Le conquer one of karting's most prolific circuits one of the best karting tracks in the world and as a result it kind of hosts almost everything there is to host in 2015 the track would be used to run the cik FIA World carton championships in this year's junior Championship there are some names running around that we would come to know in the future Felipe drugovich Carl Colette claima novalec Christian lungardt and so on some genuine karting Prodigy strewn throughout the field all of them stupidly fast but there can only be one winner at the end of the 21st lap the Ricky Flynn Motorsport driver took the chicken flag to become the world champion the first American World Champion since Lake speed in 1978 the 2015 World Champion is Logan Sergeant or as this commentator so eloquently put it Target Sanchez an overly enthusiastic Italian Australian yelling a day keeps the doctor away frankly the enthusiasm is welcome here because it appeared that America had a literal winner on their hands here pun not intended I'm not that clever hailing from Florida Logan Hunter Sergeant was bestowed a name so apocalyptically American but even U.S Navy aircraft carriers pale in comparison Logan's Niche lay in Motorsport and was quite successful in his early forays and karting almost too successful I mean he only won the Rotex Grand Nationals and Florida winter tour in 2009. SK USA supernationals South Florida rmx Challenge and ROK cup International in 2011 Andrea maraguti trophy in 2012 SK USA supernationals and 2014 wsk Champions Cup and cik FAA Junior World Championship in 2015 and wsk champions cup and 2016. so you know modest a lot of this two coming after moving to Europe at the age of 12. just simply so he can compete against the best and prove himself so there was a fair case to take the step up to cars for 2017. I mean would anyone be protesting that first order of business compete in a winter series to get a Zion competing in the formula 4 championship of the United Arab Emirates two things went wrong for him in this journey firstly he picked the wrong Championship should have done the Toyota rating series and secondly he was parked at motor park alongside Jonathan Aberdeen who slaughtered him a little susp perhaps but this was all in preparation for the real challenge that year the British formula 4 Championship driving at Carlin he would be competing against Jamie Caroline and unfortunately for sergeant it was Caroline who would win the title now yeah one could argue that Sergeant was still green that Caroline had an extra year of racing in that category and that as the year Drew on sergeants started to draw closer what's more he finished the championship a respectable Third only just behind Oscar pastry a dude who will be seeing again for sure he also did a couple of races in Formula Renault toward the end of the year although this wasn't just some young kid born with a silver spoon in his mouth spending money recklessly these races served a purpose he was looking to be race fit for a full season of the stuff come 2018 as teammates that year being Max Futrell Sharma Lisi and Victor Martin a very impressive lineup and in the case of melisi and Martin Logan beat them both as philando's walking psychic however it was he who would win the title while Sergeant finished down in P4 although winning the first race of that season with the fastest lap before winning another two races that year proved that he was no slouch it was not a disappointing season in any slight 2019 however well that wasn't so hot at least not on the surface if you were to look at the lineup for Colin that year they had sergeant drewgovic and Natori none of them were bad drivers and their CVS proved that yet if you look at the standings for that year it does make you question a lot of things about the sport about how maybe just maybe Junior spec series racing isn't totally equal teammates however well they are comparable if you were to take it at face value then I get it Drogo finishing a headed Sergeant in the standings kind of says it all doesn't it well hip-hop where I tell you that nah it ain't quite the full story in terms of outright Pace Sergeant seemed to have the edge over his teammates and finished in the points four times that season compared to drogo's one-off and Hungary but perhaps one instance where Sergeant proved his worth was on the streets of Macau the Macau Grand Prix test the will of every sentient human being but if a dare set foot upon it you've got to commit otherwise you end up in the barrier if you commit you'd probably still end up in the barrier but you'd also probably Place yourself further up the grid if you survive and give yourself a better shot at Victory Sergeant was still in with Colin and despite their struggles throughout the year they were and always have been a good team for this Grand Prix Natori was out and his replacement was Dan tictum making an already tough teammate lineup even tougher especially given that tectum had already won this race twice previously and was looking to win this race for the third time in a row but it wasn't he who Sean that weekend for their American teammate of his took to the streets very nicely climbing up through the fields and took third place outright after qualifying on a track where you can't pass granted crashed cars are somewhat easy to pass but there were plenty more besides where he hustled the car and proved his worth and up until the end of the race he was right there within sight of eventual Richard vershaw and battling Yuri that's hard for the runner-up position this weekend proved two things that the people at Carlin deserved a pizza for turning their form around and that Sergeant was pretty good at turning a steering wheel coupled this with a comfortable budget for the racing year and a will to get further up the Groves he decided to secure his seat with the very best for 2020 he would stick to Formula 3 but this time he'd be driving for the Prima racing outfit anyone driving for this team toward the end of the 2010s was virtually guaranteed a Formula 3 Championship provided they beat their teammates in whatever means they do it in the year 2020 Sergeant would be one of those Premier Pilots the other two being Frederick Vesti and Oscar piastri when it came to qualifying