recently I hiked into a remote Canyon in the American southwest on a mission to find treasure that was buried somewhere within its depths through extensive research leading up to this trip I knew that something of incredible value and thousands of years old was waiting to be discovered here the only problem is to get there I had to backpack for multiple days through a strange and treacherous landscape filled with obstacles and worst of all extremely slippery surfaces finally when I arrived at the very end completely exhausted I uncovered what was buried here and left this place a far richer man all right good evening Sun's about to set but we are getting a head start today or tomorrow I should say we are going somewhere to find buried treasure that's right you heard me right and it'll all makes sense in a little bit so we just stumbled across this huge Al coov and a huge pictograph there's two different colors of dyes in play here the red is much better preserved and then the middle figure created with that white pigment which doesn't last as long and then there's another horn figure over here so look at that Chunk on the left arm of this figure you can see how thick that pigment used to be looks like there's more characters right here these all faded away and directly underneath them and there's a ton of scattered rocks all over the place and sort of piles and it really kind of makes you wonder that is a perfect little example of a Grainery held up high off the ground and right where they would have lived right next to a water source and protected from all the elements by this Big Al Cove for d this is tumble weed tumble weed is actually invasive to United States it comes originally from the Eurasia Russia area I don't think a lot of people know that [Music] w [Music] homy hommy R Grand up [Music] there are so many tadpoles so this is what we're doing for 2 hours oh [Music] this way go way buddy [Applause] for all right there's a huge pool of water up ahead our strategy is to float my backpack using its rain cover across the pool will it float will it float oh come on let's go I'm sorry buddy you're a good boy there you go no it works it's really cold this has been a very very tough but beautiful hike what are you doing quick side quest woo that's a big one hold me [Music] Jack wow this is is insanely dense and slow goinging but I guess that's what you got to go through to find buried treasure you know you're not going to find it right on the beaten path if you know what I mean [Applause] all right look at these lines on the wall this tells us that we are getting very close that is bizarre feels like there's like wind coming out of that hole what in the world check out this View [Applause] what is this that is a deep hole I can't get to it just too scker [Applause] [Applause] boom my goodness this is a lot of work wow this is this is ridiculous this is ridiculous this is ridiculous oh my God [Applause] [Applause] all right I think we're getting close we are approaching the buried treasure this is it oh my gosh I can't believe we found it here it is America's greatest buried treasure that Canyon and 193 others like it buried under hundreds of feet of water the treasure was what we were just hiking in that beautiful Canyon filled with so much life and scenery and biodiversity that was a small fraction of what this whole place used to look like come on two [Applause] go that white line represents the high water mark when the lake was at its peak in the 1970s and 80s and since then the water has dropped hundreds of feet for now that you know what the buried treasure is let me elaborate to you why this Canyon is so special so oh my I have scoured Google Earth for the most interesting Canyons that are connected to the Glen Canyon main Canyon and this one is an amazing representation of what Glen Canyon used to look like except on a much greater and more extreme scale so everything you see on this hike today multiply that times a thousand in terms of beauty scale of the Canyons historic artifacts and that is what Glen Canyon would look like as you can imagine when we built the Glen Canyon Dam thousands of places like this that showcase an incredible amount of history and knowledge that we can gain about the way that indigenous people lived in North America were buried underwater when we created that Dam on Google Earth the picture of where the water is for the lake started way back there so I was expecting to have hit the lake a long time ago so it's just insane how fast this water is dropping once that water drops anymore it is going to jeopardize the Colorado river that runs through the bottom of the Grand Canyon which may stop flowing if the dam is not able to accommodate the water once it goes below the turbine intakes we are currently walking in a place where boats would have been driving over our heads about 10 years ago in that white line you see up on the cliff that is the high water mark uh when the reservoir was not in such a steep decline we are currently hiking through a canyon that is reemerging 10 20 30 40 years ago it was a lifeless place you could say that there's life that lives in Lake Powell and yes there are fish but nothing compared with the amount of vegetation biodiversity I mean I've just seen so much life in the bottom of this Canyon since we started hiking it this morning Birds Wildlife everything you can imagine is reclaiming this place and I mean just look at the sheer magnitude of these Canyon walls it still has a lot of recovering to do but it is it is extremely gratifying to see how the red coloration of the Sandstone is starting to return compared with its white lifeless color that was given to it from the lake water so you see those red streaks coming down the water is washing away all the sediment on the cliffs the color of the rock will come back and it will return however what we are seeing a lot of in the bottom of this River there's a ton of silt so the silt is deposited on the bottom of the canyon when the reservoir was here all of this silt right here would not have existed probably would have been beautiful sandstone rocks much like what we're seeing up there that used to be the bottom of the river here however the silt is draining away pretty quick [Applause] we have been hiking close to 18 miles today literally since sunrise but it has been worth every step every scratch I have getting to see a little portion of this beautiful place is just so incredible to me I'm further energized on my interest in this subject I really do feel like where we are is a pretty great representation of what it used to be like all right well I hope you enjoyed watching this video if you are interested in learning more about the story of America's LW National Park and coming along with me as I plan on exploring many many more parts of it when it reemerges into daylight I highly recommend you subscribe to the
