[Music] welcome into the Toyota Lounge for the dmvr Avalanche podcast powered by your Front Range Toyota dealerships well the ABS are not playing hockey anymore there are four teams that are playing hockey still let me ask you guys a question that might be a little bit loaded are all four teams left in the playoffs better than the Colorado Avalanche good question yes all all four I think at least three of them are yeah I agree I take it back three I think three have been more consistent yeah it's a consistency thing by the way the fourth one I mean I think we all know who the four two be clear the three are Dallas New York and Florida yeah yes okay we're good I know there's some Edmonton fan that's going to like come in the comments and so be very very angry and there's a reason Edmonton is in the conference final but yeah they had the easiest path yeah they got to play Vancouver without Demco in round two in Nashville it's just the overall construction of the other teams is so much stronger and I think we're seeing that even with how this is unfolding no doubt Dallas leading that series 2-1 they play tonight so Dallas the team ahead there if they just get more power plays it'll be fine that's a it's a tough ask this deep into the playoffs to ask for more power plays La edmon played La I don't know why I was thinking about Nashville yeah it's Vancouver that played Nashville yeah was so bad for the third straight year was so forgettable I forgot it happened I forgot that caps in New York happened so so did the Caps I hope yeah I think the Rangers probably did too the entire league was just like they shouldn't be here this is just a warmup for the second round for you guys it's tough some tough first round yeah we are we are really this is how we opened the show this is a roast this look you got to you got to start with the little bit roasting cuz I think a lot of this show is going to be about yeah what the ABS Can Can Do Better what they can learn from some of these teams that are still in the playoffs before we do dive into that though I wanted to get a little bit into these two series more specifically New York and Florida which has kind of been a knockdown drag out series you've multiple three three straight overtimes is it I think uh New York taking two of them Florida taking this most recent one last night frustrating to watch yeah yeah because the way that uh the way that they want it is on that play that they run on the power play It's the play all the time it's the one play where Sam R heart's open exactly I've been talking to Eric about it all year and I just can't believe that a team that good is like yeah we'll give it to him not that you obviously like purposely give it to him but I know you have to you have to sell out to make sure that that's not what is going to beat you top bullet point on your penalty kill list is that pleas don't let them do this thing that they did it's like oetkin 800 goals from the dog from the top of the circle don't let him do it and he does it you know that one's different because that is a singular Talent from a guy this is a they run this play all the time as it was unfolding I was like oh here it comes oh there it is oh the game is over like Sam rard had a 50 goal season because of that play yep it blew my mind watching it like you have to you just have to sell out to make sure that's not what you allow anyway easy for me to say on this chair just don't allow it obviously yeah what are you doing the yard goats w't allow it exactly looking at this series though you're to that tide 2 two it's a best of three now who do you guys think has the edge Florida or New York New York obviously having home ICE if you're really split 50/50 maybe that's the difference uh I'll go first um here's what I'll say and that's the beauty of playoffs and that's the fun the adrenaline the rush so if you're if you're the Rangers and you're Chris jury and the coaches and you going on to B is there a game tonight no that was last night so tonight you go on to bed and you're like you either can't sleep because you're like oh my God my core guys aren't producing they're all in the slum right I mean they all are I mean besides zage J given the assist of the wrong team yesterday you know what I mean but uh again we've all been there I'm just saying it's bad bad luck but um boy oh boy you got to get nervous and say man are they going to get going or on the flipside you sleep like a baby because you're like they'll wake up we're going to be fine they haven't done crap and it's still 22 in the series right I mean because freaking they haven't done anything the top guys sherin's done his job you know in my mind well you do a couple more games of not doing anything and near the AVS so that that but it and it does happen and that's why I say drewy slipping tonight and he's like it's one of the two right he's either wi awake cuz he's like Oh They'll wake up or he's like holy snis they're not waking up and you're in deep poooo and then you know I think Florida's I mean I think they're loose man I think Paul Maurice is so loose and I know they're making a a big deal out of it this postseason with his interviews and everything but he's always been that way he's a witty guy sharp guy um been around long enough freak he was coaching in this league at 28 years old so which is a rarity especially back then there was all dinosaurs behind the bench right so but I think they're very loose they're very loose and but the gold tending has been superb I mean anybody can steal a game one of those two teams so yeah I think it's a two out of three that's going seven um I don't remember who I picked I think we all picked Florida didn't we all pick Florida no no you pick Rangers yeah okay I I I think it's going to come down to the down the stretch but it's fun to see the freaking Garden happening and MSG and and then the the the Florida obviously it's alive now it's been a couple years now that's it was so dead for so many years it was a dead Market fun Series right now like I said but you got to think the ranger core guys are going to wake up at some point I mean or like you said they can be the Avalanche and dead in the water I think I have Florida coming out of it in seven games and it's just been how