hey scrappers tom from icecraft we had a really awesome question and they want to talk about materials that we see commonly at scrap yard so here we are at rockaway recycling and you know as a scrapyard owner and someone that buys actively from customers we really like showing people what things are so in no random order we're going to walk through and we're going to talk about some of the top materials that we buy at our yard not just like a top 10 list but just top materials things that will give you different ideas sorting and separation so come follow me our scrap yard is very clean very organized we have things like this electronic ballast on it so electronic ballasts are going to come out of newer lights these are going to be lights that are led lights there's less copper inside these electronic ballasts will be on here you want to be able to make sure that they're separated from your regular ballasts and if you go somewhere over here this would be a traditional ballast from a big led light big pieces of copper we have all led lighting here at rockaway recycling or otherwise i would pan up but if you think about a stadium an old stadium or an old gymnasium those old dome lights would have a transformer or a ballast like this inside helping to create the current from the electricity to power the light bulb and keep the lights on nowadays things are done much differently these led ballasts still have value always refer to the ice craft app national pricing list to get an idea or talk to your local scrap yard some people will ask about these and i'm sure you're going to comment and they'll say hey is this something that we can clean this is something that you can clean and you can save with a grinding wheel you can cut the copper on one side you can cut the copper on the other side bend these pieces back and pull them out with channel grips or vice grips you'll be able to get some copper out of this then you'll have a clean piece of number one steel actually these are about 30 pieces that are glued together but still once the steel is left over you will have a number one steel here we have acrs both clean and dirty ac ours these of course come from from air conditioning units or other type of refrigeration units quick thing to look at this has a steel end on it cut the steel end off with the sawzall some people will then take these little pieces of copper off the ends we don't do that at rockaway recycling we sell them as a dirty end afterwards but we very much advise customers to take a couple of minutes get that sawzall and cut those ends off when you cut the ends off you get a cleaner product you generally end up upgrading your material by 15 to 20 cents at a minimum looks like we have a big barrel of electric motors now these electric motors could come out of anything look some kind of a mix master right so if you're looking to make some cake and your mat your mixing machine doesn't work anymore there is an electric motor in here that's what we'll be spinning this now this looks like it's a dirty pallet of electric motors what does that mean and why is it important to you looks like there's little attachments all over it plastic motors attached to aluminum these probably should be separated out but then you have a fan blade and when you have a fan blade attached to a motor you have excess steel when you go to sell it to the scrapyard they see lower value because it's not worth as much money so you're going to want to clean something like this to really maximize your mount now just scrolling quickly leaning over over here we see a ceiling fan again ceiling fans you think about it hanging up there your lights hanging out your paddles hanging off you have a motor inside here but you have this case all around the at the outside and this excess material which looks like brass but is actually steel this brings down the value because there's more steel opposed to more copper and that's a very good example of something that you could take apart further to make more money but sometimes the weight of the steel will offset it and it's not worth your time don't forget not everything is worth taking apart now here it looks like we have some machined aluminum probably a 6063 grade here you see prepared aluminum clips prepare aluminum clips means that it's a mix grading of aluminum but what you see here is no paint no stickers no solder no plastic no steel screws this is a clean prepared aluminum box now from here our staff will actually take out our xrf analyzer we'll be able to see if this is 60 63 60 61 or another grade to sort and separate it to make more money now looking over here quickly this is a box that's getting ready to be processed these are hard drives that come in of course you want to be able to sell these to the scrap yard to make more money quick tip by taking this board off you will make more money but with these little weird hexagon screws on here these star screws you need to have specialty bits and when you have eight screws per board it does not always pay off sometimes you do not make extra money unless you have a lot of them looks like we're back into the air conditioner family these are sealed units these sealed units are filled with oil we like to keep these inside of barrels in case excess oil drips out now if you are not a certified hvac professional and you do not know how to get the oil out of these things please don't pour it on the ground that is the worst thing you can do you can do some research online figure out how to pump it out with some aftermarket pumps this way you're not ruining the earth pouring oil into the ground or into the drain you can recycle these things through your townships you or your municipalities safely just by asking them what to do but these compressors we always suggest doing things like cutting the copper as you saw here this is a piece that a customer didn't cut and this is a good example on how you can make more money just by cutting off a piece of copper with a pair of snips relatively quickly now to my left you're going to see more electric motors you're going to see these are clean because they don't have large pieces of steel while these are fan blades they're aluminum fan blades and that's why they are allowed to stay inside this bin we have a clean number one tubing box now don't forget number one tubing doesn't mean that it has to be brand new then it cut off from an install it also could be something that was used before has some slight corrosion on it green is not bad green helps you make green but if you end up having paint or anything on here that's what will downgrade your number one tubing so always sort see a big pile of mixed brass things that i want to look out for that you'll be able to scrap this was probably