hey it's Margie with the asking spot and I'm gonna give this one a try there's a lot of times you come across pieces that aren't wholly completely messed up and really this should do the trick especially if it's vintage or antique this old dresser has some minor Nicks on it now I should be taking off the handles of it but I'm just gonna do a test section just to see if this will work for it in order to do this you should clean it off I'm going to be using some 50 50 vinegar water just to make sure anything that's kind of greasy on this piece will be gone before I go ahead and try and use restore finish um how do we do this process for using restore finish from Howard's is you wipe it on and then immediately wipe it off now depending on how deep or how messed up the gouges in the piece you might want to do some triple odd very fine steel wool but start the cloth first because you can probably do more damage than good if you rub on too hard seems simple enough basic principle on this one is it's got something that will kind of dissolve the lacquer or the slack so you don't want to leave it on a long time you just want to get it so that the stain can blend in with what's already on the piece so you're going to wipe it on quickly and wipe it off just as fast work in small sections too and then this happened a mad dashed into the house and uh got away from the rain but here's the final results looks pretty good I mean yeah I could do a little more on there but it would work this is a more modern beast but with very similar wear and tear markings on it we'll restore a finish work on this let's give it a shot I'm going to start out the same way as I did with the other one first cleaning it using once again the vinegar and water it's really good to degrease a piece like this because you know polishes from the past lever residue on it that can mess with anything else you try to put on it so always clean first ah and another thing this comes in eight different colors now my store only carried four colors but make sure you check that before you buy so on this one doing the same thing I did with the last one I'm gonna wipe on and wipe off nothing's happening nothing's happening nothing's happening it's over a lot of people in the audience look pissed well that was a uneventful switch actually I wasn't really surprised here's the reason why there's nothing to do with this product this product works great I'll tell you more about it in a sec but this has a poly top AKA poly plastic it's either a polyurethane or polycrylic that does not work with this this works with a shellac or lacquer topping so more likely to be found on your vintage or antique pieces however lacquer is still used and it is coming back in popularity so it may be useful to you but if you're using one of these it's just kind of a waste now how do you know if the piece you're working on is a poly top or a lacquer or shlack top good question try a little alcohol cheers yeah even the type you do in a cocktail although probably easier just use a little your icy propol it's your rubbing alcohol if you have mineral spirits that works great just the tiniest little bit of a cotton swab or cotton Q-tip kind of thing you'd wipe it on an inconspicuous spot if it comes off Bingo you've got shellac or you've got a lacquer topping and yes this will work if it doesn't come off you gotta go with the old-fashioned sand it down all the way down restained re-top with poly acrylic or polyurethane now to be fair to poly acrylic and polyurethane while they aren't as easy to fix with something like this the reason they are considered so much better than the other two is well you could put an alcoholic drink on them and you're not going to dissolve the Finish there you go hope that gives you the info you need and thank you so much for watching the asking spot would really appreciate a thumbs up and subscription would be super nice it helps out the channel thanks again I'm Margie with the asking spot Gap bloopers next it's because of the time period or an era that this was made in now if it was an antique or vintage it was probably going to be made in uh shellac top coat which would be the antique vintage would more than likely be a lacquer top coat now they still use lacquer in a lot of toppings Lane I've got this place cleaned off now I made sure this piece has been cleaned I used a bit of rubbing alcohol nope that's how you know if it's gonna take