Florida has stacked up on paper through these games even the ones that they've lost out of Regulation mind you they've all been really close games so this is going to be a tight series no matter what I would just as easily believe New York comes out of it but I give Florida The Edge because of what they have consistently done with their possession game 5v5 creating opportunities like the shot ofs coming out of I want to say game three into game four let me see yeah I think you're right yeah 108 to 43 it's just been tilted a little bit in Florida's favor um you know I think goal tending has been a huge difference maker and on the New York side special teams has harmed them you know Florida's been pretty study both power play PK whereas their power play just hasn't gotten really going for New York um and because they're not getting some of the scoring contributions from the top players the way that they expected I think that Florida can weather that storm you know I I think that systemically the way that they're playing they're really dialed in to what they're doing it's very I talked about synchronicities um they're very in sync with one another and I think that overall too both two well constructed teams I still favor Florida's defense I think it was something you called out in the preview as well but like I think trouba has struggled for New York defensively and that's a top guy that they need to be going and so I think that has harmed kind of the overall I still think New York defensively is a sound team it's something I shouted them out in the round table piece too that there is a Common Thread between these teams whether it be the overall depth that they bring to to the table or the team defense that they bring to the table two great teams New York and Florida but I just have give Florida the slight edge with a couple of those things I mentioned it's to me Florida has been the better team on the ice series is tied two two I think Florida has played better except for the guy in net right now eigor schurin is out playing Sergey brovsky in this series in my opinion obviously the Florida gets it over the line last night but it to me unless eigor can keep it up and maybe he can I'm not saying he can't but if New York absolutely needs eagor to keep it up to win this series whereas if Florida gets Bob to play a little bit better I don't know how they lose yeah so I mean eagor has been great this postseason yeah absolutely so you know we're we're six weeks into him keeping it up yep and he's their obvious K Smite guy right now so not a complicated conversation yeah it really for for the Rangers it's eigor just continues yep well like cder you know he got that three-goal game then he hasn't and all three goals were the most Cris krier thing you've ever seen in your life yeah yeah I'll give Florida to the swag and I think like I said it comes down from Paul Maurice but if you look at Matthew's interview yesterday he's saying to about the mouthpiece that was throwing right he said reminds me a little bit of wag then a little bit of like you know I I'm old school so I don't like the headlines but I don't mind when they're well said so yesterday Matthew said about cder he goes yeah he goes I told him that's the best play you made all night you know trying to throw his mouthpiece right you know which by the way if it goes into stands it's uh you get a a scond dug or something yeah it's also disgusting no I mean sometimes it's this happens you got stuck in his hand I don't think he was trying to get his mouth face but anyway I didn't know that was uh ping now you know no that's right now you know I didn't know that but anyway I like the swag I like the way it was placed I like the way it was delivered Matthews get that little smirk that little confidence that little swag and I think Florida's are Gamers you know Sammy Matthew Sammy Bennett and Matthew kachuck for hagy they weren't really there against Colorado four years ago five years ago but whatever you know they're there now um so they got I think they got you know the Lamborghini lombo I'm just saying like it they got guys that are Gamers um so does New York as well you're going to say Barkley goodro you know what I mean guys like that score big goals and that's what they do and that's what playoffs are all about you got to be able to elevate your your heart rate your emotions and everything so some good hockey we're seeing we'll see we'll see tonight what I know we're going to switch but Emington you'll see what they got you know that's you know the other the other series I think is much less interesting to talk about the series will end in five unless steuart Skinner figures it out I think that's where you start with that series well I'll jump in right now too like and you're right what you're saying there I I don't think he's I don't think he's going to figure it out I think that's who he is you know mean and that's and you know what awesome he's a good athlete and everything but it's been the same goalie all year long you know what I mean it's nothing new their problems in that are nothing new they were exposed at the start of the year then all of a sudden they got masked because they went on that freaking run of like they couldn't lose a game you win 16 games in a row paper's over a lot right and then it just kind of and then you're like oh but really did you fix your problem remember we said that at the deadline like this is not a unique story every in the playoffs there's a team where it's like maybe this is the one that can outscore their problems nope turns out you can't you need defense it's just going to go in at some point you know what I mean and you guys think Darnell nurse is really that bad no do I think he's really bad no do I think he's worth $9 million absolutely not I don't think there's any argument that but that's why not worth the 9 million but I don't think he's bad no no no I I'll take him I'll take you can't take him at that price that's a bad that's why I don't and unfortunately in this business you're tied into your contract it just is because of the salary cap so that's why I would say I don't like him I like that he's ten so I like what he brings I'm not saying that I just don't like his salary for what he brings I mean