hi folks and welcome to the vintage watch collector for those of you starting out on your watch collecting Avenger you probably have at least one mechanical watch in your collection you may have seen written on the front of your watch words such as 17 jul 21 June but have you ever wondered what they mean I know I have and having found out I thought that I make this video to inform my fellow collectors who don't already know I've opened up the back of my watch here and inside you can see the compton gerd grinding away the thing though is that their movement inside the watch causes friction you can of course use oil to reduce the friction but when the oil breaks down you're going to get damaged to the wash movement when metal rods begin to metal to combat this watch makers began to use dual bearing between the moving part as the bearings were originally made of precious stone they became known as jewels these jewels would originally have been made of diamonds rubies or sapphires these were chosen because there are hard and therefore wear very slowly the nowadays these jewels are of a man-made material known as corundum it is a number of these bearings for jewel inside a watches movement but gives it its name let's look at these jewels now the majority but not all jewels inside of watch will be doughnut shaped like these ones by fitting the shaft of the watch's gear inside a doughnut shaped jewel mouthless can be maintained when the gear is turning the doughnut shape also performs the function of holding any lubricating oil inside the ring instead of it going everywhere inside the box there are also other shape tools such as capsules which do not have holes drilled through them they serve the purpose of preventing axles moving up and down dual bearings also play an important part and shock absorption such has been the patented Inca block system where the end stone and dual bearing are spring mounted so that they can absorb shots the most common form of movement found inside a hand well mechanical watch without any complication is the 17 jewelry for complications such as a chronograph or an automatic movement and add more jewels to a movement so to sum up then using jewels inside a watch increases the regularity of the running and thereby keeping it accurate as they lessen friction and help to absorb shocks they greatly increase the lifetime of watch did you know that the most number of jewels found inside of the watches movement was in the walls and 100 which had you guessed it one hundred jewels however eighty-three of these were non-functioning and was set to around the outside of the movie nowadays there is an IFO international standard for jewel which states that the jewels inside a watches movement must be functioning at reducing friction and wear that's it from me for now this is roger from the vintage watch collector see you next time
