most people know a lot about the pyramids but not so much the Sphinx just for some background this Vince is the oldest monolith in the world and one of the oldest structures in Egypt it was also more ancient to the Romans than the Romans are to us and we still aren't sure who created it in fact it was discovered already buried by Pharaoh Thutmose the 4th a lot of this research was based on Egyptologist Salima Hasan so a lot of quotes are gonna be used from his hundred-year-old journals let's get started if you're not a bird living in Egypt then you probably haven't noticed the hole in the head of the Sphinx it was first noted by Charles Thompson in 1733 and he wrote we could not get up to the top of the head but those that have done it report that there is a round hole by which a full-grown person may descend into it Napoleon's expedition also made note of the large hole in the head ten feet deep and filled with sand in 1925 Emile Barr eyes fully unearth the body of the stinks and erected walls to keep the sand at bay in order to prevent erosion Burr eyes sealed the mysterious hole in the head with an iron door he also sealed a secret tunnel in the back which we will get to in 1991 mark Lehner under the supervision of minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass opened the door to the head and theorized that the hole must have been carved in order to a fix an MS Hawass agreed with laners headdress theory having found fragments of what he believed to be the Nemus inside parings hole this set in stone theory was not set in stone however as many similar monuments include the NEM a as a solid piece for some context on this whole in 1840 a guy named John pairing and I'm quoting Hasan here in an attempt to reach a supposed hidden chamber used gunpowder to bore a 27-foot hole just behind the head of the Sphinx this senseless and criminal action was nicknamed parings hole in 1798 Napoleon's expedition were supposed to have made a considerable excavation in front of the Sphinx and had discovered a door just at the very moment when they were compelled to suspend their operations Hassan doesn't explain why they had to suspend their operations I'm not sure what arose and I haven't read napoleon's journals giovanni Cavalia began his ex in 1816 fueled by rumors of a chamber beneath the Sphinx he experienced great difficulty as well as danger to the lives of the workers and himself by reasons of the loose sand which constantly threatened to pour into the trench and bury them all but by means of planks of wood he was able to hold back the sand sufficiently to enable him to reach down to the base of the statue when his work was done he had uncovered a limestone Stila of Aransas ii as well as a small temple between the paws by the end of Cavill his work he had unearthed the monument down to the chest in 1853 Auguste Mariette or Mariette sorry if I'm butchering the French language the founder of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities began examining the Sphinx after battling the constant sands as well he lost patience and went to explore the Khafre valley temple not returning for a full five years Mariette also shared the general opinion that there was a hidden chamber concealed in or under the Sphinx during excavations some of the local inhabitants who claimed to have been present during Napoleon's expedition told Mariette that they had seen a door which they said led into the body of the Sphinx others went one better and said that it led up to the second pyramid exclamation point enter Gaston must burrow in 1880 his interest in the Sphinx was first to provide the spectacle of the Sphinx revealed to the antiquities department and to tourists his second reason was the influence of the locals who believed the monument contained the tomb of King har MCUs the Arab writers were also convinced that the Sphinx covered a subterranean chamber which they expected to find full of treasure Maas bro argued that perhaps one might recognize a grain of truth and the tradition related by Pliny and the Arab writers mas burro wasn't blindly following rumors though Hasan explains his theory the monuments upon which the Great Sphinx is figured show the statue cogent upon a pedestal as high as the statue itself he states that the Egyptian artists would not neglect to include a subterranean chamber from mere Caprice and theorizes that if this Sphinx was represented as Cochin upon a pedestal it very probably was so if we admit the existence of a pedestal the story related by Pliny would not be impossible and the two might exist not in the body of the Sphinx itself but in the rectangular mass upon which it is couched if the Sphinx itself was repeatedly buried by the sand how much more rapid would be the burial of its pedestal perhaps it had not been visible since the time of Khafre it had certainly been forgotten by the time of off miss the fourth and he did not descend lower than the level of the pause if it had a pedestal in which tombs were cut they must have been buried at such a remote time perhaps before the erection of the pyramids that some of them might have escaped pillage whereas marry yet denied the fact that the Sphinx rests upon a pedestal in the manner in which is often shown upon the steel a moss burrow believed the depictions in the dream and rams us ii steal a indicate otherwise maas borough proceeded to and struggled to obtain funding with the intention to experiment with the trenches in order to see if the pedestal existed or not adding that