he's a number three on that team and he's fine in that role except for the $ n million yeah and he's tied too often to Cody CeCe who is said number seven yeah boy you want to know what Jack Johnson would look like if Jack Johnson was playing on your second pairing that's it Cody CCE he a lefty I mean Jack's a lefty he's a right well don't have a Cody CC on your bottom pairing in or second pairing even instead put a Toyota there why not go get yourself it be reliable that's what I'm saying you know what you're going to get out of your Toyota it's got all wheel drive which is more than Dar Darnell nurse can say that dude can barely stand up half the time it feels like in these Edmonton Dallas series I know we didn't really get too far into it but I think I think you see a out of this world performance tonight by McDavid and that lock right I think he's locked in he's he was answering questions yesterday about like you know nurse especially and I thought it was awesome and he's really not that guy usually you know so I don't know again that'd be fun as a hockey fan you want to make sure that it's 22 after tonight not 3-1 you know he's theiron SMI guy oh yeah I don't think it's all that close on that side yeah sorry Leon all right let's let's widen out take a bigger Avalanche colored lens here and we talked about this in our round table today by the way if you're a Die Hard go check it out uh go take a look at a bunch of questions about the playoffs and the ABS offseason that we answered for Colorado looking at four teams what is the number one thing you think the ABS can take away from these teams and do better you got to be better defensively okay um and I just think for the ABS and they weren't bad defensively they just weren't good enough defensively sure and to win a Stanley Cup you have to be great in your own end merely being good isn't good enough and uh I their top pairing didn't play as well as we've seen in the past so I just think part of that is those guys just will play better like there's a reality there where you're you're tied to those two guys you also saw especially as the playoffs went on Sean Walker on your bottom pairing struggled yeah and Jack Johnson shouldn't be on an NHL team um so like you have what I kind of wrote about in in the round table about this um specifically is that that bottom pairing kind of Illustrated the struggle of building out that depth because Jack Johnson kind of fits their needs but doesn't fit their style and Shawn Walker fits their style but not really their needs and so you had two guys that were kind of a little a little bit of miscast yeah mashed together and they just weren't very good so um you know and and Gerard Manson their lows were really low and their highs just weren't quite high enough but that bottom pairing was bad and individually they were bad together they were bad I just think you need you need somebody you need at least one of those guys to be reliable a reliable guy that he's not overwhelmingly good but can handle in front of his own net cuz that's where the ABS break down the most defensively is right in front of their own net their season ended on one of those breakdowns it did Megan I know you had a similar answer in the round table yeah and it's the totality in the construction of the decoy right it's not calling out Taves and marar who are still The toppest of top end but one through six that's where the complete picture isn't strong enough cuz it's not even you look at the second pair of man and Gerard that's also not bad and that's where I think it it needs retooling though is because you look at one through four in Dallas and they were better defensively coming out of the first round you could see that in the results that their top four on D produced defensively they were just so sound that is where I think you look at like 2 through six in Colorado that's where there's question marks and that's not to say like in Dallas the bottom of their deep pairs there weren't question marks either but 1 through four was so good defensively I think it helped the overall because so much of what Dallas did so well was their Lane management and not allowing things like I'm thinking I'm imagining Conor McDavid like in Red Rover just one guy being sent over into a chain of people and it being incredibly hard to penetrate because that was the case for Colorado's top stars with how well Dallas worked together to defend y I look at the top four on their backend kind of leading the charge with some of that but then the overall team defense too being a part of that and I just think that we talked about this a little bit in you know should Manson or Gerard be players that they consider moving on from and it's not that I'm so quick to part ways with either of those players because they are second PA defenseman around the league it's just the complete picture like they sacrificed too much in what was allowed on the third pair and the stylistic fit didn't make sense what Jack Johnson is on that third pair didn't make sense with what Shawn Walker is and it's the totality of it then that I think held the ABS back I think it holds Ma and Taves back too just to be clear you talk about load management and the type of minutes that those players are eating up because there isn't trust in that third pairing and that's going to have the type of result that we saw through two rounds I love your topic and I want to drill down onto it a little bit more specifically Josh Manson and then the bottom pairing when the a went out and got Josh Manson two years ago there wasn't any secrets it was the conversation immediately was Josh Manson's really good but he's prone to the oopsie he'll make the big mistake and you can live with that but if you understand that you have that guy on your second pairing guess what you need to build the third pairing that you can play reliably so if Josh Manson is having an oopsy night you can play the third pairing yeah and the ABS did not have a third pairing that they could trust at all yeah so they didn't really build to their personnel effectively on that defensive side as as you pointed out Megan it's the entire concept it's not just one guy oh Josh Manson made mistakes oh Johnson and Walker were bad together it's the whole