hey guys how's it going welcome back to the channel my name is jonathan and in today's video i'm going to be talking about the different apps that i use on my ipad so right now i'm using a 2018 ipad pro i also have the smart keyboard and the apple pencil and i kind of want to talk about the different apps that i use as a phd student and so i thought it'd be cool to kind of show you guys the different apps that i use and there's a couple of them that i particularly use as a phd student so right off the bat i have my ipad right here and let's get started as you can see the home screen it is a blank canvas i don't like having widgets or icons on my ipad screen just because it looks really minimal right now and it just feels a lot more comfortable it's kind of like on my desktop where i don't have any icons on my computer either but all the apps that i use are right now on the bottom row and other than the first four apps which i use pretty frequently everything else is kind of bucketed into these five groups based on their functionality so i'm gonna go through each one of these apps and kind of talk about what i use them for so the first one is youtube studio so this is a really great tool if you're a creator it gives you a lot of stats on you know the number of subscribers that you have the different types of videos you put out and the stats for each video obviously as a small youtuber there's not much interesting things here but it's always cool to see how you're doing so youtube studio is a great app and then obviously youtube pretty self-explanatory i do watch a lot of youtube don't really watch traditional tv anymore so youtube is my main video consumption app and then safari and the app store are pretty self-explanatory so i'm going to talk about the first group of apps so this is social networking so pretty much anything that has to do with social media is in this bucket spend a lot of time on reddit facebook discord signal messages whatsapp chat uh what's patchat facetime and messenger pretty much use them just to communicate with other people and then webex and zoom are going to be for my lectures and any meetings that i have with some professors now the next collection of apps is productivity so pretty much anything that has to do with work is going to be in this folder and you can see i do have a lot of microsoft office apps as well as some of the google online apps like google docs slides and sheets in case i have to open up a file or work with someone online in class it's all here so it's all pretty flexible and then the first app that i use particularly as a phd student is going to be zotero and then zotero is a reference manager app and what that means is if you're reading a lot of papers one of the biggest things you have to do is you have to create a bibliography that shows like the author name the publication year name of the paper journal that it was published in and that can get very tiresome and annoying to do all the time so what's great about zotero is that if you have a pdf of the paper you can just put that pdf into zotero and zotero will automatically keep track of that information so when you have to make a citation or create a bibliography microsoft word all that is automatically done for you through zotero so right now i use zotero to pretty much house all my papers so you can see on the left hand side i have a bunch of folders each one representing a different topic area within accounting research and if i just open up one of them so the expected credit loss model you can see that on the right hand side i have a number of pdfs here and each one is a particular paper and if i just tap on one of them it might take a second but zotero will open that document up for me and now you can see that i have the paper right here and you can already see that i made some annotations inside so what's great about zotero is that you can make annotations on the paper directly in zotero you can see at the top here that there are some tools for example you can leave comments there's a pen a freehold tool and then you can change the color as well for highlighting there aren't a lot of tools within the zotero app so i definitely don't use zotero as my main app to annotate my papers and what's great about zotero is that the thing that you see on the ipad is synced with your desktop so what i would do is that i get all my papers online using the computer i'll put them into zotero and then i'll open them up on my ipad and read them on my ipad so everything is synced across devices which is absolutely great but yeah i definitely recommend zotero if you do read a lot of papers and you have to keep track of them and the next app that i use actually this is probably the app that i use most frequently on the ipad is pdf expert and that's because i read all my papers on my ipad i don't do physical papers anymore just because it's a burden to print them all out keep track of them and each of these papers can be like maybe it's like 30 almost 40 pages long so it just makes sense to have them all in electronic form as you can see here in my recent files a bunch of papers with a bunch of annotations and one of the great things i like about pdf expert is that it syncs directly to the file management system that you use on your laptop so on my laptop i use onedrive for all my schoolwork and if i just click on the icon here it shows me directly all the folders that i have in my onedrive so i can open up pdfs in my onedrive into pdf exchange and then i can make my annotations and once i save them it saves directly into onedrive so for example i have this folder called zotero pdfs so that's where i can take all the papers in my zotero folder and then open them up on my ipad so the paper that i was just reading right now is this one i actually have an assignment on this i'm just going to close that close that okay so it's called is mandated independence necessary for audio quality and you can see i already made some annotations on it i made some notes on the side and so pretty much anything that i do here will save directly into onedrive and then when i go back to my zotero app i can actually upload this new version into zotero directly with the original version and then zotero will also extract my annotations into a separate file and that separate file will essentially be my notes for the paper so then i don't have to like go through the trouble of handwriting or retyping a set of notes when zotero and pdf expert can automatically take all the annotations that i made here and turn that into a set of notes which is really convenient and so pdf expert has been really great for me i only started using it this christmas because i was a little hesitant on paying the subscription fee beforehand it was 50 off during the holiday so i decided to take the dive it was around 15 or 20 i believe i personally think that it's well worth the cost because it's so easy to use it syncs with your file management system there's so many tools that you can use within pdf expert you can already see you can do text boxes you can change the colors you can change the thickness