WEEK IN MY LIFE as a first year teacher!// ep. 2

[Music] good morning everyone if you are new here my name is emily i am a first year fourth grade teacher and today's video is going to be a week in my life so first of all sorry if you can hear my ac um they turn it off over the weekends so it is warm in here so i'm going to try and keep that running so that by the time my students get in in about 15 minutes it can warm up so today and tomorrow fourth grade is testing so i don't have any plans for today um i just have to administer the test and kind of supervise my kids and stuff so not much going on today and tomorrow um i did get my kids some treats so i need to make some sort of like tag for that um that i'm gonna give them at the end of the day after testing to treat them because i know it's a long day when you're testing all day especially for these kids like not being able to like get their energy out hopefully we can have recess um but it's looking like it might rain today uh during their recess which would really stink for them and for me because indoor recess while testing all day is a lot but that's all right so also it is tuesday because yesterday was labor day so um yeah that's that's the haps you know what i mean what else what else i will show you my outfit i guess while we're at it i really like my outfit today it's very fall very very fall this is it super cute um i'm just wearing a like tank top this is from i think it's from [Music] tj maxx and then this like shacket thing is from sheehan it was in my sheehan haul which was in my last video my weekend in my life so if you'd missed that haul definitely go check that out and then just black jeans high-waisted of course and then these shoes are just leopard little slides that kind of match my earrings so that's the outfit for the day um i don't have my kids morning work but that's okay because part of our school's new thing this year is making sure each student has one trusted adult at school and so every week they have to do a check-in and they basically have to like they go through all the pictures there's a bunch of pictures of like all the staff here and so they can click on the pictures if they you know if they find that adult to be a trusted adult for them so that's what they're going to do this morning for morning work yeah that's kind of all that's going on i came in like a little bit later than i usually do like 20 minutes later than i usually do um which is fine because i didn't really have anything to get ready um i've never administered this test before and it's new to our school apparently so nobody has so i'm just hoping we don't have any difficulty doing that and we also decided as a fourth grade team to start sending the kids um chromebooks home and i had one student not bring theirs back on friday but everybody else did so and i sent out a message last night i emailed all the parents and i was like please make sure your student brings their chromebook because that's what they test on so i'm hoping that everybody brings their chromebook i'm just like really hoping because i don't know what i would do if they didn't so anyway i'm gonna go get the room ready turn on my lights on turn the overheads off and we will get started on the day i will update you during plan which is in like an hour and a half so not too far away and yeah hi everyone it's lunch time um i have to be quick because i'm going to eat lunch with my team because we need to talk about a few things um but the day is going well they just finished um the ela portion of this big old test that they have to take and they're doing so well by sweet kiddos anyway the day is going well um i've just been grading pretty much because we're sending progress reports out on friday so i'm trying to get all that stuff done so yeah it's actually going by pretty fast like it's already at lunch and then we only have a few more hours left so i will update you guys at the end of the day oh we did it it's the end of the day now my kids did so well testing i felt so bad because they just were testing all day but they did so well so i gave them cosmic brownies as a treat because i was like you did so good here's a treat and they have to test tomorrow it's like a different test um but it's gonna be all day again and so i told them i would get them another treat tomorrow so they're excited about that they were like all right well we'll take the test if that means we get another treat so yeah it was a good day i got a little bit of planning done um because we're testing this week it's just going to be kind of crazy um but if you've been you know keeping up with my vlogs and stuff we've just been working on personal narrative so um on thursday which is going to be our first day of content for writing because of testing um we're going to continue our i think everybody's done with their rough draft and so now we are peer editing and peer revising so we're going to be doing that thursday and friday pretty much and if they finish that i have a sheet that they're going to be doing if i can find it here it is [Applause] this is what it looks like it's an about the author sheet so they're going to draw a little picture of themselves write their name their age and then write a little description about the author which is them so um they're gonna do that and then oh i just realized those are small but i'm gonna be stapling everything together i'm gonna probably reprint those and make them big size yeah but i have time to do that no worries um tomorrow their morning work is going to be um three passages three three passages one on producers one on consumers and one on decomposers um and then there's like questions to go along with the passage so that's tomorrow's morning work we talked about it today so yeah i have about [Music] 20 minutes until i can leave um i don't know if i'm gonna vlog tonight i am going to the new house we're going to clean get dinner hang out things like that because it just needs to be done really um so yeah that's about it okay so i'm going to head out of here soon and i'll talk to you guys tomorrow [Music] do [Music] good morning everyone happy wednesday it's crazy that it's already wednesday four day weeks go back fast so um today is another day of testing super chill day um just gonna get some planning done some grading done um i did get them treats yesterday after testing i gave them cosmic brownies and