system had a fracture in it Eric you on the uh the ABD train needs to get better or are you on something else no what I'm trying to see if you're your question was compared to those four teams right you know um Rangers won the President's trophy there's a reason for that they were the most consistent team they were you know what I mean like all year long um Florida that you have that strong start then they had that dip a little bit but when you build a kushion like that kind of like the ABS did you know you can falter a little bit and might cost you home ice like you saw the ABS Emington is just an anomal it's not normal like you know to lose 20 games and win 20 games I mean just wasn't you don't see it's not normal like so what I'll say is and you going to throw the daggers at me for it but um I don't think the apps are that bad were that bad I I think that no they were top that's what I'm saying if when not that I'm not saying it's negative I'm saying on compared on the final four you know what I mean I think if they had stronger go tending because they didn't give up that much they would be in the final four I'm going to do the opposite of throw daggers cuz this is what I said in the round table oh okay I didn't read it no but you know me I was driving I didn't read it so um when I say dagger I'm just saying like and I'm not trying to get on gor gif's case I I think it's an average goalie at best you know so but if the as that that again what's Mr stur can make eight I have no idea it wouldn't fit in their cap you that's what I'm trying say so so something has to what I'm saying is you're going to give uh chances you're going to make mistakes uh but usually the guys that are nominated for the vzo trophy are the ones that clean up that mess so it's a little bit masked you know so the New York Rangers it's not like they had an unbelievable year where they didn't give up anything it was cleaned up by one of the best goalies in the league and I know he had his ups and downs too and then all of a sudden quick came in and he went on a freaking 10 game Run didn't lose a game and you know go tending can cure a lot of things it can average ABS at average go tending at best all year long you know what I mean so it's like it didn't cure anything it it really didn't cure anything it exposed it you know what I mean and and that's that's the for me that's the reality it's really easy for me too and and again there are loads of other problems the Avalanche have their lack of ability to produce offense in the Dallas series cost them dearly yep but look at the goal he's still in the league you have shurkin who at a nine I don't know last night probably changed it but was at a 925 before last night aer's at a 923 the steuart Skinner's at an 890 something and that's why none of us believe in Edmonton and uh Bob is at it was a 905 and has now gone up gorg have finished the playoffs at 897 oh but all that was that one B okay take away the first game it's still only a 910 and if you take away the worst game of every other goalie in the playoffs how much better are they not that much better because gor gv's worst game was cataclysmically bad historically bad but to reinforce my point four of the six games against Dallas Sub 900 it's the problem when you just look at the box score though because I get it the defense was bad too well there were a couple of games where it was like I don't I don't want to fight about this dude I'm not I'm not making the argument that gorv was terrible because I don't think he was but I do think if he could make one B one more save a couple of those games might have been a different conversation he's certainly not a strength of their team how's that that's it yep and and to me I'm not going to say it's a solvable issue because I don't know that there's really any great goenda this offseason or anything that they can afford for sure but that's something that you can at least look at in the future one way or another whereas you know what if your top players fail to produce in a series then you're going down with that ship it's just the reality of the Colorado Avalanche if McKinnon moo and Ma struggle to produce then you lose you can't fix that you just hope that uh they play to their ability next time you got McDavid ICD on on bu bomb right now and they can't figure out because of what average gold tending at best you still need good go tending in this league you you need it you need good I I I don't care if you like haen Hill or not last year he was freaking good he was great like you know I mean so good go tending is not you need good to Great Goen you know average you're seeing what you're seeing right now with Skinner it's the same thing and those like don't get me wrong the goal tending and the defense are intrinsically tied together sure those two things raise and lower each other up so you know improving one almost certainly improves the other it does that's the big takeaway for why the ABS are sitting at home and at least three of these four teams are still in the playoffs I don't know I I don't want to make too much of it either because also don't have your Norris trophy finalist defenseman just ghost the middle of your Series yeah don't have Nathan McKinnon and moo don't have Miko Ranon in and have have more awful games than great ones in your postseason totally valid like you need you need better out of those but you look at that problem and you go they just have to play better you can't fix that yeah it feels like there's a couple things at play one that's a battle of will like because every team has its star players that are faced with a similar Challenge and in Stanley cut playoff games they're so tight that everybody has to overcome a little bit of that adversity right the chances are going to be harder to come by that's true for everybody's top Stars I think that's just where the will for the top guys for Colorado to power through that was outmatched by Dallas's well and some of that I think was they had better depth I was question questioning of it side by side look you know Dallas had the edge but I thought Colorado could keep compete with it based on the deadline that they had but the depth also helped because everybody was run the boat in the same direction I talked