well if you take your copy of god's word and open  to mark's gospel chapter 8 mark's gospel chapter 8   will be where we begin this conference and i will  read verses 27 down through verse 31. and as we   give our attention to the reading of scripture  let us understand that this conference is   the whole purpose is to seek to unpack who  jesus christ actually is and so we begin   mark chapter number 8 verse 27  the word of god reads as follows and jesus went on with his disciples  to the villages of caesarea philippi   and on the way he asked his  disciples who do people say that i am   and they told him john the baptist and others  say elijah and others one of the prophets   and he asked him but who do you say that i  am peter answered him you are the christ and   he strictly charged them to tell no one about  him if you would join me in prayer at this time father we love you and we thank you for the  privilege now to be here gathered in this room   for the purpose of worship to magnify the very  one who is seated upon the majestic throne in   glory slaying on the cross for sinners buried in  a borrowed tomb and resurrected on the third day   and here we are gathered for that very purpose  to worship and to magnify christ so we ask now   that you would allow us to grow spiritually we  ask that you would help us to see and understand   what the word of god teaches us about jesus christ  now we ask this in christ's name amen i don't know   about you but i have sat through many sermons  through the years where at the conclusion of the   sermon i was moved in my heart to think that  perhaps the preacher should offer an apology   for what he had just preached and as i reflect  on that i i think about this conference   and i think that we're going to hear sermon  after sermon after sermon after sermon on christ   so rather than apologizing merely at the  end of the sermon that i'm about to preach   i think it would be fitting for me to  offer an apology at the very beginning   no matter how good these sermons will be   no matter how well we see christ in the singing of  the gospel and in the word preached and proclaimed we will only be able to scratch the  mere surface of who jesus actually   is so it would do us well now and it would  do me well to just apologize to all of us   i think it would be fitting to hear some  faithful men of history who have done   that very thing to apologize for the inability to  actually unpack the fullness of christ john newton   once said the following it is impossible  that either men or angels can fully sound   the depth of this one sentence that jesus  christ came into the world to save sinners   the 17th century puritan john owen a towering  giant of church history once penned the following   in his work biblical theology he said the  following it has been my professed intent   and stated purpose almost my one and only purpose  in this work to set forward the theology of christ   this is not just the teaching of the gospel  but the disposition of mind which alone can   embrace it and that goal has been ever present  before my eyes from the start of this volume   i personally do not claim to have attained to any  great peak in the study of heavenly wisdom or to   be able to do more than stammer pitifully when  i come to discuss or teach of such high matters   here we are on ground where at best we can hope  to see in part here is subject matter which the   entire breadth of human intellect could never  grasp that is until we cease to see through a   glass darkly and come to know even as we are known  as we enjoy god without limit there is little need   of our denying our deep ignorance and shame of  sloth when the same apostle in that epistle admits   that if any man think he knoweth anything  he knoweth nothing yet is he ought to know   first corinthians 8 2. so on behalf of all of  the preachers who will preach from this pulpit   over the next three days we apologize for the  inability to fully unpack who christ actually is   and in 10 million years off into eternity  we will still be learning this christ   but this conference why a conference on christ  you say well the cults have attacked jesus   the academy attacks jesus the white house  attacks jesus so as we think about the person   in the work of christ we must be reminded of  the reality that it seems that every group   on planet earth seems to have their very own  jesus there is the sappy happy jesus the nice   religious guy who smiles at everyone and accepts  everyone just as they are there's the white   jesus this european version of jesus that shows  up in certain homes and even churches that tries   to give us this image of who jesus is that's  a sermon for another day but suffice it to say   i wouldn't hang those in my home if i were you  there's a superhero jesus a powerful figure who   uses majestic power and flexes his divine muscle  but seems to minimize the very humanity of jesus   there's the christmas jesus this little helpless  baby that is unpacked at christmas and then put   back in his little box and stored away  in the attic right about new year's day   and then there's the community center jesus this  social justice figure this divine sociologist who   seeks to help people socially economically and  relationally and as we think about that very   jesus that's become the popular jesus of our day   as we think about the the governor of new york  in her recent speech as she was talking about   making apostles who would go out and do the work  in jesus name as she was referencing a vaccine   you see there is a push at this very present  hour to invent a new safe christianity   that has a new safe gospel and that has a new safe  jesus and you need to be aware of this and so our   view of jesus matters it will determine where  we spend eternity it will determine how we pray   it will determine