[Music] so today I wanted to make a video and I wanted to talk about the way it felt to be a black person particularly a dark-skinned female in Mexico I'm just saying these are all the experiences that I had these are all the moments and the situation that I encountered as a dark-skinned black female in Mexico this is what I feel like maybe a lot of you can expect if you are the same and are going to Mexico I feel like those kind of videos are important they're important to me I feel like maybe it might be helpful to someone else out there first of all let me just say that I love Mexico and I love Mexican people and everyone there was nothing but nice to me people are attracted to that people were attracted to you they thought I was pretty I got compliments like crazy it was it was it was nice I think from me growing up in America my dark skin was it was always chained maybe not yeah I mean to be honest I feel like I definitely got a lot more insults growing up as a dark-skinned black girl then I definitely than I did compliment but in Mexico I first got there people were staring I kind of had to adjust to it when I would get on the bus people would just kind of look at me girl that's when you got to get on you got stand there everybody's staring at you like that good dog guys and girls you know how sometimes as a female you see a guy staring or people standing kind of get a little irritated and then you have to remind yourself when someone else has to remind you that like when guys are attracted to something they just kind of like they look at it they look at it they look at you people stared at me and females with staring me now when a guy stares at me I kind of have to take it as like maybe he thinks I'm attractive I'm not gonna be like you know mean mugham but when a female stares at me naturally you think like she got a problem when was what's up but one time it was like something touch the wall and there were people everywhere I'm sure my friend and there was these girls staring at me and I saw them standing at me we were in line for a food stamp they were like younger maybe like early high school and I'd peek but I try to ignore and in my mind I think I'm just kind of conditioned to think like oh people don't like black people people don't like black girls they're looking at me was like a little bit hate maybe a little bit of disgust and then I actually see one of them whispered to like the older lady at the food stand leg and she's looking at me obviously she's talking about me so I'm like re but then my friend was like oh did you hear that and I was like hear what and she was like the girl was just saying look at that girl's skin she's so pretty like I wish my skin looked like that and I was think is she really and she was like yeah that was toward the end of the trip and at that point I was kind of like when she told me that because if you thought I was pretty maybe smile at me even tell me I was fairly don't stare at me and didn't just like gossip to your friend it makes me uncomfortable but in the States like I don't know I feel like that just indicates like maybe problem or like if attitude but I was like well she told me that I would have smiled back at them or like I don't know I don't know females down there they do not smile at you that's how it just was down there I went to the nail salon like I mean when it's like in a public setting the bus they're just like walking down the street the lady stared they don't say much but then when you're in a personal setting they were so nice to me they were smiling oh you're so pretty another time when we were in Sayulita we went to a restaurant and the first thing we did we walked up to the restaurant and the lady greeted us and she said oh wow you're so pretty and I was like ah thank you I do every time thank you thank you okay what I came to understand by the end of my trip you're just different people they just want to take it in look at you I'm at the point where now if I go back to Mexico I'm not gonna take it so personal it was me and there were two girls mainly the whole trip that I had a class with one was um Asian American and the other one was Mexican American I speak I can understand proficient Spanish or cable-like and there's someone just talking about me in the corner or like over to the side and I'm walking by I most likely am NOT gonna catch it I'm not even paying attention but when we would go places and we would walk around my Mexican American friend she would hear everything every time we were walking somewhere she would hear people's comments she would hear things people were shouting to us from me a fire and so she would tell us later like all those guys to say hola a Chinese girl and a black girl like okay I gotta finish this video because I'm irresponsible and I didn't charge my battery last night when I knew I was gonna try to make this video today and my camera died so I had to charge it for 30 minutes so a guy let us try to tell the stories in the order that happens so the school the people who ran the school definitely told me that the place I lived was like a 20 minute walk and me being the track enthusiast that I am I was like 20 minute walking no problem so I think it was like the second day of class I just thought you know let me just walk home and it was still hot outside it was probably like 4 or 5 o'clock it was still hot ok so I walked home and it was hot and it was more like a 45 50 minute walk home huh anyway so when I was walking home I stopped at a grocery store and I was walking back and by the time I got like halfway home the bags were ripping in my water the water joke something was ripping and it was falling out and a Mexican man walked by and he was like all your bad guys are doing this is all in Spanish most of these instances occur in Spanish say oh your bag is ripping and I said yeah I know but I don't like what can I do I don't have anything to put it in so he took he started to take his groceries out of his bag and you know I knew who's about give it to me I'll say no no no no like that's not necessary it's fine it's okay and he insisted means I no no please like take take the bag put your stuff in it and I was like okay thank you thank you so much and then he's like what's your name I told him my name's Kayla um and he said nice to meet you he kissed my hand and then he was on his way but when you get on the bus there's usually not all the time but a lot of times performers will get on the bus and you know they'll have their boombox and they're rapping or it might be someone dressed up and you know they just trying to make money so I've gotten gotten on the bus the performers were kind of blocking the walkway so as I was coming