about this in the piece but it starts you know the rhythm of that starts with the leadership and I just don't think they had the land of SC effect I think that really really harmed them in this series and it wasn't enough alone in the hands of the leadership group there to set a rhythm for the others to follow because I think when they looked at their best they were also the most competitive throughout the entirety of the lineup right like you saw contributions from third and fourth line players in the Winnipeg series and that's when it looked like everybody was working together I think that losing to chushan fractured the team in a way that's undeniable yeah and you see that in how they play like you look at issues that plague them and it's execution issues and that's where the will to power through that I think you know that's where they get outmatched opposite of Dallas um and so I think it's important not only to prioritize depth maybe sooner in the season it was a great deadline but I can't help but wonder if they had spent more time with the team would they have looked more in sync by the end of it because I think that's something like I'm talking about Dallas a lot and it's because I think Dallas has done so many things well in this post season dictated the series right to earn me talking about them kind of as the model that I'm looking to especially because they're who ousted the apps but the other thing too is the Homegrown talent in Dallas that allows them to more affordably put together a complete lineup and that's where I think they afforded the depth that they had because of some of the players that were brought up through the organization you know like you look at one through four on the back end and there's Thomas Harley that's just not really an option that the ABS had to construct one through six and on their back end and then even looking inside their depth you know you you have Logan stankoven Step Up When rupe hint goes out of the lineup in a huge way as just didn't quite have that in the bag with their depth options guys who've come up through the organizations know their systems in and out uh in the same way that I think it costs them their synchronicity I think it it cost them their Rhythm and being able to play together as a fiveman unit and so I would also talk about depth as a priority going into the start of the season to get these guys comfortable and jelling for the entirety of it PS if Casey midat wants to take 2 million under his expected value like J rob did that was I don't know how he agreed to that I don't who's his Adrian yes that's the contract was bad the second it was signed C bad for the player that is uh anyway on that note we are presented by Underdog fantasy make puck whether that be defense or goal tending needs Improvement for Colorado to be one of these final four teams you also need I mean we don't like talking about it just because it sucks dude it does but it's also a reality of human beings yeah you also lose valich the game the way like the game for Fiasco the way that it all played out is a free game for them in the postseason mhm like that's the that was by far the worst game of the of the series not even close yeah and the rest of this the rest of the games in the series were actually pretty close yep at one point or you know like obviously game two was a little bit of an interesting from 4 nothing to 43 but the end of the game was still one goal exactly it's a one goal game at the end of it where there's a reasonable chance that they could tie it and and pick your poison in one Go Games defense go ending or offense yeah so but but it's losing a guy like NuSkin in that series you have you lose NuSkin you gain drwan they don't ever play a game together yep so you once again are just slightly not healthy enough obviously they get Mason marchment back but lose rupe hint yep but a team that is built on that kind of depth can absorb those impacts a little bit better it's exactly like that's that's how they're built and the ABS when you're built the way that they are when you're built from very topheavy like that you need more injury look in this case it's just really really important that you not get decimated in your bottom nine yep well look at loc look at freaking well exct was there nushin I know we talk about Gabe oh he's been gone two years no I know but there's still hope this you know what I mean so you're not you're never dealing with a full deck and you talk about death that those are freaking even if you remove 2% of your forwards I mean right there like having having Zack periz how much better is your team you lose Yakov trenin at the end of the series that's what I'm saying like there was just the dep is there it just for you like it's just that they become all those guys become that much more important when you lose them Taves gets sick yeah and and tapes is just sick randomly misses game four like it's we're talking about we're we're talking about defense and stuff but valin is your best two-way forward well he's your unicorn he's the guy that's different he's different than everybody else and he's one of the few in the league right who's there who else is out there like Zack Heyman and him like the score goals are big I don't even care about his on Ice play the emotional impact of the way it played out put it all together destroyed the Avalanche in that game for game four certainly but then you saw them respond in game five game six they played good games yeah but you you're talking about like like Val the valin just on Ice importance to them was enormous and Jonathan drwan played two pretty good games and then he wasn't very good in game six yep but you just didn't get again once again you go out of the postseason with the team that you didn't you didn't pay for that you have to watch a compromised version of it and that's that is the postseason that is like that is the postseason that is how it goes you have to and people I don't understand why people hate on this podcast when I talk about luck being a factor it's huge but it just determines so much yep you ever looked at a deflected goal in slow motion and been like yeah that was totally intentional the guy puts a stick there and hopes for the best and there are guys out there