how we sing it will determine  how we preach it will determine how we evangelize   it will determine how we worship the background  here of mark's gospel is a man by the name of   john mark as we think about his name when my  youngest daughter callie was a young girl she   would say his front name is john and his end  name is mark we named our son after this man   he was a traveling companion of the apostle paul  we understand that the the mission did not go well   john mark and paul there was a separation but  of course we see at the very end of paul's   ministry they had been reconciled together  we see this in second timothy chapter four   god used this individual that we see as mark to do  wonderful things and one of the great things that   he was used for was to pin this account of the  gospel of jesus and as we see in this very text   that's before us in mark chapter 8 verses 27 down  to verse number 30 we see that up unto this point   mark's gospel has really been unpacking who jesus  is telling the story of the life and the ministry   of jesus and really there's been a veil over  the true identity of jesus from the public stage   of the community and so it's at this point that  a transition happens in mark's gospel where   jesus is going to be unpacked if you will and  unveiled for everyone to see and understand   who he actually is and so as we think about the  importance for the disciples to know who jesus   is the same thing is true for us we  need to know who jesus actually is   and so that's the goal of this very sermon as  we look now beginning in verse number 27 and   we're going to see two questions and we're going  to see two answers the first thing that we want   to see in verses 27 to 28 is the great confusion  of the culture the great confusion of the culture   notice if you will jesus is going along with his  disciples into the villages of caesarea philippi   and as they were making their  way jesus turns to his disciples   he's having a conversation with his inner circle  he's speaking with the men that he's been pouring   his life into and he asked this question who do  people say that i am and the disciples had been   with jesus for a while up to this point they  had heard his sermons they had seen his works   but jesus is asking a general question of the  general culture of the populous if you will   can you imagine what it would have been like to  sit under the preaching of jesus consider his his   sermons if you just think about the the sermons  of jesus in mark chapter 1 if you were to go back   and look at verses 14 and 15 now after john was  arrested this is a reference to john the baptist   jesus came into galilee proclaiming the gospel  of god and this is what he was saying the time   is fulfilled the kingdom of god is at hand  repent and believe the gospel this was the   preaching of jesus and of course the gospel was  more than a genre of music or a type of preaching   or a category for book publications it  was a message about god saving sinners   in mark chapter number one in verses 38 and  39 jesus is seen preaching in the synagogues   jesus was first and foremost a preacher he was  sent to preach the good news and of course as the   great prophet that is exactly what he did if you  go to mark chapter number three in verse number 14   you will see that he was preaching if you go to  mark chapter four verse one you see that he was   teaching if you go to mark chapter six verse six  you will see that jesus was teaching so jesus had   been preaching and teaching and preaching and  teaching but the disciples not only witnessed   that and others in the community had seen this and  heard this but they had also witnessed miracles   miracles and signs and wonders for the  purpose of validating who jesus actually is   jesus healed the sick and diseased he cast out  demons he cleansed the person with leprosy he   healed a paralytic man jesus healed a man with  a withered hand jesus killed the demon-possessed   man with the legion of demons jesus calmed the  raging storm jesus rebuked the wind and the waves   and they obeyed him jesus fed 5 000 men plus  women and children many estimate upwards of 15   to more than 20 000 people with just a little  boy's lunch and he could have done it without that   but he chose to use the boy's lunch jesus walked  on water as if it were dry land jesus healed the   gentile woman's daughter jesus made the lame to  walk the mute to speak and the death to hear again   in mark's gospel in only 16 chapters we  find 20 miracles and this question was a   question about the populist the general  community what's the word on the street and this was the way they responded john the baptist others say elijah and others one of the prophets  the disciples gave three possibilities of who   jesus actually is according to the community  according to the general populace if you will   the consensus was that jesus might actually be  john the baptist remember what jesus said of john   the baptist in matthew chapter 11 he said truly  i say to you among those born of women there has   arisen no one greater than john the baptist this  blazing prophet had been put to death by herod   he was a faithful preacher of repentance  a faithful preacher of righteousness   and yet at a drunken party by a wicked man and a request by a wicked woman there was john the  baptist who was imprisoned and his head was placed   on a platter in 2017 we led a church history tour  through germany to celebrate the 500th anniversary   of the protestant reformation at the end of that  tour we came to amsterdam for a little post-tour   opportunity to visit some museums and different  things and we went into this one museum where   the famous night watch is by rembrandt and so the  whole buzz was we're going gonna get to see the   night watch we went in and we stood before  this masterpiece