through this entire series changed it we were supposed to be preaching on something else but I saw what we as the people were going through and God said I need you to talk on this and he gave me the title for the series so don't get all bent out of shape when you hear it I'm in the book of Habakkuk tell me the last time you read that do you mean tell you where it is it's in the Old Testament one of the minor prophets Oh back up chapter one we'll definitely make sure we put down the screen for you I'm a read a lot is that okay let's duel our reading today I'm gonna reverse this one through thirteen here's what Habakkuk chapter one verses one through thirteen says the Oracle which aback of the prophet saw how long O Lord will I call for help and you will not hear I cry out to you violence yet you do not save why do you make me see iniquity and cause me to look on wickedness yes destruction and violence are before me strife exists and contention arises therefore the laws ignored and justice is never upheld for the wicked surround the righteous therefore justice comes out perverted look among the nations observe be astonished wondered because I'm doing something in your days you would not believe if you were told for behold I'm raising up child ends that fierce and impetuous people who march throughout the earth to cease dwelling places which are not theirs they are dreaded and feared they're just as an authority originate with themselves their horses are swifter than leopards and keener than wolves in the evening their horsemen come galloping their horsemen come from afar they fly like an eagle swooping down to devour all of them come for violence are you seeing the picture there's a big army coming for our people and you are sitting back and you are doing nothing about they're horrid and faces moves forward they collect captives likes and they market kings and rulers are a laughing matter to them they laugh at every fortress and keep up rubble to capture it then they will sweep through like the wind and pass on but they will be held guilty they whose strength is their God but verse 12 are you not from everlasting o Lord my God my holy one we will not die you O Lord have appointed them to judge and you O rock have established them to correct so you thought he was saying the good thing but he's blown he's like wait a second you're the Holy One your God your everlasting if that's who you are then why are we going through what we're going through your eyes are too pure to approve evil and you cannot look on wickedness with favor so then why do you look with favor on those who deal treacherously why are you silent when the wicked swallow up those more righteous than they with your present God's help we're simply going to preach on the subject when God fails part 1 great expectations great expectations when we started our adoption push at Mount Rubidoux and I got to tell you I've been proud of a lot of things at this church but to see how many families I think it's over 40 plus families have brought in 40 plus children into their homes that is just completely it humbles me it's James chapter one in action but I remember when we kicked off that event when Nicole was here and we got together and we had this invisible event we have another one of course coming up soon and we really need you all to to attend that and I'm gonna share with you why in just a moment but I'll never forget we had different kids who have gone through the foster care system and they were telling their story some of you who were there will remember this and there's one particular young lady got up and she began to tell her story about how she was born to a mother who was addicted to meth Child Protective Services got a hold of that and took her out of her mother's home and actually found her father they found her father and that's the way that the story you want to go where you're not put in any kind of system but you're immediately placed with one of your biological parents but as she was telling this story she said as she was with her father her father began to look at her like a father should not look at his daughter began to touch her began to molest her and then invited some of his friends and other family members to do so he's standing right here telling that story Child Protective Services got hold of that and then she is placed back into the foster care system finally another family comes through went through all of the different checks and wanted to foster her and took her home to see if eventually they wanted to adopt her and keep her on her own and everything seemed to be fine she was excited she was about 13 I think maybe 14 years old the time knowing that hey I got a mommy and a daddy inside the home got some other you know foster care brothers and sisters I'll be able to deal with but everything is going to be alright but what they did not know is that this particular couple had a habit a habit that needed financing they looked at this young lady they said man she's 14 but she looks just a little older than that but not too old that that some of the other people who like that kind of thing wouldn't be able to pay top dollar and so what they did is they would take her to hotel rooms and they would leave her in the hotel room and she would just have to wait for a at the door open up the door and somebody would come in drop some money on the counter and be able to do with her whatever they wanted it wasn't just hotel rooms though they would then take her to truck stops in open up truck doors and she would go inside of these doors and perform all kinds of lewd acts of sex and things for money to give to her foster care parents who actually were her pimps and as she's telling this story she is simply saying to us that her innocence is being taken day by day hour by hour and moment by moment since she had prayer God rescue me and send me a Christian family now she's telling