what is differential pinion depth why is pinion depth important pinion depth is the measured value from the center of the ring gear to the top of the drive pinion draw a line through the center of the ring gear draw a second line across the top of the drive pinion gear measure the distance between the two this is known as pinion depth measured value for the purpose of this training let's give this measured value an imaginary value of 2 inches and 578 thousandths of an inch why is proper pinion depth important the goal is to make sure to maximize the tooth contact between both gears this ensures both gears contact each other in the center of the tooth proper contact means a tooth can handle the torque as it transfers from one gear to the next where the gears touch each other is called the contact patch the goal of proper pinion depth is to ensure that the contact patch on the ring gear is centered what happens if there's too much pinion depth the head of the pinion is too far away from the rain gear center line and the measured depth is larger than ideal the ideal value is known as the pinion depth specification the pinion depth gear teeth now make contact on the outer edge of the ring gear teeth the outer edge of the ring gear teeth is also called the toothed heel if we could see the contact patch on the ring gear it would show contact high and on the heel of the ring gear tooth if pinion depth is less than ideal the pinion gear tooth would contact the ring gear tooth too close to the edge of the ring gear center this is called the toe of the tooth if we could see the contact patch on the ring gear it would show contact low and on the toe of the ring gear tooth it's easy to see how contact with the ring gear is affected by comparing too much too little and just right pinion depths too much or too little contact reduces tooth contact's surface area which will reduce how much load the gear tooth can handle additionally improper contact can cause excessive gear noise under driving conditions