the excavation would give all europe the chance to share and the honor of the discovery with his new planet to dig trenches alongside the body of the sphinx he predicted if one encounters only rock this hypothesis is false and one is limited to bringing to light one of the most astonishing works of antiquity if on the contrary one encounters sand at a depth of about eight or ten meters below the level of the pause the pedestal exists and who knows what one may hope to find the following as well as the people of cairo refused and still do refuse to believe that the excavations were carried merely for the sake of science twenty stories of hidden treasure originated by the old arab writers were revived according to the most authentic account mas bro was searching for the cup of Solomon the son of David which was buried under the Sphinx this cup was said to have been cut from a single ox of great size and possessed peculiar properties when liquid was poured into it it at once began to spin around and if it turned from right to left it was a sign of prosperity but if the liquid turned from left to right it was an omen of calamity it was not explained how the cup of Solomon came to be hidden under the Sphinx anyhow the ax freaks were playing a bad joke on poram aspre and he never found this mysterious and most useful cup shortly after beginning work mas burro was summoned to Upper Egypt by the Ministry of Antiquities and as excavation duties were passed to brush bay they did his work well but after 15 days he became impatient and moved the work to beneath the chin at the Sphinx results were quickly forthcoming and most of what Cathay glia had seen the Stila of Thoth Emes the fourth and the little temple between the paws of the Sphinx were again laid bare upon return mas burrows last act was the purchase of larger more efficient carts for hauling away sand which he regretted not using from the start nearing the end of his timeline for the excavation his primary duty mas Road did not get the chance to begin digging his trenches Hasan notes that it is unfortunate that it was not until the very end of his administration that he hit upon a sound mode of procedure his predecessor grew up out abandoned the excavation soon after the primary caused a day of speculation and intrigue regarding what may lie beneath the Sphinx is due in large part to the mystic Edgar Cayce born 1877 his most notable predictions include the stock market crash and the Second World War while some of his more questionable claims involved extraterrestrials giants and Atlantis in 1935 he warned of growing animosities of the Nazi Party adding Austrians Germans and later the Japanese will join in their influence the whole world as it were will be set on fire by the militaristic groups regarding Egypt Cayce predicted a Hall of Records left behind by the Atlanteans after the fall of their civilization beneath the Sphinx written records placards and drawings tombs of the arts of the day were preserved in underground chambers at Giza and the Sphinx performing the function of the entrance to these passages accessibility to these artifacts can be gained by way of the right Paul he described the location of the records being from the chambers of the way between the Sphinx and the Pyramid of records case also makes mention of an empty sarcophagus never intended to hold a mummy but was a symbol that death is physical and not spiritual today case lives on - the Association for research and enlightenment ar e in 1977 dolphin took part in a research project funded by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and a re to apply ground-penetrating radar techniques to explore beneath the Giza Plateau essentially using echolocation as dolphins are wont to do dolphin believed if anything interesting beneath the Sphinx exists it is likely to be a shaft or a cavity probably now filled the team set up their acoustic equipment and recorded measurements stating several anomalies were to observe to initial traverses measurements were taken behind the rear pause both traverses indicate a small anomaly that could possibly be due to a tunnel aligned northwest to southeast another anomaly exists in the middle of the south side near square Coppola added apparently in Roman times when the electrodes were moved two meters away from the previous Traverse the anomaly decreased in value this is typical of the behavior expected from a vertical shaft there are two anomalies in front of the front paws of the Sphinx suggesting a cavity or shaft as much as 10 meters deep noting five total findings dolphin theorized one of which could be a shaft another a tunnel laner second find was a square hole previously hidden by sand in the back left of the Sphinx there's a square shaft cut in the floor of the Sphinx sanctuary just opposite the north hind Paul he named this 12 meter deep discovery the keystone shaft in laners words the shaft is probably an unfinished tomb this feature may have been overlooked by previous excavators when s Biff he planned to open the door to the Keystone shaft Zahi Hawass replied no I am NOT going to open it we have other things really to do Hawass also mentions rumors from the local villages of a passage to the rear of the Sphinx concealed by stone after removing the blocks he found a 50-foot tunnel this is the tunnel that emile baraize sealed up so long ago additional ground penetrating radar tests were conducted in 1978 by Robert Koch and again in 1987 by Waseda University of Japan shoat wrote in his