Videonystagmopgrahy or VNG is a
diagnostic test used to evaluate the integrity of the inner ear vestibular
system and its associated nerve pathways. The test is completed, by a patient
sitting on a large table while wearing video recording goggles over the eyes.
The test has three main parts. First, while sitting upright the patient will
be asked to watch dots jump across the screen in different patterns. Second, the
patient will lie in different body positions, the eyes may be covered while
the patient is asked to move into different body laying positions. Lastly,
while reclining the eyes will be covered and cool and warm air will be blown into
the ears to stimulate the balance system. The eye movements from each
sub-test will be recorded and evaluated. Test results can be used to rule in or
out several inner ear vestibular function disorders.