the story she's telling it from the standpoint of success because as she was telling us that story she's about 21 years old had a child giving her life over of course to the Lord and is doing well and that's the part of the story that we as Christians love to focus on she made it she's okay but I'll tell you the part that we don't want to spend time on how on earth for not days not weeks not months years not just empty years but years of Prayer years of asking for rescue and rescue doesn't come we'll focus on how eventually she made it but I'll tell you where a lot of us land and when you hear that story it's one thing for that to be someone else's story but as I'm telling that story all of us in some way can identify it not with the end and how God brought us through but the question is why did we go through it for so long in the first place and listen I can deal with us going through financial burdens and and different kind of breakthroughs but come on God a child the stories that were in the last few weeks of of vegans who are living righteously not so fried you Siana talking about that kind of stuff I'm talking about vegans who are living righteously diagnose breast cancer right here in malroux Buddha stories the people have gone to the doctor hoping and we prayed and fasted for a very specific result believing in God faith ain't the issue but yet still somehow in some way it comes out that the diagnosis is absolutely the opposite of what we prayed for families that have been saying God we're on the last leg need a miracle need you to breakthrough and now they're getting ready to divorce and leave and kids are going to be affected all that stuff I could go down the litany of things where it is appeared in our minds God has failed and we can try in front and we can try and put on the holy bravado but we know deep down when the prayer wasn't answered when the diagnosis still came through when the family still fell apart when you still had to attend the funeral service and it's not just a bunch of folk who you would expect that kind of thing I'm talking about the ones who are loving and following God and this junk is happening to us and then you got to walk in here it's all about nobody can take your place and some of us are singing the songs and you're singing it through a mask because if we're honest to ourselves some of us don't want to sing that song and the reason that we we have to get through this moment is because what Adventism has done and the statistics have said it the in north america division did a very specific study asking about six grievances that young people have with the christian seventh-day Adventist Church one of the reasons why our church is not growing in North America it's actually dying because young people are like yo we don't want anything to do with this organization and the number one of the number one reasons they gave about having an issue with what we're doing here is I said our church doesn't leave room for doubt because here's what's real here's what's real the other grievance that that people have just with Christian all over is that we don't deal with reality and here's the reality is all these situation I've just described people dying that you have prayed for diagnosis is still coming that you have prayed for issues still happening that you have prayed for people being raped and molested yes in our congregation that we have played for all under God's watch have not just left you in a place where we have felt that God has failed us but let's be real we've started to doubt him but because we have a culture and here's one of the things that's very important about the culture of Adventism I'll tell you every different denomination has its own culture so don't be thinking oh there's another one I'll go through they got their own stuff everybody got something but but here's the thing that we got we are good at pretending no that's this culture the culture is we have the truth we got the last a message that means the rest of what's happening in our lives shouldn't have any kind of effect on us but at the end of the day it's tearing us apart but remember it's not safe to doubt therefore when we come here we do good at pretending like we're okay with God we're okay with the cancer we're okay with the fact that I was molested in prayed and God never did anything we're okay with the fact that I got raped no we're not but Adventists give the awards for the one who can pretend the most so if I can let you see me singing the song if I can let you see me still preaching through the stuff if I can let you see me still doing it then it's fine but all the while there's something going on why cuz God has not come through and that's a fact yes uncomfortable to say but the young lady was not rescued from molestation the person died from the disease let me tell you something let me say I'm just talking I'll know how I was gonna come out I was talking with the pastors we thought about this see I got a question I've been in ministry at least 17 plus years like me maybe a little a little less I got started young doesn't mean I'm like the oldest on the staff now I'm still not be oldest somebody else has that tile pastor green I just got to tell you all this we had that whole night prayer meeting y'all forgive me I'll just pause and hoping the light of the moon for a second the most impressive thing about the all-night prayer meeting was not the amount of people that showed up it was the fact that when we sang hymns pastor Green did not need a hymnal and knew every single word to the hymn that we were single man you were real Adventist man we love it man but y'all we were talking and I thought about it my batting average of going into hospital rooms where somebody is sick and praying for a healing is not batting even 300 most people that have been in a position where I've gone in and prayed with them they have not ended up getting that