lives are adventurous it's adventurous uh and so we're in week four friends we're in week four of this series called radiant we're looking through the book of philippians we heard from mike schnepp week one we heard from sean haggerty our ministries pastor week two and we heard from the incredible nancy silva week three are you thankful for nancy what a word that was what a powerful word and so as we hit the end of this series radiant looking to what leads to a life of joy open your bibles to philippians chapter four i'm gonna read starting in verse one i'm gonna read one verse and then we'll get going here philippians chapter four verse one it says therefore my brothers and sisters you whom i love and long for my joy and my crown stand firm in the lord in this way dear friends stand firm in the lord in this way if you're taking notes today the title of my message is what your world needs now what your world needs now would you pray with me god in heaven we take a moment we thank you for your word we thank you for the living and active word of god we thank you that it's sharper than a two-edged sword god so as we look at it we pray that it would um impact us today in an incredible way god we open up our hearts to you we say speak to us like only you can in jesus name amen amen so a number of years ago friends i had this incredible privilege of taking my wife to meet some friends of ours in hawaii and so our friends ben and ruthanne they grew up in connecticut uh they ended up moving to northern california and uh living in california they had a friend of theirs that had a house and so the house got offered to them uh in hawaii and so they said hey come with us to hawaii and so we went to kona hawaii for 10 days with them full out of california and then flew to hawaii and i'll tell you if you've ever been there some of the most incredible beautiful beaches volcanoes oceans that you could see i mean what an incredible trip what an incredible privilege be able to do that and so one day we went to this place and i want to pronounce it correctly uh i think it's called papakolea beach papakolea beach we actually have a picture if you guys want to throw that photo up there and so we took a couple hour jeep tour out to this this spot this beach out in kona hawaii and what they call this is they call this a green sanded beach i didn't even know there was a beach with green sand but there's actually i guess there's four in the whole world beaches that have green sand and so we went out to this beach we spent the day there and the waves were pretty aggressive um but it looked a lot of fun and so we go down we climbed down the the mountain and you know into kind of where the waves were into the beach and uh and and we attempt to begin to just kind of hang out in the water now uh ruth ann if you if you know anything about her she's not the most confident swimmer and so she was a little nervous but her husband said ah babe you'll be fine like just jump in it's gonna be okay so she very carefully began to wade back into into the water into the waves and all of a sudden in a moment a big wave came knocked her over she tumbled a couple times she got up she was very nervous but she was fine but she you know she got knocked over by one of these waves and then all of a sudden this was this was pretty interesting all of a sudden all you see floating next to her was her wig her wing had come off and so her husband is over here hysterically laughing god bless you ben and then you have ruthanne saying my hair my hair ben get my hair and so he grabs it and she goes i definitely need to get a new one and he goes hey babe we're gonna dry this one off and you're gonna wear this one and it was crazy she was you know in a in literally in a moment in a moment she was completely pushed over by the waves uh that day in hawaii she was unable to stand in the midst of the waves that were coming at her and i wonder if you have ever felt like that in life i mean maybe in life or maybe even just over the last 18 months have you ever found yourself thinking that you're standing firm but then in some way you are completely pushed over over the last 18 months specifically right our lives every one of us our lives were altered in some way shape or form and so it could have been the loss of a job or maybe the job that you had changed dramatically it could be it could have been the loss of friendships or relationships that you thought were so intact relationships that you thought were so sure and then overnight those relationships changed it could have been that maybe you just felt that time was lost like precious things like time you just lost you lost 18 months of time that in-person authentic church relationship experience that was lost that life in many many ways for all of us was completely shaken up that at times i felt like loss and instability were surrounding me at every turn now it does reveal a lot about us it reveals a lot about people when we look at what we lean on right what we stand on and and i would say i would say honestly it had an effect on all of us whether we realized it or not you know two weeks ago on july 11th i celebrated my 40th birthday yeah come on somebody i'm with you if you're 40 if you're in the 40s i'm with you and so in middletown on sunday morning my wife hijacked service she came on stage uh she she brought me balloons and then my mother-in-law made me a couple cakes and so middletown celebrated with cake on july 11th for my birthday and it was a great great great service and then as i'm driving home not really knowing what the day looked like i drove up to my home