What the NFL was like 10 years ago (2011)

in week three of the 2011 season the buffalo bills hosted the mighty new england patriots the bills were struggling to find a quarterback coach combo that worked and the patriots they were as loaded as ever if this was still considered a rivalry it had entered ohio state michigan territory since the patriots had won the last 15 matchups in a row and this game in 2011 looked much of the same as the patriots jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half this one was well on its way to yet another blowout but all the sudden things quickly shifted very [Music] they effectively [Applause] woodhead unable [Music] it is picked off [Music] first down at the 23. off the pump fake picked off again jackson cuts back against the patriots tom brady on first down has it deflected and the pitfall intercepted by florence is it for the touchdown the bills went on to beat the patriots for the first time in 16 games they also became one of the hottest storylines in september that year as they would last until july 25th this led to the cancellation of that year's hall of fame game and took up much of the headlines also randy moss announced his retirement cam newton was taken number one overall this was the final year the nfl partnered with reebok and madden 12 was released madden 12 advertised an all-new collision system advanced defensive ai custom playbooks and better overall presentation the game would receive good reviews from critics and mixed reviews from users although compared to modern day maddens is scored much better some new rules that the league introduced included kickoffs being moved from the 30 to the 35 the boise state rule which made it so teams couldn't change their field color and players launching to tackle was now banned as far as important free agency moves here were some of the most notable the titans vince young signed with the eagles the bills dante witner signed with the niners and the chargers darren sproles signed with the saints then lastly the biggest trades before the season were grey golson of the panthers albert hainsworth and chad ocho cinco to the patriots and reggie bush to the dolphins this was a good change for bush as he would go on to finally having his first thousand-yard season rushing here he goes [Applause] [Music] the 2011 season was surrounded by some interesting story lines first off the eagles had both michael vick and vince young on their roster now vic was coming off his amazing bounce back season in 2010 where he led the team to the playoffs and vince young was looking for a fresh start this famously got dubbed as the dream team by vince young was this the year that philly finally makes a playoff run another quarterback that was featured in storylines was josh freeman who had an excellent 2010 campaign could he continue to improve and lead the bucks to the playoffs out in indianapolis there was a lot of confusion going on with peyton manning and his neck injury after it was clear that he wouldn't be playing in 2011 questions loomed about his future with the colts mini thought that he might never play another snap in the nfl out in cincinnati after the team chose to draft andy dalton carson palmer was upset and demanded a trade the team had also gotten rid of chad ocho cinco so this was looking like a passing of the torch type of year for them and of course there was the tebow hype he had started three games in 2010 and despite being listed third on the death chart going into the season all the talking heads continued to talk about him [Music] when it came to the regular season preview here were your pre-week 1 power rankings the packers were geared up to repeat as super bowl champions the eagles held themselves in the top 3 and the jets with their stout defense and mark sanchez were still a contender the worst teams were predicted to be the bengals bills and panthers i'll keep up the power rankings as the season progresses by week 6 the packers were already looking unbeatable surprisingly the 49ers bills and lions had all been better than expected the lions offense looked incredibly strong calvin johnson had an unbelievable nine touchdowns in their first five games also the dream team out in philly was one in four they did not look good it was also tebow time out in denver then lastly it looked like the madden curse had already gotten a hold of peyton hillis by week 10 jim harbaugh had become the front runner for coach of the year with the 49ers alex smith was having by far the best year of his career also the bengals had been playing surprisingly well with the rookie tandem of andy dalton and aj greene around that same time they had traded carson palmer to the raiders in one of the most lob-sided trades ever the bengals received a first and second round pick for carson palmer and palmer only lasted two seasons in oakland out in indianapolis there was a development taking place curtis painter helped lead the team to a zero and nine start it seemed as if they were losing on purpose and this infamous tanking became known as the suck for luck season since andrew luck looked like the dream quarterback prospect the following year by the end of the regular season here was espn's final power rankings aaron rodgers had one of the best seasons ever by a quarterback the 49ers were the shock of the nfl going 13-3 the lions made the playoffs for the first time in forever the broncos and cardinals who both started the year terribly rallied off a bunch of wins to end the season the broncos were heavily publicized due to what tim tebow had done despite most of it being ugly football and not even that impressive on tebow's part somehow someway they kept on winning and they made it to the playoffs cam newton's best efforts won him rookie of the year the dream team bounced back a little but