prayer answered and somebody says because it's you but then I asked Rebecca I asked Verone I started a text and asked all my friends and and they started to see a pattern and then what we like to do is find text in the Bible that make us feel better about the disappointment talking about all things work together for the good of those that love the Lord and I'm gonna tell you this that's easy for you to say when it's not you but but but help sis understand how the rape works for her good help help the 12 year old boy who's struggling with his sexuality in a healthy way because at 6 & 7 & 8 he had family members touching him in places he did not even touch himself we tell stories about Joseph well you know Joseph was in prison for so many years and then he became the prime minister and you still locked up are y'all following me I'm trying to paint a picture because I want you to be real for a moment that each of us in some way at some moment you prayed for it has it happened and it's not that you're praying selfishly you're not praying for the new car or the Tesla you're praying for a miracle and you've even added this extra incentive on God if you do it I'll tell everybody you did it you'll get glory I mean God you can't pass up on the opportunity now I'm gonna shout it from the rooftops look at what you did and people will be converted and we pray and pray and sometimes things happen and sometimes they don't and then we question our own faith and then we eventually get to a place quite honestly where we question God if we're going to get through this we got to stop pretending like we don't we gotta stop pretending like like we don't have some issues with God cuz I'm gonna take this right now these folk weren't fun they were like look we got problem and we gonna talk about it and this is what I want to do today this is one wanna do for the rest of the series I want to address today through the eyes of Habakkuk and job the very real feeling a reality of why it looks like and feels like in a very real sense that God has failed and I want to tell you God has failed and just stay with me for a moment are y'all stay with me now why this could be two different sermons dealing with Habakkuk and then job and they really deal with two different perspectives but they are dealing with the same issue from Habakkuk perspective he deals with the inactivity of God in the world that's his problem on a global scale Habakkuk asked the question how can you tolerate wrongdoing to your people how can you sit back and see all of the injustice not taking place on a personal level and this is what kind of helps Habakkuk case a little bit he's saying god I'm not even coming to you about me I'm coming on behalf of everybody who is under this arm of these folk who are just completely ravishing and taking absolute and complete advantage of your people in other words a backwards problem is with God's in activity in society in the world and I identify very closer to the back and I'm gonna be very transparent in this particular series because I want you to see transparency modeled so that you can be comfortable doing it as well there had been times where I have not just questioning God but I have questioned his very existence and his very existence being questioned was not because of anything that was happening to me but I could not reconcile and I'm gonna be very frank with you still I'm having a hard time understanding how God sits back and watches a certain group of people for hundreds upon hundreds of years always get the short end of the stick no I literally can't fathom that I see that people of color never get a break and I don't get it the rise of of racism and evil don't care what your political affiliation may be you have to admit this that this is one of the most divided presents disease that we've ever had in our nation's history almost to the point where just as divided is when we had well-known very open races in the White House Richard Nixon and these different kinds of individuals but right now what gets me is unlike God now only can we not catch a break but then you put somebody who actually is against us in the office as a god I don't understand how a black man without a record has less of a chance of getting employment than his white brother with a record help me reconcile the fact that there's only one ethnicity that has a generational poverty help me reconcile the fact that even me as an educated black man with with no felonies on his record when I get pulled over I get nervous I said I won't get it and it's like he keeps letting it happen wicked folk doing all that they want to do getting all kinds of money and living it up and making the laws that bend us backwards and that's why a bad cook even says the law is ignored and justice is perverted and that calls me to black ain't no way you could be up there because how can i reconcile this are y'all say with me job goes differently job doesn't deal with the activity of what's taking place in the world and injustice in the world but job said I don't want to talk about what's happening with me I don't know what's happening in Carolina Egypt all over the place I want to know what's happening with me and what scholars have called jobs cinnamon and job chapter 10 and what he has gone through is they call it God's oppressive watchfulness is the present watchfulness in this sense that God could sit back see something happening and literally do nothing about it y'all sorry I told you I'm keeping this real today remember when Jesus said man do y'all not know that I could call 10,000 angels and they would remove me from the cross well my question is God could you spare one to deal with the rate can you spare one while your daughter's being molested can you spare one to stop it but what they find is that God watches while it happens that's tough see because you can't have it both ways and here is the problem that the