following our show on the infamous serial killer known as Jack the Ripper we thought we'd look at another equally fascinating crime story that of the Zodiac killer that has baffled both investigators and the public alike these two beasts were not the only prolific killers never to be caught but perhaps the most well known other serial killers that got away with it include the Atlanta Ripper India's stone man the Axman of New Orleans and one person that had the terrifying name of the babysitter there are plenty more but maybe none who led police on such a confounding wild goose chase as the person we are going to discuss today so wrap your heads around this episode of the infographic show the Zodiac serial killer how did he evade the police I like killing people because it's so much fun these were the chilling words were in in a letter by someone we know as the Zodiac killer but where did the killing begin well the Zodiac a name he gave to himself in the letters he sent to police claimed to have killed 37 people in total but that may not be the case police are pretty sure he killed at least five people and injured two others but they also say there is a possibility he was responsible for another 20 to 28 murders the earliest confirmed murder didn't take place until 1968 but it's widely believed that the Zodiac was working much earlier than that the first confirmed murders were those of a young couple Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday killed on December 20th 1968 the couple pulled into a place named Lovers Lane probably about to reach first base on what was said to be their first date they didn't get too far because a man approached their vehicle and shot the man in the head the girl ran but was shot five times in the back a few months later the Zodiac would claim these murders as his own and he would share details only the killer could have known you can go back much earlier though to 1963 and again this Terrorizer of the night picked on young people highschool lovers Robert Domingo's and Linda Edwards used senior ditch day to go for a sunbathe at Gaviota State Park in California they never made it home the boy's dad found the bodies after becoming worried about his son being out for a long time when he went to the beach to look for them he found both his son and the girlfriend tied the boy had been shot 11 times and the girl nine times this may or may not have been our man the des OD AK kill 18 year-old sherry Josephine Bates brutally stabbed several times and her throat slashed so hard it almost decapitated her that was in 1966 and it was some years later that police thought this too could have been the work of the zodiac police are sure the zodiac almost killed 19 year old Michael Magoo and did kill his 22 year old girlfriend Darlene Ferrin both were shot in 1969 while sitting in their car at Blue Rock Springs Park and Vallejo the killer later called the police and described exactly what had happened he finished the chilling call saying I also killed those kids last year goodbye he was referring to Jensen and Farraday perhaps the grisliest confirmed crime was that of two lovers 20 year-old Bryan Hartnell and 22 year-old Cecilia and Shepard the pair were relaxing at a lake in Napa County California when a man in a hooded costume with the zodiac emblem sewed on it told them he was a prison escapee he bound them with clothesline while they were on their backs he then stabbed the boys six times in the back turned to the screaming girl and stabbed her 10 times Hartnell actually survived the killer then went up to the couple's car and scrawled in pens some information about the other murders Hartnell unfortunately wasn't able to give police much information about the man that almost took his life the last confirmation and perhaps the closest the zodiac came to being caught was when he shot 28-year old Paul Stine in the back of his head from his taxicab in San Francisco he only just got away as police approached the scene but for some reason the cops were looking for a black suspect the cops thought it was a robbery until shortly after the San Francisco Chronicle received a letter sign from the zodiac the letter stated I am the murderer of the taxi driver and just to be sure the police believed him also inside the letter was a piece of the blood-stained shirt that Stein had been wearing on the night people did see a man near the cab that night though and now police thought they had some idea concerning what he looked like the zodiac said that was a bad version of him stating in a letter that the of the murder he was wearing a disguise there were many more suspected murders but we can't go through them all let's talk about these letters instead most of which were written with terrible handwriting the first letter sent in 1966 was titled of the confession he gets straight to the point starting with the lines she was young and beautiful but now she is battered and dead she is not the first and she will not be the last still it thought this could have been any delusional person perhaps not the actual Zodiac killer many more letters are suspected to have come from the zodiac but others have been confirmed on July 31st it's thought the zodiac sent a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle San Francisco Examiner and Vallejo times each newspaper had been sent one part of something called a cipher this may also be called a cryptogram and is a coded way of sending a message in this case it was a block of letters and symbols the Zodiac was some trickster while he later wrote a letter saying the cipher contained his name it was actually later discovered to have said I will not give you my name he sent a series of letters sometimes with ciphers the first cipher one worked out contained the message part of which read the best part of it is that when I die I will be reborn in paradise and all those that I have killed will become my slaves he even wrote to Chronicle reporter Paul Avery who had been working on the case it was a Halloween card that contained the text peekaboo you are doomed this was a threat a matter that became serious for Avery despite what the Zodiac movie tells us it was later sent by Avery's friends and colleagues that the case didn't drive him to drugs and drink and his eventual death that part is fiction said the people the last letter received was on January 29th 1974 in this letter the zodiac wrote that the film The Exorcist was a great satirical comedy he left a symbol that has never been explained and like that he was gone so why was he never caught well firstly some people do think the police had their man they just didn't have the sufficient evidence to get a conviction the prime suspect has always been Arthur Leigh Allen and he's the only one that police gained search warrants for several police officers have said they thought it was him Robert gray-smith the cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle who was very close to the case at the time of the murders wrote a book called zodiac and in it he puts Allen as the main culprit police were all over him for almost years and in the end had a lot of leaves bloody knives in his car matching footprints at the murder scene a knowledge of ciphers a positive ID from a survivor being seen close to one killing other people saying he had bragged about killing and had talked about naming himself zodiac he even had a history of abusing children and an apparent hatred for women although police said they just could not find enough evidence to convict him so perhaps it's as simple as that cops had their man but he slipped through their hands his handwriting didn't match and neither did his DNA on the envelopes of his zodiac letters Alan was found dead in 1992 at his home was it Richard gay Kowski a good fit for the sketch mentally unstable and most of all linked to the ciphers that were sent still the man's friends have given him solid alibis for some of the murders was an earl van best junior an absolute dead ringer for the Zodiac sketch and his name seems to appear in the ciphers some people have said it might have been the Unabomber aka Theodore J Kaczynski but given his intellect modus operandi and of course his twisted but profound reason for killing it just wouldn't make sense one connection we suppose is that they both wrote to newspapers to spread the news of their wicked gain was it Ricky Marshall who owned a typewriter and liked the same movies as the zodiac that's hardly a strong case was it mentally ill