there's a movie that came out in 20133 directed by Jeremy sonier called Blue Ruin if you haven't seen this movie I highly recommend watching it it is an underrated great Gem of a crime Thriller it's also an especially great looking movie The cinematography is fantastic and the reason I bring up this movie is because it was shot on a C300 Mark 1 with Canon L Series lenses here's the director talking about it doesn't have some of the Highlight roll off as other cameras but what I needed was something I could own and have control over and it that went for lenses too I tested packages that I could own and when it came down to it what I need is speed I need a fast set of lenses that saves time and money and allows me to use more naturalistic lighting and ambient light when available okay this movie is like 11 years old it holds up today looks fantastic and it's on a camera you can get on eBay right now and I'm literally looking at on eBay for $1,300 Canadian which is like 8900 bucks USD and I think about this movie all the time I think about it every single time a new camera comes out and I definitely thought about it when that whole conversation happened with Gareth Edwards and Greg Fraser and Orin sopur with the Creator and the goddamn Sony fx3 and that was never really interesting to me because of a movie like Blue Ruin and that's just one example of a plethora of films that have been shot on consumer cameras or prummer cameras just things that aren't an Ari Alexa or a Sony Venice they are affordable accessible cameras that hit the level of quality that we need for a streamer for theatrical for whatever we want to do to distribute a film and so some news came out about a couple interesting cameras for some new films that are coming out this year one of which is Steven solder BG's new film presence now this was shot on the brand new Sony a93 which has a global shutter but this isn't making waves like that Sony fx3 is it perhaps it's because I don't know soberg isn't as famous or it's not as big of a movie as the Creator there also isn't even a trailer yet for this film so we can't even see what it really looks like but I find this more interesting to me than the fx3 because it fits a purpose from everything I've been able to look up this film is basically a POV film I think he's walking around essentially in a house with a gimbal the a93 and a 14 mm lens on full frame so he wanted a small light package that he could just basically tiptoe around in a house with the POV angle hence the 14mm wide angle lens and again a photo lens just like Jeremy sonier with the C300 and those Canon L series soberg is using photo lenses I love that soberg is using this camera and I think it's even more interesting than perhaps the fx3 because it's very narrowly specifically accomplishing a goal that he had in a set of parameters to tell the story that he wants to tell which is honestly the case with Gareth Edwards and the fx3 the guy came from shooting on like crazy old like Sony like handicam type thing so when you go to shoot a movie and you're going to shoot it yourself you want to be comfortable so it makes sense grab a small camera like an fx3 but I know for a fact that you know Blue Ruin or the Creator or this new movie presence it doesn't look good because of these cameras that they're using it looks good because of what their capturing the camera they chose to use is just making it easier to accomplish that story that they want to tell with Blue Ruin it's having an excellent eye it's knowing Framing and composition it's shooting at the right hours of the day on top of great wardrobe and locations and props and having the right cars all that kind of stuff is why the movie looks so good it doesn't look good because of the C300 mark1 again a camera you can get on eBay right now for 1,300 bucks Canadian which brings us to another movie that's coming out soon which is Alex Garland's Civil War now this one's being shot on a really weird camera that hasn't made too much of a splash yet YouTube seems to like it in a very Niche sense but it's the Ronin 4D now this camera is one of those sort of technical advancements that kind of changes things moving forward for camera because it's essentially combining a Gimbal and a cinema camera into one complete package for me I find the Ronin 4D just a really great ecosystem this is like a one package camera that has your transmission for wireless you know follow focus and stuff like that they got lidar for actual focus autofocusing with even Cinema lenses so I can understand why Alex Garland and DP Rob Hardy chose this camera for civil war here's what Alex Garland had to say about it it does something incredibly useful it self- stabilizes to a level that you control from silky smooth to verit shaky cam to me that is revolutionary in the same way that steady cam was once revolutionary it's a beautiful tool not right for every movie but uniquely right for some and that line right there is how I feel about all cameras and I think it's how you should feel about all cameras not every camera is right for every movie I'm not suggesting that you go shoot your movie with an iPhone or a GoPro I'm suggesting you just find the camera that lets you accomplish The Narrative and story that you wish to tell now maybe that camera is a ronin 40 maybe it's an Alexa maybe it's a red maybe it's a black magic maybe it's a Sony maybe it's a GoPro it doesn't really matter as long as you know the one that's going to have the least amount of barriers between you and the thing that you want to create that is the right camera to shoot for your movie so Hollywood is changing because I think it's great this is the one thing I love about these people using these random cameras now because it means the industry is kind of getting off their high horse this idea that you have to have an Alexa or a Sony Venice you have to have these Prestige cameras to make Prestige content that's definitely a thing that's been a problem in the industry that we just assume that we need the best of the best to make good things that's definitely changing and I love that there's filmmakers like Alex Garden Steven sterber all these guys out there that are willing to experiment and try things that are cheap try things that are small even Gareth Edwards using the fx3 that part is fantastic but I like to make videos like this to remind you that it's not the reason why the thing that they're making looks so damn good it's cuz they know what they're doing and they know how to capture great images you could give them an iPhone sobus shot plenty of movies with iPhones that look fantastic sensors are just so fantastic now we're so lucky I love that this is the world that we live in I love that Hollywood is opening up to using all this fantastic technology that Us on YouTube have been playing with for a long time now one sec my doggo is making a bunch of noise back here I'm going to bring him on camera yeah I think that's the end of this rant beef says hello got any questions comments let's chat about in in the comments if you got any what questions