people in the Bible are having and one of the greatest issues that people had with God was this reconciling two truths about God how can you be all-powerful and all-knowing and not use the power to intervene in what's happening it's hard to know when someone can and they still don't so Ibaka and Joe are wrestling with an issue that Christians and atheists wrestle with albeit maybe in different ways alike how can we reconcile and of nificent all-powerful God and there's still the evil tragedy sickness rape murder and not just in the world but in our lives specifically and this is an issue quite honestly that we have to be able to address because if we don't address it properly and straight on the devil will pull us into an abyss we'll throw God away altogether how many of you agree that God is sovereign sees all and knows all can do whatever he wants to do is now what Derrell Coley said God's in control isn't he you can't pick and choose when he is he's either in control or he's now y'all see with me here's a book I want all y'all to go by it's so important to me I'll buy it for everybody if I know y'all will read it it's a book changed my life ty Gibson's and endless falling in love showed me who God really is so let me see the scriptures in a different way I want to read you this quote and I'm gonna get us to this point because y'all I pastor please don't end the sermon fix it fix it we bout to turn the corner ty Gibson says this about God and the chapter that he writes this is called the risk of love here's what he says God is in control in just the way he has chosen to be he is under no obligation to be sovereign in the way we think he ought to be I want to read it one more time to you and I want you to listen to it with everything that we just said in mind God is in control and just the way he has chosen to thee he is under no obligation to be sovereign in the way we think he ought to be let me tell you why it is a fair statement to say that God has failed because God has failed our expectations of God you see the issue with the failures of God are the expectations that we have put on God you see because God is open impotent because he is all-powerful because he's a healer lawyer in the courtroom doctor in the sick room because he is all these things that we read all of this stuff in Scripture the expectation is that he will be that for us when we pray and have faith that's the expectation that that's what he will do because we have treated listen to me carefully prayer and faith like a formula we believe that if you pray enough have enough faith connected with the prayer the problem is going to be solved in other words what we're really saying is God you're not in control we control you because if we faith prayer you'll do what we say we take texts out of context everything is yes and amen and God he'll supply all your need the cornea riches and glory and the needs that we think he'll supply are the ones we think we need so when God fails it's because we have placed an expectation on God to heal this raise this stop this do that and when he does it all of a sudden now we get out of shape and in a tizzy why because we have put finite expectations on an infinite God did you hear me today your greatest expectations will make him low is this making sense to somebody there is no expectation you can put on God because our expectations can't even come close to the same stratosphere of how God operates but what we do is we go through life and we place these things on them and we say god this is what I expect and if you don't do it you have failed and the issue is I gotta tell you this and this is hard to get and you're gonna see how it reconciles in the word you oughta expect nothing in that arena from God because even what you expect God can still blow your mind with that because God is the God of the unexpected and the problem is when you expect a certain thing from God you miss out on the thing he's about to do or is doing or has done how do you know okay here we go this goes in Scripture they go over to Jesus hey Jesus Lazarus is sick we know what you can do you can speak a word and Lazarus will be healed he gets there on his horse he runs back and Lazarus is dead and they're all up in a tizzy why they expected a healing and they were just about missed out on the resurrection see they never even thought to ask him for the resurrection they were only asking for the healing because their expectations we're too slow and here's the thing of our expectations we only put the expectations on God based on what has been precedented y'all Missa C you'll only put the expectations on God from what you've seen here see that's good though because what you've seen here we don't even really see today but see the luster on one of my favorite text in the Bible isaiah 43:18 he says man you were impressed with me opening up the Red Sea you were impressed with manna from heaven he says behold forget all that I'm about to do a new thing I would make a way in though in the wilderness and rivers come up in the desert see our expectations are only based on what he's done before not knowing that we serve a God who can do something that you ain't never seen so how are you going to put an expectation on a God who is exceedingly above anything that you can ask or think that make sense of you say Amen I want to finish the rest of this quote so our problem is we've got wrong expectations and don't confuse faith with expectations faith is trusting in a person not what the person can do faith is trusting in a person and not what they can do because faith still has faith even when they don't do see loudest we don't have faith we've got a results-oriented kind of faith and our results-oriented faith is based on the infinite of the the finite expectations that we have for our God I want to continue this though because you guys say okay God if and if you're in control the way you