and as i'm listening to   the tour guide give us every detail more details  than i needed to know about the night watch at   some point i started to sort of drift off and so  i decided to walk about in the adjacent rooms and   see what other art was there and i walked to my  right into this this other room and i found this   smaller much smaller painting  that was hanging there on the wall   and the painting really caught my attention it  was striking in fact i was more amazed by what i   was seeing than than in the other room with this  well-known famous masterpiece it was a painting   of herodius's daughter standing there with a  platter and john the baptist's head on it and   it was a striking reminder of the reality of the  cost of following jesus christ and we need to be   reminded of that when we think about john the  baptist ministry we think about his preaching   and then of course if you go into other places  in the gospels you will find that you have herod   who's asking his disciples the very same question  who do people say that this jesus actually is   and they provided similar answers and at the  conclusion of their answering herod he concluded   that jesus was john the baptist raised from  the dead which literally was a living nightmare   for herod john the baptist preached with the  boldness of a lion he was confrontational   he was passionate he was zealous he was  a judgment preacher he cut it straight   he didn't veil his message he  didn't try to entertain the   the masses and somewhere between his ministry  was somewhere between 6 and 12 months in total   and scholars estimate that during that period of  time upwards of 300 000 people would flock to hear   this prophet preach and john the baptist would  preach and he would not just preach and say you   need to ask jesus into your heart no no he was  preaching the gospel he was pointing people to   jesus the lamb of god who takes away the sin of  the world but he was also unafraid to call out sin   and apparently john the baptist did not embrace  this false idea of separation of church and state   this idea of separation of church and state  has plagued the church for for far too   many years the progressive the progressive  politician will use that against the church   to silence us herod did not uh he did not  fear a man that was afraid of preaching   righteousness herod feared a man who  was willing to preach this message   in fact in mark chapter 6 verse 18 it tells  us that john the baptist would actually say   to call out herod publicly that he should not  have his brother's wife that'll give you a little   taste of his preaching but think  about this for a moment if you will   if when asked that what's the word on the  street about the identity of jesus when jesus   asks his disciples to give the answer  and they say first out of the shoot   is john the baptist that should tell us  much about how jesus actually preached if you think about it in today's culture there's  no fear in confusing john macarthur in joel osteen   there's just different planets so when jesus looks  at his disciples and says who do people say that   i am and the first thing out of their mouths was  john the baptist that tells you an awful lot about   how jesus actually preached he was a no-nonsense  preacher jesus was a preacher not a talker   jesus was a prophet not a politician  he was a gospel preacher not a salesman   he was committed to the truth not  manipulation and lies and techniques of   all sorts of common things in the  culture and philosophy in the world of man-made learning and so just just before i go  any further just let me just press upon this for   a moment and encourage you men who stand in  the pulpit week after week that we need more   preaching like this today we need more preaching  like this as martin luther once stood before   a group of preachers in his day he said quote  this is not the hour for sleeping and snoring   but i'm afraid dear brothers  that there's an awful lot of   sleeping and snoring that's happening in  pulpits all across evangelicalism today i read an article by john mcarthur some years  ago where he was describing the problem of the   user-friendly phenomenon within modern  evangelicalism and he provided some   popular testimonies from these user-friendly  churches where members were giving testimonies   of their church it was a means of marketing  their church to the community one member   described their church by stating the following  the sermons are relevant upbeat and best of all   short you won't hear a lot of preaching about sin  and damnation and hell fire preaching here doesn't   sound like preaching it is sophisticated urbane  and friendly talk it breaks all of the stereotypes now if that was true back in 2008 you can   only imagine what people are  saying about preaching today preaching has it become better it's actually  gotten worse in many ways j.i packer was a   student in the 1940s and he would go hear martin  lloyd jones preach on sunday evenings he described   the preaching of martin lloyd jones as coming  to him with the force of an electric shock   and this is what this was just uh his testimony he  said this he said i had never heard such preaching sadly today many church members  have never heard real preaching   and when churches call a pastor  who would dare actually get down   to business and open the word of god  and rightly divide the word of truth instead of coddling the church to sleep by  moralistic tales and slick business presentations   and church growth gimmicks rather than red-hot  gospel preaching many churches become offended   because they've never heard such preaching  brothers and sisters we need preaching   like this today at this very hour i like the  way that stephen lawson puts it he says the very   last thing that we need today is men tripping  over