they were like oh my gosh and then i told them that we had to test again all day today and they were like but i was like it's okay i'll get you more treats and they were like okay so they'll do anything for treats so i got them so tootsie pops i really hope there's enough in here um it doesn't say but i think it'll be fine so oh 12. i still have some um starbursts left over so if i run out of tootsie pops i starburst so yeah that's the plan for today um their morning work is just um there's a passage on producers with some questions and then a passage on consumers with some questions we started talking about that yesterday in the morning before testing and so um they're going to do that for morning work and then they can keep that in their science notebooks so that's that um [Music] yeah i'm pretty tired i am this is my iced coffee this is my hot coffee uh that describes my level of tiredness for the day i i don't know if you guys even care about this but i was at the new house last night we're still not living there um we still have a bunch of work to do so last night we went over there and we were cleaning and stuff until late and i get didn't get home till late and then it was like thunderstorming like super bad so that kept me up and so i'm just a little bit sleepy today but that's all right so yeah i'm going to be planning our next unit which is fictional narrative um and i think i want to do like a couple weeks on fairy tales um and have them write like a fairy tale like a completely made-up fun story um and then do one on like a realistic fiction narrative so like a story that's made up but could actually happen so i think as our read-aloud i might do the tale of desperate i'm still trying to figure that out because i'm not a reading teacher i'm just writing so i'm like should i do like a read-aloud because i'm technically not reading but i think like reading and writing really do go together and i think that it's helpful for students to have some sort of like mentor text um for their writing so i think i might do like maybe read like 10 pages of this um every day before we start um and then i'm still trying to figure out like what i want to do like what system one another my voice lights keep falling and i don't know how to keep them on my board uh so that's squirrel anyway so i'm trying to figure out how i want to like um go about doing our doing that for this personal narrative we like pre-wrote together we planned all together and then we drafted it all together we're revising all together editing all together i don't know what i want to do for um the fictional narrative i have a unit from not so wimpy teacher on [Music] narrative writing fictional narrative writing so i might use that i don't know i'm just gonna plan that out today that was just a long-winded thing to say i'm gonna plan my that today i guess i could show you my outfit for the day i love coming in and just turning all the like the overhead lights off and just keeping my other lights on it's very nice i also need to change my date okay so my shirt is actually from walmart it just says motivator innovator believer teacher and then my earrings are also from walmart love a good walmart bargain and then these pants are like they look like pajama pants and they feel like pajama pants but they're not i got these from plato's closet they're just like flowy green pants so i cannot link them i'm so sorry and then my shoes i'm just wearing my tivas because hashtag comfort um [Music] yeah that's pretty much it i don't think there's really any other updates for this morning i'll be able to talk to you during plan today yesterday we had a meeting during planning so i could talk to you but but today i'll be able to catch you up during planning so i will see you then hello everybody it's my plan time so i'm like oh this hurts my ears so about um it is planned time we did science my shoulder we did science uh my kids are at music um i only have like 15 more minutes uh because we were working on a bulletin board out in the hallway so that took up a bit of time i'm gonna pull my curtain down okay so my shoulder hurts so bad it's like cramping i haven't even finished my coffee from this morning my first one yeah but the day's going well we have like uh i think one two three four kids absent today um and i think that a large part of that is because of testing um because testing today but who knows we start when the kids get back from music and then i'm just going to sit here and plan the whole time i brought my airpods so that i could just like put one in and listen to a podcast or something just while we sit here i'm just tired man like oh tired anyway i will talk to you guys probably at lunch no i'm eating lunch with students today i'll talk to you at the end of the day [Music] good morning happy thursday i am running super behind today so i just wanted to pop in this morning and say hello i have to go make copies we're sending out progress reports tomorrow so i'm like having to do all this stuff today is picture day so looking cute today or whatever it's thursday almost made it to friday today is going to be an interesting day i will talk to you guys later about what we're doing today but i just wanna pop in this morning and say hello but i gotta go run around and i'll talk to you guys at plan hi everyone so my kids are actually at library right now um i forgot they had this today today has just been like crazy we were supposed to have pictures at 745 and then they called us at 10 o'clock to take them because they were so early but then i didn't plan for that and so then i was we've had like an hour long recess because they didn't get recess yesterday because of testing so yeah today's just been crazy like and i we're supposed to send home progress progress reports tomorrow and i was behind on that so i was trying to get that done um and then i've been planning for tomorrow because we realized like oh shoot 911 is saturday and so we kind of decided it would make the most sense for me to like teach that because i am writing and they could do like a little writing assignment so i'm trying to work on that um i'll show you that tomorrow i'm sure yeah so my plans today have just been ketchup and pickles that's all my kids have been doing is catching up on stuff and pretty much free writing um that's just the kind of day that we've been having and it's fine i'm just so tired like that's