Lawrence Kane who knew coding whose name may have been in the ciphers and who was actually a colleague of one of the victims what about Ross Sullivan another mentally ill man that was close to the location of the murders and a good fit for the sketch and guess what the Zodiac once mentioned the Opera The Mikado written by none other than Gilbert & Sullivan the list goes on but these guys have all been discussed widely by people that have followed the case professionally and also all those online sleuths we have these days there are plenty of zodia logistic differential many hypotheses have been put forward from bad police work different police departments working on the case and not communicating well to good ol plain luck on the killer side to the fact the killer was likely not related in any way to any of the victims they usually are even if it means they regularly catch the same bus he chose his locations carefully for the most part which were often totally remote and far from each other we might also add that back in the 60s and 70s the forensic technology was primitive compared to now these days it's likely his murders would not have only been on CCTV but they'd be going viral after being posted on something like lively even the lead investigator on the zodiac case doesn't know why they didn't catch him in the end his name was Dave Toschi and we'll leave you with something he said why didn't we get this guy I ended up with a bleeding ulcer over this case it still haunts me it always will he's dead now today we will again be entering the realm of the McCobb we've already featured some despicable men in our other shows on killers but perhaps today's focus beats the other serial killers hands down in view of his sheer murderous nasaw surprising is that today's serial killer was an educated fella and in appearance could have been the quiet boy next door or the guy who sat opposite you in the office this is one of the reasons he was able to gain the trust of the people that he brutally killed he plagued the streets of the USA in the 1970s and it's thought he committed even more crimes than he admitted to so without further ado welcome to this episode of the infographic show America's most evil serial killer Ted Bundy Ted Bundy was born on November 24th 1946 his life ended in Florida's electric chair On January 24th 1989 his last words were Jim and Fred I'd like you to give my love to my family and friends he didn't ask for any kind of special final meal so he was given the standard meal for Florida's death row which was steak eggs hash browns toast with butter jelly milk coffee and juice according to reports he didn't touch any of it Bundy denied killing women at first and fought the charges for around a decade he even married a girl while he was on trial but she gave up on him when the truth came out Ted had a strange start in life as his young mother was ashamed she had him out of wedlock and so young Ted grew up believing a lie he had been told that he was actually the adopted son of his grandparents and that his mother was his sister he discovered the truth later he would never know his father stories differ as to what his household was like but it seems his grandfather had violent rages and that his grandmother was often an unhappy victim of those rages while Ted was handsome and apparently easy to talk to he would later admit that he found making friends difficult I didn't know what made people want to be friends he once said I didn't know what underlays social interactions he did normal things any young man might do such as go to church and date women he had girlfriends but upon any kind of rejection he would seek vengeance he went to university but it seems he was often distracted or not interested in the subject matter it seems psychology was his thing and he graduated with honors from the University of Washington in 1972 he even worked on the phones at a suicide prevention hotline Center and again he seemed to his colleagues like a normal sort of guy soon after this he enrolled in law school and became the assistant director on the Seattle Crime Prevention Advisory Commission one of the most unsettling things he did while working in this position was write a pamphlet offering women advice on how to prevent being raped Bundy of course would become a serial rapist in fact he probably already had raped by then so why do people use the superlative most evil well firstly it's thought that Bundy killed many more people than he admitted to killing he admitted to murdering at least 30 women but some people believe he may have killed as many as a hundred women Bundy told different people different stories but police investigating him believe that the killing may have started when he was just a teenager this is just speculation though it's widely believed that he kidnapped and killed an 8 year old when he was just 14 but there is no significant proof and Bundy always denied that we can't say the real proof of his villainy started in 1974 when Bundy was just 27 years old we can't go into details about every murder because there are too many and we feel that some of the crimes are just too gruesome to describe to you we will say that he chose young women usually students he would often attack them with an object while they were sleeping bludgeoning them to death or close to death after this he would sexually assault them other occasions its thought he would gain women's trust just because he knew how to talk and sometimes he would wear his arm in a sling to give the women the feeling he was injured and so perhaps not very dangerous Bundy would often decapitate his victims and sometimes keep the heads as a kind of trophy sometimes he would keep the bodies of his victims even grooming them and applying makeup to them and also performing certain acts with their lifeless bodies this makes him a necrophiliac perhaps something 99.99% of people on this planet just cannot understand many of his victims bodies were never found did he have a conscience he told police that he actually intended not to kill one of his victims a 16 year old girl and that he planned to allow her to go after he had sexually assaulted her according to him he wanted to give up killing but he told the cops that he had accidentally strangled her to death as he was trying to stop her screaming but one of the worst things is that Bundy was actually on the radar of the police for some time but they just needed more evidence to arrest him for murder it's likely they had no idea as to the extent of his viciousness in 1976 he was charged with kidnapping and assault and a year later he was charged with murder in prison it seems Escape was always on his mind and at one point while serving time in Utah State Prison he was found hiding outside the prison yard with a bag containing what was called an escape kit Bundy was in some ways very smart and he outfoxed authorities on many occasions in 1977 he was sent to Pitkin County Courthouse whereupon he asked to go to the library he had chosen to defend himself given his law experience and so did not have to wear shackles and handcuffs he said he wanted to visit the library to do some research whoever gave him permission to do so must have regretted it for the rest of his or her life because Bundy jumped out of a window and ran he headed towards aspen mountain and found an old abandoned cabin in the woods six days later he was recaptured was tired hungry and in pain due to a sprained ankle that resulted from his window jump believe it or not Bundy would escape again but he would get much farther relying on stolen cars and stolen food after his next escape headed to Florida and once settled he went over to Florida State University's Chie Omega sorority house there he walked into dorms where female students were sleeping he attacked four women in the space of 15 minutes some sources say more like an hour bludgeoning them and assaulting them in other ways he killed two of them and left the other two with serious physical injuries and psychological scars that would last a lifetime the community was in shock and notices were left around campus warning students to keep their windows and doors locked years later one of the surviving girls told The Washington Post I looked hard at him but to this day I remember nothing Bundy had used a blunt object to savagely and quickly beat the girls unconscious at the time of the report Bundy hadn't yet been executed one of his victims still bearing the scars of his attack was asked if