through one of them he turned around like Oh someone needs to get through and he's kind of double taken he's they're all like very very pretty um oh you're so pretty and okay so I went and took my feet if you're black and you plan on going to Mexico expect to hear the word morena like you're going to hear it the more they know I don't know yeah I guess it really does translate to a brown-skinned person black girl black person just darker skin person didn't you stick hearing that because I heard it like on the daily when I would be walking by myself or with my friends I would hear people say oh I'm Elena a lot more Dana that's how I would know people were talking about me or people were talking to me they were coming more Dana um when we were going to tell you Lita and we went to the beach party you like a gated things when we walk into the gate and immediately people stop doing what they're looking at up again there's me there's a black girl there's asian girl there's a Mexican girl we're just standing there we stand out one of my friends told me like she turned to my room and she said oh did you just hear that I know they know here what what's up she was that um someone just said hey Africa now I'm not offended by it it's just I don't know it just reminds me of Mean Girls damn Africa what happened I already talked about the instance where the guy kind of just like just kind of merged over into our group and just started talking to us said something along the lines of your skin here like it's good here we like that here and I was like thank you that's nice to hear cuz like I said people in America they don't they don't treat me as nicely as people in Mexico there which is crazy people should be nicer in Mexico than they do here right before I left Mexico I go into the little spot where people jump off the pier thing and there was like a group of guys there jumping off as soon as I walked over there there was this one guy he was standing kind of close to me and I was like you know I got my camera and I'm like record I'm taking pictures whatever of the view but I peeked that he's good he's like inching a little closer a little closer so um mm-hmm so they were jumping off and I think I was taking a picture and while before someone jumped off I was saying oh crap like let me get that so I tried to like get my camera together and I'm trying to record and then the guy next to me speaks up and he's like hey late in Spanish cuz they hate wait to his friend like she's trying to record she's trying to record y'all and then um that's when I finally looked at him like oh he's with them guys turning what's he talking about and they saw me and they kind of like like oh yeah [Music] follow me like right there like I just I don't know they were excited not to be recorded but to be recorded by the more Dana but like after that it kind of like broke the ice so they were jumping I was talking to the guy we were having conversation but as I was talking to him the friends were like super interested like they were oh my god like he's talking to her so like they were scooting closer now I'm kind of like standing like this on the rail because I got him he's real close to me another guy's real close another guy sitting on the rail he was about to jump off he scooted closer they're all trying to hear the conversation they just really interesting like Oh where's she from where she's saying here what she'd been doing that was that instance a couple of times when I was down there people actually take pictures with me oh okay I don't have a problem with if people want to take a picture with me I'm I don't know I just like some picture like what are you gonna do with it is it weird yeah am i a little awkward heck yeah but I'll take the picture with you and me and my friend were walking to the boardwalk no we were going to a restaurant desperately trying to find a cute boy then we saw a Thai restaurant a waiter walking and a little girl ran up to me and she stopped me oh you know why she's finally 13 ish she was like oh hi like my friend wants to take a picture with you I'm like and I look back I'm looking like we should we should talk about I look down there I see another girl like 30 feet down the sidewalk alone wait okay sure do you want to take a picture shirt now I have a mean I had on a dress we were dressed up okay so I was like maybe I'm like dressed up maybe they never seen a black girl I don't know maybe they never I don't know I never know I don't care so she's like you know I ain't cool like she said it's cool so then I'm looking and like a group of like seven people start walking over okay and first of all the first person leading the pack is own man okay and he's my he's what's mine he was happy I was there first of all I thought it was a little girl talking about I thought it was one person I thought I was taking a picture with one maybe two the two of them there were like seven of them that was it that was moving on with our name we're at the beach party a boy finally came over there everybody was staring at us the boy finally comes over bricks eyes I guess the group of guys behind him once he walked away left they felt like okay maybe we can talk to them so he started talking to us we hung out with them for a little bit but not before of course they took their pictures they all wanted to take pictures so we all took pictures with them and then we like got to ride on their uh their four-wheelers back to the hostel we sing and then we hung out with them the next day they were cool if you're a female period white black you know whatever you're going to be cat calls like I know a lot of people with a feminist type girl they'll be like but I mean what are you gonna do it's not a big deal so you're not gonna feel super uncomfortable you're not gonna feel endangered just no it's just just expected I don't want to I maybe I shouldn't use a blanket term saying all that in America I don't know people are usually very very nice they're nice they're but I didn't expect any problems going to Mexico wasn't my first time going to Mexico even the friends I have here my on my Latin American friends people have immigrated here Latin American friends there always makes me stuff like that so I didn't expect any problems going down [Music] [Laughter] okay if you want to go to Mexico go for it don't have any reservations just go knowing that people are gonna stare at you people might want to take pictures with you people are gonna actually brought your hair where you're from don't be offended if people call you more than that don't be offended if people stare at you don't that's a wrap goodbye see you next time more than them anytime okay tell your friends about me [Music]
