have you ever given serious thought to what happens when we die there seems to be a lot of confusion about where the dead go many believe that everyone interest-rate into heaven are that we simply cease to exist job asked in job fourteen fourteen if a man dies shall he live again death is a serious subject only the Bible can answer the question what happens to us when we die in mark 12 18 through 27 Jesus is asked a question by the Sadducees who did not believe in a resurrection they were trying to trap him into proving there was not a resurrection by using Mosaic law on marriage for the living in verse 24 jesus answered them are you not therefore mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God for when they rise from the dead they neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like angels in heaven but concerning the dead that they rise if you're not read in the book of Moses and the burning bush passage how God spoke to him saying I am the God of Abraham the god of Isaac and the God of Jacob he's not the god of the dead but the god of the living you are therefore greatly mistaken God's Son Jesus tells us where our hope lies he is not the god of the dead but the God of the living everyone we love will die physically and will not be seen on this earth again but they're not dead they are alive in Genesis chapter 2 and verse 7 we read and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being we find in Genesis chapter 3 and verse 19 God tells Adam that he shall return to the ground in the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground for out of it you were taken for this you are and to dust you shall return the earth is where we were today when we die our body goes into the grave and our spirit returns to God where we enter into a place known as the hid the end realm david wrote in psalm 16 and verse 10 for you will not leave my soul and she'll she'll is the hebrew word referring to the place where the dead reside it is the place where all souls go it is not the physical grave jesus said in matthew 16:18 and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it Hades is a Greek word that means the abode of the dead death itself would not stop Jesus from building his church in Acts chapter 2 and verse 27 Peter quotes the psalmist concerning Jesus for you will not leave my soul in Hades nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption Peter knew that when Jesus died on the cross although his body remained his soul went to a spiritual realm Peter also knew that Jesus his spirit did not remain in the abode of the dead and his body did not see corruption that is decay the Hadean realm is unseen and has two places paradise and torments in Luke chapter 23 verses 33 through 43 we're told that Jesus was crucified between two thieves one on his right hand and one on his left the first thief mocked Jesus saying if you are the Christ save yourself and us but the second theif rebuked the mocker asking him do you not even fear God seeing you're under the same condemnation and we indeed justly for we receive the due reward of our deeds but this man has done nothing wrong then the second thief said to Jesus Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom notice jesus' statement in verse 43 assuredly i say to you today you will be with me in paradise here are two facts we learned from this account Jesus said the second thief was going to be with him in paradise the first thief wasn't going to paradise so he must be going somewhere else earlier in Jesus's ministry he gave insight into the Hadean realm and what is there in Luke 16 in verses 19 through 31 Jesus tells us there was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day but there was a certain beggar named Lazarus full of sores who has laid at his gate desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table moreover the dogs came and licked his sores so it was that the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom the rich man also died and was buried in being in torments in Hades he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom and he cried and said father Abraham have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am tormented in this flame but Abraham said son remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and likewise Lazarus evil things but now he is comforted and you are tormented and besides all this between us and you there is a great gulf fixed so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot nor can those from there pass to us and he said I beg you therefore father that she would send him to my father's house for I have five brothers that he may testify to them lest they also come to this place of torment Abraham said to him they have Moses and the prophets let them hear them and he said no father Abraham but if one goes to them from the dead they will repent but he said to him if they do not hear Moses and the prophets neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead from these verses we see that Hades is divided into two different regions a region called Abraham's bosom or paradise roll Azeris was and where one is comforted in there's a region called torments where the rich man was and where one is in torment we also read there's a great gulf a separation or division between the two regions and it cannot be crossed their fates were sealed with their deaths another revelation here is there is consciousness after death the dead are aware of where they are can remember their past life and can feel pain most importantly however the choices and decisions that both the rich man and Lazarus made in their lives determine their final destination paradise is not heaven and torments has not held they're both waiting places and to the resurrection and final judgment in Luke 23:43 Jesus spoke to the second thief and said today you will be with me in paradise when Jesus and the second thief died their physical bodies were put in the grave but their souls were known to paradise however we know Jesus did not stay in paradise Psalm 16:10 prophesied it and Peter next to 31 and 32 preached it to be so saying he foreseeing this spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ that his soul was not left in Hades nor did his flesh see corruption this Jesus God has raised up of which we are all witnesses in Matthew 28 1 through 6 we have the account of