she wanted to see him die he never gave any of us a stay she said the biggest injustice is that Margaret and Lisa had to die so violently so young it hurts all the time but she added being a Christian it is very difficult to watch him die it's thought Bundy killed a young girl of 12 shortly after the attacks of the sorority house he was later picked up for driving a vehicle listed as stolen he tried to run but to no avail the cop who arrested him had no idea who he had got in his car apparently on the way to jail Bundy told the cop I wish you had killed me films and documentaries have been made about this maniac and you can even watch interviews of him on YouTube most people think he was a classic sociopath he seemed to fly into rages had a very high view of himself could be very charming and articulate and seemed to have a distinct lack of empathy in one interview Bundy blames not himself but pornography for leading him down a very wrong path he said it was possession that made him want to kill the possession of taking a life and later of keeping the body he would keep some bodies for days assaulting them up until the bodies became putrified all kinds of psychological diagnoses have been made to describe Bundy ranging from psychopathy bipolar disorder multiple personality disorder antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic person disorder but we will let you decide what drove this demon to do the things he did once again we are going to take a walk on the dark side of the human psyche so far we've covered perhaps the most well-known serial killer in Jack the Ripper the most beastly in Ted Bundy and now we are about to enter the realm of perhaps the weirdest savage ever to hold a place in the serial killer Hall of infamy he was the inspiration behind the Hitchcock classic movie psycho as well as the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and to some extent the Silence of the Lambs there hasn't really been any one that shocked the world as much as this guy just asked the cup that discovered his house of horrors the ones that didn't succumb to her nervous breakdown anyway if you haven't heard of him you're in for a surprise so welcome to this episode of the infographic show America's strangest serial killer Ed Gein first of all we should say that mr. Gein was not close to someone like Ted Bundy on the nasty scale nor was he as brutal as Jack the Ripper or as despicable as HH Holmes if anything the man was warped beyond comprehension also known as the butcher of Plainfield gain was no doubt mentally ill to an unfathomable degree so many of you will have heard of the movie psycho it's rather old and most likely older than most of you watching you might have heard of the series the Bates Motel which is based on that movie well the main character in the movie was based on Ed Gein and indeed gain was said to have been brought up in an abusive family with a very oppressive and hyper religious mother he was born on August 27 1906 in a place called La Crosse Wisconsin according to serial killer websites game had a beleaguered childhood having to listen to his mother's frantic preaching regarding sin and lust and the inevitable hell they would lead to it said his childhood was very isolated and he had few friends he had a brother who died in an accident when gain was still young some people have conjectured that gain killed him but there's no proof people have ventured that gain being the shy and weaker brother killed his sibling and this could be compared to the Old Testament thriller Cain and Abel but let's stick with what we know bio tells us at school he rarely socialized although we are told his teachers remembered that he had demonstrated queer mannerisms such as laughing randomly later in life his family moved to a farm and their gain became even more isolated his mother may have been strict but it said gain was obsessed with her he adored her she told him that having relationships with women was a sin and that all other women besides herself were prostitutes and dating them essentially meant being in league with Satan himself this was not a good start for young edy especially if you've read Freud on overbearing mothers Gaines father died and so it was just him and the zealous mother but then she had a stroke and gain ended up having to look after her he took odd jobs around town and was known as a quiet decent guy who was reliable when you wanted something fixed apparently he was quite a capable handyman his devotion to his mother was unerring but it said that gain had become fascinated with stories about Nazis and cannibals which he read in various books and death cult magazines his mother then passed away in 1945 leaving edy alone on the farm it said he kept the rooms where she had stayed in the same condition and locked them so they would stay that way forever he continued working his odd jobs and doing work on the farm but a few years after his mother's death gang took up a new hobby to some extent that hobby was trying to become her now for the gruesome part as we said gain was not a prolific serial killer but what he did do makes up for the low body count in 1957 a woman that worked at a local hardware store went missing her name was Bernice worden her son told police that one of the last people to be seen in the store with her was none other than the habitual hat-wearing mr. game he was arrested shortly after and police received a warrant to check out the game farm this is not one of those serial killer stories with twists and turns because the cops found what they were looking for immediately upon searching the farm that was mrs. wardens dead body shot with a 22 caliber rifle hung upside down in a shed like an animal the torso had been what's called in hunting dressed out meaning it was opened and the organs had been taken out the body was also mutilated from head to toe captain Lloyd show poster who saw this grisly sight said tendons in the ankles had been cut and a rod had been placed through them the body was drawn up in the air by a block and tackle the body was dressed out and the head was missing her head was later found in a burlap sack ed had a thing for heads as you shall see this was obviously a sickening sight for the deputy that found the body but inside the house police got the shock of their lives as we said he liked to keep the heads of his victims police found five heads inside plastic bags as well as four skulls but more stomach-churning they also found masts whereby gain had carefully cut off the faces and kept them intact so he could wear them one police officer told the press some of them have lipstick on and looked perfectly natural if you knew them you'd be able to recognize them in fact Gein was a handyman in many ways and we are not talking about fixing creaking doors police found all sorts of things and not just human remains gained had made lampshades chair covers and waste baskets out of human skin he had human skulls sitting atop bed posts and in the kitchen you could find bowls made from skulls ala psycho he made a skin corset that he could get into and thereby be a woman or more specifically his mother he didn't leave out the bottom half having made leggings out of skin as well as skin socks perhaps his piece de resistance in terms of fashionable items was a belt made from women's nipples he also had a collection of noses and vulvas if Edie wanted he could become a woman by wearing all of this but it wasn't all about dressing up he even had lips he could grab hold of on the end of curtain drawstrings according to one website gang would wear a death mask and the skin closed and then go and dance around in the garden with his costume on we cannot confirm this though it doesn't really matter because gain admitted he liked to wear the suit to become his mother so just the thought of him watching TV and his face mask and skin suit is horrifying enough now gain didn't kill people for all of his handiwork he told police that much of his raw material was gathered by robbing local graves he did however admit to at least one warmer and he was suspected of having killed more women a famous quote of gain was this when I see a pretty girl walking down the street I think two things one part wants to be real nice and sweet and the other part wonders what her head would look like on a stick well some websites and even the movie American Psycho attribute this to gain but other websites tell us it was another strange killer named Edie Kemper that said it such strangeness