[Music] suikoden started off as a heavily underrated series from the mid 90s and early 2000s over time it began gathering more and more fans word spread out and it gained the popularity it finally deserved nowadays being extinct on its way to becoming a new ip called a youth and chronicle suicide has become one of the most important jrpg series of all time most specifically due to its three uniquely different battle mechanics so today we're going to determine which of its games has the best battle system in the series [Music] each of the five main titles in this legendary franchise has three different combat modes its spinoffs only had one and they were good but kinda average to be honest so i'd like to focus on its main releases to see which one had the best battle system and since there's three maybe only one will stand out per title let's find out starting off with a regular turn-based system which is the one you'll be playing the most in the games it involves the random battles and most of the boss battles with the exception of sweeker than 4 each game could have up to 6 party members per battle in every system you select everybody's actions at the beginning and the order of execution intertwines with the enemies now the first two games had it cool featuring some combination attacks and the use of runes which means magic attacks back then it was a great idea to see a turn-based rpg with so many active party members at once if we count the possibilities of combinations and magic attacks i'd say they had an original interface the evolution was kinda lame in my opinion though as much as i loved suica than three and four i felt developers took a wrong turn somewhere in three you could only select the actions of one character per row of two characters which meant the other one would act randomly or just defend this only made the battles harder and disorganized less strategic ford was great to remove that but also watered down the number of active allies to four like why what was wrong with six so finally suicide five came about went back to six party members and added some really cool features to keep the battles more engaging which is why i think it has the best turn-based system of the series first of all you could now change formations the more you advance in the game the more of them you could acquire or learn suicide 5 is a challenging rpg perhaps a little bit more than the others so some of these formations were pretty useful if you were in a bind each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages so it was all about finding which one was the best for certain boss or area second in three and four you could take with you non-fighting allies as support members each will do different things like healing your party after battle or buffing them before it but we already established those two games had flawed combat mechanics five doesn't and it also has support members something i wish sweeter than one and two could have had another thing they didn't is that in sweeker than five you can have a couple of reserved party members to switch to outside of battle at any given time those are all the most relevant features in the turn-based system of the game it's not a drastic evolution from its predecessors i know let me put it this way suica then 5 simply took everything right from them and improved it by adding a few extra characteristics that made battles more fun let's talk now about the duels once again they are quite similar in every release with a few differences between them the first game had a clunky interface but it still worked just fine it was innovative back then and i don't think any other rpg had something similar simple enough it revolved around a rock paper scissors mechanic but you'd have to guess or rather anticipate the enemy's move by what they were saying often it was too easy to know which kind of action they'd perform as it was too obvious but others it could be very cryptic so it was kind of unbalanced overall it laid the basis for the dual system in future entries now based on this it's not too hard to choose which one had the best one in the series they were all very similar with a slightly different interface with each entry in sweeker than two duels were literally identical to the first game just with slightly better controls suicide 3 added this new feature called the dual gauge the more the bar moves to the enemy side the higher the chances of attacking first this kinda make the rock paper scissors rule almost useless so the predictability of the enemy actions was more dependent on the bar and in suica and five there was a time limit to choose your actions i always felt pressured by it especially because it produces an alarm sound that makes it even more stressful nope i love this game two pieces but it had the worst dual system of the series the dual since weaker than 4 got rid of the dual gauge and went back to normal and they didn't have any time limit but they have two small additions one every action had a full power option so if you anticipated the enemies moved right you could do some massive damage to them you could only use it once though which was okay because we didn't want these battles to be too easy second i guess i should add that the duals here were longer so depending on how much you enjoy them that was a good thing in conclusion i'm saying this game took the original system in suica then 1 and 2 basically improving it a little bit yep it's the black sheep of the family no doubt about it and i actually agree however it at least had the best dual system just because of those two small details [Music] last but definitely not least the war battles these were strategic in every sense of the word on every suicide game unlike the turn based or dual battle systems these are very hard to compare for one reason they were all drastically different from each other let me discard first the not so interesting ship battles in suica then 4 because i've always preferred human army battles and i've never been a fan of ships anyway suikoden 3 had this hex system showing the leaders in cards and i actually liked it a lot but once they go into battle it becomes a hollow turn-based rpg with barely any control and bad a.i damn i adore this game but i admit its three battle mechanics are kinda troublesome i'll discard the first week of them as well because these overview strategy battles weren't really that fun they're cool but i didn't find them all that engaging so the real competition is between suicide and two and five the latter introduced a real time strategy system which i absolutely loved you took command of several platoons while selecting the directions you wanted them to move to upon making contact this animation will play and the result will be determined by a rock paper scissor system but sometimes the platoon with more units could stand a chance against a stronger unit movement in the map however was always slow and nothing things got pretty chaotic sometimes it was hard to control the flow of battle here so i admit the map design wasn't all that great i still absolutely loved it though in fact this system became my favorite in the series but i have to admit it's very niche hard to get into and just not for everybody plus several missions included cheap battles and as i've stated before i wasn't their biggest fan so i gotta give the throne to suicide 2. it's easier to understand play enjoy and even control it resembles a lot of grit based tactical rpgs so let me explain they play in these top down view maps each character leading a platoon you could add two more characters to it and each will have different buffs or defects like critical attacks or better attack better defense if units were mounted on horses they could move up to two squares while foot soldiers would move just one making contact with an enemy play these awesome animations that will take up several status to determine the outcome the mission objectives were quite diverse sometimes you'd have to kill all enemy units but often it was just the enemy commanders or sometimes you'd have to enter their base with your leader or survive for a certain amount of turns etc some units can use runes during battle or even flame lances this could be really helpful to deplete faster the enemy's platoons and it's important to know because an enemy unit doesn't disappear unless every single soldier is dead one thing i haven't mentioned is that these war battles in any suicide have permanent death if an ally platoon was wiped out the non-essential characters to the story in it will permanently die so since since suicide 5 was sometimes hard to control the platoons the chances of losing someone were higher that gives more points to suicide 2 with its nice interface and map design plus you start the ice better because if you mess up you know it's your own damn fault unlike in suicide and 5 where platoons could mess up just because they were accidentally too close to a stronger one after retreating overall i like the system in sweeker than 5 way more but i admit suica than 2 just had better design so to conclude this video suicide 5 has the best turn based system suikoden 4 has the best dual system and suicide 2 has the best war battle system but if there can only be one winner let that be sweeper than 5 simply because it's my favorite and i enjoyed two of its three battle mechanics the most out of the entire series but that's just my personal pick what is yours this series will always be remembered for its several features unique like no other rpgs with three different battle systems war based stories and political dramas army creation tons of playable characters gameplay revolving around recruiting them seriously how did konami let this franchise die fortunately original developers of this series came back together with a successful kickstarter they may not be able to hold the same name but we all know deep inside he will be sweeping nonetheless so on to wait for a juden chronicle to see how its three battle mechanics will play out thanks for watching don't forget to
