welcome back to around the atlas today i'm talking about palm springs the desert getaway that's only about two hours away from los angeles or san diego and it's home to more mid-century modern homes than anywhere else in the world known as being the playground of the stars and one of the most relaxing places that i visited i always come back to palm springs i come back here yearly for modernism week and i'm going to talk to you about the things that i've learned over the years from visiting this beautiful city we're going to talk about the things that you need to know such as the weather where to stay things to do but also some of the interesting fun facts and history of palm springs that make it so enjoyable to visit so the palm springs of today is known for its stylish hotels fun music art and architecture events but if you scale back 2 000 years ago how did this city come to be it was originally inhabited by the agua caliente band of koya indians you can actually visit where this land originated in an area called indian canyons and this is a palm oasis you can actually hike through this area it's shaded by palms and it's like entering another world because there's natural air conditioning they have some of the original homes that the kuya indians inhabited they're called quiche and they were made of palm fronds and they called palm springs sequi which means boiling water this area actually has an aquifer underground and you can see a babbling brook as you hike through the area they used hot and cold springs for heating and cooking their food the queen indians still inhabit this area to this day in fact if you look at a map of palm springs it's a patchwork of indian land the palm springs of today as i mentioned is the playground of the stars since the 40s and 50s some of the most famous names in music and film have lived here or have visited including frank sinatra dean martin bob hope elvis presley had his honeymoon home here what really put palm springs on the map is the modernist architecture you'll hear the name albert frey a lot he is one of the pioneers of modernist architecture he started here in 1932 and the modernist movement is marked by 1940 to roughly 1970 and it's noted by its industrial materials such as steel and glass bringing the outdoors in having these flat roofs and overhangs as opposed to the sloped roofs that you see in snowy conditions in fact you can actually visit many of these homes during modernism week and it's really interesting because a lot of these homes i wouldn't have even known they existed from the road i wouldn't have known how cool they were inside from just viewing them on the road so modernism week happens the second week in may there's also a number of different events that happen each year in palm springs that draw so many visitors to the region most notably is coachella which is two weekends in april there's splash house and that's a music festival held in some of the pool areas here there's stagecoach festival which is country music festival at the end of april in early may there's the dinosaur weekend which is lgbt festival held here in late september draws around 15 000 people per year there's a number of conventions and sporting events such as golf and tennis per year so let me know your favorite event held here in palm springs comment below if you're going to any of the large events that i named be sure to book your hotel at least 90 days to six months in advance to get the best rate i read that even during this time one star motels can cost around 400 so you definitely want to get ahead of that if you are coming here for some of the events the season in palm springs usually starts from november december when it's nice and warm for the snowbirds and usually ends in june around late june begins the low season because the temperatures here can average about 105 per day sometimes they can go up to 120 per day around 3 p.m to 5 p.m you'll notice a lot of restaurants close between lunchtime and dinner time and it's also because it's pretty hot during this time you'll notice a lot of restaurants have misters on which keeps things cool and during this hot season especially if you have dogs you might want to bring foot protection keep sun protection on because it can get pretty warm here which brings me to my next point which is pools there are more pools per capita in palm springs than anywhere else in the united states and some of these pools are so fun to visit and what's great is you don't have to stay at the resort many times just to access the pools you can get an entry fee or a day pass to many of the resort pools for around 20 25 depending on the resort and some of my favorites are the ace hotel this aguero hotel which is really colorful beautiful environment with music and wi-fi there's the omni rancho las palmas which has a lazy river and multiple water slides which is super fun if you have kids or if your kid at heart one of my favorite things about palm springs is the art and the art scene and you don't actually have to visit a museum to visit the art a lot of it is on display outside it's called the palm springs public art project and you'll see most notably the marilyn monroe statue which came back to palm springs a lot of locals call this the eiffel tower of palm springs she really embodies the spirit of palm springs glamorous hollywood vibe i recommend visiting the palm springs museum of art i've been here multiple times and i love their temporary exhibits as well as their permanent exhibits they pay homage to the native american peoples here with a lot of the displays and they also have some really interesting contemporary and public art as well one of my favorites is one by gonzalo libreja and this is a public artwork outside of the museum you can see it right in front of the museum it's a giant automobile standing inverted into a pool and it's called the history of suspended time it's very thought provoking i was just walking around it in awe wondering how it was able to stand up like that and it's on display for a year here and also at the palm springs museum of art they have free thursdays so in terms of weather here you'll notice that a lot of people come out in the evenings because the temperatures are still nice and warm during the day it can get pretty hot especially if you're here during the summer time so a lot of people either stay indoors or they go to the pool there's also a windier part of palm springs and i'm going to display the wind map right here but it kind of starts near where the airport is and you'll notice it gets pretty windy and also sandy in this area so you might want to avoid driving and walking around in this area you'll enter palm springs through highway 111 and this is an iconic road because it crosses through the southern coachella valley and on one side you'll see these beautiful mountains that change color throughout the day from pinks to purples to golden colors what's interesting about this roadway is that there are no drive-throughs so if you're hungry you're gonna have to check out one of palm springs most delicious restaurants they have everything here from some of the best italian food i've had outside of italy so we are at il giardino here in palm springs and we are trying the calamari this is not breaded and fried this is sauteed i got an entire bronzino right here this is how good this one some of the best is food some of the best coffee shops they have a starbucks reserve here right along the 111. they handcraft unique coffees that are rare and exclusive to this area and they even develop specific coffee drinks just for palm springs which is really interesting another one of my favorite coffee shops is coffee k-o-f-f-i they have a number of locations here and it's a great place to hang out they also have food and pastries if you do one thing in palm springs i recommend checking out the ariel tram such a cool way to view multiple different types of ecology in one 10-minute ride you literally travel from the bottom of the desert floor of the coachella valley all the way to the top of the san jacinto mountains in fact when we visited here in may there was still snow on the ground it was very unique to go from 80 degree temperatures to 50 degree temperatures at the top i had to bring an entire different layer of clothing just to visit this area and the aerial tram has kind of a james bond feel it was built by albert frey the tram station so it's kind of got this really cool retro feel to it it's the largest rotating aerial tram in the world at the current capacity they fit about 50 people in one tram and everyone is welcome we saw babies all the way to kids and elderly people including service dogs are welcome on the tram they open the windows and it rotates through so this beautiful breeze comes in a lot of people were asking me is it scary to ride the tram and it's actually more fun and thrilling and interesting than scary the only scary part they have five towers and when you cross over the tower there's a gentle sway and it's actually really fun most people were actually really enjoying it [Applause] [Music] kind of gave the the ride a little bit of interest and a little bit of a disneyland feel now when you reach the top feels like you're an eagle soaring above the desert floor i mean you're higher than an airplane over 8 000 feet high and you can really feel the elevation and there's a number of viewing posts from up top it's a great place to take a panoramic view it's one of the most unique experiences i've ever had in any of my travels going from the desert to the mountains in 10 minutes and the last thing i want to mention is that 40 miles east about one hour away is joshua tree national park and this is a must-see it's an iconic national park and one of my favorites and there you have it i hope you get a chance to visit palm springs very soon this is an area that i keep coming back to it's so relaxing i feel like every time i come here the daily grind just melts away and i'm able to take in the surroundings and enjoy the peace and quiet of the desert as well as some of these lively events that happen each year so give this video a like and subscribe down below and stay tuned for more travel videos
