and now as my final act of vengeance on Rome I shall drink this poison whoa whoa whoa see that guy right there looks like he's hit rock bottom well guess what that guy's actually me it all started in the fall of 202 BC hello and welcome to part 3 of the Hannibal series with Quillin a history and ancient history guy if you haven't watched parts 1 and 2 on their channels yet make sure to check them out links will be in the description now on to the video after his defeat at Zama Hannibal was still only in his early 40s so as per usual went through a midlife crisis and decided to turn to politics the war with Rome had left Carthage stripped of its empire and burdened with debt a pretty similar situation to interwar Germany but instead of turning into an angry little Punic Hitler Hannibal decided to get to work fixing the problem he was originally worried about being able to pay off that massive debt but soon made an interesting discovery Bamako could uh could could you come in here please yeah what is this uh it's uh it's it's a pile of yellow Legos Legos haven't even been invented yet this is clearly gold you haven't even been invented yet I mean what this is very office I understand turns out that many members of the Carthaginian government had been embezzling funds and therefore had kept much needed gold away from the war effort the good news was that now Carthage had more than enough money to pay off its debt to Rome Hannibal then went to town on Carthaginian politics he introduced elections reduce a term limit on oligarchs from life to a single year and forced many other limits and refinements of power all this political wizardry did wonders to the Carthaginian economy but didn't exactly make Hannibal popular with the rich and powerful by this point they were probably hanging out in dimly lit smo tearooms plotting his murder or something you know just like normal rich people stuff after about seven years of the spectacular recovery the Romans were like wait our archenemy is in control of Carthage again why are we letting this happen why are they rich again why is gasoline called gas if it's actually a liquid I mean come on that's super misleading so the Romans sent a diplomatic mission to Carthage and demanded an audience hello it's um it's us again um look uh remember that guy that we were fighting like seven years ago sorry he's pretty okie and we were maybe just borrow him okay thank you thank you the rest of his life excuse me yeah sure he's kind of a buzzkill anyway wait a minute where'd he go what we've been duped Hannibal knew that he had a lot of enemies in Carthage that would happily turn him over to Rome so he decided to take a little unplanned road trip to the Middle East no no that's a sentence you probably wanted here today his first stop was the metropolis of Tyre mother city of Carthage but none of my sources said what he did there so I guess we're just supposed to assume that he hung out and then got bored or something and left next he went to Antioch presumably expecting to meet the Saluki king antiochus there but turns out that he was in Ephesus so that's where Hannibal went next now Antiochus knew that his empire was currently just a knockoff of Alexander's so he figured he'd changed that by declaring war on Rome and taking back Asia Minor in Greece because of this he was more than happy to welcome Hannibal into his court hey bro do you like my army yeah it's some pretty cool I guess yeah okay new idea what if you give me an army and then let me go back to southern Italy and kill some more Romans oh yeah i'll send you back to Phoenicia and you can raise a fleet to fight the Romans that see it wait that's not at all what I said okay new idea how about you shut up and listen to me needless to say since naval combat didn't include large terrestrial mammals or chili hills to cross Hannibal wasn't super great at it and ended up getting defeated by Rome's ally Rhodes Antiochus did it fare any better on land and was decisively defeated by the Romans at magnesia and sued for peace Hannibal figured that the Romans would probably ask Antiochus to turn him over as part of the peace treaty so he hid skirts again and fled to either our may near Crete we don't really know before finally ending up in Bithynia another enemy of Rome Metheny Oh was currently fighting Pergamon an ally of Rome and the bethey nyan King decided to put Hannibal in charge of another fleet this time however Hannibal would do things differently all right guys I need you to find some snakes and put them in these pots you got it boss what are you doing I he said to pick up all the snakes dude I told your mom where you were hiding like 20 years ago that's the only snaky thing that uh last time I checked snakes didn't talk now get in the pot oh look an unintentional rhyme scheme snakes didn't talk now get in the pot snakes didn't talk now get in the pot Hannibal then took these snake pots and catapulted them onto the enemy ships when the pot shattered the snakes were released plate am I am I supposed to make some witty comment or just hiss Jesus okay it's this tactic apparently works pretty well so uh pretty cool during the war Hannibal also got to command a few armies and won all the battles that he fought on land however those pesky Romans just wouldn't go away and they intervened in the war and demanded that bethey Nia handover Hannibal to them when Hannibal heard the news he decided that enough was enough and just straight-up killed himself he drank some poison that he'd been carrying around with him in case the Romans ever captured him and left a letter that said let us relieve the Romans from this anxiety they have so long experienced since they think it tries their patience too much to wait for an old man's death so uh in conclusion pretty cool guy remember to check out part one on quilling inks channel in part two on ancient history guys channel thanks for watching [Music]