a planting pop often times we see these at garage shells you might be able to grab these for a couple of bucks they might be three or four pounds heavy and you might be able to make some nice money at garage sales with things like this here we have a faucet now not all of this faucet is brass many of these nowadays actually are plastic or die cast you can hear listen that is not metal that is plastic we will end up cutting this apart to be able to take that plastic off so if you have a lot of these sink faucets right you want to make sure that you file them see if the handle is brass or see if this is dichrome plastic zinc those are lower grades and those lower grades at your scrap yard need to be separated because as more of this material comes into the market scrap yards are going to figure these things out and pay you differently so be a little more proactive in your sorting this way you can make more money and more importantly have no problems at the yard now scrolling over here we have our number two copper bin this is a regular number two copper bin you can see solder joints old corrosion and paint you can see solder here where it was over here you have a piece with white paint on it another thing that would be number two tubing a lot of people will take the longer coils off from the heaters in your house where there's a copper pipe and all the aluminum fins going around generally when you cut and pull those fins off as we have shown in other videos the copper under underneath it is going to be clean but you might want to just put different bins aside and ask your scrap yard before you just assume and if you mix different coppers together you might actually have your material downgraded now over here we have another boxes number one tubing but this might be one that has all the joints that need to be cut off or processed down because some of the pieces are too long we have different bins here for many things and it just helps on a day-to-day sorting level here we have 35 icw insulated copper wire icw number two and what that means is inside it's not going to be bare bright but it's going to be a tin coating on there here you'll see things like extension cords power cords and this is where you can start to make money because you can start to separate things out and really that's what we do at rockaway recycling when we get mixed loads in here sometimes we'll have things like cat5 mixed in here or some type of cat6 but some of these cords these older ones actually don't go as a computer wire even though they're off of computers these can get upgraded to a 50 icw which means that 50 percent of the weight is copper and 50 percent of the weight is plastic so that's a much higher grade and when you look in this bin this is our insulated wire this is going to be anywhere from 47 to 55 recovery material and you want to make sure that you're not having things mixed together because that's where you'll lose money when grades are mixed together you will get paid for the lower grade generally not different mixes so when you have different types of wire you want to sort and separate these things another example than you have comes out of aluminum bx or even out of romex this is about 75 to 80 copper and by sorting and separating this you'll make more money now something very important to keep in mind these green lines are generally the electric grounds but as copper becomes more expensive manufacturers are starting to take this copper ground and replace it with an aluminum ground when you go to sell that to your scrap yard sort them out peel the aluminum away otherwise you will be downgraded and you will make less money on your strap now a couple of examples here 88 icw number one that means 88 of the material here is going to be copper with about 12 percent being plastic so just by looking at some of these different pieces inside you'll be able to see the different levels of copper these are things that many people will end up stripping but at a scrap yard we generally don't have time for the smaller grades so we end up just stripping things that are the size of our pinky or bigger here we have romex different colors of romex you could have white orange black yellow gray white all these different colors that are here generally inside of the romex you're going to have three different strands many of you will end up stripping this but it's important to look at it and know here you have two pieces of thhn and one copper ground now by stripping this you will immediately get a piece of bear bright two pieces of thhn generally romex is between 65 and 70 percent copper but by stripping down this outside jacket you immediately get one piece of bear bright two pieces of thn whether or not you break it down further is up to you but these are just different things to keep in mind this is a general aluminum sheet mix what's inside here you're going to have door frames from showers that have plastic left on it you're going to have pots and pans you're going to have old bike frames old ladders things that have debris tape plastic stuff like that is going to be in here generally a scrap yard will give you about two to three percent non aluminum inside of your aluminum sheet containers that could be things like plastic steel so one to two three percent now here's a really good example of a couple of materials that many people ask about here we have insulated aluminum wire and many people will strip this and we really advise stripping this by taking something like this and selling it as is you're going to make about one-third the amount of money that you would opposed to stripping it and making it clean sure you always want it to be bear bright and so do we but by stripping it with higher pricing on aluminum stripped by two to three times that of its insulated brethren you're gonna really be able to upgrade your material and make more money with your scrap last but not least we have our christmas lights many people have arguments and debates on whether or not you should remove the bulbs our opinion don't remove the bulbs unless they're heavy glass glass causes breakage cuts and problems but if you just have your regular plastic bulbs we do not let me repeat we do not recommend taking these bulbs out as you're generally going to have a lower grade of christmas wire of insulated copper wire with about a 15 to 30 percent copper recovery all depending on the different types of materials now this is a basic walk through at my scrap yard in new jersey we welcome you to come and visit us and sell us your scrap this way you can learn more about the process more about the procedures and especially how to make more money scrappers this is from tom from iscrap and until next time i'll scrap you later [Music] you