been the theme this week i have not slept good all week if you are have been watching me for a long time you know that like i'm a terrible sleeper um and it was okay for a while and now it's just been bad again so yeah but i have to go get my kids in a second and then pretty much we just pack up and go home so that's pretty much it i am excited to go home matt has a game tonight he coaches football if you are new here my fiance coaches middle school football and teaches pe in middle school so we're both teachers but yeah i got a comment that was like i don't like when your videos when you talk too much i was like what else do you want me to do you don't like when i talk too much then don't watch my videos because that's pretty much all i can do is talk to you i can't show you anything really i'm hungry also my kids just keep like i i haven't seen my other classes until today because of testing and so my kids that i haven't seen they came in they're like miss wigman your hair because i dyed it and cut it all off if you didn't see my weekend video you missed out um so yeah they were like respect when your hair looks so different they're cute they're sweet anyway i'm gonna go get them from library and then we're going to pretty much just pack up and go home so no science today no science today anyway i'll talk to you guys after school okay everybody oh it's the end of the day they're gone i'm so happy not happy that they're gone but like you know happy to be done with thursday and i realized i never showed you do my outfit so let me see if i can like do this here um maybe maybe not i'll just show you my shirt first this is from sheen it is just a little green ruffle sleeve with tears this was also in my sheen haul in my weekend video which if you didn't watch go watch it and then i'm just wearing black flared pants and these shoes are from plato's closet so let me see if i can get like the full effect it's so hard to see can you see can you can you see and then my earrings are from lulu's actually they're really cute i love them they do ring in my ear all day but they're cute so picture day went well my kids were like miss wickman did you like your picture i was like i don't know they're so cute i'm going to um i just printed out some things for tomorrow uh we're doing a little hero assignment that i made i just made this on powerpoint i will talk to you guys more about that tomorrow um but yeah that's the plan i got a very sweet note today from one of my little behavior kids we're making lots of progress with him which always feels good when you make progress with a student like behavior-wise and like you start to respect each other more and like you have that mutual like trust so that feels good but yeah i'm going to probably just sit here for a second breathe because i need to do that and then head home and tomorrow's gonna be a really fun day i have a lot of fun things planned so tomorrow morning i'm going to share with you guys what all we're doing for writing and science science is going to be very fun tomorrow so yeah i'll see you guys tomorrow for friday [Music] [Music] can i do a venti cold brew with oat milk today um can i get two pumps of sleepy this morning i like rushed out of the house so that i'd have time to go to starbucks so my body's like still waking up but we got it also my go-to drink like last year was always a venti cold brew with cinnamon dolce syrup and oat milk and so i was like oh i haven't gotten that in a while let me get that and then they said oh i'm sorry we don't carry cinnamon dolce anymore that was sad but i got a bentley cold brew with oat milk and brown sugar syrup very good my outfit these earrings are from amazon per usual and then i am just wearing this shirt it says awesomely different um today is september 10th but tomorrow is september 11th so we're kind of not celebrating but um commemorating that today so got my red white and blue and then i'm just wearing jeans and my white sneakers so um let me quickly chat to you about what we're doing today so one second okay so we kind of decided that i would be the one out of the three of us to do something for 9 11 like do a lesson so they could have like a writing assignment and we could like display it in the hallway so um i'm gonna find a video um to go along not to go along with my book but just to kind of like also show um so i still have to find that i might try and find like a brain pop i don't know if brain pop has one on 9 11 but um this book is what we're going to read it's called 14 cows for america um one of you guys actually sent this to me off of my amazon wishlist so shout out to whoever sentenced to me i can't remember off top of my head but it's basically about this tribe in africa who one of their own was in new york when 9 11 happened and he comes back and he's like telling them the story of what happened and the tribe kind of has this ceremony for the american embassy in their country and they you know they're dancing and they're you know talks about how they're mournful and they're you know all that good stuff and it's just a really really good book that kind of shows the not just how it affected us here because of course it did but it also affected people around the world and um there's a quote in here that i'm going to kind of focus on let me find it yes this one and the illustrations are just like beautiful like look at that um but anyway on this page it says because there's no nation so powerful it cannot be wounded nor are people so small they cannot offer mighty comfort so i thought that was a really awesome quote from this book so we're going to kind of talk about like um how so the gist of why it's 14 cows for america is this tribe's most precious belonging our cows like that is their most like precious thing and um when they meet the member of the american embassy and they do their ceremony they offer him 14 cows um from their tribe and so kind of just saying that they sacrifice like their most precious like treasure and then we're going to talk about sacrifice and um how the first responders on that day sacrificed their lives um and they were heroes and all that stuff and then um so kind of segwaying we're going to talk about like what is a hero and how like heroes don't all aren't always you know sacrificing their lives but they're sacrificing things and heroes can look different for everyone so i made this on powerpoint and it