in recent years in the NBA super teams have been more common than ever but in all reality super teams have been a common thing in the NBA for decades and we all know about the super teams that have gone out and have won championships and have accomplished their ultimate goal what about those super teams that on paper look incredible but in reality just don't perform up to those standards that's what we're going to take a look at today with the worst super teams in NBA history as always if you enjoy this video make sure to leave a like it helps a lot and if you think there's a bad super team that I didn't mention make sure to put it in the comments below because I can make a part two to this video with that being said let's get into some horrible super teams the Houston Rockets in the 1990s were a very very good team even winning back-to-back NBA championships one in 1994 and one in 1995 they were also a team that was not afraid to make big moves and acquire big players they showed that in the middle of a 1994 95 NBA season where they traded for future Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler brought him in and he helped them win that second NBA Championship in a row but after the Rockets won back-to-back NBA championships they started facing some shortcomings in the playoffs in 1996 they would lose in the Western Conference semifinals and after that they felt like they needed to make another big move so in the off season they went out and acquir Charles Barkley and the big three of Charles Barkley Clyde Drexler and AEM elijuan what would have some success in the regular season but not so much in the postseason they would make it to the Western Conference Finals in the first year with the big three where they would end up losing and then the next season they struggled in the regular season going 41 and 41 where they would get bounced out in the first round after losing in the first round Clyde Drexler decided enough was enough and he ended up retiring ending his all the fame NBA career and leaving the Houston Rockets without a big three so if one big three fails what do you do well obviously if you're the Houston Rockets front office apparently what you do is get another big three because in that off season when they lose Clyde Drexler they go ahead and they bring in Scotty Pippen trading for him with the Chicago Bulls now mind you at this point hakee elijuan and Charles Barkley they're not getting any younger both those guys at this point of their careers were in their mid-30s Clyde Drexler obviously had just retired so he was getting up there and Scotty Pippen was just entering his mid-30s when the Rockets acquired him so that Championship window was shrinking and the rockets knew that with Pippen this might be their last chance to contend with the dream on the squad entering the 9899 NBA season the Houston Rockets were up there in the favorites in the league to win the NBA championship so expectations were Skyhigh and they did not play that bad in the regular season going 31 and 19 in a shortened NBA season due to the lockout in the off season securing themselves an NBA playoff spot but unfortunately the team they had waiting for them was the Los Angeles Lakers LED by Shaquille O'Neal Who had a young Kobe Bryant by his side unfortunately for the Rockets the Lakers would prove to just be too much and the rockets would end up losing in the first round in four games and that would be it for the second big three in Houston as Scotti Pippen would be traded that off season Charles Barkley would only go on to play 20 more games in his NBA career before retiring and hem elijuan would only play two more seasons for the Houston Rockets before finishing up his career in Toronto so though the Rockets did win two NBA championships before their super teams were formed they brought in Charles Barkley to form a big three that didn't work out they brought in Scotti Pippen to form a big three that did not work out the biggest reason I would consider both of those big threes as failures would be that the Rockets didn't Embrace a rebuild they kept on trying to extend their Championship window with aging Stars thus setting them back further and further the 98 99 NBA season set the Rockets back so much that they would end up missing the playoffs for the next four seasons and they wouldn't make it past the first round again until 2009 so sometimes embracing a rebuild isn't the worst idea and in this video you're going to see that's kind of a common theme with these teams in the 2019 off season the Brooklyn Nets decided to be very aggressive and try to build the NBA's next super team so they went out and they signed Kyrie Irving in free agency and they went ahead and traded for Kevin Durant because you know he cannot pass up an opportunity for a good super team now the most interesting thing about this super team is it was not designed for that NBA season because Kevin Durant would end up missing the entirety of the Season due to a torren achilles that he sufferred in the NBA finals and the roster was just nowhere near good enough for Kyrie Irving to carry them to any form of success and Kyrie Irving would barely get a chance to try to carry this team because he only played 20 games that season so the 1920 season you can basically disregard it now the 2021 season that's where business was supposed to pick up now it was shortened due to co so there was only 72 games instead of the normal 82 but the Brooklyn Nets were supposed to be a serious Contender for the championship this season being the third odds on favorite preseason to win the NBA championship so you got KD healthy you got Kyrie healthy what more do you need that's good enough for most teams but like I said the Nets wanted to be a super team so they go out and they trade for James Harden in January of the season to just further solidify