of the pen there's even something called persistent tip sensitivity and variable tip sensitivity you can drop comments you can highlight the text directly from the pdf so you don't have to retype them out so it's just a very versatile tool and if something adds that much value to your day-to-day work life then i think it's fine paying some sort of nominal fee so obviously for the full year if it's around 20 that's definitely something that i can swallow and i'm more than happy to pay if it makes my life a lot easier so pdf expert definitely recommend to any student who deals with a lot of documents now i talked about how i use onedrive as my main file management system and what's great about it is that if you're a canadian university student the university actually gives you a copy of microsoft office and one terabyte of storage on onedrive for free well maybe not for free it's baked into your tuition cost one terabyte is a lot of space and you can definitely save all the work that you will do in school whether that's four years of undergrad or in my case five years of my phd all through onedrive and obviously the benefit of having everything on the cloud is that it's just convenient and you can access those files anywhere you want regardless of the device you use so since obviously i live in oakville but i go to school in waterloo and i sometimes spend my days in toronto it's just much easier to have everything on the cloud and in case i do lose one of my devices i don't risk losing uh my notes and my work which is arguably more important than a device that can easily be replaced gmail pretty self-explanatory my personal email is through gmail and then outlook is the email system that we use through school so whenever i have any school appointments or emails it's all through outlook next is entertainment um you've probably seen most of these apps i do watch a lot of tv whenever i get a chance to take a break so crave i've actually been watching something called yellowjackets do recommend it disney plus i haven't renewed that in a while in terms of netflix there has been a couple of great shows that i saw recently the silent sea saw over the holiday break i thought that was really cool um cbc jam there are some good shows on cbc gym one i just saw was called sort of definitely recommend that and then for prime video i've recently been watching the expanse which is a sci-fi show and i've been really into that twitch i don't watch as much twitch as i used to when i was in undergrad and then finally for spotify i actually don't listen to a lot of music but i usually use spotify for podcasts and then i do have a photography folder but this is more my youtube folder so as a small youtuber there are some apps through the app store that are really helpful to help you get your youtube channel running and going so the first one is procreate i'm sure a lot of you guys heard about it and i primarily use it for my thumbnails so what i would typically do is take a photo and then i'll just use procreate to draw that basic white outline of the main subject in the thumbnail which is usually me and that's pretty much the extent of how i use pro uh how i use procreate definitely not a advanced user of the software but in terms of making thumbnails i think it's really good fonto is the app that i use to add text to the thumbnail so all you have to do is upload the photo that i just created in procreate and then in fonto i can add the font change the color of the font change the transparency of the font so that's really good and fonto is also a free app and then last one is lumafusion i've used lumifusion to edit a few videos on my ipad but i've gotten a lot more comfortable editing on my laptop using davinci resolve but it's kind of nice just to have a backup video editing software in case i don't have my laptop on me and lumafusion has been a really versatile really easy to use software so definitely recommend it if you plan to do uh video editing on your ipad it is a bit pricey i think it's around 35 or 40 dollars but you're getting a full editing software here and then last but not least i have some random apps in my utilities folder so the one i'll talk about is probably unsplashed so unsplash is an app that has a lot of great photos and i usually use these photos for my wallpapers but as you can see here really high quality resolutions they have photos about pretty much anything and these photos are all uploaded by members of the community so definitely recommend this app if you guys like to change your wallpaper pretty frequently and you don't want to go through the problem uh finding it on google then downloading the photo and then putting it as a wallpaper everything you have is right here and with that being said those are the apps that i use on my ipad in terms of accessories i did talk about how i use the apple pencil which is right here really great tool to use if you do some handwritten notes even when you're annotating your research papers and all you really do is highlighting and making some comments on the side i still think that this is definitely the go-to device if you want to write on your ipad and then in terms of the keyboard i have the 11 inch smart keyboard here so as you can see it's not the magic keyboard but i think this keyboard is a lot better than the magic keyboard for a couple of reasons number one it's so much lighter and it doesn't feel like a burden to carry this around in my backpack number two i can fully use the ipad as a two-in-one device so if i want to use the keyboard i can plop it out like this and there are only certain situations where i do use the keyboard heavily for example if i'm annotating a paper that's really old and the pdf software doesn't pick up the words as like a highlightable text then i will have to use the keyboard to type out my notes or if i'm doing some like typing like answering emails or answering to youtube comments i'll use the keyboard but anything that's heavy duty like typing an essay creating presentations and things like that i'll just use my laptop so in certain new situations where i do need to type a lot it's great to have the keyboard flexibility and then the second great thing is that i can fold the keyboard back and then use a tablet as a tablet and this is very comfortable to hold with that being said i hope you guys found that video interesting i do think that the ipad is a great supplementary device to your laptop especially if you're a phd student and you do read a lot of papers i won't necessarily go for the pro model i do think a basic ipad with the pen is good enough just because you're not going to do any heavy duty tasks that requires a lot of computing power but if you do have the budget definitely go for a tablet because i think it will make your life a lot easier as a student so if you guys enjoyed this video then please consider subscribing to the channel and hit that thumbs up button it definitely helps out a small youtuber like myself and if you like watching phd content then i definitely have more coming down the pipeline i'll see you guys in the next video peace
