welcome to our second video covering how to save money when building your custom home if you haven't seen our first video click on the link in the top right or down in the description a huge area to save money would be and i'm sure you guessed it in the areas of finishes and selections these would include tile lighting countertops flooring hardware and appliances [Music] let's talk about appliances first people like what they like in this area so i only have a few pieces of advice here first look for deals for manufacturers we use a lot of thermador appliances in our home and they have a 1-2 free program where when you purchase specific thermador appliances they will give you a free dishwasher and a vent hood along with some other options our clients love this another way to save money is to watch what you spend on secondary appliances like wine and beverage coolers ice makers coffee makers etc you can quickly overspend here so shop around and find manufacturers that have pricing that's not at the top of the market for example you can spend 3 500 to 5 000 on a beverage cooler or a wine cooler or find a very decent one for 1200 so don't go crazy here be wise in your decisions in this area and save yourself some money [Music] here's a technique that we use to save money on tile go ahead and make your selections in this area and select the different tiles that you like to create the style and the look for your home using the tile that you selected and don't be surprised when the price comes in much higher than you were planting it does this almost every time now when you get the bid back identify each of the tiles that are costing you most of the money on the bed and try to find more affordable tiles to replace the expensive ones but they give you the same look for example we selected a towel for a master bathroom in one of our spec homes and the majority of the tile was a natural stone material it cost around eight dollars a square foot so we went back to the local tile store to find a tile that would give us the same look for less money and we did just that we found a ceramic tile that almost looked identical it saved us around four thousand dollars and no one had any idea that we had switched out the tile for a less expensive one the bathroom looked stunning in the past five years or so the tile industry has gone through somewhat of a revival and the fact that there are so many new and cool tiles to select from everyone's seen the tiles that look like wood but what about the tiles that look like fabric are the really beautiful concrete tiles designed by talented artisans from all over the world most of these new tiles are ceramic and can be purchased in the two to four dollar square foot range giving you plenty of options to decorate your home with affordable luxurious looking tiles countertops are all the rave right now due to their durability cost and low maintenance the price tag per square foot on this increasingly popular material mirrors that of middle level granite and there are quality brands of quartz that resemble granite and marble so accurately that most customers can't tell the difference we pretty much use courts throughout the entire house on our projects because of these reasons one saving strategy is to use more expensive courts like cambria only in the kitchen to master bath and more affordable courts in the remaining areas this is a great way to save money we call the lighting the jewelry of the home and if you're not careful you can quickly overspend in this area again we like to focus more expensive fixtures in only a few areas and use more affordable options everywhere else the dining kitchen island and master bathroom are areas where you can splurge but work to get more cost effective fixtures throughout the rest of the house like in the tile if you find a lighting fixture that you really love but the price is too high ask your lighting rep to suggest options for less expensive fixtures that give you the same [Music] look plumbing is an area where i feel i overspent in our spec homes for many years at the end of the day as long as you have mid-range fixtures in the kitchen and master bath like kohler and moen and more affordable fixtures everywhere else you'll be fine no one really pays attention to plumbing fixtures they really don't so try to save money here hardware is something that you'll be touching every day and so were your guests i would suggest spending more money on door handsets we love mtec door hardware that's e-m-t-e-k it just feels solid and expensive and it's really not that badly priced and for door and cabinet hardware just try to keep your selections in the three to five dollar range there are so many good options here no one is going to notice that you spent 12 plus dollars per each piece of hardware so don't waste money here [Music] the last item we're going to cover is flooring this area can quickly add up because there's so much of it a typical house will have between three thousand and four thousand square foot of flooring and if you spend even 50 cents more square foot on flooring it can add up to thousands of dollars so be careful here we always use high quality engineered flooring in our houses and there are tons of good companies out there that have high quality flooring in the three to five dollar square foot range there's really no need to spend any more money here so making the right selections can save you money on appliances tile countertops lighting hardware and flooring thank you all for watching if
