What used to be a cathedral and then a mosque, the Hagia Sophia, according to many visitors as well as Turks, is now simply a museum. In 1935, Kemal Ataturk had the building transformed into a museum. Today, against the wishes of millions of Turks, Recep Erdogan has been trying to have it recapitalized into a mosque once again.
The beauty of Hagia Sophia is that it contains remnants of both Christian and Islamic art in mosaics and designs throughout. It is an architectural wonder and an awe-inspiring experience upon entry.
The argument of the structure being a church or a mosque will continue on as long as there are those that are fixated on religion rather than the architectural feats, designs and accomplishments of man.
