hey guys henry here and today we're going to be going through and explaining the plot of makato shinkai's latest anime film weathering with you it's a movie that's typically in shinkai's wheelhouse you've got two prominent main characters and of course there's a romance between them and it's all within the context of some supernatural occurrences and in this case it has to do with the weather so in this video i'll be going in depth and breaking down the story and explaining the ending of this film and also what i thought was the meaning behind the film so just letting you know this video is going to be one big old spoiler so you have been want anyway let's just jump straight into it and get into explaining weathering with you the film begins with a young girl in a hospital room holding the hand of a woman a loved one that is sick and seemingly hospital bound we're not giving much detail and there's nothing said between the two the girl looks out the window at the buildings of tokyo being drenched by a heavy downpour and notices a small ray of light penetrating through the clouds onto a single rooftop the girl is drawn to the light and she leaves the hospital and sprints towards the ray climbing the stairs to the rooftop where she finds a single red tory gate she approaches the gate and prays and is suddenly teleported somewhere high in the sky and she flies or she falls through the air while these little fish droplets swim throughout the air around her we're then introduced to the male protagonists of the film hodaka who is standing on a large ship approaching tokyo and as the boat gets nearer to the destination the boat is suddenly shaken by a torrential downpour of rain the boats weighs violently and hidaka loses his balance nearly sliding off the ship but in the nick of time he's grabbed by a man and saved hidaka then treats the man to a meal and a beer to repay the favor the man clearly exploiting this young kid for his money making the kid buy him a full meal on a boat which we know is probably hella expensive as well as a beer and this just makes him feel very dodgy right off the bat the man notices that is fairly young and may be a little bit out of his depth in tokyo alone although hidaka does claim that he's staying with family the man introduces himself to hodaka as suga and gives him a business card and tells him to get in touch if he ever needs help when i saw this alarm bells were just going off in my head i was thinking man this guy for sure is just a creep and he's gonna end up scamming hodaka or something like that just given the behavior we've seen so far in the film so hidaka goes off into the big world of tokyo and he struggles to find a job and he has to slum it pretty hard he's showering from time to time in these manga cafes shelling out coins every time just to get clean and he's eating instant food and in this reality tokyo is plagued by a constant rain and cloudy skies which if they keep up it threatens to drown the city one night he tries to avoid the rain and balls up next to a trash can in an alleyway next to a nightclub however he's shooed away by an employee and knocks over a trash can where he finds a discarded gun and oddly he decides to keep the gun for himself and i think he just wants to keep it for protection honestly i'm not a huge fan of this gun plot device but we'll get into that later and one day he falls asleep in mcdonald's and a staff member gives him a burger out of pity and the staff member is a girl that looks sort of familiar maybe she's the girl from the beginning oh yeah of course is the girl from the beginning hodaka now without any real options decides to call sugar and heads to his home to chat about a potential job hidaka arrives and he finds a woman sleeping on the couch she wakes up and introduces herself as suga's assistant natsumi suga arrives and explains what he does for a living he runs a magazine that reports on the supernatural and other wacky things that would engage readers he offers hadaka a job working for him in return for accommodation a mobile phone and a little bit of money okay so by now we work out that sugar isn't really that much of a creep but in a way he's still scamming hidaka as he's paying him essentially just peanuts hidaka then works alongside natsumi and sugar researching investigating writing and reporting on the supernatural and they quickly develop a close bond together and although hodaka is working hard for hardly any money he begins to find some happiness and purpose within the big city of tokyo sugar also gives hodaka a specific task of investigating these people that are apparently known as weather maidens who supposedly have the power to control the weather and they might be able to stop the rain one day hidaka notices a girl being pestered by two dodgy looking guys pulling at her and trying to convince her to come and do an easy task for them while the job isn't specified these types of men often target young women around train stations in tokyo to work at the hostess clubs where they wear skimpy outfits and entertain older men serving them drinks keeping them company all to make a bit of extra cash realising that this was the same girl that helped him out by gifting him a free big mac early in the film hadaka grabs the girl's hand telling her to run the girl is initially hesitant but then ends up running a chase ensues and hidaka is caught and pinned to the ground by the two men where he is promptly beat up and in self-defense hidaka pulls out the gun and threatens the man the man not believing that hidaka has the ball to kill him or just assuming that the gun is fake eggs him on and urges him to just do it hadaka then fires the gun however the bullet doesn't hit anyone both men stand there in shock and the girl grabs hodaka and they flee the scene the two of them catch their breath in an abandoned building and the girl scolds hadaka for firing the gun and acting so carelessly telling him off for trying to play the hero as she doesn't