i'm going to share with you exactly what we're looking for when we ask you the question what's your greatest weakness hey everybody it's brian from a life after layoff and today i want to talk to you about the age-old question what's your greatest weakness for some reason when this question is asked in an interview this tends to throw people off so i wanted to spend a few minutes covering exactly what you should and shouldn't say in order to hit this one out of the park but before we get too far into it if you're interested in more videos just like this one directly from a corporate recruiter make sure you hit the subscribe button alright so you're in the big interview you're in front of a panel of people and you get asked the question by your hiring manager what's your greatest weakness how should you answer it so in order to answer this question properly i think we need to start with what not to say so there's a few things that i would not suggest that you say and answer with in an interview setting if you're asked this question the first thing that you shouldn't say is i don't have any weaknesses because i know the hiring manager knows and you know that everybody in the room has a weakness that they could address so you're going to come across as inauthentic to the interviewing team if you say that you have no weaknesses so i recommend that you do a little bit of self-reflection before walking into the room have an idea of what weaknesses you truly have and be authentic now we're going to touch on that in a minute but there's also another thing that you shouldn't say when you're asked the weakness question and that's being generic and saying something lofty things like i care too much and when people say that it always kind of cracks me up because i think to myself like really do you really care too much so realistically don't say things like that because we know you're just making it up off the top of your head so in order to answer this question effectively let's look at a three-part formula now the first part of this formula is again being authentic so take a deep look at yourself and truly what some of your weaknesses are and then you're going to use that and you're going to turn it into a learning opportunity first let's start with the weakness so we want to state our weakness and then we want to put it into context now say you're somebody that's very creative and you're a high level problem solver but maybe you're somebody that doesn't do great with details you could say something to the effect of in my career i have been somebody that has been a very creative problem solver i like to look at the big picture and really come up with the best possible solutions but one of the weak weaknesses that i've had is not being detail-oriented enough to get down into the weeds and really get through all those details i like to think big and i like to solve big problems and getting involved in some of the minutia tends to slow me down so once we stated our weakness and then we put it into context the next step is to address it so i've learned in my career that i really need to put extra attention into that in order to truly be effective so i've worked hard on developing systems that will help keep me organized when dealing with all the little details and then you can go on to talk about some of the systems that you've created maybe it's excel spreadsheets maybe it's some checklist that you've worked with and come up with solutions that you can share with the interviewing team so once you've given that portion of the answer you're then going to wrap it all up with the third step and that is to apply what you've learned so i've realized that it's always going to be a weakness for me because it's not something that comes natural but by implementing a few small tricks i'm able to overcome my weakness and that's essentially what they're looking for in the question is can you diagnose something that's wrong and address it that's why answering the question with i don't have any weaknesses doesn't give us any insight into you as the problem solver so next time you're in an interview setting and you're asked the question what's your greatest weakness don't say that you care too much and make sure that you have a great answer so hopefully this helps if you follow this formula you should
