quick before you start this video take out a blank piece of paper and a pen and write your signature my name is Vanessa van Edwards and I love quirky behavior hacks and personality science in today's video we're gonna look at your signature and a couple of your friends signatures as well so if you're sitting next to a colleague pull out their ear buds ask them to draw their signature to ask a friend ask a family member because we're gonna analyze their signatures for their personality cues [Music] there are a few clues we need to look at in your collection of signatures now just to be clear the science of signatures is a little bit iffy so I found the studies that I think are the most reliable but this video is purely fun we're gonna see if we can find some cues that match the science and if not that's okay you can make up your own science as well clue number one angle the very first thing you want to look at is take out your piece of paper and notice the angle of your signature so did you have an ascending signature so it went up the page or did you have a descending signature so it went down the page or did you have a signature that was straight as an arrow so right let's see if I can do it straight for us or was it straight as an arrow the angle of your signature tells us a little bit about your personality if you had an ascending signature this is a sign of ambition optimism creativity and vitality this makes sense if you are feeling good you angle upward if you have a descending signature a sign of a sceptic you're a little more pessimistic are you struggling right now sometimes these feelings of being down can come out in your signature a straight as an arrow signature on a blank piece of paper is a sign of balance and control basically even though your paper did not have lines you created one in your head you're likely to be very organized and self-sufficient here's a famous example of Steve Jobs signature notice how it goes up his ascending signature is a symbol of his creativity and optimism clue number two size how big or small was your signature compared to the blank piece of paper you used one study looked at the signatures of 500 chief financial officers they found that the CFO's with the largest signatures were more likely to bend the truth specifically they were more likely to miss report the company's earnings or relaxed internal controls dr. Charles Ham one of the study's authors said this research establishes a link between signature size and narcissism the question for you is did you have a nice the big signature taking us the whole sheet of paper or did you have a little tiny itty-bitty signature that anyone could barely see the size might have something to say about how you feel about yourself the bigger the signature the more the confidence if you had a huge signature that took up your whole page you have a lot of confidence maybe too much to go around if you had a tiny signature you might need to work on claiming your space a little more and pumping yourself up don't stick yourself in a small box if you don't have to clue number three legibility take a look at your piece of paper is your signature clear and readable can you see every letter and read absolutely clearly or is it a mishmash of lines so you can't see a signal letter or the words in your signature legibility says something about how you think illegible signatures tend to signal quick minds they also tend to mean you're not bogged down by the details and feel your actions speak for themselves so your signature doesn't have to if you have a precise very legible signature it's a sign of open straightforwardness for example take a look at Bill Gates signature the large capital letter suggests confidence and the clarity of writing shows balanced clue number for completeness did you sign your signature with your full name or did you use just your initials or a nickname or even just your first name this is a sign of an independent streak for example Mark Zuckerberg signs was just his initials it looks like this experts say this is a sign of efficiency and evidence of how private Zuckerberg is another interesting example is from Steve Wozniak who just signs everything was powerful big letters and only his nickname shows a strong independent streak clue number 5 embellishments did you have little embellishments to your signature how did you dot your i's and cross your T's embellishments like little hearts Ortiz with a flourish at the end all of those embellishments say something about you or your person's personality here's an example meg Whitman of Hewlett Packard who adds a long line to the end of her signature experts say this is a sign of determination Drive and perseverance Sachin Adela of Microsoft as a hard stop to the end of his signature this is a sign of a strong sense of self and seriousness a general rule of thumb here is that graphologist and researchers of written language say the more embellishments the more complicated the person the simpler the signature the more straightforward the person did these cues work for you I am so curious if they did in the comments below tell me what worked and what didn't now go play signature analyst with a few of your friends have them write their signature then watch this video and see if any of those clues taka I think the jury is still out on signature science but it's a fun game to play with your friends when you have nothing better to do is it very very clear to see exactly what you wrote Oh signature