need his help hodaka then throws the gun to the floor in frustration and honestly when he did this it scared the out of me i thought that it was gonna discharge and there was gonna be a jump scare or something i was just waiting for it i was so sure it was gonna happen but it didn't anyway the girl introduces herself as hina and tells him that she recognizes him from mcdonald's and she knows he's a runaway hina takes hodaka to the roof of the building which is the same rooftop as seen at the beginning of the film and as the rain falls hina reassures hidaka that everything will clear up then hina clasps her hands together and closes her eyes prompting rays of sun to begin to break through the clouds revealing herself to be a weather maiden the very person that hodaka had actually been searching for and obviously now it's confirmed that hina is the very same girl as at the beginning of the film confirming our hunch right the two quickly become friends and hidaka visits hina's apartment and meets her little brother nagi hina and nagi have lived together alone ever since the passing of their mother hidaka and hina the entrepreneurs they are quickly decide to monetize hindi's ability and swiftly build a website offering hina's weather clearing services for 3400 yen they receive orders immediately and quickly get to work they assist clearing up the weather for a local market young children's parties and even some large company events during a job for an old lady they learn about a mythical world above the clouds that used to exist a long time ago and interestingly the grandchild of this old lady is tucky one of the main characters from shinkai's previous film your name pretty cool easter egg hina also manages to clear up the weather on top of one of tokyo's largest skyscrapers during a festival and she and hodaka watch the fireworks together from the roof and they share a really sweet moment together hina thanking hidaka for helping her embrace who she really was and what she feels like she was meant to be the sunshine girl hina's 18th birthday approaches and hodaka decides to buy her ring as a gift and he actually buys the ring from mitsuha the girl from your name another cameo and another easter egg who is working at the jewelry store and helps him pick out the ring during a day out with suga and his daughter who has severe allergies and is only permitted to go out with her father on sunny days which is never in the current climate of tokyo as it's raining all the time i'm not really going to delve too much into sugar's subplot with his daughter i'm just touching on it now because i know that if i talk about it more it's going to just bog down the entire video hodaka introduces hina and nagi to suga and natsumi and the both of them are excited to finally meet the fabled sunshine girl after the outing hidaka walks hina home and he struggles internally to muster up the courage to give her the ring as he finally decides to do it a timely gust of wind blows past him and he braces himself closing his eyes when he opens his eyes he finds that hina is floating in the air she slowly comes back down and her dhaka notices that parts of her hand and arm have become translucent hina explaining that this seems to be the consequence of her using her powers the more she changes the weather the more of her that becomes translucent back at hina's apartment the two of them dry off when suddenly police show up looking for haruka they show hina a picture and she tells them that she's never seen him before the police then note that hina and nagi are too young to be living on their own and say that they'll return some other time pina understanding this to mean that social care workers will be coming to take them away hidaka meets up with sugar who tells him that the police have come to his office also looking for hidaka and that they were sent by his parents sugar hands hodaka a lot of cash as full payment for all his work and tells him to go home and that he's unable to help hadaka anymore hina and nagi decide to pack their things and run away for fear of being taken to foster care homes and hodaka refusing to go home decides to run away with them so the three of them roam the streets of tokyo in search of a hotel to spend the night but tokyo is hit by one of the worst typhoons and there's no places available for them to stay some police officers obviously concerned with three young kids just strolling around the city late at night approached them and recognized hodaka as the runaway boy hina inadvertently summons a lightning bolt which causes a parked truck to ignite and explode and that quickly distracts the officers hodakahina and nagi then quickly escape and end up finding a place costing 30 000 yen for one night hodaka spending all the money given to him by suga now having evaded the police and out of the rain they're able to relax they take a bath raid the mini fridge sing karaoke all until nagi falls asleep with hodaka praying that in this beautiful moment to let things stay as they are having now finally found a sense of love and family and now finally getting some alone time with hina hodaka gives her the ring and hina loves it bringing tears to her eyes she then asks hadaka if he wants the weather to go back to normal and he reluctantly says yes but then she proceeds to give her daughter some absolutely devastating news that as she uses her powers more and more as we know her body becomes more translucent but now it's spread across her entire body she tells herdaka that natsumi actually told her about the legend of the weather maiden and that a human sacrifice must be made to fix the weather and save tokyo from drowning and that she understands and she feels that she's the one that has to make that sacrifice and that time is drawing near she asks hidaka to be strong and asks him to look after nagi they embrace and hodaka begs her not to leave and they burst into tears together and fall asleep the next day hidaka wakes up and hino has disappeared