these two very rarely had the upper hand on Sergeant this dude was proving to be lethal over one lap including taking three pole positions in a row from Silverstone to Barcelona after taking a win at spa and with two rounds remaining Sergeant sat atop the standings the title within sight but I bought this up for a reason didn't I you just know that this whole thing collapsed somehow why else would I bring it up so may as well delve into it in the first race at monster he was sent off to find an alternative route but Claymont novalag which subsequently proved not to be the most advantageous of shortcuts the next race however was more of a self-inflicted wound giving teammate Vesti about an inch less than a car with which proved to be about an inch not enough Sergeant picked up a puncher and threw him out of the points going a whole round without points meant he was now behind piastri heading into the final round at magello all of this was not made easier by the fact that teapore share was getting annoyingly closer to the title battle in that first magella race Sergeant scored points P asteri did not that meant they were both tied for the lead of the championship heading into that final race although Porsche was lying in wait should any of them goof up come Sunday race day came and one of them did goof up to be fair being crowded out like that he kind of had nowhere to go just the unfortunate luck of the draw bats racing piastri squeaked home to take the title barely and Sergeant's wounds were further salted with news that Porsche passed him for second in the standings nonetheless knowing how Sergeant performed that year you would be a fool for thinking he was anything less than impressive it certainly was impressive enough for a promotion to formula 2. just one little problem that comfortable Hill of money he had it wasn't comfortable enough at least it wasn't enough so that the sergeants can Fork Out 3 million euros a year to race in the category he ended up staying in F3 for another year although this time he was in with shrouds for him this was a double whammy treading water in F3 and now with the worst team with the greatest of respect he was also picking up whatever drives he could in GT cars he knew he wanted to make a living out of driving cars but with the ludicrous amount of money that it takes to get to formula one it really did seem that that particular dream was over maybe endurance racing possibly Indica formula one though no it did kind of seem that that ship had come and gone but when he started winning races in a freaking shrouse it put everyone on notice this wasn't the natural Order of Things someone who could win with this team in 2021 had to have some Talent the Williams F1 team saw this too and Julie signed him to their driver Academy whilst not being a total free lunch they did help out with funding and opportunities this led to Sergeant driving in a one-off appearance in that stupidly expensive sport known as formula 2. in that round he would last nearly two seconds faster than his teammates granted his teammate was Alessio deleda but you play the hand you're dealt even if said hand contained a stack of jokers and the business card of an abandoned nightclub all this came in preparation for 2022 he would race in Formula 2 at Carlin alongside Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson a dude who irate very highly if we're talking about anything other than his haircut the initial plan for sergeant was two years in Formula two hit the goal set by The Williams driver Academy and go from there there was a real chance here that he could land a formula one seat in the near future and that was important because the last four all time F1 driver from America was Scott speed and that is a headache we would like to consign to the history books the last American and F1 in any capacity was Alexander Rossi in 2015. before that it was speed in 2007 before that even it was Michael Andretti in 1993. think about that from 1993 to the present day only three American drivers have graced that Formula One grid whether it would have been Sergeant or Colson herter there needed to be another American driver on that grid soon not purely because of their passports not just because of the marketing value that it holds but because there have been so many amazing drivers to come from that Nation they needed to prove to the world that yes we can turn right as well if Sergeant wanted to make an impression early qualifying ahead of Lawson in that first round what's a good start as the year Drew on he continued to progress and then when he dominated at Silverstone the Williams team looked at sergeant and then they looked at latifi and then looked at sergeant again and then looked at latifi again and said man you are expendable as eventually with everything that Sergeant was proving to the team and with latifi drowning on dry land they set him an ultimatum if you can get top six in the F2 Championship this year thus getting the super license points you're in for 2023 given the lack of testing time available to modern day F1 drivers he was put into the Williams car for the last four fp1 sessions that year racking up mileage and super license points whilst over in the F2 Championship he finished in P4 but Han Lawson but high enough up where it was pretty much confirmed that for 2023 Logan's Sergeant would be on the Formula One grid by the way true story Williams will be the only team on that Grid in 2023 with two world-karting Champions as their drivers mad in it so now that he's here how will he go in the Top Flight of Motorsport who knows although judging a rookie in his first race wouldn't be fair not in today's F1 anyway given testing is restricted to like 13 minutes on a calendar year think of it as a two-year deal the first year should be used to learn the second to prove their worth perhaps even before that second year has come he'd have proven he belongs in the sport or maybe the opposite would happen either way a world champion Carter and proven speed in the junior formulas seems like the right driver to be on that formula one group perhaps in the years to come Grand Prix podiums around the world were echoed to the same sounds that were bellied out on that fateful day in 2015. look at Sanjay [Music]
