golden retrievers are the best dogs in the world but for how popular they are raising one is a lot tougher than you might expect here are the top 10 things i wish i do before getting a golden retriever golden retriever puppies are toothy tornadoes they may be adorable and soft and cuddly but they're way more work than you think they are before you bring one home even for people who've raised several golden retriever puppies every time they bring home a new one they're surprised at how much work it is so why are gold retriever puppies so difficult first they bite like crazy now all puppies bite because they need to learn that it's not okay to bite all the time and they need to learn how to control how hard they bite but what makes it worse is that puppy teeth are extra sharp so it can actually hurt kinda bad if they get you good and then it's even tougher with golden retriever puppies when it comes to biting because they were literally bred to put things in their mouths they were bred to retrieve gun down birds for hunters so they can be more mouthy than some other breeds the good news here is that around four months old they'll lose their razor sharp baby teeth and finally get their adult teeth in they'll also bite a lot less after this happens the next reason golden retriever puppies are so tough is because they've got tons of energy and they're really smart they need lots of physical and mental exercise if they don't get enough they'll get bored and when they get bored they'll start chewing up things in your house or bite or bark at you to get your attention now the good news about this part is that there's a lot that you can do to control it you can schedule play dates with other puppies you can train your puppy or give them puzzle toys like a frozen kong all of these exercise your puppy mentally and physically which can keep them out of trouble and make life a lot easier for you i'll drop a link it down in the description for instructions on how to make a frozen kong which has been a lifesaver for me the next thing nobody tells you about golden retrievers is that they're needy don't get a golden retriever if you're looking for a dog that will lay around the house and take care of themself golden retrievers are a lifestyle you don't just give them food and water and go on with your own life they're a huge part of your daily life just like kids goldens are social butterflies and they'll always want to be near you some goldens are extra needy and will always want to be touching you while others just want to be in the same room as you but all goldens need lots of loving and it's not just love and attention that they need they also need a few hours of training and exercise every day which we'll talk more about later and you need to brush them every few days clean their ears trim their nails brush their teeth and give them a bath about every month it's a lot of work that takes a lot of time and speaking of brushing them let's move on to the next thing you should know before getting a golden golden retrievers shed a lot if you don't have a golden retriever yet take a look around your house notice the countertops and shelves and your floors now imagine a thin layer of golden fluff over all of it that is what it will be like when you have a golden retriever in your home there is golden retriever fur in my keyboard as i'm working today and this morning i found a single thin golden retriever hair on my eggs but hey that's life as a golden parent if you want to have a little bit less hair around your home you can brush them a few minutes every day or every other day to keep the loose hair out of their coat and out of your house just be sure to brush them outside and rub them down before they come in otherwise a lot of that hair that you just brushed off is going to go right back onto your floor many people will tell you that there are de-shedding tools that can help with the shedding but these are actually bad for golden troopers coats another thing to keep in mind if you're looking to get a dog is that all dogs shed so yeah golden's shed a ton but no matter what breed you bring home you're going to have to deal with shedding but there is a major difference between a gold retriever that sheds and a yorkie that sheds which brings us to the next point golden retrievers are big dogs some people love big dogs but they aren't for everyone going back to the previous point one reason this is an issue is that they've got a lot more fur to shed than some other smaller breeds big dogs also eat a lot more so they're more expensive than little dogs which is something we'll talk about next they need lots of training if they pull on the leash or jump on you it's a much bigger deal than if a little dog were to pull or jump because goldens are so big and strong you'll need a big space too because a tiny apartment isn't big enough for them to run around in and get out all of their energy if you do live in a small apartment you'll want to make sure that you have a park nearby to take them to and one thing you might not think of is that you'll need to make sure that your car is big enough if you have kids you can't exactly stick your gold in your lap if you want to go on a family road trip okay you might not need a whole new car if you want to get a golden but it's related to this next point golden retrievers are expensive i mentioned how goldens are more expensive than little dogs because they eat more food but that's not all they need bigger toys and bigger beds than little dogs which of course are more expensive if they have medicine like flea tick or heartworm prevention they'll need bigger doses which are usually more expensive but they're not only expensive because they're big dogs we haven't even talked about how much golden retriever puppies are they range from about fifteen hundred to three thousand dollars depending on the breeder and location and we just did a study where we found that golden retriever puppies are getting more expensive which you can see in this graph here of course after you bring your puppy home the expenses are only beginning you'll need to get them food toys and treats plus take them to the vet regularly you should expect to spend about fifteen hundred to twenty five hundred dollars per year as a golden retriever owner but if this is a downer for you this next tip will bring a big smile to your face you don't get just one golden retriever golden retriever owners aren't like other dog owners we're obsessed here are some stats for you fourteen percent of golden retriever owners currently have two or more goldens but 48 of golden retriever owners have had two or more goldens in their lifetime so if you get one golden there's a good chance that you'll get a second we also found that five percent of people who have had a golden retriever have had six or more goldens in their lifetime which is now my new life goal i'll just need to be sure to rest up because of this next point gold retrievers have lots of energy i mentioned this earlier when talking about puppies but it definitely needs to be mentioned again golden retrievers especially younger golden retrievers have a ton of energy and need about an hour or two of exercise per day they'll need physical exercise so games like fetch tug or chase are good plus they'll need mental exercise so training and puzzle toys are good one thing that can check both of these boxes are hikes with a long leash golden retrievers were bred to be out in nature and a hike with a long leash lets them sniff to their hearts content sniffing is satisfying for dogs so a little time in the outdoors will help them feel content so they can behave when they get back home this next tip will also help with their energy levels golden retrievers need lots of training gold retrievers size and energy requires a lot of training to control they love humans so much that they often like to lick their faces even if that means jumping up on them to do it and they love other dogs so much that they often like to pull on the leash to go say hi both of these are acts of love but they're difficult to deal with because of how big and strong goldens are so they'll need lots of training to let them know that they're not supposed to jump and pull the good news though is that they're really smart they like to please people and they love treats so they respond well to training and when you're training them you're exercising their mind so you're helping them get out some of that mental energy plus it's a fun way for the two of you to work together and strengthen your relationship now these next two points will put you on an emotional roller coaster the first one is a little sad but the next one is well just let me know in the comments if you agree golden retrievers are not a very healthy breed goldens are more likely to get cancer than any other breed it stinks but the morris animal foundation is studying over 3 000 golden retrievers in the golden retriever lifetime study to understand why that is one weird part about this though is that an american study found 60 of golden retrievers will get cancer while a study from the uk found that less than 40 percent of goldens will get cancer this is one of several differences between american vs english golden retrievers and you can watch a video we made about all their differences next in addition to cancer golden retrievers are prone to allergies joint problems ear infections heart issues and obesity so if you get a golden retriever become best friends with your vet so that they can take good care of your dog okay enough of all this sadness let's get to the most important thing you need to know about golden retrievers golden retrievers will steal your heart the fact that they can be so difficult will make you love them even more after a long day of playing and training and keeping them out of trouble your heart will melt when they cuddle up on the couch with you they're full of love and all they want to do is be with their families they've got sweet smiles and endless slobbery kisses and fluffy hugs for you just be careful you don't want the rest of your family getting jealous of how much you'll love your golden retriever what's something you wish you known about golden's let me know down in the comments and watch this next video to see the difference between english vs american golden retrievers alright everybody thanks for watching and remember never take your golden retriever for granted and always check your poop bags for holes