and brutality left its mark on Plainfield which would never be plain again many people say the sheriff of the town died fairly young as a result of the trauma from investigating this case in fact one of the sheriff's friends said he was a victim of Ed Gein as surely as if he had butchered him gain was unsurprisingly found by the courts to be insane he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and a severe Oedipus complex he died in 1984 from lung cancer in Mendota Mental Health Institute it's thought he said this about his time in one mental institution I like this place everybody treats me nice some of them are a little crazy though he was buried in Plainfield although it said parts of his grave are now missing because people wanted to take a souvenir home with them when they visited the question we will leave you with today is this are we correct in saying this is the world's strangest serial killer let us know your thoughts in the comments what makes a serial killer the worst of his or her kind well it's probably a few things such as the body count but for most people it would more likely be the nature of the killing the UK's Harold Shipman aka dr. death may have killed well over 200 people but you could say his modus operandi wasn't as depraved as some killers Richard Ramirez the American Satanist got up close and personal to his victims and did all manner of horrific things to them Albert Fish tortured mutilated killed and eight children and he was subsequently called a psychiatric phenomenon the list goes on and the total depravity of killers can chill your spine today we are going to feature one person who often receives the superlative of worst in this episode of the infographic show HH Holmes is he the worst serial killer in US history where do we start well what about the fairly recent revelations that the killer who was the focus of today's show may have been none other than Jack the Ripper it's an outside chance and no indisputable evidence has been seen but the great-great-grandson of Herman Webster Mudgett AKA HH holmes AKA the devil in the white city came forward in 2017 and said he had evidence that proved his deceased relative was london's infamous Ripper a great great grandson Jeff Mudgett believes Holmes was never actually executed having found a way out of it after employing his well-known trickery he also claims that Holmes's Diaries which he is now the owner of described viciously mutilating and murdering prostitutes in London put the man set to be America's for a serial killer be much worse than we thought this is very likely not the case because in 2017 his body was exhumed and was found to be largely preserved too due to the fact that Holmes got his wish and was buried in a coffin filled with concrete a DNA test was performed and indeed it revealed that the preserved body was that of HH Holmes so what about HH Holmes why is he said to be one of the worst if not the worst in history what exactly did he do to get that epithet first of all we don't know how many people he killed he confessed to 27 murders but police have only ever been sure about nine of his murders some people believe that he may have killed in the region of 200 people but that is very questionable it isn't how many people he killed however as we say dr. Shipman is never regarded as the worst killer but the manner in which he supposedly killed people he was said to be a sadist a fellow with a brutal propensity for watching people suffer and feel pain and he would do this when they were locked inside one of his torture rooms but let's start from the beginning he was born in New Hampshire on May 16th 1861 and his childhood has been written about extensively did he torture animals as many serial killers have been set to do or was his childhood fairly normal he is said to have admitted himself I was born with the very devil in me the inclination to murder came to me as naturally as the inspiration to do right comes to the majority of persons his early life fits the pattern of regular folks he graduated high school got married had a kid went to university he then dropped out of one University and later went to another from which he graduated if anything does point to his wicked ways it's that he studied human dissection and as a young man was said to be violent towards his wife but then things got out of hand he started to move from city to city and on at least two occasions was linked to the murders of young boys one boy disappeared after allegedly being seen with Holmes and another died after taking drugs from the pharmacy where Holmes worked he certainly liked to keep moving which could be the reason why most accounts of his life state that before he finally arrived in Chicago he had become a big-time fraudster notably it said his cons involved insurance with one biography saying Holmes was stealing and mutilating medical cadavers and pretending they were victims of accidents to collect money as for the dead children police never linked them to Holmes it's only in retrospect that we might wonder if he had anything to do with them in Chicago though that's where the ghastly stuff really took place when Holmes created his sick piece there is a stones that became known as his murder Castle this was a three-story building on Chicago's 63rd and Wallace streets a huge place it took up an entire block he called it the world's fair hotel built for the upcoming World's Columbian Exposition but it never really became a proper hotel Holmes had all manner of problems with suppliers and was accused of possible insurance fraud when part of it burned down it was always a shady project only because Holmes seemed to have a difficult relationship with anyone involved with it in 1937 long after Holmes's arrest the Chicago Tribune described the place as queer stating it had chimneys stuck out where chimneys should never stick out its stairways ended nowhere in particular winding passages brought the uninitiated with a frightful jerk back to where they had started from it called it mysterious and crooked as distorted as the killer's mind with rooms with no doors and doors with no rooms the stuff of nightmares the thing with the house is that Holmes was the only person who knew how it actually worked it was kind of a maze a house of horrors that made no sense to other people it was to this mad place that he invited mainly young women to stay some say it's hard to tell exactly what he did though or who he killed only because the man who was married to three people at liked to tell a lot of lies benjamin pitezel was a friend of holmes and also an accomplice in some of his crimes but Ezell had agreed with holmes to do a scam whereby Patel's death would be faked and they would share a ten thousand dollar life insurance payment however holmes never got a cadaver which he would say was his friends rather he knocked his friend out with chloroform and then set him on fire Holmes later said he murdered three out of five of Petty Souls children two of their bodies were found buried in the hotel Holmes is also said to have murdered his mistress Julia Smith as well as her daughter pearl no one knows exactly what happened to them but they went missing while staying at the hotel this was not the first young woman who'd fallen for Holmes who would die when staying with him with several young women said to be his victims one of the reasons why Holmes is so notorious is because of the stories that surfaced about his home being a massive torture chamber some skeptics though have said that this has been greatly exaggerated these supposed exaggerations tell us that some of the rooms would have instruments of torture hidden in the walls such as blow torches tools for tearing apart bodies hidden poison and corrosive acid it's said there was a hanging room a torture rack and that there were gas chambers a quicklime pit and also that the walls were ironclad to prevent people from escaping once they died there were shoots from which the bodies could easily be disposed but at the time newspapers were well known for their exaggeration and later others said perhaps Holmes was not as bad as first thought in the gem of the prairie and informal history of the Chicago underworld by Herbert Ashbury he writes that perhaps Holmes wasn't quite the sadistic torture others had said he was maybe even his house of horrors was less of a trap made by a demented man than it was a badly built hotel we can find many websites that write sensational stories about him but more