their skirts on their way to the pulpit   we need men who have backbones who will stand   flat-footed without qualifying every  single thing and preach the word of god and may that be the way that you preach  dear brother the second possibility that   they mentioned was some say that you're  elijah the prophet based on an incorrect   interpretation of malachi's prophecy some  thought that jesus was elijah who had returned   in malachi chapter 4 we find these words in verse  5 behold i will send you elijah the prophet before   the great and awesome day of the lord comes and  he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their   children and the hearts of children to their  fathers lest i come and strike the land with a   decree of utter destruction you see in the days  of malachi marriages had been broken faith in   god had been abandoned and the powerful prophet  spoke and said that god would send his elijah   now later we will find that jesus actually  identifies john the baptist as that one who was   prophesied by malachi but yet some were misreading  the text and saying that jesus was this elijah   now if you think about elijah and his ministry a  bold ministry a powerful bold prophet of israel's   history and like john the baptist elijah preached  with the boldness of a lion he was courageous he   was outspoken he did not pull his punches consider  elijah as he confronts the prophets of baal   elijah confronted the sinful nation of israel  elijah was a a blazing prophet and many people   mistook jesus for elijah this means that  the idea of jesus being some milk toast   soft-handed man walking around  roaming the earth in a long robe   saying nice things to people is not the jesus  of the bible people who try to take the bible   and twist it to posture this this false  jesus as this guy who just comes to be   nice this safe ecumenical tame religious figure  they need to keep reading all the way to the east   side of their bible to see that jesus  is not a tame lion he is not jesus was   bold and confrontational he drew a line in the  sand and he preached the message of repentance you consider how he confronted the pharisees  in matthew 23 verse 27 woe to you scribes and   pharisees you hypocrites for you are like white  washed tombs which outwardly appear beautiful but   within are full of dead people's bones and all in  cleanness this is how jesus preached to the wicked   people of his day the third possibility was that  jesus could possibly be one of the prophets of old   some said well no he's not john the baptist  he's not elijah but he's one of the prophets   in matthew's account he actually goes and  names jeremiah as one of the possibilities   this weeping prophet passion faithfulness to god  perhaps some thought that maybe he was samuel   this faithful prophet who had hat king aeg to  pieces because of the disobedience of the king   but as we survey the word of god we see that  the bible reveals to us that the prophet is   called the man of god in first samuel chapter  2. the prophet is a servant and a messenger of   the lord in isaiah 42 the prophet was called  a seer in isaiah chapter 30. the prophet was   a man of the spirit or an inspired man of god  we find this in hosea chapter 9 and the prophet   was a watchman for the people and we see this  in ezekiel chapter 3. and so jesus actually   he actually embodied all of those characteristics  of a prophet because he was the prophet that was   greater than moses but here's the problem with  the mistaken identity the entire jewish culture   failed to recognize who jesus actually is the common consensus of the confused culture  was that he's herod's living nightmare he's   the blazing prophet elijah or he's one of  the prophets of of old and no wonder they   crucified jesus on a cross because the  very prophets of old israel killed them in john chapter number 1 verses 9 through 11  the true light which gives light to everyone was   coming into the world he was in the world and the  world was made through him yet the world did not   know him he came into his own and  his own people did not receive him   what a tragedy the great confusion of a dark culture the second thing we see  involves another question in verses 29   down to verse number 31 jesus narrows the focus in  verse number 29 he says but who do you say that i   am this is the clarified question if you will  jesus narrowed the focus for his apostles   jesus wasn't so interested although he was  using his as a teaching opportunity what the   consensus of the culture was or what the word  on the street was he was using that to come   down to business with his own people but who do  you say that i am the most important question   that could ever be asked of you in the history of  humanity is this very question but who do you say   that i am that's what jesus asked his disciples  and so i placed the same question before you   by way of application who do you say that jesus  is who do you believe that this jesus actually is   it's the most important question  that you could ever be asked   your eternal destiny is hinged upon  this you will either bow to jesus christ   or you will be sent off into a to  an eternity of the wrath of god but you will bow before him either  now or at the judgment who do you say   that jesus is and here's the clarified answer  this bold outspoken leader of the pack if you will   peter among the apostles answers for the for  the rest of the group he just speaks up he   just burst forward and he says you are the christ  william hendrickson in his commentary says quote   a true believer is one who is willing whenever  necessary to fly in the face of popular opinion   and openly to express a conviction  that is contrary to that of the masses   that is exactly what peter  was doing you are the christ   and we must understand in a conference on  christ that christ is not the last name of jesus   christ is a title she used some 497 times in  the new testament we find this this word christ   christos the literal meaning is that he is the  anointed one of god he is the promised messiah   of god in matthew chapter one we find the book of  the genealogy of jesus christ the son of david the   son of abraham we see that jesus is mentioned in  a specific fashion in a genealogy and by the way   genealogies matter and it was to point to the  reality that there had always been this promise   and jesus is this christ my all-time favorite  christmas carol was pinned by charles wesley   and the third verse reads as follows christ by  highest heaven adored christ the everlasting lord   laid in time behold him come offspring of the  virgin's womb veiled in flesh the godhead sea   hail the incarnate deity pleased with us in  flesh to dwell jesus our emmanuel jesus is   the christ of god the old testament prophets  had been promising that god would one day send   the messiah and john the baptist ministry was to  say this jesus is the one that had been promised   he is the christ of god he is the lamb of  god who takes away the sin of the world all throughout the word of god all throughout  the old testament we find that in genesis 3 15   i will put enmity between you and the woman  and between your offspring and her offspring   he shall bruise your head and you shall bruise  his heel from genesis 3 15 the first proclamation   of the gospel all the way through malachi you  have consistent prophecies that god would send   his christ he would come through the the seed  of the woman he would come through the line of   shem he would come through the line of abraham of  judah jesse of david he would come from the town   of bethlehem micah 5 2 tells us he will come as  a child and a son isaiah chapter 9 tells us this   he will be born of a virgin isaiah chapter 7  he will be called immanuel he will be called   the lord our righteousness jeremiah 23. he  will be called wonderful counselor mighty god   everlasting father prince of peace isaiah  chapter 9 he will come in humility zechariah 9   he will serve as a prophet in israel's history  deuteronomy 18. he will bring good news to the   afflicted isaiah chapter 61 he will wash  away the guilt of sinners isaiah 4 he will   serve as a channel of divine blessing to the  world we find this in the abrahamic covenant   he will be rejected and pierced and crushed by  god the father isaiah 53 and multiple other texts   he will die a substitutionary  sacrifice for guilty sinners   isaiah 53 he will be resurrected from the  dead psalm 16 he will come again in judgment   upon the nations isaiah chapter 63 he will bring  destruction to the enemies of israel numbers 24 he will bring salvation to true israel and reign  over her as king isaiah 49 micah 5 2 jeremiah 23   and countless other texts he will be given glory  and everlasting dominion over all the nations of   the earth and his kingdom will be established  forever daniel 7 2 samuel 7 psalm 132 and   additional verses reveal this to us this was the  consistent promise that god would send his christ   and when jesus arrived he did so in poverty  rather than in riches he grew up in a carpenter   shop rather than in a palace he led a mission by  preaching rather than with swords his army was a   group of ragtag underestimated preachers rather  than a marching army of soldiers jesus did not   look like a military ruler he did not talk like  a king and so they completely rejected that jesus   was the christ of god but as the christ  of god he pleased he pleased the father   in his obedient life in matthew chapter 5 verse 17  do not think that i have come to abolish the law   or the prophets i have not come to abolish them  but to fulfill them you see what does it mean that   you are the christ it means that he fulfills  all of these prophecies he embodies them all   and he in his obedient life upholds the law of  god something that the first adam was incapable   of doing as the christ of god he pleased the  father in his preaching of the truth in john   chapter 1 verse 17 for the law was given through  moses grace and truth came through jesus christ   at his transfiguration you will recall in matthew  17 verse 5 he was still speaking when behold   a bright cloud overshadowed them and a voice from  the cloud said this is my beloved son with whom   i am well pleased listen to him as the christ of  god he pleased the father in his sacrificial death   in isaiah chapter 53 verse 6 all  we like sheep have gone astray   we have turned everyone to his own way and the  lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all   in isaiah chapter 53 verse 10 it states yet it  was the will of the lord it was the will of yahweh   to crush him as the christ of god he pleased  the father in his victorious resurrection   i am the resurrection and the life john 11 25  you see jesus was identified with the father   in visible proof through his resurrection i am  one with the father this is what jesus said in   his preaching and people rejected him people  wanted to stone him for speaking this way   and yet in his resurrection the christ of god the  christ of god validated everything he had preached   and everything that john the baptist had preached  about him and as the christ of god he pleased   the father in his saving mission jesus was more  than a carpenter he was more than a common rabbi   he was more than a noble teacher jesus was more  than a man who just went about performing miracles   jesus as peter declared is the christ of god  and it is the christ who comes to save sinners   matthew chapter 1 verse 21 you remember that  the angel spoke to joseph in his despair   she shall bring forth a son and you shall call  his name jesus for he shall save his people   from their sin no doubt about