the police break into the room and her daka and nagi are taken away as the police escort hidaka away he notices the ring that he gifted hina dropped from the sky onto the ground he picks it up and he realizes that she must have gone to the fabled world above the clouds and that she's still alive somehow by now the weather has completely cleared and the constant rain has now stopped confirming that heena's sacrifice has worked at the police station he tries to explain where he has disappeared to and he pleads for them to let him go and save hina however understandably they look at him like he's insane and don't believe him because he's talking about some world in the sky and some girl that sacrificed herself for the weather so yeah i'd think he's crazy too the police also tell hodaka that hina is actually 15 years old and she lied about being older than hodaka to try and act more mature this news completely devastates him as he was the oldest one in the group all along and he even more so should have been responsible in looking out for hina and nagi hidaka then makes a break for it and sprints out of the police station with officers chasing behind and natsumi suddenly pulls up on a motorbike telling hidaka that nagi had sent for her hodaka guides natsumi on her motorbike towards the building with the red tory gate on the roof as they evade the police chasing them they end up reaching a dead end where the roads are completely submerged by the flood of water and hodaka is forced to continue alone on foot and he runs along the train line to get to the building just as he arrives at the building he runs into sugar who tries to convince him to forget all about this and to go back with the police and go home sugar reasons with hadaka that he hasn't committed any serious crimes that he won't be in any serious trouble and suga obviously has alternative reasons for wanting hodaka to just walk away from everything and not pursue hino anymore we know that the good weather means that he can be reunited with his daughter and if haraka is to bring hina back he assumes that the weather will just go back to being terrible and his daughter's allergies will prevent him from seeing her again hodaka refuses to leave and suga is forced to grab him however hodaka bites him on the arm and breaks free he then finds the gun he discarded when he and hina were in the building previously and he picks it up and points it at suga refusing to go without finding hina the police rush in and hodaka just points the gun at all of them the gun's just whipping around he's aiming it everywhere but one of the policemen managed to knock the gun away from hoduka and pin him to the ground sugar seeing the desperation and determination in hadaka to get hina back has a change of heart and decides to help him and fights the police off nagi also arrives and helps suga delay the police hidaka then runs to the top of the building where he prays and jumps through the tory gate immediately finding himself falling through the sky just like at the beginning of the movie with hina and he's falling high up above the clouds and he sees a cloud platform with a grassy field on top where he sees hina is lying down unconscious he shouts her name and tries to fall towards her and hina slowly wakes up and sees him falling and runs to the edge of the cloud field and jumps towards him the two then fall together through the sky reaching out for each other finally able to grab each other and pull themselves together hidaka telling hina that he doesn't care about the rain he doesn't care if tokyo is plagued by the cloudy skies and the torrential rain forever and he tells her that all that matters is that he loves her and that she deserves to live we then cut back to reality and the police find the two of them unconscious under the tory gate hina is then taken to police custody and hodaka is sent back to his hometown where he's monitored and put on some kind of probation over the next three years tokyo remains under constant rain and becomes almost entirely submerged with some buildings completely engulfed and with much of the subway unusable people are forced to travel by ferry in those three years hidaka and hina did not contact each other and as soon as hidaka graduates school he moves to tokyo to attend university when he gets there he goes to find suga whose magazine business has expanded into an office in a tokyo high-rise and he's employed a couple more assistants hidaka then also goes to visit the old woman who hired their weathered clearing services years ago and told them about the world above the sky and she tells them that many centuries ago tokyo was indeed all ocean so in a way they're just returning to the way things were before suggesting the notion that perhaps the environment will always find a way and will inevitably return to how things used to be initially hesitant to go find hina after not having communicated with her over the last three years hodaka goes to find her as he walks towards hina's apartment he finds her along the road that they once walked together and he calls out to her she sees him and runs towards him in the two embrace telling each other that everything is going to be okay from now on and that's the end of the movie i've seen quite a bit of criticism about odaka's decision to essentially reverse heinous sacrifice and doom tokyo and japan to the flooding or just because he had a crush on a girl you could argue that hodaka could have honored hina's sacrifice rather than actually reverse it and doom the city and i guess that poses the question is trading one life worth preventing a natural disaster of this level and the answer the movie gives is that if it's for love it's not worth it and i feel like there's something absolutely reckless and irrational about hodaka's decision and willingness to just risk the fate of the world as it seemed just to save hina's life but it's actually really touching heartwarming and inspiring for him to make this decision