess I'm just more nervous because I feel like this is all going to be outside with animals that Joplin's never seen before should we do maybe some breathing exercises to really get in the mindset that's wrong for over two years then Sarah's have basically kept their pack on extended lockdown this visit to my Ranch is a very rare trip out of their house for them as a whole pack so there are skills that both the humans and the dogs have yet to learn the humans are insecure and their own handling skills and the dogs have never learned any social skills she's panicking I'm gonna use my balance pack to begin to socialize the dogs and show the humans they can have the confidence and their own dog's Behavior here's my animals yeah I see okay Do my farm animals and then we have the uh the dog park everybody there is super cool okay okay so what I want is for you to go inside the park do you go first aerodyne because you're handling Joplin right now so this is gonna go way over there because right now she wants to get close to the other dogs yeah okay I can hear two seconds and she's already going off the rails it's important that she and Carlos starts to see what normal dog behavior looks like okay back let's begin [Music] come on when he says you know just go in there and there's 10 other dogs you think in your mind this is going to be bad this is going to be bad this is gonna be bad okay drop the leash it's replaced yeah don't worry okay and you kind of set yourself up for failure then your energy immediately tightens up and then they immediately tighten up and then there you go into fight mode look so that now you see the real deal she's scared yes that's what I'm nervous guys as soon as we pass through the gate I made Sarah drop the leash because I need to prove that Joplin is not an aggressive dog she's just confused and afraid to help Joplin that Sarah's Master's work on their own insecurities she's off leash if she was aggressive she wouldn't be attacking every single dog every single person everybody will be dead yeah it's all a bluff really so what we are doing is like calling the bluff it's like a poker game okay you see what I mean yeah so are you calmer now yeah come on Sarah I want Carl to enter the set and get it too she tends to follow Joplin's lead so now that we call Joplin's Bluff and she's calmed down as long as Sarah B enters with calm confidence Carlos you also stay calm when entering the setting Eddie now you put in the pack together come on all the way home own my Park this one come on grab the leash like I said on my Park no no so you're walking like you're on a like about to get explosive like you know what I mean like getting out of here so you gotta unstuck yourself from your past habits yeah because Carlos is totally fine it's you I thought I had a very like strong demeanor but that is not how I walked in I tiptoed Through the Tulips while I walked through so there was a lack of confidence within me that I was unaware of I wasn't gonna bring this up but this morning I took them out quickly and of course like five million dogs are out there and Joplin proceeds to start her whole thing and it made me feel upset because I still can't control them that's because your energy is probably insecure just like the way you walk in here no confidence equals no control right don't worry I'm gonna help you gain confidence with the dogs go inside with all the farm animals just by myself yeah you're gonna repair what you did this morning okay after hearing about her little setback it seems to me that the Sarah who's more in need of com confidence today is Sarah Bernie Calvin yeah Dalia Lorenzo okay so I am sending her over to my Barnyard Academy to walk Joplin with Lorenzo de llama if Sarah can walk the pair without the dog lunging and barking that should make her more secure and her own handling skills that is if Sarah doesn't get nervous about how big Lorenzo is just don't let Chaplin guide you come on Heather just uh helping with Chaplin come Chaplin down okay it was a little nerve-wracking I'm like I feel like I'm in a dance class plus I'm walking into like war zone I'm walking a llama focus on breathing you're a yoga teacher okay it's about relaxing it's about calm confidence I feel really incredible actually there you go I mean I walked with a llama today how cool is that it's the craziest this is crazy this is a memory that I'm Gonna Keep in my mind for when I start to feel stressed out with just two dogs I just remember that I had a llama next to me at some point you know Lorenzo you might want to move forward Bud thank you look at you telling Lorenzo what to do yeah I feel like I ended up feeling very confident all that good memory just please hold it as much as you can yeah for their homework I wonder us to really take advantage of the positive momentum from today and continue practicing calm confidence at home they're becoming more secure and confident in Joplin and in their own handling skills so if the Sarah stay confident and Lead their pack then Joplin would no longer be confused and fearful around new people or animals we're good you're getting there yeah thank you so much thank you see you next time bye ladies a week later Caesar returns to West Hollywood to follow up with territorial German Shepherd Rocky much like Joplin Rocky's loud barking and aggressive behavior hold hostage the lives of his pet parents Declan and starsy Rocky hey hey that's enough on his first visit Caesar discovered the dog's hostility actually stems from his anxious Pack Leaders Declan and starsy are so gripped with fear their dog might bite that they're almost willing it to happen by giving Rocky affection at the worst possible time how are you really good how are you I'm good how are you very good so huge Improvement yeah much more calm he's not perfect [Music] he's laying down but it is taking a while yeah that's been the hardest part right I've been working on being more assertive and then I feel like you've been working on being more patient calm exactly all right I want to see it let's go I'm excited about Rocky it sounds like Rocky is no longer in fight mode when people come over which will be a big Improvement in the span of one week let me what'd you ask it good avoidance good curious hey there you go but I need to see this progress firsthand sit there he goes all right let's get Neil inside I'm ready to be put to the test but I'm just worried that rock is just gonna not do anything that we've taught him Rocky Rocky snap him out of them relax okay that's a good choice he's practicing self-control Rocky became a little agitated at first when he sends declan's nerves but his pet dad got him under control quickly stars in Declan have definitely been working with him but this is a dog who they fear could bite if a visitor comes close Rocky is on the bed but he's not totally relaxed it's essential we help him find calm surrender as a strangers enter his space come in hey hey how are you good man good yes yeah there we go that's right he's not doing the eye contact yeah he's actually okay you can have the space okay he's gonna move the head like that once he moves the head to the other side you just walk away so here's the waiting game there you go boom you see it that is avoidance yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I don't care about him anymore like then I respect them okay okay now I'm ignoring and then you turn that into Camp surrender Rocky did a little bit of growling