that are great at it but there is always an element of luck to this and to lose NuSkin in the way that they did in the middle of a series it it's terrible to your team to to your success not even talking about the person or any of that those elements just trying to Win Hockey games when you talk about a a what ended up being a really tight Series against Dallas overall losing Val NuSkin for the final three games of a six game series is like oh their depth scoring needs to be better oh this needs to be better that needs to be better okay yeah a lot of his is fixed by that guy being in the line well and like like you put druin and NuSkin in yep in in the same game suddenly your third and fourth lines look pretty good do they even win one more game in that series does it go to seven do they get one extra goal at the end of game like you have no you have no idea you have no idea sometimes it was just it was not a dominant Stars win no it was a good series with game four being the worst game of the series with obvious caveats there when you talk about team when you talk about defense there's also forwards to consider we know artor lean's having surgery Casey midd stack got hurt at the end of at the end of that series yep like you know there's there's a lot there there there's no Logan oconor Logan oconor cannot be the difference between you win round two and you and you're you're done but when he's one of seven different pieces but yeah but you're also talking about when you saw Logan oconor on your third line next to Ross Colton and Miles wood you had one of the best third lines in the league and without him you put y kivir Ron there kiv ronto was great against Winnipeg and that went away against Dallas and now he looked a lot more like the replacement level player that he has been in his career and that guy's on your third line every night like it's just it was the ABS the ABS needed to be better in the margins they for me I always start with look K Mar has to be better he does defensively he's just wasn't good enough this year yep regular season postseason it doesn't even matter he just wasn't good enough there Devon Taves wasn't consistent enough but yeah when you lose when you lose a series some of it's going to come on the margins like that and the ABS didn't catch any breaks and then they weren't good enough yep I think you know chat raises a great point about Dallas hitting on picks in having that benefits from luck and I think there's real acknowledgement in that but it still factors into the overall depth picture and that doesn't take away from what AJ saying like the depth Colorado had just couldn't absorb the hits that they took because again losing group a h also a big hit but the fact that their fourth third line Logan stoven can Elevate to a Topline role and succeed there in his absence is I don't want to say that's lucky I want to say that's a plan and I think that this isn't to dunk on Yol kirant but this is a player that didn't have an NHL contract to start the season on your third line and Zach periz coming out of retirement the plan was not for him to be in your top six y yeah none of this went according to plan and there was a lot of Hope in the top guys that it didn't matter that despite it not going to plan they can power through it but at some point too many things not going to plan there's not enough planning you can do to prepare for that and it caught up with Colorado and so it's not even to be highly critical of the front office I loved what they did at the deadline I think they did a lot of things to set the ABS up with better depth to better absorb these kinds of hits you know Tren and du and P in a bottom six role in place of a potentially Cog lehano and a Chris Wagner right we were having those conversations at one point like man who comes out of the lineup in that case that didn't happen yep and so it just wasn't a plan so it's not even a criticism of the front office just too many things went wrong and that's that's for every team because you can have the best plan in the world um I've been part of teams where we plan everything out there's three things you can't plan for one of them you touched on is injuries you can't yeah it just it is what it is you can only do so much you can only do so much like if you want to win the Stanley Cup those three things I'm about to say like you can't control those you don't control injuries if EO shurin gets hurt tomorrow I'm sorry but the Rangers are not winning the St it's over so Aiden Hill would like a word yeah you know what I mean but again the guy above Aiden Hill like was Aiden Hill like I mean they didn't have they weren't built on you want to talk about luck yeah so you know what like you're talking about injuries there nothing you that will derail a plan and a heartbeat uh so that's one two Puck lock I don't care what people say you can't control Puck lock and Puck lock is a real thing it freaking happens in a game there's nothing you can do and it just went like this and it hit the guy in the head and it came back and it spawn and went down the I well I don't know what to tell you it is true it is real not to bring back bad memories but Ben Myers punched a puck into his own goal in round one last there that's not no one can control that happening would go off new hook too it did yeah oers loss was like the most blacking offside punching pucks and emont Oilers it wasn't there year they would have won five in a row you know Steve Smith Just Hits freaking Fury's leg goes I mean Puck luck is a real thing you can't control that you can't plan for that hey let's have some great Puck luck tonight guys it doesn't happen [ __ ] happens and it's not like I always say it's not football it's not planned out there it's very reactionary and the puck of a mind it has a mind of its own sometimes you kidding me hit two post it hits the freaking goal line it doesn't go in by this much like really like you can't plan for that you can't you're building two things that all line up to look you need to prepare some you know injuries are going to happen but you can only prepare for so much if your backups are so good no it's three things right it's injuries it's luck it's it hey hey I'm going to tell you luck is a big part of hockey it is