overall they were still disappointing josh freeman looked much worse than he did in 2010 that hot start the bills got didn't amount to much and the colts managed to do what they set out to do and they won the andrew luck sweepstakes alright let's give a final wrap up to the regular season this was a memorable year for a variety of reasons off the field longtime raiders owner al davis passed away in october of 2011. he had a massive impact on the game for 39 years and raiders fans will always appreciate him on the field this was a huge year for passing there were 10 quarterbacks over 4 000 yards and drew brees set the record for passing yards in a single season however the packers going 15-1 and the overall efficiency of aaron rodgers was what won him the mvp as far as the other stat leaders maurice jones drew was the one good thing happening in jacksonville as their rookie quarterback blaine gabbert struggled lesean mccoy led all running backs and rushing touchdowns when it came to receivers megatron had an elite level season putting up god tier numbers welker cruz and fitzgerald were all in their primes and had great seasons as well defensively despite minnesota's struggles jared allen was an absolute monster defensively putting up 22 sacks and even intercepted a pass as a d-lineman this shot of him chasing down tim tebow with his helmet off is the perfect representation of the toughness this man displayed charles woodson eric weddle and kyle arrington led the league in interceptions and darrell rivas was still the best corner in the league then terrell suggs was as dominant as ever in 2011 14 sacks 20 tackles for loss and an incredible seven forced fumbles led him to taking home the defensive player of the year and finally to wrap up the 2011 regular season this was the number one play [Applause] this was the top sportscenter play for so long they eventually had to retire it [Music] the 2011 playoffs were absolutely wild on day one of the wild card round aaron foster helped the texans pummel the bengals 31-10 out in new orleans the saints smacked the lions in a game that combined for over a thousand yards of offense despite the lions losing guys like stafford megatron and nadamikan sioux gave fans hope for their future day two of the playoffs saw the giants nearly shut out the offensive powerhouse falcons and then out in denver this happened the broncos have been in three overtime games this year they want them all it's thomas at the 50s [Applause] this was the peak of tebow mania john 3 16 316 passing yards t-bowing in the end zone and the happiest night of skip bayless's life in the divisional round the patriots would put an end to tebowmania once and for all out in the nfc the niners edged out the saints in one of the greatest fourth quarters ever on day two baltimore hung on against houston and the stunner of the playoffs was the giants going into lambeau and shutting down the 15-1 packers from this point fans started getting the 07 vibes from this team now fast forward to conference championship weekend in the afc it was a fourth quarter dominated by defense with time expiring the ravens lined up a 32-yard field goal but they missed the ravens would decide to address the kicker position after the season and the justin tucker era began in 2012 and the patriots advanced to the super bowl in the nfc championship that game was insane it was physical intense had nail-biting moments and ultimately there's one name that will haunt niners fans forever kyle williams he was the return man for the niners during that game in a critical moment during the fourth quarter he had a punt that touched his leg just barely then in overtime he muffed another punt which led to the game-winning field goal for the giants super bowl 46 aka the rematch the patriots were favored like the last time but the margin was very close this time around the giants featured a top 10 offense and despite being outscored on the season their defense had shown up in the playoffs the patriots were stacked across the board offensively brady had thrown for 5 000 yards and wes welker and gronk had been unbelievable funny enough chadocho cinco and albert haynesworth the two big names that they traded for barely even played during the season but anyways here's how this game went the giants jumped out in front early with a safety then a touchdown the patriots would retaliate scoring a field goal and a touchdown just before half time to make it 10 to 9. then with an aaron hernandez touchdown in the third quarter it seemed like the patriots were starting to control this game but the giants began chipping away at the lead they would make two field goals in the third quarter then after a battle of a fourth quarter this happened time unbelievable it's gonna come down to this again he's been here before those six fourth quarter comebacks 346. one time out and the two-minute warning for eli four-man rush eli throwing into traffic on the sidelines [Applause] here comes the blitz he gets it away it is caught by nixon second and goal [Applause] he wanted to stop and he gets into the end zone that's exactly what new england was doing they robbed gronkowski in just to try for the jump ball in the hail mary here from the 49 brady barring a defensive foul the game ends here to the end zone hernandez is there tipped and batted gronkowski can't get it incomplete [Applause] the giants had beaten the patriots in the big game twice in five years since that day the giants have only appeared in one playoff game overall the 2011 season was a great one it was a time in which you had explosive offense and tough physical defense in the playoffs pretty much everything that makes football great we saw at some point during that year and from eight yards back bob is going to bring it back and the rookie breaking tackles on his way into