serious journalism is skeptical about his deeds some people even doubt he said I was born with the very devil in me in fact it was later revealed that he was said to have a hanging room only because police found a rope and that he chopped his victims up only because they found knives in a worn-out table mr. Holmes was no doubt a - the character a heartless scammer and a cruel murderer and thief but as for the rest of the story maybe just maybe there has been some embellishments if you've read or watched interviews with serial killers most of them either come across a slightly deranged or at least very creepy but the focus of today's show we must admit seems kind of likable in the interviews watch the one in 1994 where Jeff tells all while sat next to his loving father my childhood wasn't filled with any great tragedies he told the interviewer but then explained his predilection for dissecting dogs and cats as a kid it could have led to a normal hobby like taxidermy he added but it didn't and soft-spoken Jeff turned his efforts towards killing and taking apart human beings in an unimaginable fashion I acted on my fantasies and that's where everything went wrong he said today we'll see how wrong it went in this episode of the infographic show the story of Jeffrey Dahmer the Milwaukee monster if you've seen the recent movie about our killer called my friend Dahmer you'll see he is portrayed as a bit of a loner in school with some strange habits he has few friends but he doesn't seem to have violent impulses you'd probably not even notice him if you went to the same school the movie was based on a graphic novel by the same name written by turf back turf he researched Dahmer and this is what he had to say there are a surprising number out there who viewed Jeffrey Dahmer as some kind of antihero a bullied kid who lashed back at the society that rejected him this is nonsense Dahmer was a twisted wretch whose depravity was almost beyond comprehension so how did this Playa boy become a twisted serial killer well as you already know Dahmer had a penchant for dissecting animals that he found on the road after dissection he would often dissolve the bodies in a barrel of chemicals this was at his family home in Ohio Dahmer has called this time of his life intense stating that his mother was often frantic and his dad always busy he got little attention at home and this seems to have been a catalyst to his problems psychologists might say Jeff grew up with a dis Fork family which kind of means a family mess it said at one point the young Dahmer had even tried to take his own life he had a few buddies and they would later tell the authorities media and book writers about how Jeff would find and small animals and dissect em dahmer has admitted that he wanted to see how they fitted together his dad said as a kid his son fell in love with bones he loved hearing the sound they made and spent much of his time looking for them yep perhaps the busy father should have looked into this morbid fascination with dead bodies and their different parts the writing was on the wall but it said his dad who was an analytical chemist just thought Jeff had a curious mind as all scientists should but despite all his weirdness he played tennis regularly and was in the school band for a while he also turned up to school sometimes thinking of booze he was a bit of a class clown sometimes acting out seizures or pretending he had cerebral palsy this became known as doing a Dahmer this was when he was in his early teens it's then that the real trouble started Jeff realized that he was gay sometime around the age of 14 due to the prevailing culture at the time he had to keep that secret he would sometimes watch a male jogger running down the road while he was hidden in the bushes he fantasized about this guy but he wasn't thinking about candlelit dinners and nights in front of the TV watching happy days no young Jeff jumped the shark so to speak and imagine somehow making this runner unconscious and then having sex with the lifeless body he even once planned to actually go through with it waiting in the bushes armed with a baseball bat but the jogger didn't run that day at age 17 with his parents still screaming at each other continually his grades going downhill and his drinking getting worse Dahmer was at the height of his unhappiness he did graduate though right at the time his parents divorced it's right after graduation a matter of a few weeks that Dahmer graduated from dissecting animals to dissecting humans at age 18 he picked up a guy Stephen Mark Hicks who was hitchhiking to a place called Lockwood Corners Ohio to see a concert he was 18 the same age as Jeff so it doesn't seem out of the ordinary that this young guy would agree to go back to Dahmer's pad and do some drinking only Jeff wasn't too happy when the guy called his own Bell and said he should go no Jeff didn't like that at all he knocked a kid out with a dumbbell and then finished him off by strangling him with the bar of the dumbbell he then masturbated over the corpse when that was done he chopped up the body and put various parts in bags and buried them later he would dig up the arts and sliced the flesh from the bones he then crushed those bones and scattered what was left in woodland like one would scatter the ashes of someone they loved that was Jeff's first murder and as we say it's hard to believe the man in the interviews could sit in his house pairing flesh from bones from that date in 1978 until he was arrested in 1991 he would kill 17 people so we can't detail every murder what we will say is that Dahmer has few equals in the milieu of the total depravity he didn't kill for a while as he enlisted in the army that lasted from 1978 to 1981 as he was kicked out for his heavy drinking at the time the army didn't know or chose not to believe that Jeff was a rapist he worked in the medic unit with a guy of similar age named Preston Davis Davis police Dahmer drugged him and raped him he later told the press I was raped by Jeffrey I am just thankful to be alive to tell the story he was replaced by a 17 year old named Billy Joe Capshaw who bunked with Dahmer Capshaw later told the press that Dahmer tied him up and raped him several times I was there for another 17 months with Jeff being raped and tortured Capshaw said he had even used a rape kit to prove it to his officers but it seems the army didn't believe him once Dahmer is out of the army what does he do next during the years until his next murder you could say he was still active regarding his devotion to being evil he drugged young men and then had sex with their unconscious bodies it's thought he did this around a dozen times he also fantasized about digging up dead bodies and doing things to them this of course was not convenient and so Jeff was about to start making his own dead bodies he waited until 1987 and then killed and dismembered another young man while living with his grandmother again he masturbated over the corpse he took it a step further though Dahmer always said that he didn't mean to kill the first of those victims at his Grant's place and he just woke up with a bloody dead man in his bed nonetheless he didn't exactly get on the phone to the cops and frantically explain that there'd been a terrible accident on the contrary he chopped up the body put the parts in a suitcase and then boiled the flesh from the severed head in chemicals when he had a shiny skull at the end of his cooking he used that as a masturbation tool after a while he crushed and scattered the bits while staying with his grandmother he killed again employing a similar modus operandi of drugging strangling having some kind of intercourse with the corpse dismembering the body and keeping the skull after boiling one lucky guy he brought home didn't get killed only because his gran discovered that Jeff had company that evening his grandmother quickly threw him out because he was a drunk and because he brought young men home late at night and because for some reason she smelled something foul emanating from Jeff's room as you can imagine when living in his own place things got worse he was actually arrested and later charged for drugging and sexually molesting a 13 year old and then arrested on a similar charge again but prior to being sentenced he killed again this time he found a very handsome chap who was a male model he met him at a gay bar and even though Dahmer said he had not intended to kill that night he felt he didn't have much choice as