want to be in control then why are things so out of control can we just keep that real out of control this world is out of control start from the beginning again God is in control and just the way he has chosen to me he is under no obligation to be sovereign in the way we think he ought to be the whole tenor scripture indeed the very fact that God has any living enemies at all informs us that he has chosen to exercise his sovereignty by granting real freedom not shrinking back from the risk inherent in that freedom rather than ruling with the dominating control hello where's God says you know what here's what I got to do my sovereignty in the way I've chosen to rule is I'm not going to dominate your choices I'm going to let you make your own choices even when those own choices cause the world to lose its mind now some of y'all like man why would God do that uh God no control me you want that till he pictures Mouse right the issue is not whether God could control every detail of our lives certainly he could if it were in his heart to do so but therein lies the point it is not in his heart to do so he rather has chosen to create us with the potential for love which requires that we be endowed with actual freedom which unavoidably allows for the risk that we might not choose to love him in return he continues perhaps the most significant non thing God absolutely cannot do is save a person who chooses to be lost this brings us to the real vital issue regarding God's sovereignty namely the sovereignty of the free will he has created adjacent to himself scripture is clear that God desires all to be saved and none to perish and yet the Bible is equally clear that the will of the Almighty God shall not be fulfilled in this manner some free agents will in fact be eternally lost God doesn't want them to be lost but they will be even if God were to concentrate all his power on a single individual he could not save the person without their freewill consent sure God could force the person I need you all to hear this to live forever in heaven he could force the person to live forever in heaven but that wouldn't actually be salvation it would be confining tormenting bondage salvation all help us Jesus God help us to give this salvation it's not mere biological life forever sustained in the geographical location of heaven salvation is complete psycho-emotional deliverance from sin freedom from sins lies about God it's guilt its dominance its physical effects and it's death penalty stated from the positive angle salvation is complete recreation of God's selfless other-centered love in the mental and emotional being and God says if you want that you've got to pick it I can't make you do that salvation restores the truth about God's character of love in understanding restores to our hearts innocence and confidence before God restores to our wills a motivational power to live in harmony with God's law of love and finally restores perfect health and immortality to our bodies yes God could have made a universe in which evil would be impossible but that would be a universe in which love would be impossible as well so he chose the risk of evil over the absence of love he said hey guys if you want love you got to have a choice and if you have a choice you might not choose me and when you don't choose me Adam when you don't choose me Eve there is a door that opens that allows all of this stuff in but if I stopped it from coming in I will break the ability to have free will and love okay my out so what can you expect from God love and here's the thing that's crazy God isn't loving he is love so whatever it is the one thing you can expect is his love you cannot expect to be healed all the time might happen for some might happen for others might not happen for others you cannot expect to be rescued from a certain situation because sometimes what you do if you expect it and he doesn't do it then you get disappointed you doubt it all different kinds of things haven't about to tell you what you can't expect is regardless of what is happening in your life he loves me as crazy as that is his love is actually enough I can't end with that it's a good place to end black hair in with it not just cuz I got some more stuff written down I'm not one of those that has to get through my nails but listen so job in the back of do something that we don't do we'll talk to everybody about gods yeah we talk behind God's back you complaining to your friends and then when you talk to him you got all kinds of holiness and faith Oh Lord about God we will be done man you know God man he just be letting me dip job is different jobs like I'm I'm not gonna front and so job goes off on God and let me tell you God loves it cuz God would rather talk have you talked to him about your doubts in him God would rather curse have you curse him to his face then you not talk to him at all and see the devil's got us into this trick no if you don't have anything nice to say don't say no i'ma tell you this I haven't had some nice things like a to God but he's glad I said it to him cuz God wants the connection he wants the the talk he wants us to know what it is even though he already knows what you feel there's something about us being real with God and so in job 38 as job is just complaining going off to God something incredible happens God talks back cuz I bet we're in this conversation and look what it says in job 38 in verse 1 then the Lord answered job out of the storm I'm sorry I got to stop there for a minute because it's the same Hebrew word which is used for the storm that killed job's kids y'all miss that let me bring a little closer to home God speaks from the storm in other words letting job know that sometimes the best way to hear me is not when it's calm it's not when it's silent but when you're going through something and sometimes what you've got to do in the midst of your storm it's try and quiet