and i saw about 20 of my extended family members standing at the front of my driveway my family members from new jersey that i hadn't seen much over the last year and a half and so i pull onto my my grass i get out i hug my wife and i begin to cry now if you know anything about me i am a crier i am a crier but i found myself honestly crying a little bit more than i probably thought i should be i'm holding my wife going i'm actually thinking to myself like why am i crying so much right now and then i had this moment of realization that these people that i loved my family my extended family these people that i loved i had not seen maybe more than once in 18 months and so it's okay to admit that in some way shape or form we all got pushed around this past year that what we actually thought at times what what we thought was stable in our lives was actually not as stable as we thought that the entire world around us seemed unstable and so then we begin to wonder as people like what am i actually standing on you know paul here in philippians uh chapter 4 verse 1 he tells us to stand firm in the lord he tells us to stand firm in the lord now that word stand means to make firm to establish to be kept intact or to uphold and so if we're honest today as we just kind of unpack the scripture if we're honest we often look to things beyond god to keep us standing firm we often look to things besides god to keep us up to keep us put together to keep us intact we look to friendships or relationships we look to our businesses or our careers or different strivings we look to sexual conquests we look to getting married that marriage date that wedding date that that that that um uh baby coming getting pregnant we look to those sorts of things we we look to that evening drink to keep us intact at times we look to the approvals of others and a variety of other things and i wonder for you today what is currently holding you up all of our locations think about it for a moment what is currently holding you up maybe you feel like you're barely standing like have you been one in the last maybe weeks or months said to someone i feel like i am barely making it and so the question i want to answer this morning church as we unpack a little bit of philippians 4. the question i want to answer is how do we become a people how do we become a church that stands firm in the lord that in every circumstance of life that as things come at us we stand firm in the lord now as we get into the context and we've hit this a little bit if you've been around but what's happening is you have paul the apostle paul writing to the church in philippi right now he's writing from what what people would say is a roman prison so he's in a roman prison chained to a roman soldier writing a letter to the church in philippi so pretty much what what's happening is he is he's having someone else write this he's dictating as someone's writing it for him so he can send an encouraging letter to stand firm in god as he's chained to a roman guard in rome i mean come on now he's writing to believers he's writing to people that have professed faith in christ they've begun well they've journeyed well they've maybe struggled in some ways for the gospel but now they're beginning to have some second thoughts there's people around them that are attempting to disrupt their christian walk and so here we have paul literally giving us some basic instruction i'll tell you friends maybe i don't know about you but at times i need some basic instruction right paul's literally giving us some basic instruction and then the benefits of standing firm in the lord in god and his longing is that we would do just that and so we'll start in verse 4 it'll be on the screen behind me and below me it says rejoice in the lord always i will say it again rejoice rejoice in the lord always i will say it again rejoice now this seems like a pretty simple statement maybe honestly even overlooked right but what we have is we have this theme of joy that is central in this letter to the church in philippi mentions it at least 11 times but see this is not just an encouraging idea paul is not saying hey i'm going to encourage you to rejoice this is actually a good idea no he's saying hey i want to command you as believers in jesus to be people that rejoice he says hey it's not just a good idea it's not just helpful it's actually necessary for you as a follower of jesus to learn the art of rejoicing it's so important that he actually says it twice right he says it two times in this one little verse and he says don't just have joy but have joy in the lord have joy in the lord rejoice in the lord now why does he say that why does he say that to us well maybe it's because our human nature is to look for joy in so many other things we constantly as humans look to joy look for joy in so many things that at the end of the day disappoint think about that for a second the last year maybe three years maybe even five years think about the last number of years of your life and anything in your life that you have really placed your joy in that at the end of the day you were let down like you took all your eggs and put them in this one basket and then at the end of the day those eggs ended up spoiling even things right now like what are things right now in your life that you place joy in that is beyond god right maybe it's maybe it's self or personal achievement maybe it's relationships or other people i'm placing my joy in others i'm looking for joy in others around me maybe it's activities maybe you're one of those guys that has like 15 hobbies somebody say you gotta get rid of