Jesus's resurrection with the angel telling Mary and Mary Magdalene do not be afraid for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified he is not here for his risen Jesus was raised from the dead he did not stay in paradise nor did he return their mark 1619 tells us when Jesus ascended and left this earth he went to heaven not back to paradise so then after the Lord had spoken to them he was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God Jesus returned to heaven to be with God after his resurrection and ascension the second thief is still in paradise awaiting the resurrection and judgment once we die and our bodies put into the physical grave the spirits of those who are faithful to God go to be comforted in paradise those who died and are unfaithful to God go to be tormented in torments whatever state we die in our destiny is sealed there are no second chances whichever place we end up there we will remain in to the resurrection and final judgment in John 5:28 through 29 Jesus tells us do not marvel at this for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice and come forth those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation the word resurrection is translated from the Greek word and nest Isis which is derived from two root words Hannah which means up and hastily which means to cause to stand a resurrection is the rising up of that which has been laid down the body that dies and is laid to rest even if it's burned up lost at sea are destroyed in some other manner will be the same body and identity that comes forth again in the resurrection each person will keep their individuality and will be recognizable without question there is a conscious entity within men known as the spirit there is absolutely no evidence that the spirit of a human being is altered by death at the death of the body the spirit simply passes from one mode of existence into another the Bible clearly affirms that the Spirit is just as conscious and capable of recognition as before the transition of death in Matthew 17 1 through 6 when Moses and Elijah appeared to Christ on the mountain Peter seeing Moses and Elijah recognized him after Jesus's resurrection he was seen and recognized by many first Corinthians 15 5 through 6 tells us he was first seen but Peter he was then seen by the 12 apostles but over 500 brethren at once by James again but all the Apostles and last of all by Paul Luke 16:19 231 tells us after his death the Richmond recognized Lazarus and Abraham Abraham also recognized Lazarus and the rich man the believer resurrection is also found in the Old Testament Daniel 12:2 reads and many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake some to everlasting life some to shame and everlasting contempt the principle of the bodily resurrection is affirmed abundantly in the New Testament in John 6 39 through 40 Jesus states this is the will of the father who sent me that of all he has given me I should lose nothing but should raise it up at the last day and this is the will of him who sent me that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day in chapter 15 verses 1 through 11 of 1st Corinthians the Apostle Paul establishes the foundation for the resurrection through the historical fact of the bodily resurrection of Jesus he then maintained in verses 12 through 34 the Lord's resurrection is heavens guaranteed that we too shall be raised Paul then discusses the nature of the resurrected body in verses 35 through 49 Victory's declared over death and the grave in verses 50 through 57 death is swallowed up in victory o death where is your sting o Hades where is your victory again Jesus tells us in John 5 28 through 29 both the good and the wicked shall be resurrected do not marvel at this for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice and come forth those who have done good to the resurrection of life and those who have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation there will be a universal resurrection in which we will all be raised at the same time and will all enter into eternal life some into eternal bliss some into eternal condemnation Paul states in acts 24:15 I have hope in God which they themselves also accept that there will be a resurrection of the Dead both of the just and the unjust John writes in revelation 20:13 the sea gave up the dead who are in it and death and Hades delivered up the dead who are in them and they were judged each one according to his works the writer Hebrews in 9:27 States and as it is appointed for men to die once but after this the judgment we all have an appointment with death there is no escaping it there will also come a time when we'll be judged for the life we have lived we see this in Ecclesiastes 1214 second Timothy 4:1 and in 2nd Corinthians 5:10 which states for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive the things done in the body according to what he has done whether good or bad we do not know the day or the hour but judgment is coming 2nd Peter 3:10 States but the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise and the elements will melt with fervent heat both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up the day of the Lord is when Jesus returns the world then ends and all were judged including though is still living on the earth and the dead who are waiting in Hades in either paradise or torments John wrote in revelation 20:11 through 12 then I saw a great white throne and him who sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for them and I saw the dead small and great standing before God and books were opened and another book was opened which is the book of life and the dead were judged according to their works by the things which were written in the books every human that has ever lived from the beginning of time will be at the final judgment there will be no exceptions everyone from Adam to whomever is still alive in Christ returns will be there regardless at a status rich poor male female farmers lawyers politicians doctors all nationalities all ages great men and women from all ages will be judged husbands will be judged wise will be judged children parents friends enemies but most importantly you will be there and you will be judged Jesus says in Matthew 7:21 through 23 not everyone who says to me Lord Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven but he who does the will of my father in heaven many will say to me in that day Lord Lord have we not prophesied in your name cast out demons in your name and done many wonders in your name and then I will declare to them I never knew you depart from me you who practice lawlessness just because one calls Jesus Lord does not mean that will go to heaven only those who have fully obeyed God will enter Heaven the judgment scene is pictured by Jesus himself in Matthew 25:31 through 46 when the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him then he will sit on the throne of his glory all the nations will be gathered before him and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats and he will set the sheep on his right hand but the goats on the left then the king will say to those on his right hand come you blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world for I was hungry and you gave me food I was thirsty and you gave me drink I was a stranger and you took me in I was naked and you clothed me I was sick and you visited me I was in prison and you came to me and the righteous will answer him saying Lord when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you drink when did we see you a stranger and take you in or naked and clothe you or when did we see you sick or in prison and come to you and the king will answer and say to them assuredly I say to you and as much as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren you did it to me then he will also say to those on the left hand depart from me you cursed into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels for I was hungry and you gave me no food I was thirsty and you gave me no drink I was a stranger and you did not take me in naked and you did not clothe me sick and in prison and you did not visit me then they will also answer him saying Lord when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to you then he will answer them saying assuredly I say to you in as much as you did not do it to one of the least of these you did not do it to me and these will go away into everlasting punishment but the righteous into eternal life consider the scene for a moment in what the Bible is telling us Christ will separate people from all nations into two groups the righteous living still on earth and the righteous dead waiting in Paradise at Christ's return we'll hear him say come you blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world and they will go to heaven the unrighteous living still on earth and the unrighteous dead waiting in four minutes when Christ returns we'll hear him say depart from me you cursed into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels the unrighteous will go to Gehenna the place of everlasting fire are held paradise it torments will no longer exist after the judgment that separation the righteous from the unrighteous will be eternal revelation 21:8 says but the Cowardly unbelieving abominable murderers sexually immoral sorcerers idolaters and all Liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death there is more to a person than what is visible all people possess an eternal spirit which is immortal and will abide forever even a place of bliss or in torment when the spirit leaves our body the body dies and goes to the physical grave but our spirit immediately goes to Hades if we're saved we go to paradise to be comforted if we're lost we go to torments to suffer wherever we go we await the judgment following the judgment will either go into the presence of God in heaven or we go into the presence of the devil in Gehenna Hell heaven or hell will be the final destination of all souls for all eternity the choice is up to you when this life is over only one thing matters are you ready one cannot live wrong and die right as with the rich man after death it will be too late there will not be an opportunity for repentance or salvation after death our souls our spirits are too precious to lose for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul or what will a man give in exchange for his soul mark 8:36 through 37 if you're not a Christian it is urgent that you obey the gospel Paul tells us in Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God but God doesn't want it to be so he loves you and doesn't want you to be lost he loves you so much that John tells us in chapter 3 in verses 16 through 17 for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life for God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved how do you receive that salvation and obtain everlasting life God's plan of salvation is simple Jesus reveals it through the Bible first we have to hear God's Word in John 5:24 most assuredly I say to you he who hears my word and believes in him who sent me has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment but has passed from death into life next we must believe that Jesus is the Son of God John 8:24 therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins for if you do not believe that I am he you will die in your sins we must repent of our sins Luke 13:3 I tell you no but unless you repent you will all likewise perish we have to confess before men that Jesus is the Son of God Matthew 10:32 therefore whoever confesses me before men him I will also confess before my father who is in heaven we were then baptized by immersion in order to receive the remission of our sins mark 16:15 through 16 and he said to them go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature he who believes and is baptized will be saved but he who does not believe will be condemned and finally we live faithfully to God even unto death revelation 2:10 it faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life the knowledge the Bible gives us of death should cause us to live godly and cause us to take advantage of the grace God has afforded us each of us approaches death with mixed emotions we're said and by the thought of leaving our loved ones behind and work left undone being a child of God gives us comfort knowing that we can look forward to being escorted by the Angels into the presence of Jesus who died for us there we will forever be with the holy Godhead the Angels the faithful of the ages and our own loved ones who died in Christ the answer to job's question in Joe 1414 if a man dies shall he live again is a resounding yes if you have Bible questions
