What If You Were Hit By a Nuclear Bomb?

Nuclear weapons are the most powerful and destructive weapons that mankind has invented. With thousands of nuclear weapons currently stockpiled by a number of countries around the world, there is more than enough destructive power out there to end all life on the planet many times over. We’ve been lucky to avoid all out nuclear war so far, but just what would happen in the event that nuclear weapons were used? How big would the blasts be and what would happen to your body if you were unfortunate enough to be at ground zero? The only nuclear weapons to have actually been used in war were by the United States during World War Two. The bombs dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki completely destroyed everything within a roughly one mile radius and caused huge fires for several more. Since then we’ve only made the weapons bigger and more powerful. U.S. submarines currently carry warheads more than twenty times as powerful as those dropped on Japan. These weapons would completely destroy everything within a three mile radius and cause serious damage for up to ten miles from the center of the blast. But these are next to nothing compared to the most powerful bomb ever tested, the Soviet “Tsar Bomba.” Containing the power equivalent to fifty megatons of TNT, this single weapon would destroy everything within a thirty mile radius and the effects of the shockwave could be felt almost two hundred miles away. While the size of these explosions vary depending on the size of the weapon, the results for those at ground zero are largely the same. The energy released by the fissile nuclear material going critical is so immense, there’s almost nothing that could survive the direct blast. The gamma radiation released is powerful enough to destroy your body at the cellular level. The thermal energy released would set your whole body on fire and instantly boil away all of the liquid in your body. Your flesh would be stripped away by the blast until just your skeleton remained which would also be destroyed by shock waves. The only good news is that it all happens fast enough that you would have no idea what was going on. Nuclear war continues to be a very real threat and there would be terrifying consequences if a modern weapon was ever used. Let’s hope that our luck continues and we never have to see the results for ourselves.
