[Music] we're all the way south in the heel of the boot we are doing a little bit of a road trip today this town is known for cliff diving look at the water look at the fish oh my gosh there are steps we are definitely on the right path this is incredible last week we picked up a rental car in naples before driving across the country to the capital of the puglia region bari where we strolled through the walled city visited the tomb of saint nicholas and learned about the age-old art of making oracety and today we're taking an incredibly beautiful road trip from the adriatic coast to the ionian sea we're howard and caitlin new state dog people food people adventure people we've been living on the road for the past three years traveling through north america and beyond for the past several weeks we've taken you along as we've eaten and explored our way through italy from coast to coast city to town by boat train and automobile you've been with us as we visited over a dozen places in this gorgeous country and with only a few more stops to go we'll show you why this region of italy should be a must visit on your list today's episode is sponsored by wonderlog a great way to plan travels for yourself or with a group well it's time to say goodbye to bari and on to the next adventure we are doing a little bit of a road trip today down the coast yeah this feels like old times i know we're back in the car again yeah maybe stopping along the way check out a couple small towns some grottos and our next destination is leche howard's doing a great job navigating crazy streets not that bad we have just completed one of my favorite activities which is going to legal didn't honestly think we were gonna do a road trip without snacks did you it's always so fun surprises aisle little sneakers little sneakers look at that how boss is that wow they're even my size uh-huh and then you've got all the pastries and it's just great so we have stocked up here all right 30 minutes til our first stop [Applause] mmm pizza bread solid snack number one [Music] we found some rvs it's a beautiful spot yeah i guess you can camp there you should save this on the map wow look at that [Music] poliani polagnano palignano i'll get it eventually this town however you pronounce it is known for cliff diving yeah the 2018 red bull cliff diving finals were held here it's an epic spot for that the other thing of interest that caitlyn discovered in research was there is a pseudo myth that this actually was originally part of greece and much like people make jokes about florida breaking off from new york and floating down and reattaching to georgia that's what they claim here about this town that it originally was part of greece broke free floated over and then attached itself to italy it's because like there's whitewash walls it looks kind of similar to greece and then that's the reasoning for why it's so jagged and cliff-like on this coast here obviously that is impossible are you sure it's a pretty fun little myth this for irony we actually can't get down there right now because they're filming there's a huge amount of cast and crew down there i'm guessing it's probably a tv show it doesn't look big enough to be a movie so it's probably a tv show but um [Music] oh well this is beautiful though we didn't need we didn't need to go down there anyway right going into the old town now [Music] this has been a great first stop on our little road trip it is a very charming town you can see the appeal there are a lot of tourists here and it's just absolutely gorgeous [Music] all right our second road trip stop is savaletri if it can be hard to follow along or take notes on all of these stops we get it a top question that we get since we started sharing our travels is how someone can find our itinerary or plan a similar trip like the one you see here yeah and the challenge for us has been how do we plot out our route and then add all those destinations and activities and they make it easy for you to then not have to copy and paste or create those documents that have endless links of things just so that way you can plan your own trip that's why we're so excited to announce our partnership with wunderlog built from the ground up to help you plan your best trip ever you can find a companion guide for this road trip along with itineraries from other travelers for free by visiting wonderlog through the link in the description now wonderlock makes it really easy not only for us to create those guides and maps but for you to link in the description for wonderlog and let's keep exploring the poulia region this is a very quiet seaside town it is gorgeous so if you're looking for something that is not super crowded especially during the weekdays this is where you'll want to come and you get those amazing sea views the buildings are gorgeous and they are very well known for certain delicacy that is not everybody's cup of tea they perhaps if you're howard this is his least favorite food on the planet sea urchin i'm not sure if they're like in between seasons right now but we didn't really see any on the menu a lot of the restaurants are closed right now for like that mid day break so we're just going to kind of stroll around and then hit the road to our next stop the hanging flowers oh gosh you're asking the wrong person all right this is road trip snack number four this is a pizza which is like a stuffed pizza i guess i would say like they're they're round when you see it let's see what i mean it doesn't look like a normal pizza [Music] inside of here is hopefully deliciousness it's just bread we were lied to oh salami i feel it's completely live you should probably rip it down the middle there's nothing in here it is just bread okay well we had a good track record with the snacks this is good bread so i thought it was gonna be stuffed i thought that's what this was but it's not it's like it's like a pizza round like you can put things on it oh wow good morning good morning leche so we just picked up some coffee and tea and croissants we're staying at an adorable bed and breakfast but because of kova they aren't allowed to actually serve the breakfast part of the bed and breakfast inside so they have a partnership with a little cafe down the street and we just come and present our card and get our breakfast for the morning yeah so we got some pastries and some coffee and tea and now we're going to start our adventure of the day caitlyn i can't wait yes i'm very excited it's kind of a continuation of yesterday's road trip but we're all the way south in the heel of the boot now we're going to all kinds of beautiful places [Music] okay we've made it to our first stop which is roca vecchia the grato de la pocia and howard is buying our tickets right now it is three euros right three euros a piece and it is already incredibly beautiful we're in we downloaded an app as it was prescribed to do i use the word prescribed because that's the way it translated that we are prescribed to do it so this app should have um videos and information so we can learn about what it is that we're about to be seeing which i think is a series of grottos and ancient carvings all along the cliff