I'll always stop what I'm doing to watch a Community video essay.
That Jeff is not a straight-man is so freaking important to me in why I love community. Abed is right when he calls their thematic episodes homages, because they fundementally celebrates tv and nerdy subcultures. It's anti-cynicism towards the things I've loved as a kid. It's why the D&D episodes are so perfect, because while they do make fun of the silly aspects of the format they also celebrates why tabletop roleplaying can be so freaking amazing. There are few shows I have seen, who take these nerdy elements and laughs along with us rather than at us for liking them. And they can do that, because all the characters are just as mad as us. There's no straight-man to roll their eyes and condescendingly mock us. No Jeff gets down and dirty with the rest of them.
This is good. I read an article contrasting Community with The Big Bang Theory several years ago, that made me want to check out Community. The article basically said The Big Bang Theory is mocking nerds, with the punchlines being them saying nerdy things; whereas in Community, the show is for nerds, to enjoy the nerds being nerdy, not laugh and scoff at them. I think the article made a good point.
I just watched this video the other day. Between this and the Vulture panel, it's really made me miss Community.
Is anyone else bothered by smiling Abed in the promo material? Itβs just so unnerving to see hahaha
Just to let you know. This video is what got me to starting community and I finished it all in about 3-4 days. Rewatching already lol.
Edit: Thanks for the gold! I'm already on season 2 now. π

βI donβt get no respectβ - this guy probably
I just watched this the other day!
This is the best show I've ever watched. The characters are strong but flawed. The show is funny but heartfelt. It is unique and unafraid, not willing to bed to the whim of normal shows and beg for viewers. It has an identity and is proud of it. Troy and Abed are portrayal of friendship that has ever been televised. They love, they fight, they shoot zombies. They do it all, as long as it's together. The last episode is probably the best of the series which is almost unheard of on tv. Best series of all time.
