I come from the south but live in the north (pretty much the top of England) to go to University.
I often think of the difference like this: in the south, if you had been stabbed and were lying in the street, everybody would ignore you and walk on. If you were stabbed in the north, you have a 50/50 chance of being helped by someone very kind - albeit completely unintelligible - or of being stabbed a second time.