it is and you can build a team that can overcome some Puck luck against you but if the Puck's going bad enough you're just going to lose it's just if it wasn't your way it's not your way and then your path your path you just talked about it because you just said the EMAs are here because their path which I don't disagree with but your path has a lot to do with it ABS 1996 they might not win if freaking Pittsburgh doesn't lose to freaking Islanders right and then all of a sudden Florida beats Islanders then you go into the finals against an expansion you know team the Florida Panthers at the time so your path has a lot to do with the day you don't control you don't control that of the deadline so those It's a Grind to get there and those three things you you can't prepare for they are what they are and and I I even mentioned the fourth one which is you know someone some something you don't see much but the vow thing you know it is it's something that you sometimes you can't overcome I don't even know what to call that like a whatever a miscellaneous you know like miscellaneous works is that works yeah okay so if that those things happen then it is what it is you're not going to win it's a freaking tough It's a fine line to win in this in this league and regardless of the other three if you have something happen in the miscellaneous category it it's real hard to win pet immediately before a game yeah the forsberg thing is an interesting one because it happens after game seven before the start of the next series it's a shock having dinner with them yeah like it's a shock but there's also a day or two it's not oh hey an hour before this you're this that's what I mean no we have to be able to overcome things you do but like that one like you said it's a weird one it's right there it's right before a game and it just it was almost Sur Real you know what I mean and it's and unfortunately it became a big thing right before crucial game down 2-1 in the series and now you're down 3-1 and it's it's a tough sled I'll tell you this you don't want anything in the miscellaneous category when it comes to your roof go get yourself with red hawk Roofing get yourself checked out they'll give you a free inspection when you get them at overtime period perhaps of the dmvr Avalanche podcast this next question a little bit of a shift of Gears we all have our opinions on what the ABS need to find what the ABS need to do better can they accomplish those goals this off seon I honestly have no idea man they're they're just they're in limbo it's really easy for me to sit here and say spend the money but it's like you have no idea what happens you you get to Val's reinstatement does he get reinstated does he not can he be terminated can he not is is okay now he's out of the program did did can they terminate his contract then like what what the hell do they do I I and you have no idea what you're getting with Gabe landeskog you could feel as good as you want about his progress so far he always had no setbacks okay well three months is a lot of time for him to potentially have a set pack yeah and that's $7 million this is not $2 million in flux it's 13 right yeah it's 13 with the uncertainty of NuSkin so I honestly just don't know it's really easy for me to sit here and say spend the money it's what I would do I mean how hard is it to nudge nudge wink wink Gabe and say you know what you need to get set back about four months I I don't know man you go seven years without playing now to me it's it it blows me away that this seems to be other teams seem to be able to navigate some of this yeah that's what I'm saying we watch Vegas do it every year well and you watched Edmonton you remember a couple years ago Edmonton they were like oh Mike Smith isn't the answering goal so he's gone forever Mike Smith is retired he can never play he's not healthy enough to play again he played every game of that series that was crazy the the interview after getting eliminated from that series they're like I don't know if Mike Smith will ever play again he's he just he's too hurt it's like what he just played a Conference Finals it was insane Lou Island like Roba does any do we ever did we ever find out what the hell happened to Robin Leonard nope like he just that Snake Farm really messed him up yeah right like we found out all kinds of weird stuff about his life but like he's just been sitting on on their on on their ltir for a while now and it's just like is is he actually hurt or did they just like back in the day we used to call it robida Island cuz the stepan robida was the one that the Toronto was the first one to really do this with B him to no weel land yeah so I just I guess I just it's impossible to answer that question without considering the $13 million Cloud hanging over everybody's head if they have the $13 million to spend yeah yes they can PS if you want to see how all those possible scenarios play out I posted a video about the ABS cap situation which you should go and watch if they can't spend that money or they won't spend that money no is it really that straightforward though couch side can the ABS they may have to get creative but do you think there are paths to solving the defense the depth the goal tending whatever it is that you want to get solved this offseason outside I guess that's a no what what did you think of the question proposed to Chris McFarland about the possibility of moving a player out to create more space I'm about to give you a hockey player answer but the answer is if a move makes you better you do it no matter who yeah pretty much if it makes you better when you say no matter who if you're moving kale Mar I don't know that there's a move on the planet that makes you better and I get it's more complicated than that like but you don't just move a player out to create space and not have a plan right take what the ABS did at the trade deadline you saw the Ryan Johansson move and immediately after you saw the trigger for the bll and Byron move to bring in Casey midd stat there was a plan in place a step-by-step process to get there you don't just get rid of John mansion's $4 and half million dollar and be like okay we've got money now great well I'll tell you one thing yeah like mansion's got holes sometimes