some of those maybe maybe you're putting your joy in your career or your business or maybe you're putting your joy in looking for comfort in every corner i know it's very easy in the time that we've lived in to look for comfort and so what are you placing your joy in right now because paul would say that instead of the various things that disappoint we must learn to be a people that rejoice in the lord and do it all the time always at every turn at every moment at every circumstance see we can't be a people that wait to feel joy right we can't like we can't go okay i'll have joy once i can feel it because if we wait we will always be disappointed we cannot be people that wait for the circumstances to align to have joy because again they will never always align right but we must adopt a mindset in our new england kind of complainy frustrated pessimistic culture that my greatest joy is found in jesus that my greatest joy i must choose to rejoice and find my greatest joy in christ what he did for me his death on a cross for me for you the payment of sin for you the promise of the resurrection the cleansing of your conscience right we must look to him we must sing to him we must rejoice in him we must find our life and our purpose in him we must know that we're his children and we must know that he's for us one theologian says it perfectly here it'll be on the screen it says for if the christian believes that his life and all its circumstances are in the hands of a sovereign wise and loving god who's always working to accomplish good for him then he can indeed always rejoice or rejoice always he can indeed rejoice always never forget i've been battling crohn's disease for two decades so if you don't think about crohn's it's not always fun when a flare is happening and so i was having a pretty bad flare probably the worst of my life probably six years ago now at this point and i'm under 115 pounds it was a struggle friends to get out of bed um to get dressed shower and get dressed in the morning it was a battle it was a battle to eat i knew i needed to eat because they needed to put on weight but it was it was mentally physically and emotionally hard to get up and eat and i'll never forget i got myself in the shower one day and you know i'm i'm very frail very weak and i have this moment where the lord reminds me of this message i had heard out of hebrews chapter 12 that talks about the disciplines of life and the connection there is to sonship or being a son or a daughter of god and so i remember being in the shower remembering this talk that i had heard and just having this moment where god whispered to my heart he goes ryan please do not forget you are my son and so i find myself i'm literally standing in the shower i'm now crying again right so here we are i'm crying going i'm a son i'm a son and it was a moment of revelation for me honestly because when you know god is for you when you know he's with you you can rejoice despite what comes at you like i knew despite what whatever would happen that i was going to be all right and so here we have the first thing paul instructs us to do to become a people that stand firm is you must make jesus the first place you look for happiness you must make jesus the first place you look for happiness now obviously it's not bad to rejoice in a variety of things but when we make jesus the first place we look to for happiness he makes us steady let's keep going what does it say in verse 5 it says let your gentleness be evident to all the lord is near that's kind of a weird verse let your gentleness be evident to all the lord is near see as the winds and the waves come at you as you review what you lean on right what you as you think through that first place you go to for happiness what follows is how then do you deal with the people around you how are you seen by the people around you another translation of verse 5 says let your reasonableness be known to all and so my question is are you known as a reasonable person to those around you are you known as reasonable like not kooky right not off the charts not constantly swayed back and forth but steady think for a second about your life think about those moments where maybe you're not as gentle or as reasonable as you would like to be and what causes you to be like that what causes you to be like that see what we have here is paul's making a direct connection between how we live towards those around us and our stability in god i want you to catch it this is very important paul's making a connection here right he's saying that the way you live your life to those around you is evidence of an inner stability in god right the way you treat others the way you treat other people is directly connected to your stability in life and in jesus and so this is not friends just towards the person that you love towards family or the person your person that you like but this is towards the person that you may completely disagree with this is towards the person that sees the world the complete opposite of the way you do this is towards the person that right now they're making life choices that you completely disagree with and so how we live towards those around us does show something it shows something how we live towards those that live around us shows that at the end of the day it shows who we believe has the final word in our lives see scripture talks time and time again about the lord being the one that fights for us that he goes to battle on our behalf and so how you live to the world around you shows who you believe fights your battles for you right that the lord is the one with the final