although it's at the same time absolutely ridiculous i think this movie really speaks to human nature and how we have a desire to pursue what's directly in front of us we often think too much in the short term for what we want what we think we need and this is definitely relevant in the case of the environment well we definitely as a human race have tended not to look very far in the future often sort of kicking that can down the road but eventually we will pay the price for it and of course this leads me into my next point we have to talk about the subtext of the film and it's really just alluding to the irreversible damage that climate change has done to our planet and the potential disasters that could come up in the not so distant future what i did love about this film and what i just generally love about shinkai's work is the way he's able to build the world around him and it doesn't require any exposition at all it's the visuals it's the animation that carry this world building element we see the constant rain we see the decrepit buildings overrun with plant growth and the rusted exterior of a lot of the infrastructure and we see how the people are behaving in this world even though it's so clear that something's wrong no one is really doing anything about it and they sort of just adjust the way that they live their life and they just keep it moving i do however think that the world beyond the clouds the world in the sky could have been explored in a bit more depth it was such an interesting concept and piece of world building and it felt like such a shame to get to the end of the movie and not really have it explored and fleshed out a bit more and not having the experience of exploring it a bit more and we didn't really get to see the function of the world or why it exists or how it affects our reality all we know is that it's connected to hina somehow and she can control the weather through it but the reasons behind it aren't really made very clear is it like some sort of parallel universe to earth that is trying to maintain the environmental balance and because you know we've destroyed the earth so much it's trying to recalibrate uh it's just not explained we got very little snippets of insight we had some people noticing little water fishies floating in the air and we get these school boys getting completely drenched by something from up above but we don't really get a clear explanation as to what was happening then either i just would have really enjoyed a further exploration of this world while ultimately i did really enjoy this film it definitely doesn't reach the level of some of shinkai's other work like five centimeters per second honestly one of the greatest animes i've seen and also your name which had a really nice and tidy storyline and everything fit together really beautifully and i feel like the mythology behind that was explained in a bit more depth and had a bit more nuance to it and i just feel like this film had a lot of story choices that didn't really fit very comfortably in the arc of the film for example having hodaka and hina immediately jump to the idea of monetizing her powers and using her powers for financial gain it just left a bad taste in my mouth yes i get that they're poor and yes i get they need money but that being their first instinct just made me feel a bit icky and the gun as a story device as well i didn't really feel like it amounted to anything important after the first run-in where hadaka accidentally shoots the gun the gun is quickly forgotten until the very end where he uses it to threaten the police and suga and it was just a very unsatisfactory payoff to what seemed like a pretty important piece of the puzzle of the film i think it would have been better if maybe he did accidentally shoot someone he had to live with that sacrifice of someone else for him to save hina or something more of that nature where the device of the gun actually put more pressure on hardaka i feel like it was just there as a reason for the police to really get more involved and escalate it to a more serious level i didn't really feel like it fit very well within the the actual vibe of the film and as i mentioned before i feel like the exploration of the mythical cloud world just wasn't explored enough there were like bits and pieces sprinkled throughout but it didn't go into it with enough depth that i felt like i really understood what the world was but maybe that was the intention but at the same time it just felt really unsatisfactory and of course this movie ends with a happy ending you've got hina and hodaka finding their way back together after the three years even if the world has to really suffer for it because it's not their responsibility to save the world right they're just kids right and that's where the ending doesn't sit right for me it sort of gives the message that look it's not their responsibility if they're kids they shouldn't have to bear the burn of this responsibility but in reality it is the youth that will have to deal the consequences of climate change and it is the youth that has to take on that responsibility and not just rely on the excuse that we're young and the older people can just deal with it thank you guys for watching this video be sure to give me a big thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe to cloudy tv for more content from me what did you guys think of shinkai's weathering with you did you like the way it ended because for me i was a bit iffy on it i don't feel like it sat that well with me of course a happy ending for the two protagonists but not a happy ending for the world also let me know where you think weathering with you ranks among shinkai's other films i'm definitely interested to see whether people like this film better than your name or five centimetres per second because i definitely have those two above this so yeah let me know in the comment section down below as always thank you guys for watching and i'll catch you all next time you