that they are indeed a super team at the time of the trade the Brooklyn Nets were seven and six and with bringing in Harden they had hoped that James would spark the team and that the three big Superstars would be able to lead the Nets to success and the Nets were pretty successful as they went 48 and 24 and were a two- seed in the Eastern Conference they would beat the Celtics in the first round in five games and in the Eastern Conference semifinals also known as the second round they would come up against the Milwaukee Bucks and this is probably one of the greatest series in NBA Playoffs history and definitely one of the greatest game sevens in NBA history between these two teams as I'm sure most people remember this was a very back and forth series the Nets wi the first two games the Bucks win the next two games the teams go back and forth we got a game seven the game Seven's really close game seven is so close it comes down to the last possession in regulation where one of the more interesting moments in NBA history happens where Kevin Durant makes a shot that looks like a three but it turns out his foot's on the line it's a two-pointer Well we all know how it goes that would push the game to OT where the Milwaukee bucks would eventually best the Brooklyn Nets and go on to steamroll the Atlanta Hawks and win the NBA championship versus the Phoenix Suns well makes this super team very interesting is how close they actually were I mean they were literally inches away from more than likely going to the NBA finals because let's be honest that Atlanta Hawks team was not going to beat the Nets or the bucks so whoever won that series was more than likely going to the NBA finals and after losing to the Milwaukee Bucks this big three would slowly be deconstructed over time with James Harden being traded to the Sixers KD would eventually be traded to the Suns and Kyrie Irving would eventually be traded to the Mavericks making this one of the biggest big threes in NBA history and also one of the most short-lived big 3es in NBA history and I could sit here and talk about the depth that the Nets had but it was during the year after covid where they had a bunch of different regulations so over 20 people suited up for the Brooklyn Nets that year so I'm not even going to try to mention the depth they had KY they had Kyrie they had James Harden they had solid depth around them but unfortunately the big three stars just could not stay on the court together and the super team was just completely unsuccessful and the Nets got rid of so many draft picks to acquire Harden and KD that they set their franchise back quite a bit which they've been doing for a while and that actually leads me into my next team in the 2012 2013 season the Brooklyn Nets went 49- 33 but they would end up losing in the first round of the Chicago Bulls at seven games and apparently losing that series made the Nets want to completely redo their entire roster and that's exactly what they did when they went out and traded for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett along with Jason Terry I guess I should probably mention him too and honestly I don't know what the Brooklyn Nets front office was really cooking Kevin Garnett was 37 entering this NBA season and Paul Pierce was also getting up there he was actually 36 to be exact and Jason Terry was also old I have no idea why the Nets did this trade it's one of the worst trades in NBA history I've covered it before but I guess on paper what they created was a super team they had Paul Pierce they had Kevin Garnett they had Darren Williams who was one of the top point guards in the league at the time and they also had Brook Lopez who was a very respectable Center at the time still is to this day but entering the season the hype was real and everyone believed that this could be a real super team for some reason and you know what credit to them because their team was very old but they actually went 44 and 38 and secured themselves a playoff spot and surprisingly in the first round they would end up beating the Toronto Raptors in seven games but unfortunately in the second round this Brooklyn Net super team would would end up facing a real super team and lose to the heat in five games I also forgot to mention this Net's team had Joe Johnson I don't know why I forgot to mention him but he was really good for them probably actually their best player that season so shout out to ISO Joe but obviously with the age of most of the players on this team the Nets would eventually just deconstruct their entire roster and try to reset which was hard to do because they basically traded all their future draft picks to the Celtics to acquire Garnett Terry and Pierce but they would enter the rebuilding process before eventually going back into the super team building process where I just covered where they traded for Durant signed Kyrie traded for Harden and then they just deconstructed that roster so now they're back in the rebuilding process and it must be really tough to be a Brooklyn Nets fan I mean that franchise seems to be in a constant state of building a super team deconstructing that roster rebuilding building a super team deconstructing that roster rebuilding so in 3 to four years time I'm not going to be surprised if they have another big three and then it fails and they re build again seems inevitable well that's going to do it for today's video talking about super teams I will say I did purposely leave out a few super teams because I do plan on doing a part two I just didn't want them to be included in this video because I don't want this video to end up being 20 or 30 minutes long but like always thanks anyone for staying through the entire video to hear this appreciate it more videos will be coming going to try to start daily uploading I guess but yeah until next time see you