word and so as we live in a world with a culture obsessed with having the final word right paul tells us the key the key to knowing who has the final word like how can we begin to trust god that he is the one that has the final word and paul tells us he said know that the lord is near very simple know that the lord is near what a powerful truth that is that god is near another translation that says the lord is at hand he's within reach he's not far off now this is explained in two different ways theologians explain this in two ways they say in one hand he's near by his spirit and so right now if you said yes to christ if you placed your faith in jesus that means the holy spirit the same spirit that raised jesus christ from the dead lives on the inside of you he's taken up residence on the inside of you right and when that happens when we know that he's within that he lives on the inside of us right that he's the one that now begins to call the shots we actually begin to see the world completely different i love what acts 17 says it says for in him we live and move and have our being it's in him that we do that i love what psalm 145 says it says the lord is near to all who call on him and so friends we must know that he's near to us by his spirit that he's close that he's even right now that he's here whatever room that you find yourself in even in your living room right now that the lord is near he's with you he's there but then on the other side of that there's more there's actually a promise in scripture that the lord will actually also physically return that he will come close again physically that that that the lord being at hand speaks to the reality that one day he will come and make all the wrong things right again that his return to the earth is near that when that happens he'll settle every wrong and that we are meant to live with an awareness of that soon return and that you can become someone that stands firm in god because you know that he's near that he's close i love in acts chapter one this is right after so jesus is resurrected he hangs out for a few days and then right as he begins to ascend into heaven he's ascending the disciples are like what is happening right they're watching this happen the angels show up the angels address jesus followers and they say this in acts chapter one they say hey friends what are you looking at what what are you looking at this same jesus they say who has been taken from you into heaven will come back in the same way you have seen him go and so here we have the second thing that paul instructs us to do to become someone who stands firm is we must develop your awareness of god's nearness you must develop your awareness of god's nearness question for you do you sense god is near do you live with a confident assurance that he's near that because of his nearness he'll help you live towards others around you in a certain way verse six verse six do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your request to god so again we have these series of instructions right so this is the third instruction that we see paul begin to unpack for us what does he say he says do not be anxious about anything anything wait wait like do not be anxious about anything like if if you're me i almost am offended by that statement like that's very easy for god to say but don't be anxious about anything see the way we begin to do that friends the way we begin to walk that out is we must first begin to identify any of those things that cause us worry right that word anxious in the greek means to be unduly concerned unduly concerned and so we very quickly in 2021 we very quickly become unduly concerned when we flirt with the what ifs of life right when we flirt with those things that keep us up at night those things that cause us uh to not be able to sleep as well as we'd like to it's that diagnosis right it's that problem that continues to capture your mind over and over again it's the unknowns of life i'm fully convinced that the unknowns of life is one of the biggest attacks and plans of the enemy to keep believers in anxiety why because as we are obsessed with the unknown what happens tomorrow what happens next week what happens next month we are unable to actually live with god in the present and so in your life right now there becomes there's a power that we have when we begin to put a name towards those things that cause us anxiety that when we use words to get that out in the open right when we name them any of those things that drain you that consume you as you name them will i hold on to my health will my bills get paid will someone love me will i be single forever will i live for another year see god never promises that there would not be something to worry about he never says that life would be worry free once you say yes to jesus but he did very clearly give us a method in attacking it and what does he say he says be anxious in nothing but in everything in every situation in everything you know what everything means in the greek everything it means everything right he says nothing is too small nothing is too small to acknowledge to bring before me to give a name to friends no area is off limits no area is off limits to turn from anxiety into prayer and what does he say he says be anxious about nothing but in everything right but by prayer petition and thanksgiving this is so practical it's almost foolproof like what he gives us is i call these the three routines of prayer right they're going to be up on your screen in just a moment the three routines of prayer this is very practical for you to take home today is that number