Everyday we’re surrounded by an overwhelming amount of diet advertisements, workout routines, gym memberships, recipes guaranteed to slim us down, and much much more. But what if you decided to embark on your own diet program that was a bit more on the… well… extreme side? What if you didn’t eat for an entire week? How would it make you feel? How much would your body actually change after seven days of no food? And most important of all, is it dangerous? First let’s talk about water. No matter what your goal is, you still absolutely have to consume water. Your body needs water to flush itself of waste, regulate temperature, along with a ton of other important processes and humans can only survive about three or four days max without it. So no water will definitely not be part of this challenge. At the beginning it may seem impossible to imagine not eating for an entire week. Most of us eat around three meals a day with the occasional snack or two or ten in between. And sometimes even on days where you’re consuming a normal amount of food, you may find yourself getting hungry pretty quick! Once you subject yourself to a diet of not eating, also known as a fast, it will take around eight hours for your body to start operating differently. Before that your body was still expecting to receive the same amount of food as usual. This is why you may feel the most hungry or even like you’re starving in the first hours and days of a fast. Now let’s look at how the body actually uses food. When you consume food, the body breaks it down and uses it for a variety of things. The primary result of that breakdown is glucose, which your body then uses as energy. But if there’s no food coming into the body, then no glucose can be generated from the food! So instead, the body begins transforming glycogen, which comes from other parts of your body such as your muscles and liver, into glucose. Eventually, those sources of glucose production will also run out! And once again your body will begin processing something else to convert into energy. At this point it will likely be fats and proteins stored in the body, which can provide energy for roughly three days. But after that short time period, the body will make a huge safety adjustment and begin a process known as ketosis. Ketosis is the process that most people visually associate with a fast and not eating. Essentially in order to prevent extreme muscle and lean tissue loss, the body begins the conversion of fat stores into ketones. By doing this, people experience extreme weight loss in a short time period. Depending on how much body fat you have, this process can last longer or shorter. Once the excessive body fat is burned away, the body will revert back to breaking down muscle tissue which is likely the last store of energy left in the body. At the end of the week, depending on your initial size prior to the fast, there will be a noticeable difference in your physical appearance and a significant loss in weight. You may be tempted to go even longer, but keep in mind that the longest most people can last without food is between 40 and 60 days. And that’s if you have proper hydration for the duration. After the fast is complete you won’t be able to immediately eat the same amount of food that you ate before. You should start the process of introducing food slowly by consuming healthy foods such as fruits or vegetables, and gradually increase as you feel comfortable. Although there can be positive results from fasting, you should always consult a doctor, or a professional who is very familiar with your personal health, prior to attempting a fast lasting a week. Sometimes fasting can be dangerous if there’s underlying health issues that you may not be aware of and can cause permanent damage to your body or even death. No matter what, educating yourself on the different diets isn't a bad thing. Just be smart about it! And don’t do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. Trust your body!