everything out and listen to where God is in the storm because he's talking in spite of the rape he's talking in spite of the diagnosis God doesn't speak outside of the situation he speaks in it and sometimes we can't hear him unless we're in the storm sometimes the best place to hear God is not in silence so God talks to Joe y'all mind if I share with this conversation and I can't say it better than God so I'm just gonna read it he's God responding to job's complaints he said who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge he's not gird up your loins like a man and I will ask you and you instruct me see that's God sarcastic God's me sorry say man up do you want to have this conversation we gonna have this conversation we all talk let's talk he says this he says where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth tell me if you have understanding he said so when I laid the foundation of the earth who set its measurements since you know or who stretched the line on it on on what were its basis sunk or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy or who enclose who enclosed the sea with doors when bursting forth it went out from the womb when I made a cloud its garment and thick darkness its swaddling bands and I placed boundaries on it and set a bolt on the doors and I said thus far you shall come but no farther and here shall your proud waves stop yo yeah y'all miss that y'all should be son God was just like look I got a question I put the ocean in order that the waves come up and they only go so far cuz I put a door on that thing that said you will go no farther unless I let you are y'all listening to me oh you thought the way you just came up that far just because it's you know you on the beach and you don't want to get you away cuz I laid the measurements he says man have you ever in your life commanded the morning and cause the dawn to know its place God says I speak and it's in the morning begins to come up I talked to the dawn it begins a knows place that it might take hold of the ends of the earth and the wicked be shaken out of it it has changed like the clay under the seal and they stand forth like a garment from the wicked their light is with health and the uplifted arm is broken have you ever entered into the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep y'all listen there are places in our ocean that even the greatest technology cannot reach and bring back an accurate picture and God is like Joel on a random day I'm just walking through that thing I'm in the recesses of the deep he continues he says have the gates of death been revealed to you or have you seen the gates of deep darkness have you understood the expanse of the earth tell me if you know all this and that's just verse 18 he goes for another chapter and a half now here's what God is showing joke I need y'all follow me because it's always easier to end it God is showing job that he views life from a different perspective and even if he could explain the perspective you can play softly for me now police job you couldn't understand it cuz where I been you can't go so here's what God is saying Joel I need you to see not to embarrass you but if I can do all this that means I see life from a different viewpoint so here's only thing I'm asking for you to do job trust my perspective trust me and the way I see things now that is a hard thing to do you wanna know why God can't show you your life before it happens because if you saw it even though you knew he was in it you probably would want something different you wouldn't be able to go through it but God's perspective understands the role the diagnosis plays in your life God's perspective understands the role the molestation played in your life would he want it no but he didn't want any of this but he says I see it differently than you and so if I did if I stopped theirs but didn't stop yours don't try to understand why trust my perspective and he gives us this one promise one which maybe could have two wrapped up in the one when you come up and we get together on the other side i'ma sit down with you individually and I'm gonna show you why and then I promise you this after you see the why I'm a make up for everything he took from you by giving you an eternity so those years of molestation rape war disease eating at your body will seem like a far memory compared to what I got from you here and so I'm gonna tell you for a selfish reason God you know I want to see you I'll tell you one of reasons I can't miss out on glory I gotta know why and I ain't going through hell twice no no I'm a hab um I'm a have a mansion I'm a have a tree with leaves for the healing of the nation I'm gonna sit at a welcome table cuz I haven't always had a great table to sit at I haven't always been the healthiest I haven't always had everything that I wanted to have but God will give me that and more but I've got to trust his perspective that's my challenge to us yeah I trust him I'm not gonna answer any question I'm a lot of stuff happens to you outside the fact that God respects our free choice so much that he hopes that we are walking so closely with him that when someone exercises their free choice on us it doesn't remove us from him and see when I hear that and I learned that I've got to trust this perspective because there's a time of trouble coming that we have not seen and there's gonna be some stuff happening in our lives that's gonna make what you going through now look like a cakewalk and we've got to be able to trust that God even though I don't feel you even though I don't see you even though it doesn't make sense I trust you and your perspective and that does not happen from listening to a sermon and that does not happen from coming to the wonderful service like this it happens from you learning who he is for yourself every day and expecting him to love you and to trust the perspective he has on your life you