one as we do this how do we do this we we we have times of committed daily prayer i'll tell you if you don't have times a few minutes a day of committed daily prayer keeping slated times of prayer right where you bring consistent things before god this is necessary for the believer this is how i do it i have a in my journal i have kind of a like i taped a piece of paper that i typed out that literally has people and things that that consistently daily i pray for and so these are things i pray over myself things that i want to see i want to see me grow in these are things that i pray over my spouse my list is longer than hers right i pray over my kids there's specific things that i pray for my kids every single day there's specific names of people that i pray for that don't know jesus okay that i pray for every single day i pray for our church and its leaders right so we must have committed daily prayer but then that second piece is contending prayer that's the petition as mountains begin to come in to roll in as different situations come into your life that were unexpected right that you're not sure how to deal with these are the moments where you bring those things over and over and over again before god this is where we're contending for god to move to move mountains right i'm not going to give up i'm going to believe who god says he is and i'm going to ask him to move these mountains and so this is the petition part of prayer but then there's thanksgiving right and i call it an attitude of gratitude as cheesy as that may be right love me or leave it an attitude of gratitude i must keep gratitude alive in my heart so i keep god's perspective on my situation and so what do we do right we take the angst the anxiety of everything and in everything by prayer petition and thanksgiving and supplication what we present our requests to god we make our requests known to god we ask god to fight our battles on our behalf we ask him to intervene in our situations we ask him to give us grace and strength and wisdom and insight and patience right and when we don't do this we live drained we live half empty we live with less energy than we're meant to now you may say to me doesn't god already know what i need like doesn't he know friends he knows what you need he knows the number of hairs on your head he knows when you're sitting when you rise he knows your thoughts from afar right he knows what you need but he will often wait for our participation through prayer before granting that which we need see as a father god is our father and so as a father he waits for us to ask him see i'm a dad i got three kids i'm at times i feel like i have 10 kids because it's pretty pretty crazy in our house but i love i love my children it's so fun it's always kind of different and so as as a dad i never want my kids to see me as a mind reader i don't want them to see me as a mind reader i want them to see me as a relational participant in their daily lives i want them to ask me i want them to come to me i'm inclined to give them anything that they want uh and so i want them to ask me i want them to know as their father that i'm near that i can hear them and then i'm inclined to listen i love what matthew 7 11 says this illustrates this perfectly it says if you then though you are evil know how to get how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him and so what happens when we do this what happens when when god begins to participate with us i want to show you something real quick see when we go to the beach we're a beach family and so i don't know if you're a beach family but when we're a beach family we go to the beach and so this very much begins to illustrate as i as we begin to bring god in to our scenarios right as we begin to say hey god would you carry this i'm depending on you i have need of you right i have i need a regular rhythm of depending on god i must believe that god's greater than my situation and that he wants to carry my baggage and so as i look to lean on him to carry what i cannot right it's kind of like when i take my kids to the beach see this is what happens i'm going to try to put this on and so this is my these are my old beach chairs i love these chairs these chairs have been to the beach a lot and so when we do the beach friends like we do the beach right and so what happens is i strap the the chair on my back and then my son goes hey dad do you have mom's chair you got mom's chair oh yeah i got mom's chair babe i got mom's shirt okay great great okay dad um and then do you have my gatorade dad you got my gatorade this is my 10 year old right got my gatorade dad yes son i got your gatorade you know i got your gatorades in here okay got my gatorade i got your gatorade son i got your lunch and your snack and your gatorade and your apple i got all the things okay dad you the umbrella i don't really like the sun you know i like the shade yeah dad i yeah yeah babe i got the umbrella i got the umbrella all right i got the umbrella all right uh and then silas my two-year-old you got the toys you got the sand toys dad yep i got the sand toys i'm gonna grab them too i'm gonna grab them too now some of you are saying well you got the cart too brother yeah the kids are in the cart man the kids are in the cart okay kids are in the cart god bless you this is no no now listen now god bless my children they do do their share of caring but that's like yeah my son's got his book my daughter's got her doll right and and my wife helps out too she's uh she's got more muscles than i do um but this is is many many times what my trip to the beach looks like and i love i love