What does a Signal Maintainer do?

[Music] Hello my name is Yadunandan Jaipaul. I'm a signal maintainer for New York City Transit. Normally the location of signals that I cover is between West 4th street and 34th and 6th. The main purpose of signals is to tell our train operators when to go, when to stop that way we also have a safe distance between trains so that no trains can collide, no one can get hurt. The main purpose is to keep our riding public safe. An example of our daily duties as Signal Maintainers include servicing signals, servicing switches, inspecting relays, doing testing. You're basically doing preventive maintenance to ensure that that piece of equipment does not fail and cause any type of delays in the future. Working on the roadbed we face a lot of different hazards which include working under live train traffic and working around live electricity. Being that the subway system was built by 3 different companies there are many different types of signals, switches, relays and other components that make up the subway system. This makes the job that much more challenging but it is a challenge that I do enjoy. [Music]
