well what we have been told for years is that floral sinks and mono floats with no doubt that floral sinks I'll show you just how quickly here in a minute but when I started doing some digging around we find that the density of monofilament line is greater than the density of water now I'm going to get a little sciencey here for a second so bear with me the density of fresh water is approximately one gram per cubic centimeter well monofilament comes in at 1 in 15 hundredths grams per cubic centimeter and fluorocarbon is right around 1 in 75 hundredths grams per cubic centimeter so mono based on the actual density of the line is going to sink it's not going to float well I wanted to do some testing of this and I wanted to find out what techniques what things do we do as Bass Anglers where this is definitely going to make a difference in other areas where we thought it made a difference and it really doesn't well I use 12 pound monofilament and 12 pound fluorocarbon and I spooled it off dry and then also tested it wet like we would when we are fishing and just from the visual test of sitting here in the side of the boat you can see that the monofilament definitely starts to sink and when we look at it under the water it is clearly dropping down through the water column and this is just loose line it doesn't have anything tied to it and I'd probably refer to this as the monofilament sinks very slowly now when we switch over to the fluorocarbon from above the water it doesn't take long at all and it really starts dropping and when we watch it from underneath it just falls through the water column very quickly well one of the things that we have been told in the past is that monofilament and or fluorocarbon can really make a difference in your top water fishing so I tested this out as far as the lure sitting still just sitting in the water on a calm day with both a traditional sized walking bait this one is a sexy dog and then also a popper and when I've got the monofilament on these both on the Walking bait and the popper it sits in the water like we would expect it to it's got that nose up just a little bit gonna give us as Anglers the best opportunity to work the lure efficiently now when I cut that off and I tie both of these lures on with fluorocarbon the interesting thing is with the walking bait you can't really notice a difference in how The Lure is sitting you can definitely see the line dropping down through the water column opposed to the monofilament where the lines more just kind of neutrally suspended there with the fluorocarbon on the Walking lure it's just hanging straight down but a walking lure has a lot more buoyancy to it there's a lot of air inside of this bait now when we switch over to the popper this is where it becomes comes definitely noticeable you can see here that the popper on the fluorocarbon is sitting nose down deeper into the water column than with the monofilament and where you can really see it is if you look at the eye of the lure with the monofilament we can see most of the eye but when we put on the fluorocarbon not only can we see the entire eye of the popper we can actually see some of the lure above the eye as well well what about as far as our leaders go well I did a video last fall about Carolina leader material and the results of that video were between the fluorocarbon and monofilament leader there was no noticeable difference whatsoever based on the line material what was much more important as far as keeping that lure suspended off the bottom a little bit was the actual makeup of the lure whether it was plastisol or elastic attack and then the leader length had a much bigger impact than the actual leader material if you want that lure up off the bottom longer a longer leader made a noticeable difference when it comes to using you know braid to a leader on your spinning gear or bait cast gear our leaders aren't that long to where the the buoyancy of the line or the lack thereof is going to make that big a difference now if you're using a Mainline fluorocarbon like with those top Waters or crankbaits yeah that is going to start to make a difference because that floral really drops through the water column quickly and then of course there's a whole nother video that we could do about visibility of the line light refraction stretch all that type of stuff but that's a topic for another video I just really wanted to jump into this idea that monofilament is going to stay up on top of the water column it's just not the case and hey if you'd like to watch a video that talks about where we should start fishing go ahead and check this one out right here and make sure that you go out and encourage someone today you never know how you might just change their life for the bass fishing life I'm your host Steve Rogers