as a dad that i can carry the majority of the stuff when we go to the beach i love that my kids lean on me as their dad to carry the majority of the stuff and friends you know what all they got to do is ask me all i got to do is ask i'm inclined to carry whatever they need me to carry and all they have to do is ask and so here we have the third thing that paul instructs us to do to become a people that stand firm in the lord is we must let god carry everything we must literally let him carry everything so i wonder i wonder for you what are you needing to bring to him today to carry what are you needing to bring to him today to carry you know right now um my dad is uh he just had a heart valve replacement about three weeks ago four weeks ago and uh and it's just been a slow kind of slow um recovery uh with kind of some compromised lungs and uh and he ended up he's 115 pounds or less ended up falling the other day he didn't break anything thank god but he ended up back in the hospital and so this is one of my everythings right these are my everythings these are those mountains that show up and so i just tell god like god this is heavy i i'm having trouble carrying this i need you to help me carrying this right now you're our north haven campus pastor jim d'angelo shout out to jim shout out to north we love you guys yeah come on jim has beat cancer with the help of jesus two times but now he's fighting sickness and friends he's been fighting for quite a while he's been fighting for i can't get this off he's been fighting for quite a while and i'll tell you it's heavy right this is our everything right now that that is it's heavy some of the things that we are carrying and so we just say god would you carry this would you heal him would you intervene in jim's life in bert's life right now in the name of jesus and so these are heavy things and god is saying hey bring me in let me carry it see god will teach us the significance of these commands through even the tougher moments and what begins to happen in verse seven what begins to happen when we do these three very basic things friends verse 7 in the peace of god which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in christ jesus so we must know that as believers god actually once at the end of the day give us peace that peace friends at the peace of god is our portion that in the midst of the madness we are meant to have peace this is this is something that goes completely beyond our understanding it surpasses it transcends your ability to understand it produces better results than anything that you can plan and it produces better security than anything you can scheme up but his peace god's peace must be experienced i love with that word peace it also means rest that same word for peace means rest and friends the rest of god the peace of god is impossible to understand at times but it's meant to be experience and i'll tell you when you make him the first place you look to for happiness when you develop an awareness that god is near and when you let him carry everything your promise that you will receive rest in the midst of the crazy and this is how we become a people that stand firm in the lord in the world that we live in it's crazy he actually even goes even farther he even promises to guard our hearts and our minds right like our emotions and our thought life god says hey if you step into this i'll not only give you peace i'll also set a guard around your heart and your mind i'll set a guard around your emotions and your thought life that word guard is a military term that gives us a picture of like it's as if god's peace is a detachment of soldiers standing guard over the city that is your life and i'll tell you friends we need god to guard our hearts and our minds in the world that we live in i love what isaiah 26 3 says it says you keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts you because he trusts you you know you can have that today stanford new haven you can have god's peace today like before you leave this room you can receive god's peace today and i want to tell you something we often look for god to do our part for us and we often try to do god's part for him and the only way this works like the only way this works the only way this thing actually works is if we do our part and then god is faithful to do his part if we make him first the first place we go to for happiness if we look for awareness develop an awareness that he's near if we let him carry everything he will do i promise you church he'll do his part he will do his part in giving you his peace with the big thought the big idea that i want i want you to leave this leave with today is that when you lean on god with your everything when i lean on god with my everything i experience his peace at all all of our locations would you stand with me this morning what you stand [Music] i believe right now the lord wants to do a work in us he wants to do work in us this morning friends would you believe today that god wants to encounter you in a fresh way because i believe that god wants to encounter us you this morning in a new way in a fresh way the lord literally whispered that to me yesterday he says i want to encounter people in a new way in a fresh way and so so wherever kind of you are in this journey wherever you are even in your journey with jesus would you believe today that that this is actually for you that this is not just for the person next to you the person who invited you maybe even the person who dragged you here but this is actually for you this morning and so as we sing in just a moment as we lean into him as we
