if you have a teen or tween chances  are they've asked you for Discord. Now,   what is Discord and how do you use it?  Well, let's get right into it [Music]   First, Discord is basically a chat application  it's a way for people to communicate with other   people it was originally built in 2015 as a way  for gamers to communicate during games or outside   of games so if you meet somebody inside of a game  during a live gaming event then you can take that   chat out into Discord and meet up next time hey  I really liked playing this game with you let's   go ahead and play at four o'clock we'll get  on and be in the same server and things like   that so it was a real easy way for gamers to  communicate with each other and coordinate game   playing and communicate during the game if they  didn't want to use the in-game chat application   well it has definitely extended Way Beyond that  and now you can find Discord servers for pop   culture even family Tech has a Discord server  and we'll get into that because it's going to   help you figure out how to use Discord so that you  can be an expert for your kids so as I mentioned   Discord is a way to communicate coming from the  80s and 90s it makes more sense to relate it to   a mix between an AOL chat room a bulletin board  system and an online Forum it has basically all   of these qualities to it so Discord is broken  up into servers and each server is basically   where people communicate over a specific topic  or a specific friend group a specific school   system so they all are together in this particular  server inside the server there is just a standard   text chat that's maybe a general discussion they  also might have Forum links where you can pose a   question and get answers to those questions or you  can voice chat or video chat or even live stream   a video you can go ahead and join any server many  servers are private so you have to have a specific   invitation in order to join that server you can  also find servers in discoverable section but   you do have to have over a thousand members to  be in that discoverable section so any of those   servers are going to have a lot more members  than a private server so many YouTubers who   want to have their Community like family Tech on  their own Discord server will give you an invite   link to their specific server to find family text  invite link just go ahead and go to the details of   this video and hit the link for the Discord server  invite now once you join a server you may have to   agree to rules you may have specific hurdles that  you need to overcome in order to access private   chat areas some of these include choosing your  own roles but basically what you need to know   here is is that servers can be private they can  be public but you do have to join the specific   server so there is not a algorithm or a feed for  Discord where you're just going to see all the   latest updates you do have to specifically go  to that server to see those updates each server   will have their own rules and these are rules  that are created by the server Creator or the   moderators for that server since Discord can be  kind of the Wild Wild West each server may or   may not be inappropriate for your child many of  these servers can be labeled NSFW now we'll get   into some of the restrictions that are put in  place when you do have the correct age for your   child if they're under the age of 18 that kind of  eliminates some of this not safe for work content   but there will be areas that will be not safe  for work that are not labeled as such so these   would be inappropriate appropriate for children  and you would want to maybe keep an eye on what   servers your children are joining there's also  the ability to private message inside of Discord   so you can send a private message to somebody  who is in a server with you or is a friend of   yours now in the user settings you can limit who  can private message you we'll get into that in   just a minute so as I briefly mentioned there  are definitely servers for all kinds of groups   including schools so if you sign into Discord with  a school email address then you can actually join   with other people in that school email address  as long as they're verified School accounts now   these servers are not managed or maintained by  the school system themselves it's just a way for   Discord to verify that you are with that school  and you should be allowed in that group but again   not associated with the school so if something  happens in that server um you really can't go to   the school administration to get it shut down or  anything like that because it is not associated   with and not managed by the school at all but  these groups can actually be really beneficial   for your kids because they can there can be  groups for different classes so they can get   help on homework there can be groups you can do  subgroups so that you can be working on a project   together inside of Discord so there's a lot of  things that you can do with that school official   email address that can be beneficial for your  kids so as I mentioned let's dig into these user   settings now first to join Discord you do have to  be 13 years old hard stop end of story that is the   age restriction limit provided by Discord so if  you're 10 11 12 year old wants a Discord account   do not let them have a Discord account you would  have to lie about their age in order to get them   that account and lying about their age first sets  a really bad precedent because you're telling your   child they can lie to get what they want and  it also might mess up settings that can be put   in place for your child for their protection  so make sure