the model came and flirted with him again after fleeing the dead body and smashing up the bones Dahmer got rid of what was left only this time he kept the genitals and head fully preserving them in acetone he said he did this just because the guy was so good-looking in 1989 he got five years probation for his sexual offence with children this is when he went on a bit of a killing spree almost always drugging young guys and making his unique kind of love to the corpse then fleeing the bodies or dissolving the parts in acid and sometimes keeping the skulls he was building a skull collection something that cops would later find to their horror he branched out to in terms of what he did to the bodies sometimes he would take photos of himself with the dead you can see them online and sometimes he would just keep the heads for a while and chat with them and kiss them he would also take photos sometimes at each stage of the dismembered in process but perhaps the pinnacle of Dahmer's weirdness was when after drugging one young man he decided not to kill him outright but to drill a hole through his skull pour in warm water and so render the victim in a vegetative state then he can have a kind of living slate Dahmer would always say later that all he wanted was company and for the men not to leave however his victim woke up and was not exactly veget eyes saying to Dahmer I have headache what time is it apparently it was time to die as Dahmer gave him more spiked drink and strangled the man he tried this again with a 14 year old only this time injecting hydrochloric acid into the young boy's skull the frontal lobe to be exact he then took the semi-conscious boy to his bedroom where his previous victim's body was still laying it said the boy saw the corpse but was too messed up to do anything Dahmer left the boy alone at one point to go get some more beers only to find out his return that the kid was out in the street talking to three women they noticed the boy was bleeding from his backside and that he was in a bad way but when a cop turned up Dahmer said the kid was his boyfriend the cop didn't even think to investigate unbelievably despite the woman's protests the cop told Dahmer to wrap the kid up and take him back home that he dutifully did and injected the kid's brain again with more acid this time he died Dahmer kept the skull and added it to his skull collection he killed again and again and not surprisingly the neighbors complained of a stink and also noise pollution saying that some dude uses a chainsaw at night indoors Dahmer had so many body parts and sometimes he would leave the fresh dead around so long he got a maggot infestation with one body he tried keeping it for weeks and water and salt so he could keep it fully intact but that didn't work it should be known that Jeff kept cuts of human flesh and organs in the fridge so he could eat them later there's even a story in the media about one of his neighbors who to this day thinks the meat sandwich Dahmer gave her could have been human meat Dahmer finally met his match with a man called Tracy Edwards whom Dahmer almost killed but the sensible Edwards who was 32 at the time knew what was coming he assured Dahmer he wasn't going to leave him even though Dahmer had picked up a knife used handcuffs on him on only one hand and Edwards knew what the foul smell was and what the steel drum had been used for he stayed with Dahmer five hours with a swinging handcuff as Dahmer occasionally held a knife to him and even said he was going to eat his heart when he got his chance Edwards punched Dahmer and ran for it he told cops what had happened and what he had seen and two cops went to Dahmer's place there they found the Polaroids with an astonished cop telling his partner that they were certainly not fates Dahmer tried to fight but was held down where on a search was performed and a fresh head with flesh was quickly found Dahmer then told the stun cops for what I did I should be dead investigator searching the house later found Hart's other organs hands penises bits of tissue and entire torso skeletons and of course skulls for his handiwork he got 15 consecutive life terms in prison he admitted everything and every detail some say so he would get away with being insane that didn't happen psychiatrist said he was sadistic and had antisocial personality disorder but he was sane they also said he was amiable charming and amusing to chat with inside prison he read a lot of books and turned to religion and even though he'd been separated from the general population he persuaded the authorities to move him with the others that was Dahmer's downfall as he was murdered by fellow inmate and fellow murderer Christopher's Carver with a metal bar from the weight room scar veut killed another guy to Dahmer's killer later told the press that he wasn't happy about what Dahmer had done but was also bugged out that Dahmer would make what looked like several body parts from the prison food as a way to piss off other prisoners it's even said he added ketchup to his macabre art to imitate blood we'll leave you with the Dahmer quote the killing was a means to an end that was the least satisfactory part I didn't enjoy doing that that's why I tried to create living zombies with uric acid in the drill but it never worked no the killing was not the objective I just wanted to have the person under my complete control not having to consider their wishes being able to keep them there as long as I wanted this was a long show but we think the crazy story of Dahmer deserves it countless plays books films TV shows and documentaries have been made about this man the focus of today's show takes his place in the serial killer Hall of infamy mostly for one reason his death count this man murdered many make no mistake about it though if we counted nasty dictators such as Adolf Hitler Joseph Stalin Pol Pot or the champion of body counts Mao Zedong his number doesn't look too high but they didn't cause the deaths of millions with their own hands then you've got professional executioner's such as the Russian born Vassili Michael ovitch Blokhin who executed tens of thousands in the early 20th century and that was with his own hands still we don't often class executioner's as serial killers today we'll focus on one of the most prolific killers in the hands-on Department and certainly the busiest serial killer of all time in the USA in this episode of the infographic show Charles Edmonds Colin the angel of death before we get into the who what where when and how of this serial killer let's have a quick look at the people that owned the spots on the world's most prolific serial killer in history list we should add the disclaimer that the exact number of deaths is not always certain often put in the top five is a former British doctor named Harold Shipman aka dr. death it's thought that between 1975 and 1998 he killed somewhere between 200 and 250 people with injections of diamorphine which is the same as heroin then you've got a triumvirate of Colombians there's Daniel Camargo who in the 70s and 80s raped and killed around 180 women and children he took the mantle from Pedro Lopez aka the monster of the Andes who in the 60s and 70s is said to have murdered more than 350 young girls it's thought he's wandering around Colombia or Peru today after being released from prison in 1998 then you have the child killer torturer and rapist Luis Garavito aka the Beast who killed just as many people in Colombia and nearby nations in the 90s after these guys there are many serial killers around the world with a 50 to 100 person body count we will also give a special mention to Elizabeth báthory a Hungarian woman who had said killed around 650 people in the 16th century according to reports she brutally tortured and killed mainly children in her Transylvanian castle and sometimes bathe in their blood hence her nickname the blood countess this is no myth although the story could have been slightly exaggerated over time over 300 people testified about her wicked deeds and a large number of skeletons and body parts were found around her castle during the investigation so what about our man mr. Colin well while there might be only around 30 confirmed murders many people familiar with the case say that Colin possibly killed over 400 people which would put him ahead of the others we just mentioned you could say though that he wasn't as brutal as someone who swiped soon to be tortured and killed kids from the street but we'll leave that