it that jesus was  going to save his people as the christ of god   in human flesh jesus has authority over demons  and disease and the laws of nature he created them   jesus has authority over salvation a.w tozer once said quote jesus is not one of  many ways to approach god nor is he the best   of several ways he is the only way john 3 36  whoever believes in the son has eternal life   whoever does not obey the son shall not see life  but the wrath of god remains on him it is only in   christ that the chains of sin can be broken it  is only in christ that the penalty of sin can   be paid it is only in christ that sinners can be  reconciled to a holy and sovereign god it is only   in christ that there is the hope of salvation  jesus said without any shadow of any doubt   i am the way the truth and the life no man comes  unto the father but by me jesus is the only way jesus is the christ mary baker eddy can't save  anyone jim jones can't save anyone david koresh   can't save anyone charles tays russell can't  save anyone mohammed can't save anyone but it   is the christ of god who saves sinners the very  reason that we're in this room today is because   of that very truth the very reason that  we have hope that when we lay our head   on our pillow this evening if we drift off into  eternity that we have been saved by this christ   this is why we can sing my sin oh the bliss of  this glorious thought my sin not in part but the   whole is nailed to the cross and i bear it no  more praise the lord praise the lord o my soul   one day you see one day when jesus returns every  knee will bow and every tongue shall confess   that jesus christ is lord to the glory of  god the father and on that very day the   religious views of athens the philosophies  of corinth the isms of ancient rome the   man-centered views of socrates the philosophy  of plato the views of cicero the naturalistic   views of a godless culture the atheistic views  of men like dawkins and hitchens and others   the progressive views of of american politics the  critical social justice ideologies of our present   hour secular humanism notwithstanding will all  come crumbling down before the throne of this   very christ who is clothed in majesty and power  and sovereign authority he is the christ of god and we would be foolish to think that in a crowd  in a conference of this size numbering near 6500   people from all 50 states and multiple countries  from around the world and and who knows how   many watching through live stream that every  single one of us in this room is a christian if you're in this room today and you  have never bowed before this christ   i encourage you to bow before him see yourself for who you are a  helpless worm full of human depravity in the chains of sin unable to save yourself   unable to flex your fleshly muscle  to save yourself to deliver yourself and call out upon this one believing that  he suffered and bled and died in your place that holy justice has been satisfied in his   death on the cross buried in a tomb and  resurrected on the third day proving that he   has authority to save sinners put your faith and  trust in him and the bible says that you will be   saved but remember the words of jesus this christ  in matthew chapter 7 enter by the narrow gate for   the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads  to destruction and those who enter by it are many   for the gate is narrow and the way is hard that  leads to life and those who find it are few pastors don't throw in the white towel in  this age this dark age of our present culture   don't give up keep preaching have confidence in  the word of the living god it is the sufficient   word of god that reveals to us who this  christ is and preach this christ boldly   during this hour to my fellow  christians do not grow weary in doing be faithful he said you are the christ and he strictly charged them to tell no one about  him that was because his hour had not yet come and   he was about to prepare his disciples to send  them out boldly to preach openly who christ   actually is and now we stand upon their shoulders  and we must do the very same thing jesus is not   the social justice jesus the happy sappy jesus  the psychology jesus or the holiday jesus he is   the christ of god he is the king of kings he is  the lord of lords he is the son of the living god   this past week paul washer and  i were talking on the phone   and i said you have any words of wisdom as  i lead this conference in the first session   and he said we got to talking about a book  that he has written and some other things and   some puritans as they apologized as i started in  my sermon we talked about the need for an apology   so not only do i want to start my  sermon with an apology i want to end it   with one as well john flavel  once lamented his inability to   to really understand and to really  proclaim who christ is this is what he said but let me tell you the whole world is  not a theater large enough to show the   glory of christ upon or unfold the  one half of the unsearchable riches   that he hid in him these things will be far  better understood and spoken of in heaven   by the noon day divinity in which the  immediately illuminated assembly do their preach   his praises then by such a stammering tongue and  scribbling pen is mine which doth but mar them   when we have borrowed metaphors from every  creature that hath any excellency or lovely   property in it till we have stripped the whole  creation bear of all its ornaments and clothed   christ with all that glory when we have even worn  out our tongues and ascribing praises to him alas   we have done nothing when all is done  end quote dear brothers and sisters may   you be steadfast immovable always abounding in  the work of the lord knowing that in the lord   your labor is not in vain may god bless you