that if your child is under the   age of 13 they do wait until they turn 13 to get  their Discord account my son actually had it on   his calendar get Discord on his 13th birthday he  was really excited to get it so inside the user   settings when they are an account that is between  the ages of 13 and 18 there are some default   settings that get put in place but you can always  go in here and change these settings and make sure   they are in place for your child the first one  is safe DMS so if you go into the privacy and   settings in your child's account you can set  it that you only want to receive safe direct   messages now it's going to scan any messages that  get sent to your child for inappropriate content   and delete that message and not have it sent to  them so this is one way to keep it safe obviously   some things will still get through no system  is perfect so I would keep an eye on the direct   messages but this is going to help curtail a lot  of the really bad stuff that could come through   on direct messages the other thing that gets set  by default for children that are 13 to 18 is that   they are not allowed to join any servers that  are marked NSFW which means not safe for work   which means most likely super inappropriate for  your child so they won't be able to join any of   those servers by default because of their age  another setting to check is friend requests on   default it will allow allow you to accept friend  requests from anybody that's in the same server   as you so if you join a public server that has  thousands of people you might get friend requests   from inappropriate people that are also in that  server but if you change this setting so that   you only can get friend requests from friends of  friends it's going to curtail that just a little   bit obviously again no systems perfect they scam  your friend your friend accepts them as a friend   and then they are able to add you as a friend so  I wouldn't completely rely on that but it is going   to stop a lot of the most egregious Predators from  attempting to contact your child and you can also   set it to not accept direct messages from server  members so again if there is a server member that   you are not friends with you will automatically  not be able to see those direct messages or they   won't be able to send you those direct messages  if you are a child and you have this setting set   even adults can set these settings as well so if  you don't want to get inappropriate content in   your direct messages go ahead and set that privacy  setting and set these other privacy settings and   you can keep your account a little safer now  as I mentioned family Tech does have their own   Discord server the reason I created this Discord  server is so that parents can sign into Discord   join a server where they're not going to get any  judgment if they don't know how to use Discord   they can learn how to use Discord because I always  say that you should be where your children are   sharing where they are communicating so if your  child has a Discord account I highly highly highly   recommend you get a Discord account and if you get  a Discord account you might be a little lost as to   what servers you want to join you probably don't  even really want to use Discord at least right at   the beginning because it's a little intimidating  so go ahead and click the link in the description   join the family Tech server and you can ask  questions about Discord you can ask questions   about parenting technology you can ask questions  about smart home advice there's a lot of things   you can do in the family Tech server and hopefully  I'll walk you through exactly how to do that and   once you know how to use Discord and how to use  all of those settings then you'll be able to   guide your child as they use Discord so I highly  recommend joining the family Tech server getting   the advice you need and you might find a community  of people who are just going through exact same   things that you are the other thing I will say  about joining Discord is that pretty soon Discord   is actually going to be releasing some built-in  parental controls this is going to allow you to   see what servers your children are joining who  they're communicating with and a little bit more   but you do have to have a Discord account in order  to set up those parental controls because as the   parent your Discord account will invite your child  Discord account and then they will have to accept   that invite and then you'll be able to Monitor and  control their account so make sure you're joining   Discord you're learning how to use it join the fam  family Tech server in a really low-key environment   to help you get to know the platform and then  you can help guide your child set up the parental   controls for when they are ready to get Discord  so as I mentioned I'm having a lot of fun actually   on Discord it is a really great place to find  Community I'm finding that I like it better than   Facebook groups I like it better than Reddit so I  really am enjoying using the Discord platform I'd   really want to help other parents understand this  platform because it is a platform that kids are   really gravitating towards and using a lot so I  want to make sure you understand how to use it so   you can better protect your children if you found  this video useful please like it and subscribe to   this channel I am available on Discord if you  want to ask me any questions I'm also available   on all social platforms I am at Family Tech go  ahead and direct message me over there and I will   answer those questions there as well they thank  you for watching and we will see you next time foreign