says my hero and i said the tribe in 14 counts for america acted as heroes for the american in the story the first responders during 9 11 were heroes and kept people safe who is your hero and why so they're going to write something about their hero and then i'm going to have them like color it red white and blue and then each homeroom teacher because i can't hang 72 writings in on my bulletin board outside so i'm going to give the other teachers their homeroom classes writing and we're all going to hang them hang them up in the hallway so yeah that is today i think it's going to be a good day i'm excited about this and then i have this one i just put it in spanish for my student who only speaks danish so but yeah so that's the plan for today um i got here really early it's only 6 45 right now and i don't really have much to do but i'm going to look for a video that i can show them because the book like talks about 9 11 but it doesn't like explain it like what happened um and i know these kids are in fourth grade they've heard you know the spiel every year what happened i'm sure they all know but it's good to just like reflect and remember so i'm going to find a video and then i'll share with you a video i find just in case i mean you're going to be seeing this after the fact but you can always use it on monday or something i don't know i will talk to you guys in just a second hello everyone it is currently my plan time um we have gone through over half of our first class um and so i read the book the 14 counts for america and then we watched the brain pop i forgot to say this morning but i did find a brain pop if you just search 9 11 pops up and it's a really really great video it explains it in kid-friendly terms and kind of like breaks it down and it's really really helpful and the kids really liked it and they like it helps them understand better for sure the book i personally love the book but my kids are still like they're still fresh out of third grade you know like they're still pretty young so most of them it kind of just like went over their heads some of them really enjoyed it but most of them were kind of just like and this is like my high group that i have first so i know that if they're kind of like then i know that my other groups are not going to understand and not going to enjoy it so there's another book that i really like that i have done before in years past called fireboat i'm sure that you guys have probably heard of it so i think i'm going to play that for my other classes um just because it's more kid-friendly and it's easier to understand so i'll do fire boat and then we'll talk about it and then we'll watch the brain pop and then they'll do their hero assignment um they haven't finished yet they are at specials right now so they'll finish when they come back and i'm really excited to read them i've one student finished and they read about their cousin who serves in the army and how he's his hero and i was like oh so i know these will be really awesome so today's like a great day but it's also a little bit somber like i have this somber feeling um my grandmother died when i was really young and today's her birthday and so i woke up just like a little bit somber um you know wishing she was here and then teaching about september 11th is always kind of somber and we just got some pretty sad news about a student's family member so it's like a weird day it's friday so i'm like really excited for the weekend but then it's also like these things are all kind of piling up today and that's okay i shared that with my students you know that today might feel a little bit sad and a little bit somber but that's okay um so yeah that's kind of my rant um i do have to put together my students progress reports they're all filled out i just have to staple their testing scores because we got this back so i'm going to do that while i sit here um probably eat a snack we're gonna door dash chick-fil-a for lunch which i'm very excited about but yeah i hope that you guys are having a great friday i don't know when you're gonna be watching this i think you're watching this on sunday i hope you had a great friday um but yeah i'm just like still tired and weird day but a good day hello everyone it's the end of the day oh i'm so tired i'm like literally exhausted today was one of those days this week was one of those weeks that were just like so hard and yeah i'm just like honestly feeling like i want to cry they're just like i understand that they get excited at the end of the day and especially when it's friday but they're blatantly not following my directions like that's when i get really frustrated um anyway so it was a little bit of a rocky afternoon but it's fine um their hero writings turned out really cute uh so i'm gonna hang those in the hallway i think maybe before i go but i'm also just like i just want to go home so we'll see um yeah um i think of anything else i did switch to the other book for the last two classes and it was really good it's called fireboat if i didn't already say that one of my students just leaked your mind right now um it's called fireboat and it was really good and the kids understood that one a lot more than the other one that i originally planned um and so then for science today we were supposed to do an experiment with like decomposers so we were supposed to like put bread in different areas of the classroom and see how mold develops but i forgot bread this morning of course so we just did three go noodles and then i should have known better but that like got them really riled up and so i said let's see if we can be quiet for two minutes and so they did two minutes and then i just kept going and going and going and then it ended up being ten and then it was time to go home so that was the end of our day i felt kind of bad but they love any kind of competition so like they played the quiet game and so anyway but yeah i sent progress reports home which is good got those done with their test scores and yeah that's my friday i'm sorry to come on here and just like complain i hate when i do that but i it was a great day it was i loved talking with them having conversations about 9 11. they asked a lot of interesting questions and um really listened to the information that um was in the videos and stuff and that we talked about so that was good it was a good day it's a good week i'm just glad it's over so i think
