What happened to DUDLEY MOORE

Dudley Stewart John Moore was born April 19th 1935 in London England his mother a Christian Scientist was wracked with guilt when she discovered that his feet were facing inward requiring surgeries that left more with one leg two inches shorter than the other and I think I was in the matter of hospitals till I was what sent them to my mother said well during a hospital stay when he was five years old a nurse kissed him it was the first time he had received any sort of motherly love I suppose her bottom I thought something wrong I don't know my family used to appear at the bottom of the bed every two or three weeks it seemed more later learned that his mother had seriously considered drowning him after he was born in order to save him from the suffering he would endure during childhood Moore was bullied by his schoolmates he learned to deflect the taunts with comedy an armor that he would wear for the remainder of his life I couldn't believe the hostility you know that goes on between kids I should always remember that bit taunting while in school Moore began to take an interest in music despite her inattention Moore's mother managed to get him to take piano lessons at age 11 he earned a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music where he became so proficient in music that he was offered a scholarship to Magdalen College Oxford where he played the organ in the Cathedral there was a letter saying that I had won the scholarship I couldn't really believe it my mother went flying down the road with this letter in her after graduating college in 1958 more toward Britain and the United States with the Vic Lewis jazz band in 1960 he was invited to appear in a comedy revue to be titled Beyond the Fringe alongside Peter Cook [Music] beyond the fringe found instant success the BBC took note of Moore's charisma and offered him his own series not only but also you don't have to have another suit with you more invited Peter Cook to guest star on the first episode their comedic chemistry made cook a permanent fixture on the series in the late 1960s the duo attempted to turn their TV partnership into a film career with mild success moves in a very mysterious way you know that's terrible so they returned to the stage in 1971 with behind the fridge Marcion came to school my god I had no idea how time flies it's my moment there that high the next moment that in 1973 the show renamed good evening made us to view in New York City where it garnered Tony and Grammy Awards while in New York Moore met actress Tuesday Weld whom he married in 1975 around that time Moore's partnership with Peter Cook was becoming strained due to cooks excessive drinking after separating from weld in 1978 Moore moved to Hollywood despite his increasing success Moore never managed to shake off the pain of his childhood and was plagued by depression so he would routinely attend therapy sessions during one such group therapy session he met director Blake Edwards who cast him in his new film 10 north portrayal of a sexually fixated lover stoned on amphetamines and double brandies made him a star and a sex symbol his newfound glamour led to two more short-lived marriages more eventually confessed that he was probably impossible to stay married to and not the best father I'm not really your organic father and I'm sort of guilty of not really being around blunders I guess I'm just teaching him what I know in 1980 Moore was cast in his most famous role as Arthur a film about an inebriated and clueless rich man what'd you have in mind although not a heavy drinker Moore played the perfect drunk infusing his character with warmth and believability people greet me as Arthur all over the place they expect me to be Arthur which I never am Arthur was a great role and a once-in-a-lifetime thing we least in 1981 Arthur was an enormous hit for which Moore won a Golden Globe for Best Actor and received an Oscar nomination how nice it is to hold a heavy foreign object in one's right hand for once more made over a dozen films in the following decade including lovesick unfaithfully yours and Mickey and Maude none of which matched the success of Arthur in 1995 Moore was devastated to learn of the sudden death of his comedy partner Peter cook at cooks memorial service in London those who knew him noted that he was behaving strangely and attributed it to grief or drinking a few months later he began filming the mirror has two faces with Barbara Streisand Streisand became concerned when Moore couldn't remember his lines and he was eventually replaced by another actor tabloids began to speculate that Moore had developed a drinking problem which he found deeply hurtful Moore retreated into his music and went on tour with Reena fricked a concert pianist and writer who had interviewed him years earlier and become a close friend while on tour Bruckner noticed that Moore was having problems with his fingers followed by slurred speech Moore was eventually diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy a neurodegenerative disease caused by toxic buildup of misfolded proteins in the brain I'm not intoxicated I'm terrified he would end up alone with no one to watch over him Moore purchased a modest house next door to Reena and her husband in Plainfield New Jersey she promised more that she would care for him until the end he had endless compassion for me on March 27th 2002 Dudley Moore succumb to his illness he was 66 years old his final words were I can hear the music all around me Moore was interred at hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains New Jersey [Music] [Applause] it's like me [Music] they're like I am I think that you know I've live in a way that a fairly isolated life in in my life generally it's it's been for the purpose of becoming isolated that's why it's nice to work in film because you can be amongst a lot of people men I suppose how I felt about things Dudley Morris inauspicious childhood marked him for a life of depression but the immensely talented musical genius transcended that interior pain and projected a light that made audiences all over the world smile the minute Moore walked