with Neil good but he's showing Respect by staying on his bed more importantly we're dialing down the aggression eventually his avoidance will become calm surrender so we must continue practicing with humans he's never met Michelle very good come in hi nice to meet you hurry cycling that's good that's good look it's brand new look at that brand new nice all the way all the way stay right there yes right there we're gonna wait here oh there we go there I come this way Michelle there you go there you go there we go you see it yeah yeah yeah took a teeny bit a little bit longer Darcy I want you to try to keep him on the bed this time Declan you get up and greet the guests let's go Lauren hey nice to meet you hey nice to meet you so that's good Hi how are you so we're gonna do the same thing we're gonna come right there close to the leash no touch no talk no I can't touch so there boom yeah yeah look comes around we had zero growls in front of people who are strangers to Rocky he's really come a long way boom right there yeah that's just respectful and so have stars in Declan their calm confident energy is making this all possible but let's see how they all handle multiple guests entering at the same time come in hey how are you [Applause] ready work together there you go look he's checking on him he's doing the same scanning that's it boom right there now you guys move away yep that's a good boy this is such a massive Improvement yeah it's kind of crazy having this many people in the apartment and Rocky's not being aggressive not barking not growing it's wild turkey good boy we have our apartment back now you know it honestly feels like a way has definitely been lifted off her shoulders give him affection now you can definitely be proud of them yeah I can't believe he's even acting this way well I I can yeah I know okay for sure we're doing it right that's why that's why it's happening you know look at all these people inside the apartment I know many of them you don't even know yeah a week ago Darcy and Declan had zero control over Rocky with company inside their home now they're taking leadership of the house back from an insecure dog so he no longer feels the need to become overprotected thank you thank you thank you brother yep yep and keep it up Rocky listen to them okay let's go everybody the next day Caesar pays another visit to pet parents Sarah Dean and Sarah Bernie after a week of homework Caesar wants to see how the saris have built upon their success at his Ranch and whether their once uncontrollable dogs still control their lives hey hey Joplin back hello how are you come on in to this quiet house it's very quiet to this quiet house yes hey man not a pip from Joplin which is totally unexpected is like a church so it is clear that the Sarahs have made great progress this is amazing I know it's really really like it's I mean we are so completely different like why like tell me like what's different than you not in the door it's obviously though but sure yeah I mean I think just control you know like calm and confident and in control of the situation hey calm down can you sit you know we just have slowed down a little bit yes I feel so much more calm this is our reality and it wasn't so so we're looking forward to someone inviting us to a Sunday fun day so so in that note I before your final challenge okay okay the team and I were created uh something outside for you guys just to gather everybody and just um celebrate sounds good Sarah Dean you can take Joplin Sarah Bernie you can take Carlo Joplin has always been the ring leader in this case when I first arrived at Sarah's anxiety caused her to bark and lunch around any visitors and dogs which kept this pack isolated from friends and family even after cover restrictions were lifted for everyone else but if the Sarahs can maintain this new level of calmness from Joplin and Carlo I see a lot of long overdue get-togethers in the future so that's their final challenge an old-fashioned get together with humans and dogs Sarah's coming up okay I want you to stay calm confident [Music] relax area [Music] calm down calm down it's ready relax relax over here let's put a little relaxation on that leash and that will be better this is the first time in two years that the whole pack will try to socialize together if this series can do this then they will finally free themselves from their self-imposed canine quarantine ah so the starting line is going to be those two cones and the whole goal is for you to mingle with everybody just take your time two three seconds with each one just remember the ranch you love the Llama so yeah okay we can do this All right so you first Sarah Dean all right relax there we go there we go have fun with life there you go [Music] completely [Applause] hey there you go Joplin was a little resistant at first but she just needed a little correction that's a big improvement from day one and that's all thanks to Sarah Dean's calm confidence but that's only half of today's goal to ensure there is harmony within this pack all four of them must calmly walk around the dogs and humans this is something that has typically led to chaos in the past so this will be the ultimate test all right let's do it let's go I think you're ready to have Joplin off leash this time the wind dog is meant to be awesome make her feel your confidence awesome yes [Music] yes hi hi perfect you too when the family is together guys that's when the magic happens so when they feel that you believe in yourself and you believe in the process and there's no need to be inside the house you know full of fear full of hesitation or full of stress so happy she's a different dog yeah she is hello Wild there you go good good girl yes we first met this path everyone was socially stuck and isolated the series were basically in jail fearful and clueless now they're in harmony that's beautiful what changed the energy of the two Sarahs amazing this truly amazing you see it so once you start seeing energy for what it is and then you utilize it yeah and then you're calling the shots they were able to put their fear and anxiety behind them and walk both dogs with calm confident leadership if they continue down this path there will be many more parties and pack walks and their future now now because you know so much you have to give it yes the only way it grows yeah you know it works I feel accomplished we're seeing the results that we really wanted and I think now I can be in control of a situation Joplin has shown me that it doesn't have to be difficult to own a dog or it doesn't have to be a chore to go out and walk them this is what life should be about especially with a dog you know dogs are here to make us feel free to bring us together right I think with Joplin you know before this whole experience we were pretty limited you know where we could go who we could be around and so now I feel Limitless I'm just really excited to continue appreciate it thank you congrats thank you so much thank you so much thank you thank you thank you thank you all right let's go join the party the Kobe lockdown may be all by over but there's still dogs who are not able to trust people from outside their own bubble it's kept many pet parents locked and quarantined but it doesn't have to be that way once a human realizes they're the ones causing their dog social anxiety Then the whole family can break free from the lockdown and become the pack they're always wanted to be thank you [Music]