report in conclusion only natural anomalies Falls and cavities were found to this day I remain skeptical about the existence of any rooms cavities tunnels or voids under the Sphinx but he ruble packed or water filled rooms could possibly escape detection a re was not the only high-profile and controversial figure present on these projects dr. Zahi Hawass head of the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and a man whose archeology career has been described as a rise to power by the New York Times was overseeing the operation and he ordered Scioscia's site shut down Hawass justified the decision by stating I have found that their work is carried out by installing endoscope in the sinks his body and shooting film for all phases of work in a propaganda but not in a scientific manner when accused of obstructing archaeological research Hawass responded by calling critics and fringe theorists pyrimidines yo so kicked Beyonce off of a tour for being rude I'm not gonna get too into this first part but there were these photographers who found a shaft and Zahi Hawass pretty much stole that discovery from them they didn't report it because their archaeology permit was expired they only had a photography one in 1945 Salim Hassan made the largest and most important discovery yet a tomb three chambers deep and flooded with water located midway between the Sphinx in the second pyramid must bro was aware of this as the local village children would frequently swim in the hole one of his own children is even rumoured to have drowned in these chambers and it's included on his maps Salim Hassan also explored the tomb noting several burial chambers in each of which is a sarcophagus two of the sarcophagi which are a basalt and are monolithic are so enormous that at first we wondered if they contain the bodies of sacred bulls Hassan's exploration was limited to the first two levels adding that the next room was visible through the water and for four years he tried in vain to drain that last chamber Hawass was tipped off by guards reportedly swimming in and drinking the crystal-clear waters of what they believed to be an insignificant hole he also heard rumors that there were tunnels leading from the shaft that connected with the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx in 1999 a team of divers was sent to explore the now fully flooded chambers they discovered nothing on the first level likely due to Hassan's prior visit on second level they discovered six smaller chambers for sarcophagi and various artifacts such as pottery and human bones the chambers were finally drained and Hawass found a black granite sarcophagus weighing 11 to 12 tons surrounded by pillars he writes the Osiris shaft in my opinion can be identified with the underground tomb surrounded by water brought by a canal that was mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus who visited Egypt in the fifth century due to a layout similar to other tombs dedicated to Osiris as well as the finding of several Osiris amulets Hawass concluded it is my contention that this shaft complex is a dummy tomb for the god Osiris as Edgar Cayce prophesized before the year 2000 a hollow tomb was indeed discovered right between the Sphinx and the second pyramid the last unexplored section of the tomb was a tunnel facing east towards the Sphinx a child was sent to investigate further but it became too narrow to past a TV crew asked COAS about his feelings towards the case prophecy and in his own words here as his answer I hate the American prophet and your Casey talked years and years ago about a lost civilization hidden tunnels that would lead to answers about it because this had anything to do with that you you know Susie Casey Edgar Cayce and lost the civilization installation it's a myth the Arabs in the last century they talked about all of this and sidekick brought us back but to be here I did not excavated this tunnel yet then really I don't know when it leads up but I always say that you never know what the sin and the penance of Egypt may hide in the following years the US government began investigating colossus connection to the National Geographic Society suspecting him of providing special access to historical sites in exchange for under-the-table payments meanwhile he began hosting his own television show he could apparently smell a camera from a thousand feet away and had started a clothing line under his own name his best seller was his look-alike Indiana Jones fedora which he claimed he made more fame the film's did backlash quickly followed as he was criticized for commercializing Egyptian history as well as using ancient artifacts as a backdrop for a photoshoot the company claims the artifacts were either replicas or edited in and that all profits go to a children's cancer charity most recently Hawass earned a growing disdain among many Egyptians for his closeness to the then president dictator Hosni Mubarak and was later tried for the suspected theft of some missing artifacts following the Egyptian revolution in 2011 he was removed from his post the most powerful archaeology position in the world in recent years he's become more active again writing books and hosting tours Hawass began his career fighting to maintain egypt's all-important tourism economy post 9/11 and fears of traveling to the Middle East were widespread hey thanks for watching for more information on what's under the sphinx look up Kovac Lea and Henry salt or read the wiki on the Hall of Records if you enjoyed the