for you to decide we say this because like dr. death he killed his victims by administering already sick hospitalized patients with an overdose of drugs he could do this because he worked as a nurse now let's have a look at what may have caused this killer to act so violently he was born on February 22nd 1960 and was the youngest of eight children he grew up in West Orange New Jersey where he has said he had a terrible childhood filled with unhappiness he has stated that even as a nine-year-old kid he tried to kill himself by making a dangerous drink from chemicals in his chemistry set in a statement after his arrest he talked about this suicide attempt you know maybe if I was nine years old and would have had to die that day all these lives including my family wouldn't be affected in this way why did he do this well some sources tell us Cullen was raped as a young kid by his father but that seems unlikely as his dad died when he was just seven months old this is probably not reliable information the more reliable New York Times said in 2003 that details of Cullen's background are sketchy but it's certain that he did try to commit suicide at various points in his life they were up to 20 attempts some media tell us due to his depression and lack of self-worth in interviews after his arrest neighbors said he was socially awkward and strange BIOS tell us he had few friends and being skinny and awkward he was bullied he spent a lot of time alone but had a good enough brain to understand the books of Fyodor Dostoevsky which he was reportedly fascinated by we might remember that the protagonist in the novel Crime and Punishment kills and at times tries to justify other blogs not as reliable as big news media told us two of Cullen's siblings died during childhood all in all you have a poor family and a lot of tragedy we know that the family lived in poverty with just their mom who relied on welfare payments like many serial killers Collins family was hyper religious they were Catholic so perhaps Cullen was full of what's sometimes called Catholic guilt we know from his sister that the mother died in a car accident while Collin was in high school and this is said to be a reason why he didn't complete school we also know that he joined the US Navy and served between 1978 and 1984 where he worked on the ballistic missile submarine called the USS Woodrow Wilson this is where we have the first signs of him being not a regular guy like in school he was considered a misfit by the other officers Cullen was the target of relentless bullying during his time on the nuclear submarine and did not last long on his first assignment said one news report not only was he deemed strange but he was found one time to have stolen a hospital gown and mask from the medical area and then was seen wearing them while sitting at the missile control panel on the submarine he was reassigned but during the next few years in the Navy he tried to commit suicide on more than one occasion this led to him being discharged the young man straight out of the Navy went to study nursing at mountainside School of Nursing in New Jersey he landed his first nursing job at st. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston New Jersey in 1987 he also got married that year with a woman he would have two daughters with was life getting better for Cullen it seems not as he never lasted that long at any one Hospital over his 16-year career he worked in ten hospitals his marriage lasted not much longer than one year and he lived in a small apartment by himself he was also cruel to his pet dog leaving it tied up outside all day even in the winter the dog was rescued eventually by an animal protection agency he never had much money either and the police were once called after it was discovered Cullen had been burning things inside his house to heat the place up no wife no money no happiness Cullen it seems then began taking his sadness out on others we should also add that he was arrested at one point for stalking a female colleague at the hospital on one occasion he broke into her house while she was sleeping after this arrest he tried to commit suicide yet again and had to take two months of work it said at the many hospitals where he worked he would try and choose the graveyard shifts in the intensive care units here he was left alone and many of the patients in his care were in a very bad way not only would it be plausible if they died but they couldn't communicate with him or call for help he often had the run of the ward and also had a number of prescription drugs that he could administer to his victims patients were dying and it was unusual but the hospitals couldn't figure out what was going on it seems Cullen was under suspicion though but it seems more for being careless than actually intentionally killing people he lost jobs for giving patients drugs at the wrong times and another time for stealing drugs but no one ever put two and two together and linked him to the mysteriously dying patients even though he lost a lot of jobs is thought he was not banned from the profession of Nursing partly because at the time there was a huge shortage of nurses there would be more suicide attempts and even some love interest in his life but he kept on killing while he worked at Somerset Medical Center in New Jersey in 2003 he killed at least eight people until it was found that this strange nurse had been accessing patient data of people he wasn't assigned to he was also taking drugs from the pharmacy that his pay hadn't been prescribed and visiting rooms that contained patients not assigned to him before he was arrested and just before his final victim that he overdosed on insulin Cullen killed at least five more patients authorities finally did add two and two together and Cullen was put under surveillance he was arrested on December 12 2003 and charged with murder he soon told the cops he'd been killing for years at several hospitals but it's thought he never gave the correct number regarding his victims he told police he had killed him so they wouldn't suffer anymore while many of the patients he killed were in great pain and were terminal cases many others were on the mend he also told police that during the murders he was in a kind of blackout and so he couldn't recall all the people he had murdered in 2006 he got 127 years in prison which was 18 consecutive life sentences he is currently serving that a New Jersey state prison if there's any image you can find on the Internet of a serial killer that will give you the creeps it's John Wayne Gacy in his clown suit many people already have an irrational fear of clowns known as coulrophobia but after you watch today's episode the fear might start to sound totally rational this stubby overweight guy who looks kind of feeble yet menacing in interviews could be chosen by any casting director to play the lonely pedophile in a Hollywood film and that's partly what Gacy did he raped and killed children and young men that is when he wasn't making them laugh as part of his charity clown gig yes this is truly the neighborhood boogeyman welcome to this episode of the infographic show John Wayne Gacy the killer clown Gacy was born on March 17th 1942 in Chicago Illinois he had two sisters a father of Polish descent and a mother of British descent his childhood was not picture perfect by any means his dad a World War one veteran was said to be a heavy drinker and once drunk would often visit physical violence upon his son it said in some BIOS that he would belittle the young Gacy telling him he would never amount to anything while the sisters and mother didn't escape this violence it said Gacy took the brunt of it once being hit so hard with a broomstick he fell unconscious we should add that after gay C's arrests in interviews he would always say that he never hated his father it said that his mother doted on her who she called Johnny and tried to keep him out of arms reach from the abusive dad for this it said the father warned he would grow up to be what he called a sissy though it's not entirely confirmed some sources say he was sexually molested himself as a 9 year old boy what we can say is like many serial killers he didn't have the best of upbringings school life wasn't any better where he was bullied for being fat and lacking in confidence it said he moved from school to school and never actually graduated although later in life his IQ was set to be higher than average at 118 his dropping out of school was partly