side of the water this is an archaeological site so it is protected by the region here and that's why you have to pay an admission fee and they're very particular about what you can and cannot bring in wow so that coastal watchtower was built in 1568 and was occupied it sounds like for a very long time um contained a water cistern on the bottom and then the upper floor was like a kind of a lounge at their fireplace and that's where they would guard from pretty cool unfortunately the qr codes aren't working oh no no but um i i these are definitely structures i'm going to try and find out what they are yeah you can see like the remnants like outlines of maybe rooms or yeah see these look like rooms they're carp which is amazing by the way they're carved into the rock so i presume that there was then um stones that were laid on top of this in order to form structures you can see like some of it yeah over there [Music] what did you find i found a lot of old and new graffiti which is kind of unfortunate and sad because it's hard to tell which part is the older graffiti that you're supposed to be looking at from bygone eras and then there's these modern things i'd like to shout out by the way travel beans the channel that we saw a video of this site and i was like wow i gotta try and find this which is a medieval penis but this one has to top them all you'll find them through the ages though i'm not really certain exactly from what era this might be from but boy oh boy someone really had to want to draw that as they carved into the rock imagine how long that took caitlyn that is art trouble beans is one of my new favorite channels they're both just so cute and so funny and their little segment on this is excellent so we were we were in tears laughing about it definitely and now we're standing here wow it all comes full circle doesn't it look at the water look at the fish oh my gosh wow howard was the brave one who went all the way down into the grotto i decided considering how clumsy i am and the fact that i'm wearing sandals to wait up here and take photos we're here on a thursday right now and it's also the end of october so it's off season middle of the week great time to come there are only a handful of other tourists so we can really take our time and take all the photos that we want without any people in them it's great [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay ladies and gentlemen now begins our actual nature hiking portion of this show caitlin where are we heading grata di christopher god bless you there's a there are grottos all along this part of the coast and we've already seen one i can't wait to see this one i know they're just so beautiful like the stone and the caves and the color of the water is just so like mind blowing at this stop is where you'll be able to see like some small rock islands this is beautiful the water is so crystal clear you can see straight down to the bottom and look at this beautiful rock [Music] formation we found the grotto we think we'd climb down off the rocks down onto the beach which i'm really surprised there are so many people swimming today take steps [Music] there are steps we are definitely on the right path this is the grotto hello are you grotto could be i mean that's definitely that's what it looked like on the internet did was this yeah so perhaps there's definitely a lot of things carved in yeah i'm not really certain what the purpose is for these alcoves if you know please put it in the comments below they look like they were carved out maybe for a fire i can see kind of a spot where it looks like something has been burnt but look how deep this one yeah it's really deep in there i was reading that so obviously the sea was much higher and this was there was like you know people would wreck their ships on the coast here and climb in here for like refuge so yeah perhaps that's cold people are a lot braver than i am oh my goodness cold yeah it's like frigid [Music] time to eat we ordered one pizza and he was like are you sure you only want one and then he put it in half for us [Music] okay we've seen this this this and now we are here so let's go see what's here this is like really scenic cliffsides that uh they look like multi-layer it's like beautiful i want to say it's sandstone maybe or limestone wow as you walk around you get different angles of the formation this is incredible [Music] [Music] [Applause] all right we had to make some executive decisions because it's 3 30 we've been on the adriatic coast all day now we're going over to the ionian coast yes which is like basically just the other side of the heel but we're hoping that we're gonna make sunset at a beautiful location and things will work out and we'll be able to take you with us so now we're heading to gallipoli gallipoli [Music] welcome to gallipoli yeah we found parking on the main road which is pretty incredible thank you again for october off season makes it really easy we're gonna go check out the old city now the old city is only accessible by a 17th century bridge so you can walk across it and then it's like its own little island i'm really excited if you've been watching our other episodes you know we've been going to a bunch of walled cities wall towns but i will say this each one is unique and different and sometimes it's the architecture sometimes it's the colors in this case i feel like this walled city is definitely different architecturally speaking and also from a color palette standpoint it's lots more of beige and white i've noticed that as opposed to some of the other areas we've been in and the name gallipoli means a beautiful city well it certainly is beautiful we made it this is something very nice about sunset in walled city also i love that in 45 minutes we were all the way across yeah we went from coast to coast isn't it funny if you're looking for a spot to grab a drink or a bite to eat and watch the sunset you only have two options that's it on this side of the city so we're gonna choose one of them we have a 50-50 shot i'm gonna relax a little [Music] ten out of ten this is perfect cheers let's talk about this free food i don't know if we've actually talked about what apertivo is uh you know how like in the u.s they have like bar nuts at happy hour that's kind of this so happy hour in italy zapertino and so you sometimes will get like sandwiches as you can see they'll have fruits sometimes veggies a lot of times it's stuff like this like fresh baked stuff so um it's great free food and all you have to do is just buy a drink not bad i got a mojito to mix it up a little bit i'm gonna try it this looks like prosciutto and cheese [Music] it was wonderful yeah it was definitely just the right thing we needed to cap off a really awesome day oh and the time of year it is right now too the sun sets perfectly behind the lighthouse out there so picturesque all right let's go home and go to bed yeah thanks so much for coming along with us on this epic road trip across the polia region of italy remember if you want a copy of our full itinerary from this trip click the link in the description of this video to check out wunderlog don't forget to subscribe and
