the side of the stage this afternoon i would like to welcome and recognize for their continued support first our superintendent mrs janelle keating hambly deputy superintendent dr scott harrison and our distinguished board of directors mrs denise vogel mrs cassie pearson mr matt scheer mr mike jansen and mrs karen bunker i i am cody mothershed and i am proud to be the principal at white river high school and such dedicated and resilient students as those sitting here today i would now like to introduce mrs shadron to share a few words for our seniors please welcome mrs shadran to share one final message with our seniors hello everybody i want to first say thank you to the parents and families of these phenomenal students the amount of pride you are feeling must seem overwhelming at the moment when i look out into the crowd i see many faces of friends colleagues teachers of my own children and even family the community is truly full of just the best people students i know some of you are ready to leave months ago and some of you still do not believe that this is real finally earning your diploma and sitting here in your cap and gowns is the culmination of one of the hardest years fathomable what you all have achieved given the uncertainty of these times is mind-boggling and you have handled it with more maturity and wherewithal than many adults i know never in a million years could we have prepared for the twists and turns of the 2021 school year and i hope celebrating this milestone provides you with an immense sense of accomplishment as it should this was not the year we had planned on but the limitation imposed do not define you when mr mothership approached me about being the staff speaker today a million different thoughts ran through my head but i couldn't get yes out fast enough there was approximately a zero percent chance i wouldn't be here with you all today you see i'm not the traditional teacher and i'm definitely not the most experienced this was not my first career choice for that matter but when i was trying to write the speech today the concept of narrowing down all the adjectives and memories that go along with the class of 2021 seemed almost an insurmountable task do i write about what you want to hear what is expected to be said but what i couldn't shake was a feeling hold on what some of you may not know is i met these amazing kiddos as bright-eyed freshman my first year here at white river high school we were all newbies together excited for what the future holds but wednesday the class of 2021 walked out of white river high school one last time and i was met with an emotion i hadn't quite prepared for and that was panic you see from the start of our kindergarten years we have been taught to plan we have been taught to prioritize what is to come what needs to be done and to make sure everything is just so it becomes a checklist for us to dredge through just to get to the end but what i suddenly realized that wednesday afternoon was that i had not prepared for the class of 2021 to actually leave nor was i ready and i was met with a heavy dose of reality that i had never been at white river high school without all of you here and i had not planned enough for your departure but what came next was the reality of all the other things that hadn't gone quite according to plan i never had planned to be a teacher in the first place i never planned on having a wheelie chair zone our calculator dents in my whiteboard or box fans falling out of my classroom window and i definitely never planned on all of those balls bouncing across my concrete floor i never planned on the sound of animal noises coming from the back room woodpeckers on my roof are hearing all those beautiful voices singing from our stairwells i had not planned on fighting side by side with you all to make sure that this school was a place for everyone to have a safe education and i definitely had never planned on teaching that darling little blonde haired girl who lived right next door thank goodness things had never gone according to my plan never ended my to-do list had there been a checklist to be here with you all today but i am sure glad that i am and it is to say that this is an honor is a complete understatement you have made me a better person and you will leave an indelible mark on my heart but i want to leave you all with a few pieces of advice it's no secret that this class has had record scholarships numerous prestigious universities apprenticeships some of you are going to service our country and some of you are graduating with trade programs your success has never been a question you have all marked off many traditional boxes and you should be extremely proud of yourself but on your to-do list i want you to make a couple more boxes allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them there is failure in learning just as much as the victory and you never know what will happen if you don't try don't forget to remind yourself of just how incredibly special you all are and do not let anyone ever tell you differently you are valued you are enough and you are all perfection make a box to remember that when a door closes another really does open and sometimes no just means not quite yet keep trying and fighting and you will never know what might come plan to feed that fire that burns inside you and never let it leave your heart and never let it burn out be unapologetically determined and passionate about your choices you will go through many stages of life including careers parenthood travel but don't don't you ever lose sight of what makes you you remember that the only thing that will never change is change itself roll with the punches and learn to adapt welcome what what may seem out of your comfort zone at first recognize that at times you may need to ask for help and then go ask for it my dad once always said a closed mouth doesn't get fed and it's true ask for what you need yet set clear expectations don't forget to go out to nature put those phones down for a second and realize the true beauty that we truly live in okay embrace all education as it is the only thing nobody will ever be able to take away from you learn to question things just enough and you will know then the true power of education plan to invest but invest in yourself and invest in the things that cannot be replaced wealth is more than just a monetary value in the earlier you figure this out the earlier you will realize that happiness is not the end goal but it truly is in your process [Music] do all of this in addition to your current check boxes that you have set for yourself and then go live your life according to that plan i leave you all with the deepest sense of pride and love and i think i could speak for all of white river school district when i say you set the bar for future generations class of 2021 you may not have been my plan but thank goodness you were here because you were exactly what i needed to fill my heart blessings thank you and most importantly we all plan on enjoying the wonderful contributions to the community you will provide congratulations distinct characteristics strength compassion and talent we've strengthened ourselves from all we have learned throughout high school the wonders we've learned in that building they've changed us made and most importantly each other we have strengthened through academics we have strengthened through adversities and we've strengthened through crises we've taught each other how to be resilient and to lift each other up when we struggle we've championed new challenges and responsibilities with such grace it should have been no surprise to anyone that our senior class was able to overcome high school obstacles especially this past year high school is not easy on anyone let alone adding pandemic in the middle of it the class of 2021 is full of the most compassionate people you will ever meet the relationships and connections our class has made has impacted each and every one of us not only has this taught us how to create deep and meaningful relationships in our professional and personal lives but it's taught us how to be good people people overlook kindness in our society and it is our job to make kindness normal and not only only our own lives but those around us kindness and respect will not only help our journeys but impact everyone we interact with the respect this class demonstrates not only towards each other but towards teachers administration and anyone that crosses our path is unmatched let us all remember the true importance of kindness and how it impacts so many and 20 years from now when we all gather together again for our reunion we will greet each other with the same enthusiasm and warm hardened heartedness that all of us show now it amazes me when i look at this group as a whole and see all the incredible and vastly different talents on this field