but still a freaking pretty good player you know what I mean and it's like you put someone there that's not ready and you'll see there see a lot more scoring chances against and all the goal leag couldn't do anything you're going to see a [ __ ] ton of goals against I mean I'm telling you right now cuz the ABS don't give up much so you get rid of a guy like that you don't replace that and you still got the same goalie you're in for a freaking tough sled I'll tell you that like people think it's easy it's not that easy but I fixed the goal tending I don't know how but I think it's all tied in with and you know he started a few weeks ago get answers I don't know how you get answers but he's going to get answers before we do on the situation with Gabe and on the situation with with Val because until then I said Chris jury couldn't sleep tonight like because of he doesn't know if his guys are going to wake up I freaking wouldn't want to be Chris right now not KN long for that you got going with that those are a lot of sleepless nights for what it's worth I'm not totally in favor of moving players out to make room for more money to spend only because anything that's coming back that should be equal or better value of the player being moved out is probably going to be comparable in cost and so it's probably not really saving you money and that's why I was dancing around the m rantin in trade conversations with that question I'm personally not entertaining that but I was curious if anyone here is entertaining that and what kind of return you would need to see to ever consider that if you're Colorado I just don't see and this is a a mantra that has been thrown around on this pod and Elsewhere for a long time if you're trading the best player in the trade it's really hard to win the trade yep you're almost you're very likely losing it Y and there aren't a lot of guys in the league you could be trading for that are better than Migo ranton and that's my personal perspective I also think there's components around character fit you know are they going to fit in to Colorado culturally we know that mikar anonin does even though sometimes he is a frustrating player he's a good he's a good dude 100 points yeah he's good dude top 10 player obviously one of the few Abes in that locker room that maybe helps balance the ultra seriousness of Nathan McKinnon Mo a little bit lighter hearted he's a glue guy I don't know if people realized that like the way that he approaches leadership is different but it's important in how that leadership group gets made up he had Le but he's also somebody that they take very seriously of course we can also just accept the fact that the guy just didn't have a wonderful season yep we look at his points only and we're like it was fine but we watched him play like I don't it two of their three best players had great seasons and were both saying yeah they could play a lot better yeah the only one that can't play that much better is McKinnon in the regular season absolutely but you look at Miko Ranson and you're just like look like same thing Miko Ranson and K marar like we're not ready to ship out kale M right they can play better they can just be better we like we can you know Grant him allowances and understand that he just didn't have a a great year it's funny that you know another 40 goal 100 Point season for M Ranson and we're still having that conversation too but I don't know I I just I'm very proo and maybe it's because I'm paid by state run I'm just kidding I'm sorry I'm not GNA go you everybody else is apparently all state run media so sorry going a go Evan if you're listening I'm sorry whatever you get for moo you're not going to get as good as Mo so you shouldn't do it you know because you're going to spend the next 15 years trying to find Mo again and they don't come around a lot you and that's just reality the ABS have entered this weird sphere where they're an extremely good team so anything less than a Stanley Cup is considered failure by a lot and when you get into to this people and fan bases and I don't mean anyone specific all fan bases fall victim to this every single fan base has the same you start to think oh well we got to fix this thing and we got to make it better and when you start having those conversations about guys like Meo Ranon almost exclusively by doing that you're making your team worse for the sake of making a move that's right it's it's just the reality we want to get our we want our depth to be better so we want to do is we want to trade moo ranton in for three guys that are absolutely worse y three dudes that combin will give us 90 points to compare to Miko's 100 your your in your your best case scenario is your the Jets with the plld deal last year yep which in year one they're they love they're like thank you but even then it's not like Rasmus kapari did anything in that yep uh the other guy that they got thank you was was not any good in the postseason it came down to Gabe valard like okay great do do any of us believe that mik ranin is going to get traded for anybody that could just even in a down year produce the way that M ranin does no it's insane and a team is not going to be like yes why why yes we will give up three cost controlled young players who can all make a high impact in your top nine over the next 5 years one guy for the privilege of paying this guy1 million who's lining up to do that BS if you know someone go tell Chris McFarland like you're best it's like oh hey we'll give you first round picks great you're not going to use those you're not going to you select the picks you're going to trade them for something and what you trade them for you're hoping makes up for what is good ason like it's just you're just he's too good and he doesn't have the Mitch Marner problem correct if there was something like that going on yeah there's not we'll leave it there we do have to wrap up today's show we appreciate all y'all hanging out we still got two more shows coming your way this week I don't know we might look into free agency a little bit we might save that for next week I don't know keep uh keep your eyes peeled for all of that go check out all of our other content on the dmr.ms.gov [Music] [Applause] we all sitting like the May
