make my practice swing I can do it without stopping yeah but then when you put a ball down there I can't do it you asked us to play nobody to play with them because we know how much you used to be so good and now if you hit anywhere off the tee or near the water we say good shot that's a good shot what just what did Tiger would say about this Tigers work with me many many hours he would never take that credit he told you to quit you know it's it's frustrating for me but I can't quit cuz if you quit well I did announce my retirement for golf but I cuz it's so frustrating because I used to be a throwing his name at them but tell him you saying wait you know he has worked with me but it's in my it's in my head and there's nothing I can do about it it's very frustrating so why don't you just have to be a defensive rider you have to be a defensive driver you don't have time to talk on the phone you have time enough to eat you know how to tell them to do a lot of things most people do every single day which is more dangerous than riding a motorcycle yeah you have to really be focused on seeing the traffic ahead he doesn't know about this he's never ridden a motorcycle you never go out and we would have that we'd go play pool all the time yeah we would rope off an area yeah it'd be like a hundred people just standing behind the Rope just staring at him all night I mean it was unbelievable and everything at him do what just shoot poo I mean they're sitting there for like two hours straight leg and like when I'm out with other famous people like it's no big deal they had asking for autograph but he's the only person what people will just stand back and stare we had to rope off an area I'm serious I'm talking one steering just send us there and him shooting pool what do you think that is it's just nuts they just knows but you know you do you but know it's a it's like like he's beyond iconic stature he's got a great charisma yeah he's always dressed fantastic yeah you know he has what I call it yeah but together that's exactly yeah he has a lot cause it would be like coming up Charles on Michael as a dad for two nights this man kept me awake now it's disturbed and violent and raging and raging why this mesmerizing story hit home for so many of you that is like being crucified tomorrow's Oprah [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I think he's a great dad I think it's a really tough call for him yeah because people don't expect his kids to be great players yeah and it's really unfair it's hard on his kids you know yes and I think he has done a magnificent job of not force feeding his kids basketball like that was hard for me I got one sixteen year old yeah and she's about 510 511 got a great athletic body I want her to play basketball so bad yeah she don't like sports and I tried to push it toward it and I bagged off not accepted facts you're gonna break up what dad's heart but I see you've let it go it's hard to let go yeah yeah and I know he wants this kid to be great basketball because I think all parents especially somebody like us who have been great at sports you want your kids to play but it's the greatest thing in the world I don't think there's in it being like playing sports really isn't is the thing a rock stars pretty good don't you isn't it kind of like that like if you were on a stage every night with like Bono I think that's pretty damn cool yeah but I think the difference is like the difference is you're a sport yeah in all honesty is you get paid off a potential a rock star you have to be good you know I mean you get paid off the potential in our sport oh really yeah cuz every game it's about the potential or even any of you if you come in now most tell young kids I mean now we don't know how good great they're gonna be but yet they got five year guaranteed millions of dollars admirations of many but don't you think that's partly because of you partly interpreted totally wrong and I would say well they say that will straighten me out or will straighten you out yeah but let me say this one no let him straighten me out why he dominates everything no I want you to tell me why reason is that when you look back in our era yeah you know Michael Jordan Magic Johnson's Larry Bird Charles Barkley's we earn what we got that means when the corporate deeper pain you mean the young kids yeah because I think it's something that they have to learn and hopefully they will learn that is that when they when the corporate America came to us we had a game that could validate their admiration and what sponsorship and all that yeah now they get that before they play one game so you're rolling the dice to see if this kids ever gonna be good or not yeah so in essence you paying the kid off of potential yeah that he may be great you don't think that's good no because I said I think it says bad work ethic when you get something so easily you're not gonna work as hard [Music] coming up what Michael loves about his friend Charles you what kind of friend is he he just said he loved you Lovejoy's I think he's very honest I'm really honest and sometimes you know he speaks before thinking yeah you know and when he thinks about it you realized that was a dumb statement yeah we have friends we have very seldom I don't think you could ever I don't think anybody they shouldn't ask me it ain't like I walk in a place yeah and say hey listen to me big they were coming to me asking me questions yeah and I'm gonna go always be honest and I saw only thing I've always hated about the press that's just wait a minute I didn't come to your house and ask you questions you came to me and asked me a question and I was honest now you pissed [Music] but isn't it great I mean I think I think that I have a great friend - who tells me the truth but isn't it great to have somebody to tell you the truth you never have to worry if they are in any way not telling you the truth I have no problem with Charles he's always gonna tell me the truth his truth yeah you know which is good I mean cuz it gives me something to think about from a different perspective yeah I mean my wife does the same thing she gets time we can in argument she tells me the truth I got other friends that tell me the truth but it's good to have a guy who's been in the same situation but why do you love him look at Their personalities are so different. MJ is awful at small talk and, as always, overly competitive; Chuck is so authentic. Over the course of the interview he makes fun of MJ and himself, tells MJ he loves him, gives him sincere compliments. It's a fun throwback interview.

This is why I love r/NBA. I get to see the off-court stuff I vaguely remember as a child.

If this interview had happened in the post-smartphone age between like LeBron and some all-time great who’d never won it all and was drafted a few years before him (but was part of his ‘era’), it’d break the sub, ESPN, NBA Twitter, and anything that touches the professional game.