because he was a very sickly child missing lots of school for years he was said to have a heart condition but also some kind of mystery illness that would occasionally bring on seizures and blackouts the ever loving father didn't believe any of it saying his son was just looking for attention nonetheless he kind of weathered the storm of a bad upbringing and at age 18 got a job working for a local Democratic Party candidate it seems another major torment was visited on him when his father bought him a car a car and his father's name that he only allowed his son to use if he did what he said if that didn't happen he'd take out parts of the car in terms of when strangeness really manifested that was during his three-month stint working as a mortuary assistant in Las Vegas and interviews Gacy said that he would sleep in the embalming room one day he said he got into a coffin with a dead teenage boy and hugged the cadaver until a feeling of almighty disgust took over him Gacy was 20 at this point and for many years he was aware that he was a homosexual this was possibly the first time he had acted on his sexual desires and perhaps such discreteness was partly due to all those years of being called a sissy by the sadistic head of his family KC seems to have shrugged off morbidity for a while going back to Illinois to study business at Northwest Business College he then got married and moved to Waterloo Iowa the lady was named Marilyn Meyers and both became upstanding members of the community the New York Times writes in 1979 after his arrest that Gacy was an affable driven businessman a hard-working outgoing community spirited man next-door his own sister was also interviewed in that story saying what a shock it was that her brother was in some respects a living he is just a normal person she said my mother just can't believe it all she does is cry anyway the married couple worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises in Waterloo that Casey's wife's family had bought Casey even got the sobriquet kernel from some of his friends as he was always giving away Fried Chicken he got involved in all kinds of community work and at one point was the vice president of the local United States Junior Chamber also known as JC's he raised funds and was admired by the community musicians Sufjan Stevens years later would write a song about him on his album Illinois with the lyrics and the first verse going the neighbors they adored him for his humor and his conversation he and his wife had two sons and for a time he really did seem to have the picture-perfect life it said even his master tormentor the father said sorry for the way he had treated him as a kid you can just imagine it white picket fence barbecues flags in the garden tree-lined streets sweet American suburbia except we all know that no such thing exists and the American Dream always has a corresponding nightmare Casey drank heavily took drugs visited prostitutes and made sexual advances on young male employees who just wanted to serve finger-licking good buckets of dead bird and clock out at the end of a shift this culminated in 1967 when Casey sexually abused a 15 year old boy who he had lured to his a basement to ostensibly watch pornography the kid was the son of one of Casey's fellow JC members the 25 year old Gacy would lure many young boys to that basement in the ensuing months often giving them lots of alcohol and then sexually abusing them it said he even gave a few boys 50 bucks saying the money was part of serious scientific research that he was conducting on homosexuality one of the boys complained and then another and Gacy was charged with oral sodomy he denied this and many of his community friends got behind him it was an outrage prior to the trial had said Gacy paid an 18 year-old boy to spray mace into the young victims eyes and warned him not to testify but the boys still testified Casey was charged with that crime - in 1968 the white picket fence went up in flames so to speak and Gacy was sentenced to 10 years he was also diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder his wife filed for divorce and Gacy would not see her or his two kids ever again I just couldn't believe it she said in an interview many years later I never had any fear of him it's hard for me to relate to these killings I was never afraid of him he was an upstanding prisoner becoming head chef completing high school even helping to improve conditions for other prisoners his father died during his time in prison not surprisingly from alcohol-related liver disease Cayce served only 18 months of a decade-long sentence and then was allowed out on probation on the condition he go back to Chicago and not stay out later than 10:00 p.m. in an interview KC's father-in-law later said I can't understand why they would have let him out of prison in Iowa he had a very good point Casey started his own business back in Chicago called PDM contractors the initial standing for painting decorating and maintenance it was successful but Gacy seemed inclined to hire young men to work for him later two of those men would be found buried under his house while many other employees would later say Gacy made sexual advances towards them police even had an eye on him knowing that young men and boys as young as nine were often visiting the Gacy household they even investigated him when boys mostly working on the streets went missing but there was nothing they could link to gay see another young man told police Gacy had chloroformed and raped him and that charge was still standing when Gacy was finally charged in 1972 Gacy married again to a woman who later told the press that he had swept her off her feet she divorced him in 76 after an argument over young men's wallets she had found in his car another man went missing and police knew he had worked for Gacy for one summer they were on to him and soon started digging literally under his house there they found 27 decomposed bodies five more young men were said to have been dumped in the desplaines River he was a kind friendly and generous neighbor a former Gacy neighbor told the media we were close neighbors our house was open to him and his was open to us I still can't believe how John could have done that this makes sense considering Gacy was the neighborhood clown going by the nickname público or patches he joined local clubs attended all kinds of charity events visited sick kids and hospitals attended Democratic Party functions often dressed as this clown his friends would even call him the jolly Joker all the time this Joker was looking for young male victims preying on them and luring them back to his house often he would handcuff them sometimes torture them and then either strangle them or stab them to death what's really gruesome is that many victims would willingly put on the handcuffs as clown Gacy told them it was part of an exciting escape trick once cuffed they would be beaten and become his sexual slave and then Gacy would perform what he called the rope trick which was slowly strangling the victims with the tourniquet after a long investigation in subsequent arrests Gacy finally admitted to police that he had been the judge jury and executioner of many many people he said he had killed between 25 and 30 young men trying to mitigate his actions by saying they were all Runaways or prostitutes he even said he sometimes had nights when he would do doubles meaning he'd killed two boys in one night he would talk about the smell of putrified flesh explain his modus operandi but in court he would enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity that didn't work even though psychiatric experts for the defense said he was a paranoid schizophrenic he was sentenced to death in 1980 for 12 counts of murder he spent 14 years on death row at the Menard Correctional Center in Illinois and as you may have seen on YouTube he did a few interviews he even painted and sold some of his work some of those works were him as a clown paintings Gacy said that were done to give joy to people he appealed his sentence was stabbed once by an inmate but was executed on May 9th 1994 for his last meal he had Kentucky Fried Chicken shrimp fries strawberries for dessert and some diet coke to swill it all down of course one must watch ones weight minutes before one receives a lethal injection even that didn't go well and took 18 minutes those watching were not allowed to see him wriggle and squirm as the blinds were drawn for a while it said the last
